I should note that Noah LaRoche is a former Grizzlies assistant coach who was fired last year. Spo took notice of the Grizzlies’ offense under Taylor Jenkins (also fired) — a free-flowing system that didn’t rely heavily on screens.
As a result, the Heat have shifted their style significantly, going from 69 ball screens to just 20 per 100 possessions. This is the fewest in the NBA.
Look what happens when the Heat go outside the same ol stale coaching staff of like minded people
This could be a product of the small sample size of games but damn 20 ball screens is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than the 2nd lowest team (Utah at 40).
Even in the loss last night, the team competed hard. I think it was more a product of the Spurs being elite defensively with Wemby anchoring them and us being down our two primary scoring threats.
I’m not well versed into strats, but it seems PNR is largely a control, set play focus into paint points which has largely been optimized against with every team just switching and pre switching to hide weaker defenders or just shading.
With free flowing offense via drives or off ball movement, we are getting more shots of all kinds (contested, open “bad”, good) and it seems Spolestra is encouraging them to find each other, drive to set up the best shot regardless of its level, and shoot with confidence.
This greatly raises our floor and ceiling as we can score in more ways instead of in the mud, slow tempo. The next step is to combine that with a few set plays in the half court setting to make us more versatile and switch between the two styles. Hopefully Herro comes back soon so his combo guard play can elevate us further and give us more scoring to lessen the minutes load on everyone.
Guess I was somewhat right about heat needing change in coaching staff

Noah LaRoche is a consultant for the Heat, not on the coaching staff in a full-time position, I can confirm.
As Anthony points out, LaRoche brought a similar offensive system to the Grizzlies last season before that team made a late-season coaching change.
