Do The Maple Leafs Have A Goaltending Problem? | SDP

Anthony Sters has been hoham. Uh, I would kill for hoham since the Kraken game. Is he tired? Is he hurt? Or is he shook? Cuz it ain’t good. He hasn’t been this bad in three years. No. Right. Like 925 with Florida, 926 last year with Toronto. Um, what is it? Seven straight games with a save percentage under 900. Eight. Oi. So the Leafs are they are hemorrhaging chances and like early in the season he was giving them performances that they just frankly didn’t deserve. The Rangers game in particular like holy holy hell. Um that uh that second one you guys are a little off on that. It’s four. Oh Drew had us the wrong stat then. That a boy, Drew. That was Drew. Yeah, but I I trust Drew’s stats. If I can’t trust Drew’s stats, come on. Crap. Look, everything was 8.97 last night, 833 against Buffalo, 8.82 against New Jersey, and then 857 against Seattle. And the game before the 966 against New York. Ah. Oh, that maybe it’s the Leafs like maybe it doesn’t matter. Uh it’s not that. Um, you would expect there to be a noticeable chasm between him and Primo, and there hasn’t been. Now, part of that is Primo’s been better than I thought, honestly. Um, but, uh, yeah, he signed this big extension, and the reason he was given it is because he’s been so good. Um, so that’s pretty concerning. Now, a goalie, a good goalie, an elite goalie will cover up a lot of flaws. And maybe that’s what he’s been doing this whole time, but boy, it’s a lot more pronounced when the puck actually goes in. And like Willie when when they lost three straight games last year, year before, don’t remember. And he goes, “It’s three games, what’s the big deal?” I was like, I’m gonna lose my mind if you don’t absolutely turn into the Tasmanian devil after saying that because if you lose a fourth straight Yeah. I’m going to light my own hair on fire and they win three straight and then he goes, “Yeah, what’s the big deal?” That was funny. Oh, watch their [ __ ] man. Awesome. That is how you back your [ __ ] up. Stallers, valid as his criticisms were, has not backed it up at all and that’s a concern right now. Yeah. Um Jess, I know you have Do you do you look at the game specifically though and kind of excuse it away cuz they got run by New Jersey? You know, New Jersey is a better team. Yes. The Seattle game, that was the game where it’s ugly. New Jersey, I was angry at the whole team. I don’t I don’t just put that on stallers last night. How many do you want? One back. One maybe. The the second goal there where Dolma gets beat and then the Buffalo game. Is that on stallers? Like do we remember any ugly ones? Uh well the one that they won was Primo. Yeah. Off the top of my head I can’t right now. But so I don’t know. It might just be a little fourame blip where there’s maybe a couple he wants back. But I don’t know if it’s panic. Yeah. And I’m not panicking. I just think he’s not been great. like it two apparently underratedly big Jenga pieces got pulled out on the Leafs at the beginning of the year in Lton is obviously a huge part of their defensive structure and uh St. is supposed to be in a tandem with Wool. Yeah. And who’s back but hasn’t played yet. Neither of those people have played a game. Right. Right. Right. And they still have a winning record. Like I think the fact that they’ve played the way they’ve played and they still have a winning record and there’s reason to believe that help is on the way, it’s actually pretty encouraging. It bows well. Yeah. And if they win tonight, I believe they’ll match the exact same record that they ended last October with. Right. Four and one. Genuinely very very funny. Yeah. Which is insane. And like the Philly game on Saturday, that’s been kind of earmarked as a lot and return game. So keep your eye out for that. Finally, we will see the Toronto Maple Leafs in their purest form. I amum so Saturday and that game is very likely not going to be moved is potentially game seven of the World Series. Oh yeah. Yeah. I am potentially going to stream the most useless game in Toronto Maple Leafs history that starts an probably an hour. All right. Before game seven of the World Series. We can figure something out. Maybe. I don’t know. I’m I’m not worried about it. I’m not worried about it. I’m doing the whole game in a Jay’s uniform. Did you want to show this goal? The the do the sol. This is the one that drove me nuts, man. And this is not a goal he lets in last year. I like TSN’s breakdown of this cuz like Doi is weak on this. Farabe beats him too easily. Carlo does nothing. Nothing. Like I know you’re the you’re the safety valve there, but like this just going straight through Stallers and Farabby hadn’t scored in what was it since last year? 29 games or something. Some crazy number. It’s horrible. Which problem in particular uh do you hate about it, Adam? Uh, I think it was the S because Faraby doesn’t even really hit stallers, too, right? It’s not like he knocks Stallers. So, Anony’s got Listen, yeah, he beat Doy and and Carlos trying to, I guess, cover off a phantom guy he could pass to. Um, just your pad’s got to be down, dude. Like, I I He didn’t even try to shoot it up. He didn’t try to extend Stallers across the net and spread him out. He just went, I’m jamming this home. And Stallers, it just went under him. Most goals are a team effort and I like I hate the fly by on doi but like Carlo Benois’s got the e the other attacker. Benois has Lombberg. Mhm. Hit him. Mhm. This could have been if if this guy was a different guy and he’s just not. If Carlo was another person, he could have sent Farabe to Neptune. Or for God’s sake, give him, you know, on TSN, they’re like, I think it was Jeff O’Neal, he’s like, give him a cross check or something. Yeah. Or what if he just goes like this? Give him anything. And he sticks his stick out and just puts it in the way of the puck. I’m I’m holding out a bat right now. Just moves his arm and puts his stick there in between the puck and stallers. It probably isn’t just a tap in between Stalers’s legs. It shouldn’t have been a shot. No, but the fact that it was like it it became a shot and it was definitely one that should have been stopped. You know, the there was a goal Primo led in against the Sabres where it’s like, yeah, you were probably screened, but like put your pad down. Yeah. And that’s sort of how I look at this with Stallers. And I never thought I would have the same criticism for both those people. Yeah. Anyway, like we’re going through it like this is the thing I keep saying don’t people are like they’re they’re not as good without No, do not let these guys off the hook. These guys are extremely talented and can do great stuff. It’s it’s because of that that I get frustrated. But it is October and uh plenty of teams have a bad October and make the Stanley Cup finals. Hello Edmonton two years in a row. They’re not even having a bad October. I know they’re having a mediocre October. The bar. But that’s my [ __ ] bar by the way. Yeah. I want them to win. I don’t want This is a good spot like enough. This is a having high expectations. Uh usually doesn’t happen for teams that stink. No. Right. We have high expect. Was anyone else there when they won the division last year? Like Yeah. I know you’re different. I know you’re different. You won the damn division last year. The bar is up here. And you know, some people might be listening to this and like, oh, you sound kind of negative, you know, because they won last night. Just be happy they won. But there’s going to be an equal amount of people who are like, you’re not going hard enough on these guys because they barely eaked out a win against the Flames. I’m trying to be in the middle and going, they did some bad things, they did some good things. Ultimately, the good things were, and that’s why greater than the bad, and that’s why they won. That’s why I’m yay about it because it’s like it doesn’t matter. You can only play who you’re playing. Yeah. Uh, and hey, they won a game and uh, they outshot and dominated their opponent and that’s what we’re asking for and they did it. Two points in regulation. Yep. That’s fant. You’re not going to leave that and be upset. The only got two goals. I love that. Ask the Flames how they feel. H, you know, we almost beat the Leafs. You got zero points. Yeah. In a game that was tied with two minutes to go. Mhm. In a play in a play, by the way, where the Leafs ran into each other three stooges style almost leading to an odd man rush the other way and somehow 5 seconds later it’s in the back of your net. Yep. Like you you What do What do they come away with? What What do the Flames come away with feeling about this game? Yeah. Yes. What do they come away with? We We kept it close. Yeah. No, you got dominated for most of the game and you lost. You didn’t get a point. Yep. This is the Atlantic Division standings from October 29th, 2024. The Toronto Maple Leafs after 10 games were 54-1. Today on October 29th, 2025, the Toronto Maple Leafs after 10 games are 54-1. Goal differential of zero last year. Yeah, last year. What is it now? I want I want to see exactly how close they are. So 32 goals for 32 goals against goal differential of zero and this year go ahead after 10 games very close 35 goals four 36 goals against minus one they’re one goal off of just being the exact same team they are outrageously similar so I would say that so leaving means that currently if the numbers are to be believed no change they’ve saved $11 million and have the exact same October. That’s crazy, man. Go figure. I know Vegas is unreal. Uh that they’re not the same team. I don’t know if you noticed. So, like I don’t I always thought that was going to be a fine fit. Yeah. Um let’s focus on the Leafs here. They’ve done a lot of things I hate. They have. And that’s why I’ve yelled and screamed. But I’m telling you, I like what I’ve seen over the last three games. Okay, they haven’t even won all of them. That’s great. That’s great. They haven’t even won all. The NHL schedulers need to fix the Elite stupid schedule. Why did they have eight of 10 home games to start this? There’s some sort of reason for that and I don’t know what it is. It’s really stupid. They like to pack the American teams with road games because uh to avoid football, you know, on football nights. Why Why don’t the Leafs simply say no? So the the Canadian teams have more home games in the fall. Uh, it’s ridiculous scheduling. I get the impression that saying no to NHL head office about anything leads to bad things.

  1. Old and slow defence getting older and slower. Not sure why people thought the Leafs had an acceptable d-core. Getting run by the opposing team with no team response does not bode well for goaltending.

  2. I am a huge Matthews fan and have defended him in these videos because he is still a good two way player. But if this continues through November and into December, I would say its time to talk with him, Nylander, Reilly, about moving them. Get a haul of picks and start a true rebuild. Let Cowan and Robertson play top 6 minutes, bring up some young d-men and let them get used to nhl play

  3. Two things can be true simultaneously. Stolarz is nothing more than a serviceable backup on a cup contending team AND the team around him is soft af and incredibly mediocre.

  4. You don't have goalie problem ya defense blows Boston here watching loser carlo destroy ure team .ure real problem is mathewshes a quitter no heart lazy does not have the tom Brady gene or the Crosby gene he is not a leader an the team feeds off his lazy ass

  5. dudes been carrying us for over a year now he’s had a bad week because the team is so dogshit infront of him and we’re talkin like this lol

  6. for me it's not so much a goalie concern, it's more of the Leafs being too nice to opposing players who go near their goalies.
when your goalies know they're going to be, is are protected, it's a whole new game.
    PROTECT YOUR GOALIES!!

  7. I didn’t see the games only listened but I still think he’s fighting it since Seattle. Maybe he’s not concussed (although after the last one the bar hangs low) but still fighting it.
The first line (Matthews) must show up. It starts with them.

  8. I'm starting to worry, just a little bit, that Stolarz is becoming the next Jack Campbell. I think Stolarz will bounce back and be great again, but just in case let's keep the lines of communication open with Edmonton…

  9. This is a useless video but I understand you haven't discussed something. If he was letting in bad goal after bad goal I'd be concerned, but he's not. The team just allows far too many great chances against.

  10. Stolarz is at best or potential to be a good goalie. He is not and doesn't have the potential to be an elite goalie. With the horrendous play of the team and defensive laspses every night I would not be that hard on the net minders. Leafs are incapable of controlling the puck or the play. It is systemic throughout the roster. Everything I see usually ends up with a coaching change especially since options to move anyone anywhere is limited or zilch 😮😮😮

  11. Don't kill yourself analysing every aspect of hockey with Toronto. Just come and accept the obvious conclusion that the elite (regular season ONLY) Leafs are done, finished, full stop.

  12. Whatever plan Berube has for this group's style of play is clearly not happening. Either the team is really sh it or his system he is trying to put in place is not appropriate for this group.

  13. There's no team here anymore. I'm sorry but this thing has run it's course and they already climbed the summit and they're making the decent. Shanahan is gone. All these guys need to be traded away to Vegas and Toronto needs to start this over.

  14. It’s fun to watch some leaf fans cope to high hell for there team but so easily discount other teams! Leafs fans are the worst in sports! Cry when they win cry when loose blame everyone but themselves!

  15. Stolarz has been SPECTACULAR, except for a his most recent couple of games. The problem is he's set the bar so high, that everyone expects him to pull miracles out of his ass on every play. The team has let him down, and the miracles ran out. He is still playing well. You can't expect miracles every game… or ANY game, really.

  16. I feel like Jesse's point at the end of this video is an interesting one, and I don't know what to make of it. Leafs feel like they're playing worse this year than last year, but the record is the same. So if that's taken at face value, then they're fine. But on the other hand, they lost last year, so I think the bar can't be "as good as" when the end goal is to get a better result.

  17. They have no defence. the additions were supposed to make it harder on the opposition, Primeau was waived by Montreal after a few years of patience. They have a Treliving problem. The only way they won so much last year was if their goaltending was lights out near the top of the league. This year not so good as Stolartz does not look like he has in the past. He probably will come through it but it will be too late. Defence getting older and Reilly should be a winger. meanwhile last I heard Pittsburgh that was supposed to need a five year rebuild was in top three in league and Devils were first. So Keefe coaching not the issue and Dubas looks like he took blame for Shanahan machinations including the contracts Situation because not only would he not give autonomy to Dubas but he also vetoed some of his trades. Yes I know too late now ,move on but Treliving is a Shanahan hire!! Looks like another 58 years.

  18. Do you guys actually know anything about hockey??? No goalie is going to stop 95% those shots, the leafs defensive play is horrible. Screens in front of the net, cross ice passes into the slot, guys coming down the wing uncontested. You think a goalie is going to stop a 90mph clear shot from 20 ft out?? Or a shot from the point with 3 guys in front?? Get a grip, blaming Stolie makes you look dumb af

  19. The Carlo non-play on Farabe is some of the worst defending i have ever seen from an NHL defenseman. Carlo is complete trash, I would take an injured Justin Holl or Jake Gardiner over this guy.

  20. So when players other than rookies have career years it is irresponsible of management to build their team the following year as this is the new floor for these players. Plan for regression not improvement on 30 year olds

  21. Or Stolarz was never that good. Caught lightning in a bottle last year. Or we need Woll back to create that competition again… one thing i do know is Matthews and rest of the team should be grateful the Jays are in the World Series where most people don’t realize how pathetic they’ve been

  22. Stoli is now facing the same defensive lapses that Sammy faced, which is why his numbers are what they are right now. And you're also forgetting the fact that Stoli is still SAVING shots that have no business being saved. He's standing on his head so often that ya… he's getting tired of having to constantly make these saves 20 times a game. This is all on the TEAM and not on Stoli. The city has a good moniker.. "The Graveyard of Goalies".

  23. You mention the goal differential, but you did not look at the difference in terms of the quality of the competition. The 2025 calendar start of the Leafs is less competitive than the beginning of the 2024 calendar was.
