Brodie’s Breakdown vs. COL (11/1)
Brody Brazil with Drew Menda here at the tank following a 3-2 overtime Sharks win over the Colorado Avalanche. And Drew, I promise you, no matter how the result went today, what I wanted to talk about was that’s like seven straight really good showings by San Jose and against some very difficult teams. Very difficult teams. And this team was probably the most difficult when you look at the Colorado Avalanche and the firepower they have and the way that they started this game. Uh put the Sharks on their heels for good half of the first period. It was a a testament one Yarislav Ascarov hanging in there and we’re clear Yaruslav Ascarov and we’ve been waiting for him to maybe have that coming out party. Maybe this was it. Y but also as the game progressed I thought they evened things out in the first period. They were able to kind of just settle things down. Second period, we’ve seen these second periods with the San Jose Sharks all season long and and last year as well. The second period is completely under siege by the Colorado. Little little slow. Exactly. Well, they were they were slow. They weren’t move. They were they were mismanaging the puck. The only line that really got anything going was Ekkan’s line with Wenberg and and Kurishv. They got the play in the offensive zone. They were able to at least even out some shifts. But it was it was more because of, as you said, slow and poor puck management that caused the Sharks to have a really tough second period. but ask her off to have a brilliant second period. You know, with Philip Kersev, I wanted to talk about him getting a goal in regulation today, but obviously with the OT winner, now he’s in the forefront of our conversation. I didn’t know exactly what the Sharks would be getting in him. I saw his stats in Chicago from the last year or so, pleasantly surprised. And the last couple games now on a three-game goal streak, four-game point streak, he’s found himself, too. You know that our partner, our broadcast pier, we’re not peers. Randy Han is above us. He’s way above me. He’s above us. period. He said it was actually like three or four days ago talking about she showed me Kersev stat lines and he said look what he did when he was healthy a couple years ago against with Chicago wasn’t a very good team 17 goals and played very very well and he was talking about him and then the last two games now he did that I mean so I got to give Randy credit he knew exactly what he was talking about with Kruva but what he’s working very well with Ecklund and Wenberg he does a great job of being able to when when the puck comes in the zone especially, he’s a good job at sealing the boards, getting the puck down to Wenberg, and then getting in a position to score. This was a really drag play. I actually thought it was icing. I was mad the rest didn’t call icing. And then Wenberg brings it up and he’s already sprinted out of the zone. So quick. Yeah. And he’s And then that shot is a beauty. You know, I’m looking at Mlin’s statline from today. He’s got a number in every single category. Shots and takeaways and faceoffs. He was good on the dots tonight, too. And I feel like against some of the toughest opponents you could face, he does not disappoint. He is just looking more comfortable if that’s even possible by the game. We were talking about it between the breaks with Mlin that Mlin celebr skated with Nathan McKinnon and Sydney Crosby this summer and he has got great respect for those players and I think that is one of the things that drives him as far as a a player goes that I’m going up against the best in the league. I want to show them that I belong here. So there’s that competitive streak in him as well. He did so many things from helping out on loose pucks and then breaking the puck out of the zone. The the shot, the goal was fantastic. Oh my gosh. Yeah. Just and there was no traffic, no nothing. He just beat Mackenzie Blackwood up over the just beat him on the shot. And that’s his favorite shot, his f favorite spot. But he did so much. And I think that playing against those top players because of the respect he has for them, but because of his competitive streak, it brings out the best in him. You know, watching the Timothy LDR injury on the bench, it was hard to just digest what the heck happened, right? Cuz we need to see it in super slow motion to even understand the puck ramping up. But Drew, I got to be honest, he did not look great after that. And I I’m I’m fearing for the worst. We don’t know anything right now, but it did not look good. No. And so he’s sitting on the bench, okay, and the linesman is in front of screening him almost screening. So he doesn’t see the shot get deflected. Shakir’s doing what Shakir. I think it was secure stick on puck and it ramps up right off and he has no idea that the puck came off. He has no idea what hit him and he went down and as he was getting helped off I thought the same thing, bro. I thought, “Oh my goodness, the guy’s playing so well. He finally got healthy again.” And that has to happen. Terrible timing, terrible everything. You never want to see it, especially now. Awful. like in the final 30 seconds or so here you mentioned that maybe tonight tonight today was a basketball statement of the season I think this could qualify we’ll see where it goes from here doubt he’s going to get the start tomorrow in the back to back I don’t think bottom line is this is one you want to remember two or fewer yeah now we’ve talked about Yaruslav a lot and you know Yaruslaf was the number one guy that we all the press and the media and the you know instain inkstain scribes are the ones that said, “Hey, this was going to be the guy.” Yeah, he was going to be number one. We anointed him the spot. Well, we had to remember, and Ryan Morowski talked about it the other day, had to remember that the kids only placed, first of all, was 23. He’d only played like I think it was like 18 games coming in the National Hockey League this year. Right. Right. Not a lot with Nashville before this. And I and I was one of the guys that was that was tooting his horn because for crying out loud, I watched him last year with the Barracudi. He was fantastic. He’s his AHL numbers are through the roof. So I was thinking he’s going to shut out everybody starts going to go 82 and0. He’s going to be fantastic. Well, the game’s not like that because the other team gets paid to play too, right? And he had some struggles early, but he always was that guy. You better practice, I practice. You see him coming out early working with Thomas Spear. He continues to work and continues to get better. And today he gave the Sharks not only a chance to win, but as I said on on the air, the win without him today, who knows? But it did get interesting at the end there. It got spicy. Yeah, he had to make some great stuff. First of all, that one that goes off I I don’t know who it went off of. Yeah. But it goes and it hits the post. I saw that. Yeah. But then before that with the, you know, the archers airbay impersonation of going out and playing the puck and then having to make a check was pretty interesting as well. But it did get spicy. But he played a whale of a game. We’ll know that as earned it when he gets the Asi like everybody used to have in this building. Drew is pulling a double header off to the Cuda game. I’m going to let you go. Thanks, buddy. Okay.

What a performance by Askarov. Celebrini in the 3rd period made the slickest slip and dangle right through 3 Avs that collapsed in on him in the 3rd period; Blackwood made the save, but Mac made it look so damn effortless, just unreal level of talent on that young dude. The light at the end of the tunnel is starting to look like the promise land, not an oncoming train. LETS GO SHARKS
