BREAKING NEWS: Seattle Seahawks Trade for WR/KR/PR Rashid Shaheed from the New Orleans Saints
All right, people. What is going on? Good morning. We’ve got some movement in the trade market for the Seattle Seahawks. We’ve got a trade. We’ve got a trade and it’s a fairly notable one, right? This is not uh this is not getting Roy Robertson Harris last year. This is beyond that by a pretty decent amount. This one should have a non-trivial impact on the 2025 Seahawks. They have traded with the New Orleans Saints to get wide receiver Rasheed Shahed. He’s been on our radar for a little while now. I think uh Seahawks fans have been certainly aware of him and there’s been a good amount of interest in acquiring him. Per sources, Pelisaro, Rap Sheet, Shfter, all the big names. He is now a Seattle Seahawk as the Saints start to blow things up a little bit. More on this trade after the break. All right, guys. Get to it and go have some fun with sports this year. All right, welcome back. So, Rasheed Shahed is now a Seahawk and there’s a few different things we got to talk about with regards to this trade. First is the compensation and I I’ll just go ahead and say it. It’s it’s quite a bit. It’s probably more than you would have expected. Per Rapaort, it is a fourthround pick and a fifth round pick to acquire Rasheed Shahed. Now, assuming these are native fourth and fifth round picks, they look like they’re going to be late in the fourth and late in the fifth. But if you combine the value of those two picks, you’re talking about a pretty decent fourth round pick in all likelihood. And that’s quite a bit for a player like this. And I think that if you look around the league and you look at some other trades that are happening for role player type guys like what the Patriots got for Don White and Kyle Dugar or Duggar, I don’t know how to pronounce that name. It it does seem like a little bit more than you would have thought you’d give up. So it it doesn’t feel like we just kind of yonked him away from New Orleans and gave up uh and gave up basically a almost a a a pittance for it. Like like sometimes you have these trades where it feels like the team just wants to get rid of the player and any asset they get back is just kind of a bonus. Like they don’t even really care that much. They just want to move on from the player. This trade is not that. This trade is multiple decent value day three picks. So if you want to be a little bit critical of what we had to give up to get them, that’s I think at the very least a reasonable position to have. So this was not some one-sided fleecing where we just take advantage of a team in a fire sale. We gave up something. Now, I think that one thing to consider here, well, one thing to consider of many, I think the main thing that you want to consider here, this upcoming draft doesn’t look like it’s going to be great. And I think that this trade kind of reflects that the Seahawks view it that way. They are not enamored with this upcoming draft class. There there are some positions where it’s good. There are also some positions where it’s kind of weak. And the Seahawks also probably feel like they don’t have a lot of holes right now and they can address those holes with their higher value picks, the the day one and the day two picks, which they currently still have all of those. So, they’re willing to give up a little bit extra with their day three picks and possibly even with their day two and I I don’t want to go this far, but but day one pick and try to get players that they know are good right now because they are less convinced they’re going to be able to get some really good players in the 2026 draft. So, that level makes sense, but it’s still quite a bit to give up. At the end of the day though, you you got to ask yourself this question. Would you rather the Seahawks give up a little bit more than you wanted to get a player that can help them win now, or would you rather have them just not done anything and hoped what they have was good enough? So, at the end of the day, I want to win championships, okay? What what are the draft picks really going to do for me? Okay, especially day three picks. We spent a fifth round pick last year on Riley Mills or earlier this year technically and he hasn’t even gotten on the field for us and who knows if he’ll ever do anything. Some players that we’ve spent fifth round type picks on in recent memory, guys like Olawatimi and Mike Morris who have done very little to help this team win. Like I’m not saying those picks are not valuable, but I think we also have to be real about the fact that you’re getting to the point in the draft where those are just complete lottery tickets. And if you can give up some lottery tickets for a known asset, you usually do. Monetarily, according to Curtis Allen, if there are no contract adjustments with the um with the um Rasheed Shahed deal, and we’ll talk about his contract in a second, the Seahawks take on about 2 million of salary, and that hits the cap about 1.2 million. So, the salary cap situation with the Seahawks has not appreciably changed. they are still very very flush with cash and have a lot of cash to roll over into 2020 uh6. So not much has changed there. So that’s one element here. We did give up some picks. We’re not taking on very much money at all. The money is almost insignificant. Now that that’s all out of the way, let’s talk about Rasheed Shahed, the player. So, he’s obviously not a household name in the NFL, but he is a very fast downfield threat wide receiver that also adds a lot as a special teamer. He’s 27 years old. He just turned 27 a couple of months ago, right before the season started. This is his fourth year in the league. He did actually make a Pro Bowl in 2023 and he was all pro first team, although that was as a special teamer. We’ll get to that in a second here, but he’s been moderately productive in his career. He actually had in 2023 over 700 yards receiving. I mean, other than JSN, nobody else on this team is currently on pace to have 700 plus receiving yards this season, right? So, he’s proven that he can be as productive as anybody else on this team. And unlike a lot of the guys we have on this team, like say a Cooper Cup, there’s um there’s upside here. I mean, last year he had 350 yards in six games before he got hurt. and look at his downfield threat ability. He’s a guy who’s averaging before this year and the Saints are playing offense in a very conservative way this year that is changing his game. You’re talking about over 15 yards per catch. So, this guy’s a big time down the field, send me on a nine route, send me on that go ball, I will go take the top off the defense type player. And really, the injuries are the main thing getting in his way. Like in 2024, he was on pace to have a thousand yard season and be one of the best big play threats in football, but he only lasted six games. And this year in the offense with Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shock playing ultra conservatively, like hit your back foot, get the ball out, no real opportunities to make big plays down the field almost ever. He’s at 500 yards. Like he’s on pace to come up near a thousand yards. So, this guy might be a little bit more of a well-rounded receiver than people are thinking right now. Like, this is a guy who could give you a complete season as a receiver. I think there’s a perception that he’s like a Marquez Valdez scantling where he’s just a guy that gives you downfield um big play threats and that’s it. There’s a little bit more going on here, I think, with this player. He might be a lot more than that. So I I I think that if you look at the upside of Shahed, if you look at the potential to advance beyond what he’s done so far in his career as a receiver, giving up a little bit more in terms of draft capital does kind of make sense. And again, his special teams value is pretty massive. He um was the best kick returner in football probably in 2023. And he was also a prolific punt returner. um he um excuse me, he he at various points in his career has done a little bit less of one thing or the other, but he’s been really good at both. So, we don’t really need a punt returner right now because Tory Horton’s doing good. But what if you look at Tory Horton and you go, we value him too much offensively. We don’t want to put him in harm’s way as a return guy. Then you have options. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Maybe you feel like you want Horton to do more stuff as a return man on punts, but you think he’s too valuable to your offense to put in harm’s way like that. So now you get Rasheed Shahed. So now Horton, you can kind of risk him on punt returns a little bit more and it’s it’s a little bit more manageable roster-wise and you know you’re getting somebody who’s very very good at it, not just somebody who can do it on paper. And the kick return stuff. Now, the last couple years, he hasn’t been doing as much in the kick return game, but he’s proven to be a very good kick returner in recent years, so it’s not like I don’t think he forgot how to do it. And remember, Dariq Young is going to be out a while. And Helani is fine, but he’s not exactly a big-time punt return guy or excuse me, kick return guy. So, I think getting Shahed to do kick return stuff is a good idea. And I think he adds something that Dariq Young was giving you, but now Dariq Young’s out. And I don’t know if Helani can add what Dariq Young was doing. So when you add in the special teams value, which is fairly significant, you insulate yourself against an injury to Horton. You give yourself another dimension to this team that can make big plays. And ultimately, you got to remember this is kind of an afterthought. You’re thinking about what he can give you offensively way before you’re thinking about special team stuff. And when when you look at the numbers here, you might be inclined to think, “Oh, this is just kind of a number four receiver who’s a big play threat.” Not not really. I don’t I think that’s the perception. I don’t think that’s reality. This is a guy who, like I said, if he was in a slightly more healthy offense with a real offensive line in New Orleans, he’d be well on pace for 1,000 yards. He can’t really play his game in New Orleans because they just hit their back foot and throw it in New Orleans right now. and they’re they’re correct to pursue an offense like that, but it’s cramping his style. And really, other than 2024, this guy hasn’t had big injury issues in his career overall. So, that’s overstated. Okay, so that’s Rasheed Shahed, the player. Now, the contract, again, we’re not inheriting very much money. I don’t really care about that. You’re talking about probably a couple million dollars. Not really significant. The thing here to note is that he is a free agent after this season and we have nine games left. I don’t think you’re trading a fourth and a fifth round pick for nine games plus postseason. So look for Rasheed Shahed to get extended. And I don’t know what that extension might look like. Again, when you take a look at his production in his career, it doesn’t look like he would get a ton of money. But when you actually parlay things out a little bit and you consider, hey, he was on track for about 1,000 yards in 2024, then he got hurt. He’s on track for about 1,000 yards this year in an offense that doesn’t really fit his style. You you might have a pretty sizable chunk of change coming his way. Now, coming off his 2023 season, which is currently the best season of his career, the Saints were able to get him for about 3 million a season. But I do think that especially if he closes this season out strong, which he’s got a decent chance of doing so. I mean, think about Rasheed Shahed running nine routes, catching deep shots from Sam Darnold, he could come into a little bit more money, but I do think there’s going to be a priority on resigning Shahed this off season because you’re not going to give up that kind of draft capital and then let the dude walk. So, look for him to get extended at some point in the next several months. And I don’t know what that contract might look like, but it’s going to be way less than the top guys is the important part. You’re not going to have a situation where you’re the Bengals paying massive money to Jamar Chase and T. Higgins. And if Shahed becomes your full-on number two receiver after Cooper Cup leaves, which could happen this offseason, more likely it happens the next offseason, you’re in a pretty good spot with receivers that I think you can feel pretty good about in this offense. So big picture though, what Rasheed Shahed really brings is a player that is going to make it very hard for opposing teams to stack the box. Right now, teams stack the box constantly against the Seahawks. And with Rasheed, Shahed, and Toe, it’s it’s going to be almost impossible for them to justify doing it. They they can do it when we’ve got JSN and Cup and Horton out there. I understand why they’re doing it, even if I think it’s a mistake. Now, they really can’t do it. When Rasheed’s out there, they’re going to be terrified of him hitting the deep ball. You stack the box, you’re basically giving us free shots downfield. and that’s worth more than maybe even his straightup numbers. All right, look for a better running game going forward. Rasheed Shahed, welcome to Seattle. Let’s hope it works out. I will see you guys soon. Go Hawks. And we’ll see if they do anything more in the next uh what do we got, two and a half hours. But welcome Rashid Shahed.

Rt guard needs support
Love it
I been said we need a wr. If jsn goes down were kinda screwed plus the other injuries and our run game sucks. This was a smart move
We got velus for kr/pr didnt we?
This was a good trade provided we sign him to a new reasonable extension. If he walks after this season, then this trade sucked. Looks like he's an ERFA so there really should not be any reason why this guy is not our WR2-3 for the next 3 years.
I think the defensive pieces the hawks wanted were to expensive with how good the defense already is. If the offense can score more it takes pressure off the defense is what I think their thought process is
Great move, not concerned about the day 3 pick compensation. Betting on a proven talent is always the better option. Plus, he stretches the field by a mile and can take this offense to a new height.
not the trade I wanted but hope he works out
Knows the offense and can take the top off the defense
God I hate the sleeper ad. Have to stop working, take my gloves off and rush to skip.
But if it doesn’t work out, we get a compensatory fourth round pick back so in essence if we don’t keep him, we only lose the fifth round pick
It’s crazy that we are already in the win now mindset. It took Pete 3 seasons to get that Super Bowl roster. Can Mike do it in two??
sweet!
Huge pickup!!!
Young and Bobo at risk. I think young might be a little safer due to him doing some returns but since we have Horton and now Shaheed it’s gonna be hard for them to see the field.
I hope they use Shaheed as a punt/kick returner, dude is electric. Reminds me of the Harvin trade only worse picks 😁
so we fr sticking with anthony bradford….?
This is 100% going to help out our run game too, defenses are going to be forced to play with a lighter box
Good trade! 👍
We have almost fully rebuilt this entire roster. We used almost every pick last year on offense. Adding one more receiver(hopefully long term)and with the youth of our other WRs and TE room, we can primarily focus on the trenches with our top 3 picks. If another Zabel falls to us next year it’s wraps
A great choice….huge depth. Look out.
Good pick up. As long as they can resign him to a fair deal, and use other draft picks to improve our weakness at RG/C. He can definitely help the hawks and is a great compliment to JSN. Plus the special teams play as well.
Good luck stacking the box against Seattle…
Oh let's not forget you have the best WR coach and leader in the NFL awaiting his arrival in Kupp…
Wouldn’t have been my first choice for guard, but…
This reminds me of when we signed Percy Harvin
I dont think someone on a trash ass organization like the saints total yards for the year is 500 receiving yards. To put into perspective this is more than Dk Metcalf not too far behind jaden waddles. Put him on a red hot seahawks team with sam darnold at the helm i dont think its a significant as you think to give up a 4th and 5th rounder to add some wr depth as someone as talented as shaeed now he has a good team to elevate his talent. I think this was a steal man.
