Jeff Skinner, William Eklund and more react to Sharks’ loss to Devils | NBCS California

the second period, but what else would the second period for you guys? Uh, yeah, obviously the penalties take a couple couple times to kill them off and um yeah, we just didn’t gain the momentum back. And on the goal that was taken, you know, taken off the board, you you were banging on the boards. Were you what was that about? Were you thinking that they had too much time to challenge? Walk us through that. I don’t I don’t know what the timing is, so I don’t know. I I Yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know what was gone. Guys got off to a good start and seems like second period things started falling apart. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I don’t know. In the second period in particular, could you guys have been more uh direct with the puck? Maybe offensively? Yeah, for sure. I I think obviously we didn’t create enough probably um offensively we didn’t get many looks. I thought ASI played really well uh throughout the game. Um kept us in it and yeah, we just weren’t able to sustain ozone time or uh create enough looks or create enough chances or shots um to kind of turn the tide and and sort of uh yeah get that momentum back on our side. And you had your legs in the back to back affected you guys the second third period? I don’t no I don’t think so. I mean, no, I mean that’s that’s the way the league works. So, uh you have to play back to back sometimes. What can you say about Ascarov’s performance? Obviously, a lot of spotlight on him and maybe not the start of the season that he wanted, but tonight, you know, kept you guys in the game for sure. Yeah, he was really solid. Um made some really, really good saves, especially on the kill. I thought he was uh um came up huge there, especially mo big moments in the game. I think that’s what you want to see is is uh is is making big saves at big times and I think he did that tonight. So, um yeah, I think uh unfortunately we couldn’t sort of um support him a little bit more, but uh yeah, I thought he played great. I want to ask you also about Colin Graph. I know you’re not on the line with him, but you were on the line with him the season. seemed like he had a really strong game. Just what have you learned about Colin as a player? Yeah, he’s a good player. Um he’s got a lot of skill. I think uh probably gets overlooked a little bit, but uh makes really good play. He’s really smart. S smart player. Uh always in the right spot and um yeah, obviously still a young guy, so he’s going to continue to improve. So that’ll be fun to watch. Uh do you feel like the second power play uh your power unit though had trouble kind of uh maybe establishing zone time, getting shots on? What could you guys have done better as a unit? Yeah, I mean I think uh we had a couple decent entries. Um maybe maybe could work to the inside and and get some more shots on net. Um I don’t know. Every every sort of kill is different obviously. So I have to look at kind of the specific times when we had chances to to to get pucks in the net, but obviously we’d like to we’d like to produce a little bit more and uh seemed like in second period you guys kind of fell apart a little bit. Yeah, that’s that’s what happened when you have PK, you know, they get more more chances than we had in their on their power play and you know, we we fell out of momentum a little bit. So yeah. How about the the disallowed goal? What do you think’s your view of that? Uh, I don’t know actually. I thought I thought it was a good goal from the beginning, but you know, the ref made a call and, you know, we got to we got to think about that they making the right call. Uh, in the second period when you guys are struggling to get shots on, is that a time that maybe you guys have to kind of read the situation and play play more basic maybe and just try to just kind of pound shots a little more in that? Yeah, I think so. Uh, you know, get him get more shots to the net. Uh, you know, obviously playing them back to back, it’s not I could have feel the best today maybe. Uh, so, you know, getting some more pucks to the net and getting guys at the net, that’s going to make, you know, great scoring chances. Have had a really strong penalty code of late. What worked for your unit on that first one on your goal? Yeah, I know. We moved the puck quickly. I think we’ve been moving the puck quickly and the last couple games. Uh, you know, we should have had more more goals there today and, uh, couldn’t couldn’t bury. After maybe a little bit of a slow start to your season, your offense seems to be starting to come in bunches. Where do you feel your game is at now? Uh, I don’t know. It’s I’ve been having chances game after game and, you know, uh, I feel better and better every game and, you know, uh, I want us to have a chance to win every night. I’m trying to do that as best I can. you know, longterm impact. Have you to kill those three penalties in the second with the long chain? Uh, you know, obviously going killing you’re, you know, the lines get a little mixed up sometimes and, you know, you got guys going out there uh doubling shits and stuff, but you know, I think our kill did a good job today, but but also we we got to try to stay out the box as much as we can and, you know, go after them sometimes. How how encouraging was it to see Ascar play like he did tonight? He was great. You know, he’s you know, our goal is always give us a chance to win and you know, we we we try to play as good as we can for them, but you know, ask he was phenomenal tonight. Kind of seems to be the issue. What do you see as kind of the repetitive issue in the period so far? Oh, we take too many penalties. That was the name of the game. How do you guys, you know, you guys get that five on three. Do you think that might have been a a chance to really kind of flip the momentum there? Yeah, for sure. Um, but we got to stay the box. Skinner’s disallowed goal. I know he was banging on the boards. You had a conversation with the referee. What was your conversation about? Did you think they had too long to challenge? Yeah, that’s what I was asking. That that was the memo from the league before the start of the season was there’s going to be quick challenge. You got only got a certain amount of time. They didn’t give us the exact time, but you know, we’re preparing for that. So, I thought that there was a lot of time for them to challenge um is what it is. In that second period where you guys struggle to kind of mount much of an attack, is that a time where you know a young team has to maybe read that be a little more basic with the attack? Don’t, you know, when you do get a chance to enter the zone just Well, you’re in the penalty box for 10 minutes. It’s hard to get in any attack. You’re you only have four guys in the ice. You feel like the the offensive zone entries were good in the first and then a little east west there. Yeah, it’s a little too cute at times and something that we have to learn is you’re not going to feel great every single night. We’re not going to have our a game. We’re not going to play like we did last night and put six on the board every night. We got to be able to win 2-1. Um grind it out, play simple, steady hockey. Um so that’s a lesson that we we’ll have to learn. What can you say about your go was great. Did you uh not like the calls in the second period or what did you think? No, they’re the calls are the calls. I mean, delay a game. We’ve done that, you know, this three in the last, you know, two games. That can happen. The stick penalties, the hooks and grabbing guys around the waist, those are penalties. Do you stress back to back? Try to keep it basic and just try to grind the game out. Yeah, that was key number one. Talk about the speed. What What do they the Devils do well? What’s their fast? Yeah, fast team. They go north quickly. Um, obviously they had their skill guys get going. Um, so we were pretty well aware uh how they were going to play. They’ve done a really good job. They’re probably the best team in the league right now. Uh, you know, I know it’s early, but they got skill and they make you pay. And then, you know, below the top of the circles, they can hold on to pucks. Uh, they’re defending defending really hard, blocking shots. Um, but yeah, they’re they go quick uh north quickly. Do you try to tell your guys to get in the way? You try to slow them down. Is that a way to to Yeah, I think you got to be physical. Really, it starts in their own in their end and our forch check. Uh getting physical uh slowing down their defenseman to get up in the rush. Um something we all talked about this morning. Uh the penalties in a second. You think that was maybe a little fatigue or what could you guys have done better? Yeah, I think we were obviously we played last night, but it’s no excuse. Um you know, we got to keep our six down. We got to keep our our legs moving. We have to understand when we are in shifts and and manage those situations. Was it encouraging to see the consistent good starts now when the details are there? You just got to stretch it out now. Yeah, I think so. Again, five on five, I didn’t really mind our game. You know, scoring chances were uh pretty pretty close to even. Um but again, just it’s in this league with that firepower over there, if you’re on the penalty box for 10 minutes, you’re not going to win many games. PK, it looked like they were really driving you guys deep into the zone. Is that something you guys kind of had in mind? Just weren’t able to execute? Yeah, we got to we got to clean up our our pound to kill. It’s costing us some games. Um, you know, I think our power play can be a little bit more of a threat at times as well. So, our special teams, we got to get them improving. What has to be better about the TK? Not let goals go in. You know, forced on the score she looks like 26 saves, but so many of them were great a chance. Yeah, he was good. Made some unbelievable saves. I think that’s a confidence booster for him.
