Go to any team sub, especially of a bottom 16 team, and you’ll see fans post the same old “coach X should bench the vets to send a message but he just keeps benching rookies!!!!” comment. Can’t complain about accountability for vets (assuming you he story were getting really is the story)
I used to love Staple but since he moved to the Athletic he’s been kind of ass on the Islanders front.
That said….Darche is a new GM, why it would it suddenly be hard to rein in player bullshit? Shows them he’s not fucking around and everyone’s accountable.
“Fairly big game” dude we are 10 games into the season, if we were fighting for a playoff spot in March I’d say this. Not October.
All this said, this sounds like some shit he’s throwing on X to boost interaction.
There’s a new franchise player in town, Isles don’t have to pussyfoot around anymore if Barzal isn’t doing the proper thing
Accountability is….bad?
the alternative is letting it slide and showing a bad precedent. Didnt we WANT the culture of this team to improve?
He’s right. He’s not 18, he’s 28. Show up to practice on time. It’s not hard and he’s not a child.
Points 2 and 3 are BS to me. This is Darche’s first year as GM. Is he not supposed to deal with misbehavior from his players in the way he sees fit because the previous administration handled things differently? Secondly, it is October. The team is not all in on making the playoffs. Framing this as a big game is incredibly disingenuous.
Edit: Saw something pointed out that is relevant- last year, the Lightning benched Brayden Point for the same reason. A relevant quote from the article:
> It’s not the first time Point has been held out of a game for missing a meeting. Back in February of 2019, he missed a game against the Philadelphia Flyers. **As has long been the case for the Lightning, they hold their players accountable, no matter their importance to the line-up.**
So this is absolutely Darche instilling the culture he was a part of in Tampa.
Is it bad that I’m ambivalent to the whole situation because neither guy will be here when we contend again or am I just too cynical?
I doubt team leadership sees this team making or going deep into the playoffs so if benching Barzal leads to a loss it’s not a big deal. Although, I don’t how one can determine if his absence would be the cause.
“Fairly big game” that’s pretty funny.
This is Staple being a fucking idiot, for lack of less crass words.
New GM, new rules. They can have hair, they can’t be fucking late (or hungover or whatever actually happened). Be fair to vets and rookies alike.
Honestly, this is probably a message Barzal has needed for a while. He is a good player who could be great but just sort of…isn’t. He does too much skating and too much fancy shit that turns into nothing. Meanwhile you have Lee who shoots it off a pad instead of trying to slot a 10% pass across the ice.
In Darche we trust. Also big game? lol we have no expectations this season
This is the right move to send a message. People can’t say “leeway in the past” since this is a new team with new leadership.
The way I look at it, if Potvin could be left behind at the coliseum and a heathly scratch for being late for the team bus then anyone could be.
Honestly, this might be the first time. I can’t imagine this shit flying with Lou Lamoriello at the helm. Still the right decision, but I’d honestly be surprised if there was a pattern.
Cmon man how can you accept this as anything besides BS speculation. Rules are rules. It doesn’t matter who you are. There is no evidence of him acting out previously. I support the decision, it’s a culture of holding people accountable regardless of stature. This is just a clickbait tweet.
Either way it’s not a good look for the coach and it’s definitely not a good look for Barzal. And I hate to bring up Tavares to say it but as he said many years ago, don’t set one alarm clock set five.
He’s 28, not 18. Treat him like an asshole and he’ll walk in free agency and become an Islanders killer anytime he plays against them.
Absolutely bench his boney ass to send a message… like Arbour did to Trottier.
It was early in the 1979-80 season, just before the dynasty began, when the team was playing a mediocre game. Arbour briefly benched Trottier to send a clear message.
Let history repeat itself.
I had to stop following Staple, his takes are so off
I’m in the camp of “there should be a better way to deal with this without affecting the quality of the lineup”.
I guess Art still gets invited to the country club and is sad to see it shutting down.
He is getting traded so start mentally preparing yourself now if you are a huge fan of his game.
Honestly, I agree with Barzal being scratched to keep a good accountable culture. We’re not making the playoffs either, so it’s best to set the record straight while our younger guys start coming up and playing in the NHL one by one.
