Where did this Auston go?

  1. That Hyman-Matthews-Nylander line was filthy.

I think 34 and 88 are gonna pop off. Hopefully with a LWer who isn’t 50% ECHLer and 50% Clarke MacArthur like they’ve had the last couple games.

  2. Some of those goals are insane. Can’t even see it went in. That explosive release is so fast I’m sure at some point you lose that speed in your forearm and wrist. But it looks like the kinetic chain starts in the core like in most sports.

  3. Look how late all these goalies react to his snap shot. They’re all waiting for the same tell-tale shooting posture most other players get into before a shot, but Matthews used to be able to pull off a shot super quickly without looking like he’s even in position to take the shot yet. The speed at which he used to get the puck off his stick was absurd.

But that’s seemingly gone now. Probably right around the time he started working on his slap shot to replace this since he knew that he wouldn’t be able to shoot like this forever with whatever is ailing him. Bad back? Wrist? Who knows, but this shot of his is at the very minimum missing.

  4. God he was so electric

Man this team was so much fun to watch, i don’t even know what im watching anymore

  5. Let me know when he starts doing this again and I’ll watch again. He has not been anywhere near this in a while now

  6. His first 3 seasons in the league he was able to score from many different angles and places. But now it seems like he cannot, these days either goalies have gotten better at predicting shots by players now or Matthews just can’t shoot like he used to since he’s gotten injured. But even goalies today are able to stop Bedard shots I think goalies have just gotten better over time.

  7. Makes me wonder if the reason hes so quiet about his injury is that its something ppl can really easily exploit and thats why he doesn’t say anything. Mans a sniping legend. I hope he comes back.

  8. He was such a lethal weapon, it saddens me to think that he may have lost the ability to shoot like this.

  9. We just have to accept that from 2019-2024 we witnessed an all time generational run of goal scoring in a leafs uniform and it’s never coming back. Declining at 28 is crazy though.

  10. We will always have the 23-24 season. Looks like a shell now of what he once was.

  11. Ugh. These are so filthy. Can’t even track them while watching until you hear the ping. It also the patience and poise he had before shooting. Close to the defender and still doing at least one stick handle. This is rough to watch. His velocity now might be 80% of what this was.

  12. What I think is happening is he’s wearing extra gear to avoid the cross checks to the back and kidneys. Lacrosse players wear them all the time, kidney protectors they’re called. He’s having to adjust but it’ll be better in the long run or he might not wear them come playoff time

  13. What kind of ceremonial sacrifice do I need to make to bring this version back. It hurts to watch this.

  14. I want him back. SDPN had the take that he’s devolved into a defensive 2C which is a fine thing to beI just really hope he can get back to what he was.

  15. I had to turn it off after a few minutes – his release and drag were insane. Looks like a completely different player now, just sad to witness the decline of this elite skill.

  16. Something I don’t see people mentioning is that I haven’t seen one of his patented catch and release shots. It was like lightning quick and nothing I had seen from any other player. Now, it feels like he holds the puck a bit more when he receives a pass, a bit stiffly and not as smooth as it once was.

  17. Part of what made him so lethal in his prime is that he could score from anywhere. He didn’t even have to be open. In a lot of these clips he’s got guys all around him, right in front of him. And she just shoots through or around them.

Compared to now and it feels like he needs so much space to get anything done. We never really had to worry about setting him up because he was his own set up.
