  1. Just watch them, it’s clear they’re not good. I hate Berube hockey and I hate whatever the fuck happened to Matthews. It’s brutal this year without Stolie standing on his head.

  3. What happens with the doomers when we start winning? Like, where do they go? Just wait until we get eliminated in the playoffs or whatever and come back? Do you constantly just post doom and gloom in order to cope with any failure that the Leafs eventually have so you can say “I have been saying it forever”?

  5. Maybe it’s not the coaches, it’s the soft fkn culture this team has played for 10 years ,unless u have a Reaves or simmonds to fight for u ? They didn’t even stick up for each other ,plain and simple ,some of the base ,dont think our lack of physicality or standing up for each other is not te reason y we lose . I just look at WiFi or other teams ,that have players that make sure our goalies dont get run over or rookies getting crosschecked to the face ,it’s fkkkn embarrassing after we lost Stolartz last year ,and they still allow shit like that to go on ..
    . Im fkkkkn sick of these fairies 🧚‍♂️, I’d rather watch Clarke Gilmore Tie, and not nake tge playoffs.

    We should be closer to Carolina in terms of roster building, but we’re trying to emulate sunbelt teams being Grindy gritty and cut throat

  13. There is a huge group of teams that you might consider to be not that great and not that bad. The league is full of them. And I think the Leafs are in that pack. There might be a few elite teams and a few at the very bottom that everybody knew would suck from day one. And then there’s 18 or 20 teams that will duke it out for the bottom playoff spots. Welcome to Toronto Maple Leafs hockey.

  15. I mentioned this early last season. Mentioned it again after the playoffs and mentioned it around the first 4 games of this season. I said, the Leafs get out-shot too often and it is not sustainable.

    Even the Ottawa series, we got out-shot. You can’t keep relying on your goalie to have a league best SV%. Means you need to be very clinical with your shots and hope your goalie stays hot or healthy which is just not realistic.

  16. Berube has never been a good coach by the numbers. He’s had a few food runs and so I guess the reputation is he can squeeze blood from a stone. I also have very little confidence in Tre.

    People are going to make this about Marner or maybe about Matthews but when Shanny was able to hire a new GM who hired a coach we were cooked. Should have blown it up after the Montreal series.

  17. Toronto didn’t do a great job during the rebuild of fixing the development and drafting system. As a result our depth has slowly been dropping over the years (especially in areas like defense) and the team plays a run and gun type of game which makes it extremely vulnerable to counter attacks and the team doesn’t prioritize smart defensive hockey in such a system. Look at how many high quality scoring chances happened in large part because Toronto got caught lacking urgency and making bad puck decisions combined with panicking after the fact.

    Toronto’s got a long season ahead … and unless they finish in the bottom of the league they don’t even have a first round pick to work with this year.

  18. Hmmm by the word of the management the squad building is getting worse and worse. We have to live with what we have and can’t retool because we gave our picks away in terrible deals. We got “good” players but did we get great ones for our most prized assets? We have to live by it now.

    Now this chart doesn’t actually spell the worst for the leafs, as the system last year worked, and th numbers make it look worse without context. But OP is right, the goaltending was a huge difference.

    The team is clunky and slow and most guys don’t have a “thing”. The sum of those parts (especially the group of guys coming in to replace that marner cap hit) don’t bring much to the table. We got “piss and vinegar” and “North south” team, neither of which are visible (one because we simply are not physical enough, and the other because we are too slow to chase pucks, both offense and defense).

  19. They’re not playing well this season.

    But xg is not a perfect metric. Last season the types of chances the Leafs were giving up were not bad and the play was fairly predictable for our goalies. So I absolutely don’t believe the Leafs were a negative team overall and relies purely on goaltending. The actual danger of chances isn’t always measure well with publically available data.

    Now this season that isn’t true. They’re giving up real high quality chances more often, while stolarz isn’t quite as sharp. Also our offensive game looks much worse, obviously.

    So yea, we’ve been bad, but I’d defend last season a little bit.

  24. Treliving and Berube are Shanny’s last fingerprints on this franchise by association, and they’re both not good. I hate Berube hockey, and I hate what they’ve done to this team. Our window is closing at warp speed.

  27. Tried telling you guys years ago – when you hire a GM who prioritizes heavy, aging, slow grinders, you’re going to get a team that looks slow and old.

    Now add in a coach who isn’t that good?

    This is what you get.

    The Toronto Maple Leafs are not cup contenders, and whatever window of contention this team actually had, is now over.

    Just enjoy the final few years of the Matthews era, and then start over.
