Hopefully paying the guy after fucking his knee celebrating in the WBC last time gives Sterns some leeway here.
BRB heading to Staples to get a new contract printed out in case I run into Diaz on the street.
…no trade clause? You’re twisting my arm here Edwin…..I mean physically c’mon the cops are coming.
While the Dodgers defer every contract. The Mets have to do the complete opposite. Mets have had several contracts that are top heavy with opt outs after the yearly value goes down. Sets the Mets up for failure and for them to be more likely to opt out
Just going purely off vibes and speculation here but Diaz seems like the kind of guy where he’d be cool with accepting a lesser role in the pen if he ends up losing effectiveness, which is a big deal because often times locking players into mid-to-long term contracts hurts roster flexibility.
Otherwise I’d be less excited about locking in Diaz for like 4-5 years.
The optics will look awful if both Diaz and Alonso are gone easily while we paid Soto the GDP of Nicaragua.
I just want to get everyone straight… we need to re-sign Diaz and Alonso and we will be good for the playoffs? Or you guys looking for more hiigh priced players on top of Diaz and Alonso’s new contracts.
I mean yea, we figured as such
Blank check for both him and Alonso. You have to sign them. We are not owned by the Wilpons anymore. Act like it.
Diaz basically said that he thinks the org treated him and his family well and that he wants to be back. Diaz opting out at age 31 after having a phenomenal year makes sense. The Mets giving him a QO if they can’t get a deal hammered out quickly makes sense. Edwin Diaz signing with the Mets on a 4-5 year deal that sacrifices a bit of AAV to add more years and therefore more total money makes sense. I’d be a bit surprised if he’s not back based on his own words, and the clear on-field fit with what the Mets need. Stearns talking about prioritizing run prevention and not re-signing one of the best closers in baseball would be a head scratcher.
Let him walk he’s a 31 year old reliever generally those contracts don’t age well.
Can’t argue with his numbers the past few years, but my blood pressure could honestly do without watching his Houdini act of loading the bases before pitching his way out of a jam every night.
He might not be as good on a winning team with a heavy workload. Either way, can’t say I blame him, and I’m excited that the Mets have to go out there now and find a couple cannons.
Opting out is just players betting on themselves for more money. I’m so tired of people thinking they rejected their current team
I would too. No one should be surprised. I’d be shocked if he isn’t resigned before free agency opens up

Who here thinks they’ll figure it out in the 5 day window again?
I think they’ll make it happen, but Stearns clearly has his limits here.
Dodgers probably offers Diaz a bag.
There’s a lot of people I want out. Diaz is not one of them.
He’s been solid
He’s already making the most out of all relievers. How much more does he want?
WTF???? Does he think he’s going to get NY money in some small market city.
As expected.
Get your bag, Sugar! Hopefully that’ll be in Queens.
LFGM
Mets brand is damaged after 2025 collapse. Dug a hole and must climb out. . .without Diaz.
If Stearns lets him walk to the Dodgers (I know they’re looking for a real closer) I’m 1000% out on him, I don’t give a fuck what he did for Milwaukee
If I’m Edwin I sign quickly before an accident happens and you get hurt after declining 38 million.
He’s going to the Dodgers or Phillies.
Im accepting the fact stearns wont give him the money he wants. The original contract he got would be something he would never have done
Welcome to the Cubs
Pay him
The World Series proved how much value there is in a strong closer. He will get paid.

Mets fans to Stearns
Blank check.
I guess the dodgers are in the market
Stanek will now be our closer.
