Christopher Morell’s defense there, let’s be honest, is a work in progress that may never reach an elite level, and we need consistency. Bregman is a two-time World Series champion. He has a history of plate discipline, and he is arguably the premier name at third base in this free agent class. Many analysts are practically penciling him in as Jed Hoyer’s primary target. But it’s my job to look beyond the obvious. It’s why you come to this channel. And what my analysis and my conversations indicate is that prioritizing Alex Bregman could be a significant strategic mistake for the Cubs. Let’s look at the facts. We’re looking at the 2025 season. Bregman posted an 822 OPS. Good, right? But he hit only 18 home runs. For a player who once hit 41 back in 2019, that is a drastic drop off in power. The Cubs desperately need Thump in the middle of the lineup. We need a guy who changes the scoreboard with one swing. And it’s unclear if Bregman is that player anymore. Are we paying for the 2019 name or the 2025 production? But the biggest warning sign, the red flag that the Cubs front office is analyzing intensely is the durability. The hamstring injury history is troubling. He missed nearly half of the 2021 season with a similar quad hamstring strain. And in 2025, he again missed significant time, playing only 114 games due to a hamstring strain. Soft tissue injuries on players entering their 30s don’t usually get better. They tend to recur. Now, let’s talk money. Spottrack projections, which are generally very accurate, place Bregman’s market value at a six-year, $177 million contract. That is the exact same contract we just gave Dansby Swanson. The question the front office has to answer is, are we willing to have two infielders on identical $177 million contracts heading into their mid30s when one of them, Bregman, is already showing clear signs of power decline and a chronic hamstring risk. My analysis says that would be an unwise allocation of resources. So, if Bregman is the obvious but risky target, what’s the smart move? What’s the option that aligns with Jed Hoyer’s philosophy of intelligent value and not just spending to spend? I’m going to give you a name. Eugenio Suarez. I know what some of you were thinking. Suarez, he’s older. He strikes out too much. Yes, he is 3 years older than Bregman. And yes, his strikeout rate is high. But that’s where the surface level analysis stops and ours begins. Let’s compare the actual 2025 production, the season we just watched. As I said, Bregman had an 822 OPS with 18 home runs. Eugenio Suarez, he posted an 824 OPS, literally identical, but with 49 home runs. 49. That is not a typo. He hit 31 more home runs than Bregman while delivering the exact same overall production value ops and filling the Cub’s single biggest gap, elite power. Now, let’s get to the point that matters most to the front office. Besides the power, durability. Unlike Bregman and his recurring hamstring issues, Suarez is an iron man. He is incredibly resilient. Excluding the shortened 2020 COVID season, Suarez has played at least 143 games every single year since 2016. He is always in the lineup. Bregman has had two major leg injuries in four seasons. In a 162g game grind, availability is often the best ability. And now the clincher, the cost. While Bregman is seeking $177 million over 6 years, about 29.5 millav, the projections for Suarez, because he’s older, are drastically different. Spot projects a 2-year, $28 million contract for him. That’s a $14 million AAV. Let’s summarize this. The Cubs can get the same 2025 OPS production with 31 more home runs from a more durable player for half the annual cost, 14M versus 29.5 M and for 1/3 of the contract length, 2 years versus six. That, my friends, is the smart move. That is how a smart big market team operates. Paying Suarez $14 million a year allows the Cubs to use the other $15 million that they would have spent on Bregman to go sign an elite closer or fortify the bullpen. Bregman is the sexy name. Suarez is the winning move. My final analysis. Alex Bregman is a big name, but he represents too high of a financial and health risk for a declining power return. Eugenio Suarez offers the same production, massive game-changing power, and superior durability, all for a fraction of the cost. But I want to know what you, the Northsiders, think.
