This the the Knicks made it difficult. The Bulls let this one get interesting after having a 21-point lead. Uh but the Bulls never gave up the lead. They just it got down to I think as low as three at one point in time. They never let the lead go, but you know, it got interesting down the stretch of this game, but that gave us an opportunity to see this team play connected like they’ve been doing all season long. Everybody had a play contributing as as this game went went on. They did get it outscored by 10 points in the third quarter which really put that pressure on the Chicago Bulls. But Pat, for what it’s worth, they dealt with the pressure correctly and they got it done tonight. Yeah. And you won this game by 10 points. Listen, this is this is a game that Bulls fans should be excited about. This was a game that had a ton of pressure on it. It was the game that most people probably you know how the how the uh um the the big game changes, right? When you see the Bulls come out verse the Pistons, you go, “Ah, maybe you just caught the Pistons early.” You see the Bulls go do what they did to versus Orlando, you’re like, “Well, you know, Orlando really hasn’t panned out, you know, the way that we thought that they would pan out.” You see him ball out versus Atlanta, somebody who a lot of people think uh will be a playoff team. I I don’t I don’t know what y’all looking at. Uh but, uh going up against this Knicks team, this Knicks team has not been talked about as one of the playoff teams in the Eastern Conference. They’ve been talked about as the contending team for possibly an NBA championship this year outside of the Cleveland Cavaliers. And I know it’s very early on in the season, but I think this is a very stamp your uh uh uh seal of approval type of win here when you see a Bulls team come out and they’re connected defensively so incredibly well when they’re moving their feet as well as they did. Again, that third quarter was a little bit rough, but it wasn’t just wide openen shots of, hey, we’re killing you all day. Th this was a game where both teams really made shots tough and you had to find a way to come out on top of that. To me, I love what we’re seeing from this Bulls team and Haze. The biggest difference in this team then cuz a lot of people are starting to make the comparison. Remember when we were 35 and and uh with the first 35 games, we were what were we 20 25 and 10 or something like that? You remember through the first 35 games? It’s very different. That whole first 25 games I remember just being like we ain’t played a lick of defense yet. Mhm. This is a team that’s outscoring, able to come out and put up 135 points in a game where I Dumaoa wasn’t able to finish the game. We we probably need to keep an eye on that. See if that thigh bruise is going to be something that bothers him. But a team that was able to score, put some really good defense on display, dominate situationally. That’s a very different basketball team than what we’re talking about with that Zack Lavine, Lonzo, Demar group right now and how this Bulls team is playing. If you can manage this throughout the the rest of this season, like you will be one of those top playoff teams. Yeah. I mean, this is the the a Bulls team that is definitely putting themselves and looking like a playoff team. One of the things too, Pat, that that it it it not bothers me, but it’s just interesting to watch. Everybody, if you look at every major outlet, they had the Pistons, the Magic, the Knicks, and the Atlanta Hawks. the four teams in the Eastern Conference that we beat so far, they were all between all basically in the top six. We were all through being a top six uh seed. Now that the Bulls have beat those teams, those same outlets that predicted, oh well, the Bulls really haven’t faced anybody. Come on, man. Let’s stop moving the goal post, bro. Stop moving the goal post. Listen, you you already know what it’s going to be. This is this is the the idea. And I’ll say this, uh, I I love what Declan Doyle said this to me when I we were talking to him in a press conference, and I think it’s something one that you should take out there in life, and two, shout out shout out Pat with the Declan Doyle. Little Dean Doyle drop. Little Declan Doyle. He’s a good guy. Uh, but but two, that you should just I think it’s it’s such a great analogy for sports. Uh, success is being successful. No, what did he say? He said success is having success in the moment you need to be successful. So basically, you’re 5 and0 right now. You could go 0 and5 just as easily. Absolutely. You have to continue to put this on display. You have to continue to build on the success that you’ve had this season. And the one thing that I do love about this, Hayes, is that it feels like it’s something that can be done. I don’t need Josh Giddy to score 32 points every single night. I’ve watched Josh Giddy helped this Bulls team win a game scoring 14 points when Modus Buzzellis stepped up and put up 27 points in that game. I don’t need Nikus to have 26 points every single night because I’ve seen Iodumu come out and have a 25point game this season. The scoring is unselfish right now from this Bulls team. And it truly is based on who has the hot hand that night, who has it going and who’s going to be able to slow somebody down on the defensive end. And I know first time the Bulls have been 5-0 since the 72-10 team. I’m not going to say that this is going to finish anywhere near that team, right? I don’t I still don’t believe the Bulls are going to go win an NBA championship this year. I’m still right like let’s let’s take this week by week. But when you got Kevin Herder playing lockown defense, and I’m not talking about like he’s just giving good effort. Kevin Herder shuffling his feet, getting the arms out, turning the defender, forcing him back out. Deuce McBride was in hell. Deuce McBride got a nice little handle. Usually, you’d be able to get past Kevin Herder in level that we haven’t seen from a total Bulls team in a previous uh era of this. We saw it in the second half of last season. I think we’re continuing to see it now. And for people that want to say it’s a small sample size, this is exactly the Bulls team that you saw last season. Yeah. With with better defense. I mean, they improved defensively on the second half of last season, but now they’ve refined that defense and taken it even a step further because again, these pieces have now, keep in mind what they did last year in that run that that that last 20 games that was with them all off chemistry alone. Now, they’ve had a training camp. They’ve had that to build off of what how they finished last season. And we lost Trey Jones. We lost IO towards the end of that like this off the vibes last year. Yeah. Yeah. So, hey, say what you will about this team. team. I know the naysayers are going to say what they what they want to say. The doubters are going to pull whatever they can to to to use it to to verify why they should have more doubt about this team. But I tell you what, watching this team, Pat, just it it has the feel of a team that we’ll see where the win loss record ends up shaking out at the end of the season. This feels like a team that’s going to compete in every game that it’s in and fight for those wins. And that’s the part that feels really refreshing about this team. And it feels like a team we going to have to say by the end of the year AK was right. AK was right. Kind of gross. kind of gross. It’s early in the season. I would rather say AK was right than wrong. But to me, like when you’re when you’re looking at a team right now, listen, they’re shooting the three ball incredibly well. 45% tonight from the field. They shoot they’re shooting from the field incredibly efficient. And they’re forcing teams to take tough shots on a consistent basis and basically saying it’s not we’re going to dare you to make shots. It’s we’re going to make it very hard for you to make shots. Carl Anthony Towns tonight um didn’t exist like that literally for large portions of the game. I forgot he was on the floor until you just saw some big dude guarding voos just like no that’s a foul you know I got to spin with it like like honestly like I I thought the Bulls did a great job really forcing and listen some guys are going to get off in that moment and some guys aren’t like OAI had a great night. I thought you made just about every single shot hard for Jaylen Brunson, but you kept allowing him and and this is the genius of the playbook. It felt like the entire game was let him get the ball cuz if he gets the ball, he’s going to shoot the ball. 25 shots tonight. He ended up with 29 points on 25 shots. That’s a great day defensively. Yeah. And those are the kind of games that you find a way to continue to win time and time again. Yeah. And and and that’s what this team has done. Like they’ve won in a v variety of ways. They’ve won with a a multitude of different players leading the team in scoring. Like every that’s why I say everything they’re doing, they’re doing it as a team and and they it seems like they trust. And Pat, I know me and you’ve been doing a good job at pointing out, but we got to do it again. This this Billy Donovan is coaching a hell of of a season so far. Bro, you want to know the two things I didn’t think I would say? Billy Donovan having a dominant coaching the defense that he is coaching right now. I don’t know if we can credit him with that or or or uh um what’s the assistance name that took over the defense this year? West Uniled uh with that. Um but you know, either way, like I love what I’m seeing there. Uh Hayes, no P will slander for me. I mean, I can’t believe I’m using these words with him, but as much as Billy Donovan is balling on one end and utilizing that piece Mhm. in his role, Patrick Williams has been elite this year. Yeah. in his role. That’s that’s in his role. In his role, very important in that everybody breathe. Patrick Williams has been elite this year and he hasn’t backed down. He ain’t been no punk. And it there were moments tonight where literally at the end of that game when or at the end of the half when uh end of the half or end of the quarter, one or the other, when Jaylen Brunson switched on to P will and that was the call out, I was like, I actually don’t think this is a move that you want to make right now. I feel like this is a bad situation for you. You got a lot of length guarding you right now. Yeah. So, it it just those two together are are two big surprises of the season. Not to say that I’m surprised Billy Donovan is doing this, but I’m surprised at how well he’s doing. Absolutely. Absolutely. Well, we are going to continue talking about this team. Josh Giddy, who uh much aligned this off seasonason on whether the Bulls should pay Josh Giddy or not. The Bulls end up settling with Josh Giddy at 25 million, right in between what both sides were looking at. Jos Giddy for what it’s worth to start off the season is off to absolute tear averaging over 22 points uh you know after scoring 32 tonight. Eight rebounds, eight assists. Josh Giddy is one of only three players averaging that right along with Nicola Joic. I can’t remember the third one is may maybe it’s Shay. I can’t remember off the top of my head. Um but how you feeling about uh Josh Giddy’s game today scoring 32 points. Listen, he’s balling. Um, and he he’s he’s making everybody who thought that this contract was a bad decision, was a no move, uh, was a a no movement one way or the other decision, look foolish. And me and you talked about this the entire off seasonason, like no matter what you say about Josh Giddy, Josh Giddy is going to make the people around him better. The biggest question was could he still be this kind of scorer that we saw in the second half of last season early on in the season? Really feels like he can be. I mean like bro listen I I’ve continued to say this Josh Giddy hoop like your favorite uncle. Yeah. I mean like he he it’s not pretty. It’s the the the the crossover dribble through into the lane into a spin move is very weird. but he’s 6’8 and so when he spins and he jumps, he’s right at the rim. So, it’s a pretty easy layup, especially when you got Jaylen Brunson guarding you. The offense is continuing to prove to be there, I think he’s gotten everybody involved really well. And the one thing that I thought was an undertalked about storyline for this Chicago Bulls team was the fact that it was the second year in the same system. He knows where everybody’s going to be. He knows where everybody should be, where the shooters should be lined up, and you can tell it in how he’s facilitating the ball. Oh, on top of that, he’s playing some pretty good defense as well. Yeah, he’s playing his I went over his defense today on Central. He’s playing some of the best defense of a point guard in the league right now. Like, there’s not a lot of great defensive point guards. I think people forget that, but Josh Kitty’s playing really near elite defense as far as what he’s allowing uh in shooting and things like that. Like Josh Gib seems like he’s in such a good rhythm right now and just a flow and it understands like he’s even doing things off ball Pat when Trey Jones has the ball in his hands and that was one of the weakest parts of his game was his offball offense because he had to have the ball in his hands. He’s even showing that that is also a thing. Yeah. No, 100%. I I think the continued success from him um on the defensive end is just I mean it’s the cherry on top right now. Um the it’s the thing that we least expected to be this good. Like I I figure the defense would be solid, but you know, you don’t want Josh Giddy to get into these one-on-one situations. The numbers would tell you you kind of do. Now, there’s a lot of help defense that goes into helping those numbers that again, it goes to this Bulls team being on a string. Uh, I haven’t looked at it updated yet, but I think the Bulls are playing in a zone at uh, I I think a top five rate in the NBA right now. So, a lot of help for this team here. But just like I love the fact that it it means something to him. I don’t know if you saw the miked up Hayes where it was Josh Giddy miked up and most of the highlights were him yelling at people to move their feet or to switch or to or to get like he’s truly becoming the leader of this team on both ends of the floor. I don’t think I expected that from Giddy and that is beautiful to see. Of course, you knew what he could do offensively, but he has truly become the leader of this team on both ends of the floor. Yeah. And not even just him becoming the leader as well, which you’re right, he’s becoming the leader. Uh, but also like his chemistry with Modis. And I think that’s one of the most important duos here on this team is if those two guys getting really good chemistry. Now, Modus didn’t didn’t score amazingly well or anything today. But like it’s just really good to see those two guys building that chemistry as well because those could be two of the guys that the whole backbone of what this team could be is built off of. Yeah. No. And and I think it’s going to be the biggest thing for you. Uh especially seeing how those guys run. Um I love what I’m seeing out of Modis early on in the season. Today wasn’t even a great day, but again, like what I love about what we’re seeing from this Bulls team early on, even in bad days, even in days where somebody’s not shooting the ball at an elite level, you’re still getting involved. You’re still cutting. Hey, I thought it was great because we’ve seen Mis do this and we’ve seen Josh do this. The play and and we don’t have V really on here, right? But the play where you know looking at this Bulls team overall V driving down the middle of the paint. We haven’t seen that a ton out of him over the past couple of years. Blowing past Cat defense collapses on him and Josh Giddy’s running out to the three-point line and he immediately stops and goes there’s nobody under the bucket. Runs right back catches the ball. Easy two-hand lay. We’ve seen Isaac Curl get one of those. We’ve seen Modis Buzzel get one of those. Those are the kind of plays, the easy buckets at the rim that make teams start to look around and just go, “What the f are we doing right now?” Like it already, it already seems like like for this team, too. Like teams are like, “Hey, but the the Bulls, they usually go away when we punch him in the face.” That’s not this team anymore. It’s just not like you they they they are like I mean, there still are some things that are self- afflicted that they got to get better at. I love that they improved the turnovers today. single-digit turnovers for I think the first time this season, which is really good, getting to the free throw line over 30 30 times today, like the combination of those things are really good, but like it it just continues to be that even with the Knicks adjusting today, which they did. They adjusted from taking three-pointers to them themselves started attacking the rim more and they found success with it. But then, you know, after about, you know, the most of the third quarter, the Bulls started figuring that out and then you can see the Knicks like, “Well, hell, we don’t know what the hell to do now.” Yeah, bro. like it you really and again we got to give credit to Billy Donovan on that as well like you really had them rattled today and and I think that’s the thing with uh what we’ve seen out of this Bulls team that is surprising and listen to quiet as it’s kept we’ve gone through this entire segment this is massive for the NBA Cup you know what I mean like won by double digits point differential matters in the NBA cup you won by double digits the point differential is going to mean a lot and again I don’t know if it means something to you or it doesn’t but this team hasn’t won a lot uh in its and you’ve got a chance to go out there and win something that maybe one day is going to mean something uh in the grand scheme of things or maybe is something that you direct or you look at, I guess I should say and um you say, you know, that team won that that signifies them going on and winning X Y and Z in the future. I I really feel like, you know, that’s kind of what we could start to look at with this Bulls team. And hopefully they’re able to go out here in this NBA cup and ball out. That’s a fact. But, uh, hey, before we get into, uh, talking about this this continuing on the team win, I mean, this defense looks elite. Hey, we need a little bump on that. Like what doing that? A little bump is crazy. Oh man. All right, Pat. The Bulls right now, uh, after today’s game, which it just updated, uh, that’s what I was looking at while you’re doing your ad read. The Bulls now have the fifth best defensive rating in the NBA. They were number one throughout the first like week of the season. Now they were outside of the first week going into the second, they’re fifth. They’re also sixth offensive rating. That’s a special spot to be in top five, I mean, top uh, 10 in both of those. But the defense for the Bulls is really something that stands out. We talked a little bit about Josh Giddy having his best defensive season. Nicola Vousvich is having an amazing season defensively as well. Already talked about Trey Jones and everybody buys in, but it it’s it’s not like it’s just everybody individually. You made a great point earlier on where you said the Bulls going into the zone and how that brings help defense for everybody. That’s something you need to do when you don’t have the individual one-on-one defenders. The question I want to throw to you on this one, Pat, does does the defense feel sustainable for you this season? Uh, you know what? Honestly, it does. And I think it it it goes back to that conversation that we had on the help defense, right? It goes back to that conversation about, you know, this Bulls team um being able to step up in moments where, okay, Josh Giddy maybe overpursued this, but we’ve got Kevin Herder right there ready to step up and pick up that man. And and what what really shows it to you is you’ve played some teams that swing the ball really well. the New York Knicks, the the or Orlando Magic kind of have have not done it as much, but the Atlanta Hawks swing the basketball really well. I thought early on, right, how you disrupted the Detroit Pistons who seem like they don’t have another shooter. But like looking at, you know, all all of these teams that have really good ball movement, all of a sudden you look around and you see a Bulls team that every opportunity they can, they are closing out and closing out hard. Sometimes it does go uh lead to some some goofy fouls, right? You had one on P will with Jordan Clarkson tonight. I thought Kevin Herder locked down. I thought that, you know, you had Vu switching out to the corner on some pretty big plays and V switching out to the corner with a Mitchell Robinson and and uh Carl Anthony Town’s lineup, crashing the boards off of that switch up, but Isaac Curl’s in there poking the basketball out or you got Josh Giddy down there rotating down and tipping the basketball back out, giving you an opportunity to grab that rebound. Like everyone is truly on a string as we talk about you have to be on the defensive end and it’s not elite defenders doing it right. If it was like hey we need to rely on Kevin Herder to play elite 101 defense like we saw on two plays tonight for the entire season we’re cooked. Yeah. But if I need Kevin Herder to have a couple of really nice defensive plays inside of a game plan where more times than not P will or I Dumu or Trey Young or I’m sorry Trey Jones can slide over and help you out in that situation. That’s a very different conversation to me. It is it’s a very different like and and that’s why like you said whether it’s Wes Unel, Billy Donovan, whoever it is that this team or this coaching staff is really coaching this defense well because it seems like they understand hey these are the individual limits of these players defensively. but this is how this matchup specifically these combination of players together can help overcome some of that or hey there’s this zone that we can go to to overcome some of that and that that level of intentionality as well as you got some players that do like there’s been like Kevin Herder isn’t the best one-on-one defender but there’s some possessions absolutely where you look at Kevin Herder and you’re like hey you can’t tell me he didn’t just clamp somebody up bro there was multiple times tonight yeah yeah so and I think here here’s the thing on top of that Hayes is it doesn’t feel like a defense that you can’t reinsert Kobe White into and it’s going to throw things off. Yeah. You know what I mean? Like that’s that’s the most important thing for me with all of this is I see I see people already sitting there talking about, oh, you know what happens when we reinsert Kobe White into this? Nothing. Like it’s it’s going to be just like this. In fact, I would say it may get a little bit better because we know Kobe’s has a willingness to try and be incredibly active on the defensive end. And now you get to move Trey Jones back to the bench. Yeah. Yeah. and and you know Trey for example today Trey passed up some open shots that Kobe would have took. And that’s no knock on Trey Jones because Trey Jones isn’t out there to be the Kobe White type shooter, but you could just see how it is. And people have this like this notion now that Kobe White’s some black hole. He’s not Zack Lavine. Like Kobe White has always been a player that’s willingly to give up give up the basketball and play within the confines of it. He scores because it’s needed for him, not because he comes into the game like I need to get my 15 shots today. Like I hate that people have started talking about him like he’s that type of player and that’s not Kobe at all. But listen, you you saw this work with Kobe last year. Yeah, you you saw how Kobe fit in with this. This is not, you know, oh my god, how are we going to reinsert a player that’s never played in a system like this? Kobe was phenomenal in this last year. Now, were there games where I thought that you needed Kobe White to step up and be better in? Sure. Those games probably still will happen this season. Yeah. But right now, what you’re seeing is a team that is running a very similar game plan with a higher paced offense than what you saw last season, but defensively a very similar game plan. Oh, and on top of that, you saw Kobe White work in this already. And you’re winning games doing it. Burst teams that are supposedly the best of the best in the Eastern Conference. That’s a fact. It’s a great place to be in right now. And you know what? It may not last all season. It probably won’t last very long, but Chicago Bulls are first place in the Eastern Conference right now. I’ll take it. Yeah. Listen, bro. I’m going to take everything in regards to that’s positive about my team because the Bulls are balling right now. And you love to see a team that’s coming out there fighting and competing and playing hard as a team. That’s what the Bulls are doing, bro. We got We got to do it again Sunday against the New York Knicks, this time in Madison Square Garden. Josh Giddy usually puts up really big performance in in MSG.
