STEVE YZERMAN STRIKES GOLD AGAIN: RED WINGS PROSPECT MAX PLANTE IS A HUGE DRAFT STEAL

[Music] It’s not every day that we have the opportunity to talk about a prospect like this because yeah, teams that I cheer for generally have prospects that are worth talking about sometimes and we make videos and everybody gets excited. It’s always been different, you know, the landscape yearbyear because sometimes if the team is doing very well, maybe prospect talk isn’t really that hot of a topic that year because nobody’s focused on the future. Everybody’s focused on, hey, they’re actually doing well. I’m speaking to you Vancouver in 2023, 2024. In another year when the teams are doing poorly, the prospect talk goes off the rails because everybody loves talking about the future and getting hopeful for what could happen soon. The Detroit Red Wings, I feel like they could be in that territory where the former starts to become reality. They are one of the best teams in the Atlantic this year. Their players are playing like some of the best players in the world. But what if I told you that there happens to be literally the best NCAA prospect just chilling in the Detroit Red Wings system? Heck, not even the best NCAA prospect. How about the best NCAA player at 19 years old, mind you? Ladies and gentlemen, today we are taking our sights over to the University of Minnesota Duth Bulldogs and talking about Max Plant or Plant. I don’t know. He’s from Minnesota, so I’m going to assume it’s Plant. Anyways, Plant is not one of these guys whose name is going to be plastered all over Detroit Red Wings prospect charts and top player lists. He wasn’t a firstround guy. He wasn’t a top 10 guy. He’s no Axel Sandine Pelica Brans Nugard Danielson Casper or whatever. He’s not that. Instead, Max Plant is a 5’11, 176-lb center left-handed, drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2024 draft, 47th overall. And one of the things that’ll stand out to you right away when you look at his profile is, hey, the guy’s only 176. He’s only 5’11. He’s not big. Definitely not a big solid body, but he is listed on Elite Prospects as a cerebral tactician. a playmaker and a two-way forward. And if you head over to the scouting report on elite prospects, they said that back in 2024, Max Plant was one of the most skilled passers in the draft, especially off the back end. He feathers pucks through the tiniest of openings. Defensive pressure only empowers him. He takes advantage of asserting defending by ripping a pass right through it. He deceives enough to open lanes, but also knows when to make the quick pass for the counterattack. And the Elite Prospect Scouting Report guide gave Max Plant a 6.5 out of 10 in passing, 5.5 out of 10 in hockey sense, 5 out of 10 puck handling, 4 out of 10 shooting, and 4 and a half for skating and physical. He is among the draft’s best backhand passers combined with an industrious defensive game. Can you add more dynamism and physical skills? Well, back in 2024 when Plant was drafted by the Red Wings, he had scored over a point per game, 61 points and 51 for the NTDP. That’s not bad. Really not bad. I’d say it’s pretty good, actually. Maybe not Jack Hughes or Logan Culie NTDP level good, but still good. And as his career went on, Plant had himself a pretty solid freshman season with the Minnesota DUTH Bulldogs. 28 points, 23 games, and he had three points in six games at the World Juniors. But my golly gee, this guy this year has come out of the gates swinging because in 10 NCAA games this year, Max Plant is at nine goals and 10 assists for 19 total points. He is almost a double point per game player, getting roughly 19ish minutes a night. Look at these numbers. first game of the season against Alaska Fairbanks. He gets a twogoal night, three total points. He then gets another point the next night. Then up against Augustana University, two points in two games. Against Beamed State University, six points in two games. Against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, two goals in two games. And then against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks, Max Platt gets five points over the weekend, including a four-point night where he literally had a point on every single goal that was scored by his team. Max Plant is literally first in the NCAA in points and points per game. This guy is totally dummying the collegiate scene. And yes, he’s technically not first if you go look at some of the guys who only have like one game played so far, but like come on. He’s first in the NCAA in points. And this guy’s a Detroit Red Wings prospect. That’s crazy. There are posts on social media. Red Wings prospect posted this earlier in the week talking about Max Plant’s two goals and two assists against the North Dakota Fighting Sue. The crazy thing is he could have had a couple of more points. Great performance out of planned in his line. Controlled play when they were out there and produced in a hostile environment. This is of course the game where he had two goals and two assists. He also had this post making the rounds. This was on Detroit Hockey Now, but I found this from Despicable Ryan the Clankster who went out there and posted on Twitter that the Detroit Red Wings have a big problem with having not enough elite playmakers on the team. Well, there’s a 55% chance that Max Plant will be the answer to that problem. And linked is the watch the stats page for Max Plant, who says that he has a 28% chance of becoming a star NHL forward. He has an 85% chance of becoming an NHLer, period. 30% chance of being a fourthline guy, 27% chance of being maybe a middle six guy, and a 28% chance that he ends up having at least a season where he has.7 points per game for a forward. This guy is looking absolutely stellar and the Red Wings got him 47th overall. That’s ridiculous. You talk about all these names that fans have been talking about and hyping up. Hey, Emtt Finny, seventh round guy in the NHL right now. He’s looking pretty good. Maybe he hasn’t scored in a while, but he’s doing well. Baldikov in the KHL is doing very well as well. He’s a young guy. Came out of nowhere, later round pick, and now the Red Wings might have themselves something there. Okay, maybe that’s not fair to all of the actual later round picks. Spichonikov was another second rounder. But now the top guy in the NCAA period, no matter the age, no matter the draft year, whatever, the top guy in points in total is a Red Wings prospect. And he’s at almost two points a game. Who knows if he’s able to sustain that, if he ends up getting like, I don’t know, how many games do they play in the NCAA? 35, 40? If he gets 80 points, whatever. Like, okay, that’s really damn good. Thanks, Max Plant. Maybe you can be the next Adam Van Tilly, Jack Eel, or Paul Korea. But either way, the fact that this guy had himself a really reasonably good season last year and just absolutely exploded out of the gate this year really makes you wonder, man, what did this guy do in the summer to get this good? And how good is this going to be heading into the next few years? How much is this going to improve over the next few weeks? What’s the ceiling for this guy? I have no idea. Sure, the guy’s small, but he’s got crazy playmaking instincts. He’s got hockey sense through the roof, and he’s a defensively responsible center as well. Sign me up for a guy that Steve Eisermanman is probably patting himself on the back 10fold for selecting him in the draft 2 years ago. Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. How do you feel about Max Plant and the way he’s progressed in the NCAA? And if you’re a Detroit Red Wings fan, let me know what you think. the ceiling is for this guy. How far do you think he’s going to be able to go with his hockey playing talent? If you enjoyed this video, feel free to hit the like button. If you didn’t, the dislike button’s down there for you as well. Thoughts in the comments section below because those help out with the algorithm. I’d really appreciate it if you got involved down there. I hope you enjoyed this roll and bye. [Music] [Music]

  1. So I have to admit, I’ve all but forgotten about this guy with the talent that made it to Detroit this year and the handful knocking on the door that are in Grand Rapids. This is great to hear. Yzerman’s goal was to become a playoff team and challenge for cups, not a cup… which means what he does has to be sustainable. This is an example of what that looks like. It will enable Detroit to get better and better, and when the loss of players to other markets inevitably happened, this puts them in a position to “reload” and keep going.

  2. One day it'll be game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Offensive rush for the Wings and Ken Chat GPT Daniels can rattle off all of Plante's stastics, including his shoe size and favorite pizza topping ….while the puck is in play,

  3. When he was drafted he was thought of as being a boom or bust player. He will make it as a top 6 player or he won't make it. They'll take their time with him. He needs to spend time in the weight room

  4. Can he play LW for us? Seems like we have our top 3 centers for the future with Larkin Kasper Danielson, and he doesn’t fit the 4C mold, so would love to see him as a middle six playmaking winger in a couple of years.

  5. Max Plante has an 88% faceoff percentage #1 in the NCAA!!! He's been compared to Jack Hughes alot. I think Max Plante has #1 center potential and could have a higher ceiling than Jack Hughes especially in the faceoff department. Max Plante is averaging 2 points per game in a men's NCAA league. He is absolutely dominating, and should be a favorite for the Hobey Baker Award!

  6. Detroit Red Wings future 2031-2032 line-up post Dylan Larkin?:

    Finnie Kasper Raymond
    Bear Plante Genborg
    Buchelnikov Danielson MBN
    Lombardi Soderblom Kiiskinen
    Mazur

    Edvidsson Seider
    Buium ASP
    Johansson Johansson
    Wallinder

    Augustine
    Cossa

  7. A lot of people had been doubting the Yzerplan but they forgot what sort of a mess the Wings contract situation was in when he took over. This kid is very impressive along with Finnie, ASP, MBN and a slew of others. It is showing that this was taking time and now the results are slowing coming in. Look how GR is doing to start this year. Nothing but upside for the Wings moving forward.

  8. Saw Max, Jason & Xam play 2 weeks ago, he did not look small nor did he play small. You may remember his father, Derek Plante Buffalo Sabres & Dallas Stars.
