Most dominant 5v5 teams by xGF% according to Data Driven Hockey.

  1. Man crazy that we made 2 conference finals runs with horrible 5v5 metrics and now we are the 2nd best team and we can’t seem to buy a goal sometimes

  2. His is only because of the small sample size. They had 3-4 good games then it’s been shit since. This will fall off soon

  3. We used to be terrible with the advanced stats and win lots of games. Now we’re good with those metrics but we’re losing games? What gives?

  4. Two things I can say about this.

    1) There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.

    2) Go home, Data Driven Hockey, you’re drunk.

  5. I love how everyone’s first response is ‘stats lie.’ In reality, most of us watching the Rangers at 5v5 have seen play that should lead to more goals. They were snake bitten for a few games where they dominated 5v5 but couldn’t finish. The recent stretch has been more suspect, but even last night they limited chances against.

The takeaway isn’t that data means nothing, it’s that the sample size is still small. Give it a few more weeks and we’ll see which trends actually hold.

  6. This is why advanced analytics are bullshit. “Well you shouldn’t have won because…” arguments completely ignore the reality of teams that have good leadership and belief. Those intangibles matter, and lead to wins, more often than these metrics can understand.

  7. Now if that only translated into actual goals …

Shows they’re playing right (most games) but just aren’t reaping the rewards

  8. This is a good sign, alot of the hockey through the awful start has been less about system and more about a severe lack of finishing. Pieces will come together.

  9. The issue is now the skilled players dried up like a raisin and the team is basically being carried by the bottom 9.

I also have a hard time caring about this when we’ve been outscored 15-6 at home and just got bitch slapped by the Flames 5-1
