Here with you on this Monday after the Pelicans go 0 and2 over the weekend, starting the season 0 and6, it’s decision time for the Pelicans. I’m going to look at three of the biggest decisions they need to make. First, starting with head coach Willie Green. That answer feels obvious. Then I want to get into the players. What is this team? Are you trying to win now or for the future? who stays, who goes, and then ownership needs to decide what they want this franchise to be. We’re going to look at all of those questions and answer them in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans is brought to you by Game Time. That means you listen Monday through Friday to Lockdown Pelicans. And if you’re an Every Dare, let me know in the comments down below. Let me know how you’re feeling about this Pelicans team in the comments down below. So, I want to get into oh boy all of this one because this is just a failure on so many levels around the New Orleans Pelicans right now. Starting the season 0 and six, you got a brief glimpse of a competitive team on Friday against the Los Angeles Clippers losing 126124 on a last second Kawhi Leonard mid-range jumper that was long. an incredible shot. Not much you could do to defend there, right? You saw a glimpse that this team can be good or at least be competitive. And competitive is the word that I want to focus on, not wins or losses. I’m going to give you a quote from Joe Dumar during his introductory press conference. Quote, “The first thing you have to get to is we compete hard every night. If you don’t establish that in your building first, you’re just talking. You’re just giving quotes out at that point.” For me, it’s a process of uh it’s a process of establishing a hard competitive playing team every night. Then we will get to the wins and losses. End quote. You just lost by 30 something to OKC after losing by 30 something to the Nuggets and 30 something or whatever the final scores were to the Boston Celtics. You know, you have not been competitive. Joe Dumar is the guy who is in charge of the team, who has built a very turned over roster more so than any other team in the league. This team has not been competitive. That hasn’t been there. We know the team is capable of it with that loss to the Clippers erasing a big deficit that they were in. That was cool. You can see a glimpse of where the team should be. They were down by as many as 17 in that game and battled back to take a lead. But you haven’t done that on a nightly basis here, right? You know, we compete hard every night is the quote. They haven’t competed hard every night, right? They have to make a change. If they’re not living up to what Joe Dumar has said, that means he needs to fire head coach Willie Green and they need to make a change there. This has felt like a foregone conclusion. It’s felt inevitable. You know, I’m recording this. It’s Sunday at 5:37 p.m. I hate that it’s dark outside already. And Monday is decision day. If they don’t want they didn’t want to fire him on the road trip, sure, whatever. They should have done it after the Nuggets game, but okay, whatever. The first decision they need to make is what is going on with Willie Green? What are they doing there? If Joe Dumars wants to believe in that vision where they are competitive every night, we’ve seen that doesn’t happen here. They need to do something differently. Look, even against the Thunder, this Pelicans team was about as healthy as they’re going to be. Really, the only significant person who wasn’t playing was Dejante Murray, right? is significant, but whatever. You’re not expecting him to play right now. This is as healthy as they’re going to be. They weren’t competitive in this game against an OKC team that is missing like three of their four best guys, something along those lines here. You know, that is shocking to see in my opinion here. You know, there was no Chad Homegrren, no Jaylen Williams, no Lou Dort, no Kenrich Williams, right? No Topic for the Oklahoma City Thunder. It’s one thing to lose. The Thunder are good. Best team in the league, right? They’re off to a 7-0 start. I don’t have a problem losing to the Thunder. It’s how you lost to the Thunder. Right. The biggest lead here, 36 points. 36 points. That’s what you were down by. You were down 20 before half. This is unacceptable. This is unacceptable at this point. There’s no offensive identity. Look for a team, you know, there’s no offensive identity for a team that has Zion Williams and Trey Murphy, Jordan Pool. There’s enough offensive talent here, especially, and we’ll talk about him in the next segment, Jeremiah Fears, looking really good, really good for a rookie. You You can’t put together a coherent offense. Their offensive rating in this game was abysmal. It would rank 27th in the league, which coincidentally is where the Pelicans rank in terms of offense through the first six games. There’s enough talent here that that should not be the case. Even the points in the paint, this was supposed to be a strength for New Orleans this year. they were showing it off in preeason here was 38 to 48 in favor of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Pelicans couldn’t even get above 40 points in the paint in this one. It what is the team? Who is this team? All of those questions are just out there and it’s not coming together. And in a season where you kind of had to make it come together, this needs to be considered unacceptable. At a certain point, there needs to be accountability and it does not feel like there is any whatsoever with this franchise right now. I’m I said early on, right? Sure, let’s go by Joe Dumar’s comments. We’ll get to the wins and losses later, but be competitive. That’s what you could see from this team or what it should be and they haven’t been. It comes down to that. They are not a competitive team right now and they absolutely need to be. So unless Joe Dumar is going to like really believe in his vision, you know, you got to fire Willie Green. It’s that simple. You have to do something. It’s just not going to change, right? Even after you got limbasted by the Nuggets and this team was the laughingtock of the league. You came out and you competed against the Clippers. Good. Glad you could totally see that coming. I, you know, said it on the show. I said it, you know, to people in person that you would see this happen. They were going to get a bump for a game or two, right? Well, it was one. You couldn’t even carry that over from one game to the next. One game to the next, you couldn’t even stay competitive. It’s not working. You have to make a change to try something. Look, Willie Green’s a bit of a scapegoat. He’s got his own failings, and we’ll get into that when we do a post-mortem of some of this. But it’s not working at the end of the day. And if he need it, that’s how it goes. You’re the head coach. you’re kind of the first person to take the blame for it. For better or worse, fair or unfair, it’s how it goes. And that needs to happen here with this team. Speaking of with this team, what is the vision for the team? That is a decision. That is a question. Question that needs to be answered. A decision now needs to be made. Let’s talk about that coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans. Today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans is brought to you by Robin Hood. For your second listen, it’s Locked on Saints with host Ross Jackson covering everything black and gold. New QB. What did that look like? He’s going to break it all down over the Locked On Saints podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Your team every day. So, let’s keep looking at this team. And I I have a question. It’s a rhetorical question. This was my note. You know, I planned out the show. There’s like a little rundown I have up on the screen of it all. Sometimes it’s like in-depth notes. This one actually has a lot. Sometimes it’s not. Um, for my second segment here, like the qu just goes, what is this team? Are you a win now or for the future team? So, I’ll ask you, what is this team? Right. One of the things that I talked a lot about here in the offseason, the everydayers have heard this, was the Pelicans are attempting two timelines. Jeremiah Fears and Derrick Queen trading up to get Derek Queen and sacrificing next year’s pick. You know, Joe Dumar can say there’s no wins or losses. We’re putting on this like it was very clear and this ties into ownership and we’ll get into that in the next segment here. They want to win, which look, it’s the NBA. You run a franchise. You should want to win. I don’t mind that. But two timelines doesn’t work, right? Derek Queen, the guy that you I don’t want to say they mortgaged the future for. They own their own first round picks beyond next season. Next year’s draft looks to be very good, but at least this is all settled then. And look, you miss out on one pick if if Queen and Furies are good. It sucks, but you can still move forward and build a competitive team because you own your own picks and things like that. It doesn’t it doesn’t delay you a ton. Um, it it’s not great, but it doesn’t delay you a ton. That’s assuming Derek Queen works out. So, the guy you mortgaged your future for did basically didn’t play in this game against the Thunder. He didn’t check in until 6 minutes and 51 seconds remaining in the game. They were down 20 to 30 points the entirety of honestly three quarters on most of fourth four quarters, right? Cuz this happened in the first. It if you’re going to be down that much and you you realize you’re not able to come back and the Pelicans really did nothing to chip into the lead. There was a mini run in the middle of the third quarter where they got it to listen to this 15 points instead of 25 plus. But at the same point, like you weren’t coming back to win this game. Why are you not playing the young guy that you mortgaged your future for to get him some development and to get him just out there on the court, you know? And it shows you the problem with two timelines. Rookies don’t help you win. They don’t help you win. Look, I thought Jeremiah Fears was was good in this game. 16 points on six of 13 shooting. He was four of eight from three. That’s a great number. Four rebounds, four assists, but five turnovers. And while he played well against the Clippers, too, and looked really good in that game, 13 points, eight assists, no turnovers. He was one of four. He’s four of 14 shooting, they’re rookies. They don’t contribute to winning ways immediately. And so, can you play them in these kind of things? And these two timelines approaches like collide. They don’t work together here. And it creates this problem where you you mortgage the future for this guy and you’re not going to play him. I if he couldn’t help you come back from 15 down, why did you trade for him? What is the plan here? What is the timeline here? What is this team here? Right? And right now, you don’t know. And I have said the Pelgans need will eventually this season need to make a decision on which timeline it is. If it’s win now, you make win now moves. If it’s not, you make for the future moves. Simple as that. And for the future moves means not fire sale per se, but trading away guys at the trade deadline and acquiring future draft capital assets, all of that. Two timelines doesn’t work. You’ve seen it clear as day, particularly emphasized in this game by Derek Queen not playing till beyond garbage time started for New Orleans. You can’t do this. This is organizational misalignment. And beyond it just being misalignment, it’s an organization not knowing who they are. This is a franchise, a team that needs to do a lot of serious self-reflection on who they are at all levels, what they want to accomplish, how they best go about doing that. We’ll get into the next part here, which is kind of like leadership with all this. Do you trust leadership to do that? the leadership of this team, whether that’s the front office, whether it’s ownership and all that. Probably not right now because they don’t look like they know what they are doing. They don’t look like people that you would trust to run this sort of thing. Maybe because the process to get here was pretty broken in the first place. This shouldn’t be okay. These are the people that it’s tough to hold accountable for this sort of thing. We talked about accountability. Look, it’s easy to hold Willie Green accountable. You fire him. It’s how you do it. It’s how you show accountability. But Joe Dumar’s and others, it’s a little bit more difficult. But the moves they have made this off season don’t look particularly great at this point. Like it it’s not even that’s putting it mildly. They look terrible right now. The national media is going to be on this story starting this week. I can tell you that. And it’s not going to be pretty. They have a perception around them and they have done absolutely nothing but make it worse. The perception from this off season to now has made the has gotten worse in my opinion here. So, what they need to start to do is do some serious self-reflection. I have questions if they’re going to be able to actually do that. And once they do, you need to decide what direction are we going in? Winning now or are we building for the future? Cuz two timelines doesn’t work. You need to ask, is Zion Williamson a winning player? Or do you even have the roster to put around him to make him a winning player? If you don’t, then why keep going down this road? You’re shuff, you know, it’s the the idea of shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic. Jeremiah Fears looks like the truth. He looks like a very, very good player. You know, this team was lacking a lot of creation the past couple of years. And you can see that Jeremiah Fears brings that creation both for himself and for others on the team. For a rookie to come in against a good defensive team like the Clippers and have eight assists, zero turnovers while running the point guard spot and be by far the best out of the starters in that game is very impressive. Right? You’ve seen some of the scoring for him. You know that his three-point shot should be able to develop. four of eight against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The rest will come with time. This does look like a lead guard that you can build around having someone that is the archetype of an advantage creator. And we’ll spend more time talking about this some point in the future. What’s an advantage creator? It’s someone who basically gets defenses rotating when whether they drive, whether it’s their court gravity, however they do it, they essentially draw two to the ball or force defenses into scramble mode or to rotate over, which means eventually if you move the ball around, you’ll find an open man. You’re creating an advantage, however you create it for the offense. Jeremiah Fears is an advantage creator. Zion Williamson is an advantage creator, too. You need many of those type of guys on your team. You have it in Jeremiah fears who just turned 19. You have what looks like the core piece going forward. How do you build around that piece is the big question. We’ve seen this team in the Anthony Davis era and Zion Williamson era try and do this too quickly, hit the gas too soon. With Jeremiah Fears, if we call this soon to be the Jeremiah Fears era, how are you going to go about doing that? This team needs to answer that question. That question that’s going to lead us up to the trade deadline, but that might be the most important one for this franchise right now. Willie Green’s an immediate short-term thing that probably won’t change a ton. Um, but you can take advantage of this for Jeremiah Fierce in the future. Think about that question. Coming up next, what does ownership want? That’s a big one. They need to make a decision. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans is brought to you by Rugette. Let’s be real, making excuses doesn’t solve anything. We’ve heard them all before. It’s just stress. I’m tired. Josh Lloyd the goat’s going to help you win your league. Um and get bragging rights over your friends. That’s always a good thing here. Let’s continue talking about kind of the decisions the Pelicans need to make. We’ve kind of focused on Willie Green, the head coach. We just focused on a little bit more about the players. What direction do you go in? How do you build around this team? There there’s a there’s a larger question here and that’s around ownership and I use that kind of as a loose term here. Ownership needs to decide what they actually want. Do they want to win? Do they just want to be whatever? Do they just not want to care? They just need to decide right now because the way they hired Joe Dumars and the process to go about that, you know, if if you’re if you know my show, I ripped it. I called it lazy because it was there wasn’t a process. They just hired someone they were familiar with who admittedly has won an NBA title as an executive is a basketball hall of famer, but this wasn’t like an exhaustive process to find the best person for the job. They just wanted somebody to do it and they wanted someone they felt comfortable with here, right? They hired Joe Deumar because he’s friendly with people who kind of make decisions around all of this. It was a lazy hire. This isn’t an okay process for that, right? You know, if there were mandates on Joe Dumar’s to keep Willie Green, you know, it’s been reported and he said otherwise. He owned that it was his decision. You can’t have mandates from ownership, right? Like this puts the team in a lose-lose situation here with it all, you know. Um, and we’re going to get more into this probably in tomorrow’s show about why it’s so disastrous to not fire Willie Green in the offseason. But if if there were mandates, if there were mandates, then this is a significant failure on ownership because do not doing this in the offseason really basically threw this season in the trash before it began. If this is a Joe Dumar’s decision and there were no mandates as he owned it himself, then this is a huge failure on him. Either way, there is a failure and there needs to be some accountability for it. Joe Dumar has not put this team in a good position right now. Jeremiah fears might be great, but there’s definitely been some hurt here, right? You know, in terms of ownership, look, they’re not Gail Benson’s not selling the team. I’m not even looking for Gail Benson to sell the team, anything like that. But ownership needs to be hands-off with all of this. You know, Mickey Lumis, his name comes up a lot. He doesn’t directly have anything to do with the team. you know, he doesn’t have input on like player personnel or anything like that, but because he’s friends with Joe Dumars, he definitely had an indirect impact on that hiring. You can’t do that. Even setting aside Lumis’ recent tenure with the Saints, he’s not a basketball guy and should have absolutely nothing nothing directly or indirectly with the Pelicans. if he’s asked to give feedback or his opinion on it, he should say no. Okay, we’ll get more into this likely this week when it comes to it, but you need to hire someone and just let them do their thing and there should be no constraints whatsoever on it. And Joe Dumar has said there are no constraints. I’ll take him at his word here and say then he threw this season in the trash before it already began while making a win now move. This is the type of thing that honestly should potentially get you fired. That’s how bad the off season appears to be for New Orleans right now. Now, there might be time to salvage it. It’s likely not Willie Green who’s going to do who’s going to do that. You’re going to need to make it somebody else. But they need to make a decision here. And and this one’s obvious. Everyone around the league I have talked to, media, people with teams, everyone agrees on what needs to happen with Willie Green. There is one area that seems to at least early on not have thought that and everyone thought this this offseason too for the most part that was Joe Dumar’s andor ownership the people who actually make the decision about that the people who can make this happen or not that’s a concern if you want to win if you want to be competitive in Joe Dumar’s you know words you got to make a change and if they don’t that’s the biggest red flag. That’s the biggest red flag of all here. They need to really, again, everyone at all levels needs to do some serious self-reflection here about this and what they do and how they fix this going forward. It’s it’s not like this team is wrecked for years, right? You can kind of look at like rookie contracts and be like, well, they’re six, seven years not having a pick next year hurting you. Eh, Derek Weed’s good. You still have him under contract and you moved it up a year and it’s not it’s not a crippling thing. It doesn’t look good. It doesn’t put you in as good of a position as you could be if you had additional first round picks next year. And the and the Pacers pick came into that and I view that one more as bad luck than anything else. So, I’m not going to rip them for that one as much. But, you could be in a better position. The good news is the band-aid comes off after this coming off season and you can go forward from there. But it does in theory set you back a little bit, you know, at least one year, which is not what you want. You can’t be doing this particularly in a small market where there’s much less margin for error here. Ownership, the front office needs to decide what they want out of this team and communicate that. Everyone needs to make a decision here. We’ll see if there’s a big decision with the head coach tonight, tomorrow, depending on when you’re listening to this. Hopefully, we’ll find out. If not, we’ll break that down, too. We’re going to cover it all over here at the Lockdown Pelicans podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. As always, I’m your host, Jake Madison, Nola Jake on Twitter, and I’ll be back with y’all maybe for an emergency show tomorrow. See y’all next time.

  1. Joe may have to blow it up. Current roster is not good enough to go anywhere this year, and the timeline to get max value for trey, z, herb is this year. Maybe that has been joes plan all along. But maybe a different coach can turn it around.

  2. Gayle Benson is so out of her depth running professional sports franchises. She’s surrounded with power players who live in their own hubris-filled echo chambers. Mainstream local media won’t call them out, so guys like Jake and Kushner have to instead.

The rot is at the top.

  3. This TEAM HAS 6'10 PLAYERS TAKING 3 POINTERS. THEY ARE NOT GOOD AT THIS . THESE DUDES SHOULD LIVE IN THE PAINT. INSTEAD THEY GET NERVOUS BECAUSE THE OTHER TEAMS ARE MAKING 3. IF THATS YOUR GAME PLAN THEN PRACTICE THE 3 POINT SHOT AND NOTHING ELSE. THEN LOSE BECAUSE THE 3 POINT SHOT IS A HIGH PERCENTAGE SHOT WE FALL BEHIND BECAUSE WE CANNOT MAKE 3 ,THEN IF YOU SUCK AT 3 PLAY BULLY BALL INSIDE THE PAINT AND LET THEM GET IN FOUL TROUBLE. COME WILLIE IAM NOT EVEN A COACH AND CAN SEE THIS !!! WHY U CANT

  4. Don’t think this is Green’s Fault but, He is The HC so, They’re gone 1) Fire Him in a Weekish 2) Trade Zion by The Trade Deadline 3) Trade Poole by Summer 26!!!

  5. The problem is the pelicans need to leave new orleans and go some else so we dont have to worrie about this anymore, dealing with the 1-8 saints is more than enough…..

  6. We’re the worse team in the West and maybe the entire NBA right now. Three 30 point losses and we’re just not competitive. You’re right on point Jake this team has no identity and Zion is not the guy to carry this team. 7 years and I don’t see much improvement to his game. His jump shot is still below average. He is who he is. He’s a PF who attacks the paint and that’s it. Unfortunately in today’s NBA that’s not going to win you games. This team needs to build around Fears. Fears play style will win you games in today’s NBA. He is a true point guard who can control the tempo, attack the paint, and a decent shooter. They are also not winning bc Trey Murphy is really underperforming. At best he should be the 3rd or 4th option on this team. He is not a playmaker he’s a catch and shoot. He looks uncomfortable trying to attack the paint and passing the ball. They need to stop having him play the point like BI, he is no where near the talent BI was. Treys is a great catch and shoot player but he is not a playmaker and he looks uncomfortable acting as a playmaker. Hopefully after they fire Green they will have a coach who can put these players in the best position to succeed. It’s inevitable at this point that Willie Green will be fired.

  7. The more you think about it the GM is like alright I got you 2 first round picks do something with it and if you dont I'll fire the HC and I'm Trading Zion and use that capital to better the team 🤷🏽‍♂

  8. If you keep Green, you’re telling the players there’s no organizational accountability. You’re also committing to lose this year, which, WHOOPS! Thanks Troy Weaver!

Willie has to be gone come Monday afternoon. I’m going to the game Tuesday, either to boo non-stop or celebrate the page being turned. And if Willie IS still there, that’s the last game we attend until he’s gone.

I’m picking some other teams to also follow this year, just so watching NBA games isn’t so depressing all the time. We’re looking awful on this season’s timeline, and because of Troy Weaver’s weird love affair w players from the DMV area, we don’t have the best two picks in next year’s draft. Nothing to look forward to either way.

  9. Will green must go. Defense must be imposed, stop the ball, move a lot! Those who do not act competitive on defense can go now.
Ownership does not care, Dumars step up.

Nothing happens, do a fire sale, get picks back, play the rooks!
