Ejiro Evero on facing Packers offense | Carolina Panthers
Uh so we uh as a organization, as a team have a great opportunity this week, the the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau Field and uh very very excited about uh playing a very good football team, well coached uh by coach Lafleur and Coach Stanovich and their entire staff and uh have a lot of respect for this organization. Uh I was there in 2016 for one year and just had a fantastic experience and just from top down it’s a really really good place to work and fun place to live and so uh we’re excited about it. Uh we know they’re a good team. It’s going to be a great challenge. Uh but uh excited for uh our team and what we can potentially do this week. Thanks, coach. Uh let’s start with Mike K followed by Cass. Hey, good morning, EJ. Good morning. You brought you brought up um the experience in Green Bay. Was that the first time you worked with Dom and is that how you guys developed your relationship? And if so, how impactful do you think that stop in your career was on your your path to where you are now? Yeah. No, it it was very impactful for certain. And yes, to answer the first part of your question, that was the first time I met Dom and uh I was fortunate enough and uh I had was at the Niners 49ers for the five years previous and uh just like what happens at times in this profession, I was out of work uh after a coaching change and uh I was fortunate enough uh just through some connections uh mostly coach Fangio and his connection with uh Vic Fangio and his connection with uh Dom and then uh a couple of connections we had with Mike McCarthy, I was able to get a job there and uh I was Dom’s QC and uh talk about uh uh uh PhD in football right there just uh um from all levels uh organizational schematics uh how you deal with the players, how you motivate and uh it was such a great experience for me and so um I it was definitely a big big part of my journey and uh what’s made me the coach I am today and not just Don but also coach Mike as well. He was just a great leader of men and really ran a great uh uh operation there. And uh so yeah, I’ve been so blessed with all these co coaches that I’ve come across in my career. Um and uh you know, for me, I I look at it as like, hey, if I could take a little bit out of all these great coaches I’ve been around, you know, I I got a chance to be a good one myself. And so that was definitely a big part of it. I know Charlotte’s not really good at at kind of mimicking the weather of Green Bay and, you know, this is probably not going to be that normal cold weather Green Bay game, but having the benefit of maybe some rain or unal practice in, does that help at all from a like a psyche standpoint or from a fundamental standpoint heading into a game like this? Yeah, I definitely think it does from a psyche standpoint and it’s really more of the mindset of like it doesn’t matter. you know, you got to go out there, you got to play, and you once you’re out there a little bit longer, you realize that uh it’s not a big deal that you’ll survive and you can actually do everything you do when it’s uh 25 degrees warmer. And so, uh I I certainly enjoy that the change of weather here uh leading into this game. Oh, yeah. Y’all y’all dialed that up pretty good this week. Um, this is actually not this is not what I wanted to ask, but you said something that made me think of this. Like, was there a a meeting or a practice or a game or with Dom early on where you first kind of realized like, oh, I’m dealing with a different level of coaching here? Well, uh, you know, at that point, I’d been around some really good ones already. Uh I had been with coach Fangi already had Eric Manini as coordinators Monty Keiffin and uh they all have different styles and different um you know things that they really excel at and uh Dom was kind of just another one of those examples and but uh the one thing about Dom is he’s just meticulously organized and uh maybe it’s partly his his experience level but it’s also I just think just who the human is. he is there’s like nothing that will ever catch him off guard. And so like anything you could possibly think of from an organizational standpoint, from a detail, from a schematic, he’s like on top of it. And so um it really like being around him really raises your level of uh how intentional and how detailed you need to be. And uh so from that standpoint, great great experience. Um and you know, Dom has got a such a great way about him. He will never he doesn’t raise his voice really. he’s just he’s not going to, you know, get yell and scream and do all that stuff, but you’re certainly going to know when you don’t do a good enough job. And so there was a couple of examples like I remember one example where um we have this uh uh what’s it called? Um, it’s a it’s really a virtual simulator at at Green Bay where you know I I create a PowerPoint presentation as a QC and then they present it up on this big video board and the video board is the size of the screen and so you’re doing walkthroughs on a full full width football field with a video screen there playing the offense for you. And so I was responsible for creating those every week. And so uh one week I um somehow screwed up a couple of things and uh afterwards she pulled me aside. is like, “Hey, uh, you know, that’s not acceptable. We’re going to have to do a little bit better than that.” And I’m like, “Yes, sir. Will not happen again.” And so, uh, it did not. So, uh, to your point is just like just the level of detail that he he commands is, uh, pretty impressive. That’s awesome. Um, actual question now, kind of using Tucker Craft as an example, maybe. How have you seen the the tight end position evolve and how have defenses had to evolve with it? Yeah, you know, I don’t view it that way so much. Uh, it certainly has evolved from the standpoint of like uh, you know, they’re in unusual positions that pass catchers, like the primary pass catchers normally aren’t in. But like when you kind of just look at modern football, you know, all of these teams have these weapons. It might be a receiver, it might be a running back, it might be a tight end. And like the teams, you can always tell like how teams utilize their best players, like who they really value. And I I feel that way about Tucker Craft. Like when you look at on third down, they’re he’s the one they’re trying to get the ball to in the red zone, he’s the one they’re trying to get the ball to. You know, all of these catch and runs, these screens, and so it’s just it’s very very evident. Like, yeah, they have all of these excellent skilled players on their offense, but when you see how they’re utilizing that tight end, it just shows you how much they value him. Uh Joe Pson followed by Jeff Hawkins. Hey, how you doing? Good Joe. How you doing? Awesome, man. Thank you. Um, James Cook had 141, I think, of his yards the other day, uh, before initial contact. What was the the issue there scheme-wise or their scheme? And how did that how did that happen? Yeah. No, we, you know, we certainly didn’t do a good enough job of coaching, of playing, and uh, you know, don’t want to get too much into schematics for, uh, competitive reasons, but, uh, I will say that they, you know, they certainly got the ball on the edge a good amount of times. And so, um, and we just didn’t do a good enough job of adjusting or playing against it. And so, um, I’ve got to be better, our staff’s got to be better, our players have got to be better. Um, because, um, you know, that just wasn’t good enough. Thank you. also um need to hear your best Green Bay weather story both in football and just like normal life up there that year you were there. Uh weather story was um you know there weren’t any a lot of great weather stories from a football standpoint just because I was very fortunate like I love being on the field but uh that year I was in a press box for the game so I was very very fortunate and blessed for that experience. No complaints here. Um, but uh, from a uh, uh, life standpoint, I remember one day I was driving into work and, uh, it was actually I got two stories from that standpoint, but um, one day I was driving into work and uh, I’m going down the highway. I lived about 15 minutes away from the stadium and it is just a blizzard and I I’ve never, you know, I grew up in Southern California so I’ve never been in wizard of weather like that and I couldn’t see more than like 15 20 feet in front of me. So, I’m on a highway. I’m going 10 miles an hour. I can’t see the uh lines or anything. And I was like, “Yep, this is a little different for me.” Um, and the other one was uh where I lived at was uh there was a um it was kind of like there’s a little uh urban area, but then it was pretty much surrounded by woods. And uh I would randomly just hear like gunshots all the time. And I was like, “What what is going on around here?” here. And so one day I’m driving to work and uh I see a guy come out of the woods on his truck and he had a big old uh deer on top of his on on top of his truck. And so I’m like, “Okay, that’s what’s happening here. Make sure don’t I don’t take any walks in the woods.” So yeah, the hunting, the the lifestyle there, all of that stuff. But the people are fantast fantastic. And me and Natalie had a great time living there. Awesome. Thank you. Hey, good morning, coach. Hey, good morning. Yeah, versus the Bills. Uh Boogie and Churless both out snapped Princeley who looked visually upset at the end of the game. Was that injury related or was that a coach’s decision? No, injury related. Okay. Is Boogie making a play for the 53? Uh you know, I’ll let coach uh coach Canales and uh coach uh Mr. Dan Morgan answer those questions. Okay. Thank you, Sheena. Good morning, coach. Good morning. Um, you briefly mentioned or just talked about the tight ends. Um, you guys have not necessarily had a ton of success in covering tight ends. Um, do you could you kind of give us some insight into, you know, how you guys are better able to defend that, especially this coming Sunday? Well, I you know, I think uh execution uh mindfulness of how we uh plan against the other team’s main weapons. Um, but uh I would say those are the biggest things. Um, I don’t think it’s necessarily a position thing. I just think it’s uh, you know, on that day we weren’t good enough in those spots. Thanks, Coach. Darren Brad was talking earlier about the process of getting new people kind of caught up to what you’ve been doing like with Mike White. Uh, when you get a Gibson in here this week, how how much do you throw at him all at once to try to get a guy ready in a hurry? Well, uh we uh give them as much information as we possibly can just with the standpoint of like he might be playing this week and uh so uh we’ll see about the inactives and all that as we move through the week. But uh yeah, there’s a possibility to have a chance to play. Then we got to get him ready. We got to get him up to speed and uh there’s a lot of information that’s been covered really since May till this point that he’s got to get caught up on. Um, but also part of being a pro is uh the learning of it. And then when you have uh that veteran experience where you can relate things and concepts to things that you’ve done in the past, it certainly makes the uh the uh um learning the new stuff a lot easier. And uh you know, and our QC’s and our assistant coaches do such a great job and play such an important role in that. And so um you know guys like Ayram Meini and uh Kevin Peterson and Mary Chad Huri those guys spending the extra meeting time with those uh new players while the other coaches are game planning is so vital. What what percentage of the book do you give a guy in his first week? Uh we typically just give him the game plan. So whatever is going to be in that week we’ll give it to him. [Music] Heat. Heat. N.
