LIVE: Pelicans vs. Hornets Postgame Interviews 11/4/2025
I think let’s start with with the rookie first uh before I get Jose. Um just just talk about DQ and just the the job that he was able to do and then despite the turnovers like being able to make two huge plays u at the end in the final minute. Yeah, DQ was um he was amazing tonight. Uh we needed every ounce of what he gave us. Um even when he made that mistake, if you watched his teammates, they all crowded around him and they just told him, “Hey, okay, next play. We made a mistake, turnover, next play.” But he he he had done so much for us even leading to that point um in the minutes that he played, rebounding, his ability to pass the ball, uh and he can score. Uh so huge huge uh minutes from from DQ and then Jose uh kind of just just being Jose. Jose being Jose um big shot. Um you know those guys they stuck together they played together. Uh they continued to have faith in each other. We’ve been we’ve been working and um it was just it was good to carve out this win much needed win on our home floor. With DQ out there seemed like there was a lot of players just forwarding him in terms of cutting and handoffs. a lot of movement, a lot of player and ball movement. How much of that was just then just read and react and playing basketball versus how much of that is like specifically the kind of um usage that you want with with Queen out there? It’s more of the usage that we want with him out there. He’s he’s a hub so we can pass the ball to him um at the elbow or we can go to him in the post and guys can play off of him and then when he doesn’t like anything he’ll just take it uh and attack the basket from there. Well, we could talk about a lot of players tonight, but what about the minutes that you got from Carlo and Sadique? Those Carlo changed the game coming in in in the first half. I think first quarter, his ability to run the floor, block shots, um, you know, put backs, you know, just just 50-50 plays. Uh, but him and Sadique were great. Sadique hit some big shots in the second half. Just solid solid effort collectively by our group. How important was it just to get this first win? I talked to Trey the other day and he mentioned that he felt like one shot got one and he was hoping could snowball. What? It’s so important. You know, the win solidifies all the work that they put in all everything that we’re teaching. You know, sometimes it can be difficult when we know that our processes are there. We’re teaching the right things. Guys are working at it and they don’t get the results. Um, so this confirms what they’re doing, how hard we’re working, and uh the beauty in the NBA is you turn around, you got another one tomorrow. What do you think about just the crowd tonight? They were great. They were great. It’s always fun to play here at home, play in front of our home crowd. Um, we talked about it a little bit, Rod. Just the frustration, some of the disappointment. We all feel it. And we just wanted to put forth our best effort, and I’m extremely proud of this group. Um they they carved out a a hard fought win tonight. Coach, uh going back on that, you know, you just talked about the frustration and everything like that. Um in that last answer, talked about the first one, you talked about the team, how it felt for them, but how did it feel for you, you know, um to to really kind of get that first win of the series? Uh it felt I’m I’m a part of it. So, uh when those guys win, we all win. And you know, I’m extremely uh proud of that group. Uh it felt great. you know, it’s just it’s kind of getting the monkey off your back, so to speak. And um you know, hopefully we can build on this momentum. It feels like, you know, every time Jos is making the right play, he’s encouraging others. He has relentless effort. I mean, we see it, you probably see it way more in practice and whatnot. To see him get a moment like that in this game, what does it mean to you to see like all his hard work get even more rewarded with with, you know, a huge moment to help you all secure your first win? Yeah, Jose’s he’s always a guy that plays with a chip on his shoulder. He’s done that since he’s gotten here. Um he knows that nothing is given to him. He has to earn every opportunity and he’s done that. And every time he touches the floor, he tries to give you everything he has. And tonight, I believe he played like 20 straight minutes. And you know, yes, the big shot, but he made so many plays for us on both ends of the floor. And that led his energy was right. He was an emotional leader for our group. Obviously having some guys out. Uh he he’s a he’s just he’s all heart. He plays with his heart and I think that’s why um people resonate with him. Seen Herb kind of take some of the young players aside and just, you know, speak with him. Uh how do you feel like he’s been vocally at practice? Do you feel like he’s growing to be more comfortable calling guys up, you know, like asking more of them to, you know, meet the moment? He is. He is. He definitely is. Herb, you know, he’s he’s he has a quiet um spirit about him, but he’s growing more confident in using his voice, and when he talks, every everyone in the gym listens. Circling back to DQ, could could you just address his fourth quarter in the context of the perceived risk that Joe took in trading back in to get him and some of the criticism he’s gotten for it? I mean, that that’s um for us that’s like behind us. We we’ve all moved forward with, you know, our group and um you guys saw what he’s capable of doing on the floor tonight. Um, look, we we moving forward with our group. We love the guys that we have. We’re going to continue to coach them, uh, continue to try to build momentum, carve out wins. DQ is a part of that, and all these guys are talented, and they’re here for a reason, and I’m grateful that I get a chance to coach, um, high character, hardworking young men. Coach, what went into the decision to start uh, JP again tonight? Um, having C out, having Zion out, you know, just filling that role of, uh, you know, putting some points on the board for us. Okay. Thank you.
