Connor Bedard nets first career hat trick, Jonathan Toews set to play Blackhawks for first time

Although, correct me if I’m wrong, the Dodgers are up 3-2, right? They count that as two games. They’ve got to do something. No, they did not. Maybe within 18 innings, still one game. Okay. Well, 18 in. It just seemed awful long. No, it’s just like it just it had to wait longer. Uh I can’t believe I can’t believe we haven’t talked about the story of the night, which is which is Connor Bard, the Blackhawks. Well, I was waiting for that. I know, but I you usually come in champing at the bit. Well, I know, but I want to be respectful to the World Series. It is the fall classic. But let me tell you, Hawks are very interesting. Senators aren’t a classic in the fall. You You don’t have to restrain your enthusiasm, Hawks fans. You can talk hockey. It’s okay to embrace this moment because 10 games in, the Hawks are fun. And Bard, I was looking for my hat. It was like, “Okay, I’m going to throw it at the television set.” I wasn’t there when he finished scoring his third goal. I was there at the beginning of the night where it was electric. I know attendance is down for the first few games that how can attendance ever maybe just a matter of early season cabbage week nights. Maybe it’s a cost thing have to reear people’s trust. Do we not have enough money in our in our town? I I don’t know what’s going on. And tickets are expensive. They are expensive. And I think that maybe people also find it easier to find the Hawks on television this year. CHSN is easier to find and it’s a great broadcast. People might be staying at home, but when you go and I can tell you from being there for from the at the beginning of it, it’s a really cool atmosphere. And you’re seeing a young team starting to play and they’re aggressive, they’re fast, and they’re fun. And Bard last night now has in 10 games he’s he’s got six goals and six assists, 12 points. point a night guy. You you jack up with the hattick, you jack up that goal hundreds of points. I just It’s great. It’s really good. And his goals were really good. No cheapies. The goal that the first goal was that the one on the sideline. He had absolutely no no path to goal and he lifted the puck up, put it right over the guy’s shoulder. I’m telling you, he’s awful good. And the third one, upper right hand corner of of the goal, top shelf, if you will. And it was one of those plays that only guys with that kind of puck control can make. And then the velocity coming off the stick, that was, you talk about a special goal scorer, that was the special. And Connor Baddard reminded everybody last night, number one, what he’s capable of, but also what he’s committed himself this off season. Yes. Last summer, he kind of disappeared for five months. He declined a chance to play internationally. He went back home to Vancouver and by all accounts worked on his body, of course. Look, and Sunday night against the Kings, he won 10 faceoffs out of 18 opportunities. And that was the highest total of his career. And then he followed that up with a hat-tick. This is a more all-around player doing the little things, a little feistier, and you like to see it. It’s just a lot of fun. And then he got other guys Frankie Nazar, you’re going to get an empty netter. You’re going to get an empty netter when you’re the fastest guy on the ice. That happens. Man, did he fly down that the ice with that? They fouled him and he still threw the thing and then and then then after the hattick, you know, they’re they’re mixing it up with the Senators who came in second that leg of a backto back after winning three in a row. Then they got feisty and it got chippy at the end. They got all the penalties. Busi’s getting in a fight. Renzel gets thrown down. But that’s what you like to see even after. Looked like he got popped in the cheek earlier. I don’t know. He looked like he got the wrong end of a bar fight. He looked like he got assaulted. He did. He’s a big kid. Yeah. Still a kid. He’s a child. And you pointed out before the show no longer a teenager. Yeah. They said on the broadcast that that I think it was um Levino his he had a birthday. Now they have no teenager. They’re all in their very early 20s or 20, but there are no teenagers right now on the black. You look at the core of this team. Still very young, but no more teenagers. Bard and Nazar offensively, Renzel and Levino defensively. Those four guys are still early 20s and they have a long time to grow into being an NHL player, maturing, and they’re already very skilled. So, it’s a lot of fun to watch this Hawks team through 10 games be better than people thought. And here they are with Frankie Ner is a Michigan man. Did he get a degree? Cuz he usually you come out in your junior year, right? It’s a very good question. He’s got the contract. I wonder if he has his degree. I think he came out after three years. Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. So, maybe not. I wonder that’s a good good question. He’s a very He seems like somebody who would want that. Yeah, he also seems super bright and he made a joke about not everyone went to college or something. He made a joke early in the year about some of the rockheads in the uh in the locker room. Well, a lot of a lot of guys like baseball get drafted right out of high school or juniors. Yes. They don’t go the traditional high school route. They don’t go the traditional college route. Yes. And they don’t play college hockey like Mlin Celibbrini did, like Frankie Nazar did. So kind of Bard for instance. Yeah. So Bree’s doing pretty well. I know. That’s what somebody said last night when I was like getting excited about uh Bard. Badard and texting with my son and he’s like, “Yeah, Melbourne, you you should look at last night’s highlights. Just let me enjoy this. I’m not I’m not comparing this. I know. Everyone’s gonna It’s okay. I’m just I’m lamenting that they didn’t get It is funny because you get excited about Baddard with the hattick, the first one of his career, and then you’re like, “Oh man, he’s got 12 points in 10 games.” And then you look at the NHL points leaders, he’s like, “Wait, 23rd?” Yes. Crazy. There’s a lot of good young players. There’s a lot of good real young players in the NHL get getting it done like Connor Badard is. uh in Chicago. He’s beginning to show again what made people so excited about getting him in year three. This is the year that he’s beginning to take off. And he’s 20. He’s 20. He’s not even legally able to have a drink. It’s just It’s extraordinary how good he is at such a young age. You know, they got now tomorrow years in they go on the road for a really fun trip. They start with Winnipeg against Jonathan Taz tomorrow night. It is reunion week tonight. Zack Lavine back at the UC. Tomorrow the Hawks play Jonathan Ta. Oh wow. That’s fantastic. It is pretty cool. Yeah. I I mean I you know we’ve talked about Zack Lavine but he’s no Jonathan Taz. I mean there’s no comparison. No comparison in terms of what you know the guy would It will be Cups captain or captain. It’s going to be odd to see Taser in a opposite uniform against his former team, the one he defined for so many years, than it will be to see Zack Lavine in a Kings uniform tonight. And and I am really happy that TA is back because I don’t think he really wanted to leave. I think he had to. And I think it’s different when when kind of injuries and pain and all that stuff get in the way of a guy’s career. The fact that he’s found some answers wherever he went, he went everywhere. Didn’t he go to India at one point and uh and he’s back playing in the NHL? It just makes you kind of happy. There’s so much mystery surrounding what happened to him and how his body broke down. There’s so much mystery happening like really in India. I mean, it’s almost like the shadow or something. It’s an old time radio. What happened to him? Well, he found he went to India and apparently helped heal himself. There’s mystery in that statement. That’s what I’m saying. You went to India, came back, and now you’re revived and rejuvenated. And we had the pictures on Instagram. I don’t know who what happened there. What did he do there? Yeah. Do they do they play hockey in India? No. No. But they uh learn how to heal a little bit. He does sound and look like a revived hockey player. Yeah. And he is playing some meaningful minutes, I believe, on the second line for the Jets. He’s got maybe seven points, five points. He’s playing a role. Is he causing a lot of problems there? You know, he goes from being the great captain to now he’s not a captain, so he can really act up. I don’t think so. Wouldn’t that be hilarious? Yeah. Trying to be the He’s like a juvenile delinquent. He’s the guy that is the problem child for the coach and he goes back home and starts missing practices and starting fights and he’s the opposite of what he was. Exactly. Exactly. The opposite of everything he did here. Everything that used to annoy him now he represents. I don’t think he’s like that. No, I don’t think that’s possible. It just is somewhat I I remarkable is probably too strong. But when you see Jonathan Taz back with the Jets and then you see you peek at the schedule and you see when did they play the Red Wings and Patrick Kane? Kane and Taz are still in the league. Guys who came into the NHL and helped the Hawks start their ascension back in 2008. Yeah. and you realize how long ago that was. And I mean, you know, Kainer never left. And I always thought that that his game was such that he was going to be able to play a lot longer than Taves cuz Taves was a guy that whenever you needed anything, you needed someone in front of goalie, I’ll do it. like he did any dirty work known to man that was necessary for success of the Blackhawks at the expense maybe of the longevity of his career. So that’s why I’m so happy that he’s it’s like having a car and if you have one that is like going through like city traffic and wear and tear and you know you’re going to go through some rough roads and you might hit a pothole or two and that’s you know it’s going to be a beater car. That’s Jonathan Taves. You get out of it what you can. Exactly. Right. And then you got Patrick Kane. You know, he’s parked in the garage. He’s a convertible. Yes. I’m only going to bring him out for a few nice months when it doesn’t rain. Yeah. Exactly. You preserve the Patrick Kane vehicle. And you’re like, “This is going to last a long time. Look at the shiny uh exterior. Oh my gosh, those tires are in great shape. This is a 17-year-old car. How did you do that?” Well, we keep it out of the fray. Exactly. That’s Patrick Kane as a hockey player. When has he ever entered the fray? It’s totally true. And nobody is disrespecting that. No. No. He’s a classic star. No question. He doesn’t mix it up. No. And he still has that elite ability to find the crease and to score a goal and see something that few people see. So, that’s going to be fun. Yeah. It’s just really cool to be a hockey fan right now again in Chicago. We we kind of, you know, we think of them as a single entity because it was so often we miss Kane and Tes. Yeah, exactly. Kane and Tase. And I just wonder if they even have like a close friendship anymore or if they even That’s a really interesting question. I I’m just saying you never know. You know, they’re in they’re completely different individuals. One guy’s Canadian, one guy’s American. They’re from different parts of the world. Um I think they’re bonded by that connection. I think they’re bonded and those experiences. I don’t think they were ever maybe as close as people wanted them to be necessarily. There was never animosity. Just different personalities. Exactly. And I think that guys like you when I think back to that those teams you you know Patrick Kane was always uh talking about his friendship with Patrick Sharp and some other guys on that team. Taser certainly had a connection with him. But I’m guessing that like Michael and Scotty don’t talk as much as they once did. Well, that’s a different dynamic. I know. I just there seemed to be a jealousy element that I never really sensed with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Tate. But that’s an interesting cop because when you talk about dynamic duos in Chicago sports over the last 25 to 30 years, that’s the first one that comes to mind is Jordan Pippen. The next one is certainly Kanan Tace. Yeah, no doubt about it. And they have different relationships and dynamics, but Jordan and Pippen is one of those ones that you could study in sociology class or relationships class or something to look at like where did it fall apart, how did it last so long, and what fractured

  1. See the thing is though. The Sharks will never be good. How long are you going to farm picks before you put it together? I have never seen a 2-6 team hyped by the media so much. "Good vibes" only carry you so far. You eventually have to win.
