THE HERD | Colin Cowherd IMPRESSED, Denver Broncos Are Being HELD ACCOUNTABLE To Be GREAT | NFL

All right. Of all the things Shawn Payeyton has done, I mean, they gave he inherited a team that had Russell Wilson, gave up draft capital, they are really good. What’s the one thing because you cover him weekly, you see them, you talk about him. What is the one secret sauce to what he’s done? Well, he holds guys accountable. First and foremost, Colin, the salary cap in the NFL is fungeible. It is the biggest joke to me when we say, “Oh, we can’t let go of this guy.” Or, “Oh, we’re gonna be in sal salary cap purgatory. What are we gonna do? Russell Wilson, we’re never going to be able to rebuild.” You can manipulate that money any way you want to manipulate that money. If you want to get rid of a guy, you can get rid of him. If you want to pay a guy, you can pay a guy. So, that whole salary cap thing is garbage. Then, I think from Shawn’s standpoint, man, he’s a great coach. He motivates his players and he’s one of those guys that has the two types of fear that I always talk about. Biblically, fear refers to kind of awesome reverence and respect. He’s got the respect and the reverence of his players, but also fear like I’ll cut your ass in a heartbeat if you don’t do what I ask you to do. And over the last couple of weeks, they were abysmal. On the edge, bubble screens, wide receivers not blocking. And I guarantee you, they had a little come to Jesus meeting inside the walls of the Denver Broncos said, “If you’re not going to do this, if you’re not going to execute, if you receivers aren’t going to block, then you’re not going to get to play.” And last week was evidence of that because last week they started Pat Bryant, a rookie wide receiver, and said, “You’re going to be the point of attack on our pitch and pull game. We’re going to be the point of attack out there blocking people on bubble screens.” and he absolutely dispensed justice out there as a receiver blocking. You know what they did later? Rewarded him with a touchdown over the top. Deep ball over the top. So that’s exactly the kind of coach that he is. I’m going to hold you accountable. And if you don’t want to do it, be my guest. Don’t do it. But you’re not going to play for me. And I love that aspect of Shawn Peyton. Wow. Great observation by Mark. uh it wasn’t really something that I was looking at it through that lens. Um and it it makes a lot of sense. So I I I I I love that. Um really really awesome points. Um and you know that’s that’s what matters so much. It’s not always just about the players, not always about the quarterback play. You have a great I have a top 10 defense. I have a top five offense. This that and the third. Like it’s are the c are the players held accountable? Right. And when you and when you look at teams that win consistently, obviously the Kansas City Chiefs, the Eagles, we can use the Chiefs as as the reference point because I know the Broncos love the Kansas City Chiefs, but you you can tell that no matter who they bring into that building, those players are held accountable. They when they are asked to do something, they go out and do it and they execute at the highest level. It’s why you can win with a whole mix of of faces and and new personalities. And that is what great coaches do consistently. Whether you’re Andy, whether you’re Shawn McVey, whether you’re Shawn Payne, you know, like it it it it it happens. So, um, you know, in a lot of ways, that’s what we talk about a lot, you know, that that’s a that’s a aspect of culture, you know, um, and so, but the way how Mark really kind of put that all together, I’m just like, oh, that that actually all makes a lot of sense. Um, and listen, it’s great that someone like that you can insert Bo Nicks in that situation and have Bo Nicks be like, “I want you to hit this receiver right now.” And Bo Nick is like, “All right.” And he does it and succeeds and makes a a beautiful throw and a beautiful catch. Like that kind of also shows you a lot about Bo. Um, that he’s not some, you know, one-trick pony. It’s pretty cool because going into the Dallas Cowboys game, um, listen, it’s always hard since I’m watching all the games and talking about all these teams, it’s not always easy for me to remember who everyone is playing, everyone’s exact schedule. I I need to be reminded, you know, I’m like, “Oh, this team has a buy right now.” Like, “Oh, this is who they play.” And so, going into the Cowboys game, I was like, “Okay, this game is going to tell this game is so important right now. This is going to tell us, you know, for the most part, like everything we need to know about this Broncos team cuz this this this Cowboys defense is so bad. And this Broncos offense has been struggling. Uh, hasn’t been as good as you as you would anticipate, as you would need it to be. Um, and this defense has been elite. uh and and the Cowboys offense has been great. Your defense is either going to show that it can slow down a great offense and a quarterback that’s been playing great with great receivers, CD, uh pickins, etc. And you or and or your offense is going to show when you give us a bad defense, we’re going to be able to get to work. And both things came true. Both things panned out exactly how you’d want it to unfold. And now you’re going up against a Texans team and now it’s like reverse. This offense has been a complete mess. Complete mess. Complete mess. Complete mess. It’s it’s tough watches. Honestly, if you watch this game, if you watch a lot of Texans games, like the only when you’re watching offensively, really your only feeling should feel should be like you feel bad for for CJ Strad. Honestly. Um and but defensively they’ve been awesome. Defensively they’ve been awesome. And this is now such a crucial and important game now for the Broncos to continue to show who are you? Who are you? Because this defense now should continue to give CJ Strad and that offense fits. They should continue to just disrupt them and be like, “Hey CJ, you’re not having a big game against us. Like that’s cool. You get to have a big game against some bad teams or you have an outlier.” Not against us, man. Not against us. Your O line’s a mess. You don’t know how to protect your quarterback. won’t know how to, you know, do certain things to get the run game going. Blah, blah, blah. You’re not going to figure it out against us. No, you’re not. Um, and then it’s going to show what can this offense do? I’m not expecting the Broncos offense to be able to light up the Texans, but like can you play really smart highlevel situational football? Now, unless you’re getting a million turnovers, which is definitely possible from the from a Texans perspective, or you’re getting like a ton of three and outs and you’re getting the ball on great field position, but even even if all that happens, it’s like, are you just being smart? Are you just being smart? Cuz this could absolutely be one of those really bizarre, ugly, lowscoring games, but where the Broncos are clearly in charge of the game. Like I could see this game being like a again I always make up numbers completely like you know uh 18-3 or something 18-6 right like and so it’s like and that’s okay and so it’s just like you don’t turn the ball over you don’t make mistakes you understand that you know again since this Texans defense is great you’re going to have a three and out you’re you’re going to you’re going to get backed up there’s going to be like a third and three situation where you think like okay we’re going to convert here and then like it’s just Bo Nicks is immediately running for his like you’re going to have some of those moments you’re going going to have it. You might even have a bad interception, which I would prefer not to see that. Uh, obviously, but even so, just still understanding, hey, it’s okay. We’re this this this this offense can’t do anything on our defense. We just got to be smart. We got to move the chains. I want to see what Shawn Payeyton calls. If it’s fourth and two, is he going to kick a field goal or is he going to go for it? He’s been going for it. And I’m And there was one moment before I’m just like, kick the field goal, be smart, you know, whatever it is. So, like I this is where you now start to see some of the high quality situational play offensively that this team does need to show that this team does need to establish because that is what you’re going to continue to need against the Chargers, against the Chiefs, against the Colts, against a lot of these other top teams in the AFC and NFC, right? Like like that’s that’s how you start to separate yourselves. You know, in a lot of ways, it’s easy, and I say that very loosely, to roll a team like the Cowboys when your offense is just rolling, rolling, rolling, and your defense is stepping up. Not every game is going to be like that. Not not every game is going to be like that, obviously. Uh, and pretty much every single important game you you’re going to play is most most definitely not going to be that way. And if it is, it’s it’s an outlier, right? It’s it’s not the norm. Um, we don’t we don’t see big playoff games like that necessarily get blown out. I mean, it’s it’s only more of like a recent thing that happened with the Eagles even. Um, but it’s just it’s obviously not not not the norm. So, this will we’ll learn a lot about this team offensively because again, I was wildly impressed and praised the the Broncos for for doing what they were able to do against the Cowboys. And yeah, the Cowboys defense is is not good, but I loved what the what the offense still did and how they executed and and the throws and the plays that were made. It wasn’t just like, hey, you’re throwing a to wide open guys all day and that’s why you were able to have the success. I think it was deeper than that. And now you’re going up against the the literal exact opposite now. The exact opposite. And you are now going to need to play incredibly highlevel offensive football. And that’s that’s what I want to see more than anything out of this team. I expect the defense to rise to the occasion. It would be more shocking to see the the the Texans offense get going up against this Denver D. I know again they’re banged up now and dealing with some issues too, but still I I I still believe in this Broncos defense. And so to me it’s all hands on deck on what does this offense look like right now? Can they start to, you know, again, it’s not that they have to hang 28 points here, but can they still just feel in control even when they’re having again like a three and out or, you know, whatever it is where one quarter they score no points or just a field goal where they’re still like we’re in control. We understand that we’re going up against a great deal. Like we’re we’re just going to be smart, move the chains like, you know, situationally that’s that’s what I’m looking for. And so, uh, I’m excited that they’re playing a team like the Texans right now because to me it just, um, it’s more work for them to be able to learn, grow, and evolve. You know, iron sharpens iron. Um, and so I I think that offense, um, it’ll be great to go up against team like Texans. I think they’re going to put some great stuff on film. I think Shawn Payeyton’s going to learn. Uh, Bo Nicks is going to learn, you know, like and and everyone else involved. Uh, and so, um, I think a game like this, again, specifically offense to defense, uh, is is really, really beneficial for this team, and I’m just excited to see what lessons, uh, we learn and what knowledge we learn about this team as the season continues to unfold. But those are just my thoughts. I’d absolutely love to hear yours. What do you guys all think about uh, Bon Knicks and the Denver Broncos and what you’ve been seeing out of them and and what Mark Slair said? I mean, he asked, “Can Denver win a Super Bowl with Bot Knicks?” But they didn’t answer that question. So, I don’t know why that question is there. Um, cuz as soon as I was queuing up this clip, I didn’t watch it yet. I mean, I saw the bottom thing, can Denver win a Super Bowl with Bowden Knicks, and I was like, “What?” Like, what? That’s the That’s the question that he’s asking right now. And then, of course, they didn’t even remotely address that. Um, but still all in all, um, a lot to learn. But those are just my thoughts. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. I read every single comment. It’s whether you agree with me or disagree with me. Either way, let’s get in some discussions. Let’s get in some fights. 1. Justice for Jan 6th put trump in a cell or a grave, never forget that rapists treason. If the Broncos offense can play 4 full quarters, they can take the cheifs down.

  2. Just take care of the football and establish the run game and the defense should be able to win this for us. Low scoring game for sure fought in the trenches.

  3. With an Elite Defense (so far) with the Texans and a Good to Great QB like Stroud, a win is always on the table.
He can break out any time.
Houston is going to be Winning more games the second half of the Season. Denver, KC…they have the ability to beat them

  4. Pat Bryant after he was drafted "No block no rock" I fell in love with him immediately. Bo always talks about the team not having any "primadonas" so it's definitely something they are aware of in that building and something Sean Payton has emphasized in the type of players they've brought in. People doubting the Broncos are in for a long season trying to discount them.

  5. I want 20+ runs in this game and bo picking up 1st downs within legs I think thats key this game win the time of possession and let our defense go after cj and that bad o line of the texans
