What is Trending: Utah Jazz Prevail in Boston | BYU Tops Villanova | Arizona Cardinals Roll Dalla…
It’s time to get your morning started with the news you need to know. News of the day. This is what’s trending with DJ and PK. # Utah Jazz. 5 seconds on the clock. Brown has it. Deonte slips. Brown does two. Loses the ball. Clayton has it. Lobs it up to Mark and who taps it up and in. Jazz lead at 103 102. There’s a wet spot on the floor right there that both of them slipped on cuz Kada had fallen earlier in the play. Keonte veers to the right, accelerates to the basket, spins back, baseline. Jay too hard. Rebound Nerkage back up. Yes, with 6 seconds left. Yousef Nerkage puts the buddy down with 6 seconds to play and the Jazz lead in Boston 105 103. [Music] The Utah Jazz get a road win seemingly out of nowhere. PK terrible performances in Phoenix and Charlotte. They could not score in the first half. But turns out if you defend and you don’t give up 120 or 130 points, you give yourself a chance. Yeah, the Celtics aren’t any good though, are they? They really aren’t. They really aren’t. But you know what? I don’t think Charlotte’s any good and I don’t think the Suns are any good and they embarrass the Jazz. So, you got to start by beating the bad teams and then beat some mediocre teams. And this version of the Celtics, given all the people they’re missing, somewhere between bad and mediocre. Yeah, he’s very good. I’m not I’m not so focused on the uh the results here. I’m looking for progression. Uh guys who can play guys that they can count on that will not you know when I say what I really will Hardy and his coaching staff that they’re looking for. Uh if uh Nerkage didn’t miss the shot at the end. I mean what it did changed everything. Not for me. I’m looking for building blocks and George continues to be one. He does continue to be one. I thought that when they kind of melted down there late in the game, I thought the ball really should have been in his hands and there was some confusion about rolls and there’s three guys drifting around midcourt and that leads to too much traffic and too many guys able to take a step and take a swipe and pop the ball out like just give it to him and get out of the way. He’s the guy right now and largely things were going pretty well when he had the ball. So, I thought that was weird that they contributed to all the uh Well, they had a little meltdown there for a couple minutes, but they rided the chip and won the game. Just get the ball to him and get out of the way. And I can’t speak to any individual play. I didn’t see the game. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Because Well, we’ll get to that game. We’ll get to that game coming up. So, the Jazz get a win. Now, they move on to Detroit for a game tomorrow. DJ and PK #NBA Alpie crossover dribble. Left hand against Graford. Turn, spins, floater, five-footer. That’s the best move that Alpie’s had all night long. Went one-on-one against Daniel Gaffford. He went left, spun right, hit the eight-footer. Rockets up by 105. 102 score. 5 seconds remaining. Norm there. Double team there. He forces up a three. It’s off. Davon has it. And this one belongs to the Heat. Norm, welcome back. And good night LA. He beat the Clippers 120- 119. Hear the end of that one right there. The Blazers cannot handle the Lakers. DeAndre Aton’s 29 points, 10 rebounds, powering the Lakers to a win. Surprised by how well it’s going for the Lakers given uh who they’re missing early here in the season. And I’d have to look at each of their team uh uh their opponents. Uh you know, Austin Reeves carried them a little bit. Dons is a good player. I I don’t have the schedule in front of me to see who they played. Uh you know, it’s going to be a test over the long term, not a test over a couple of weeks. They’re off to a six-2 start with a win over a uh That’s nice. a Blazer team. Yeah. The Denver Nuggets are off to a 4-2 start. They beat the Sacramento Kings. The Joker had 24-4 in a 131-24 win. Memphis star John Morant mum on his feelings about return to action after suspended by the team over the weekend for conduct detrimental to the team. Uh he had 18 points, 10 assists, and a 114 106 loss to Detroit, who the Jazz will be playing soon. And I’m done with him. It feels like a trade is coming, but who’s going to take him? Now, I’ve said that before, and there seems to always be a taker. and guys I think can’t be traded get traded. So I assume he’s going to get traded, although I have no idea who would take him. Seems like there’s some Yeah, he goes back several years there with his father in the Delta Center and the Jazz trying to get into what’s the what’s the trying to mllify him and limit any PR damage. Yeah. And it just the truth really never came out completely in that thing. Maybe a little provocation. But with all his uh issues off the court and the fact he’s a uh smaller guy and has to have the ball and I don’t see how that’s going to work out, but hey, there’s a team maybe the Jazz can crawl over on their way back to the playoffs at some point. He’s a gunner. He is a gunner. That’s an old school word, but yeah, he’s a gunner. I didn’t mean it in that way. No, you meant it in the basketball sense or you meant it in the uh trouble off the court sense. It’s all all of the above. No, all of it. DJPK [Music] #col basketball. I just thought down the stretch, you know, we put the ball in his hands, he he made plays. So, in his his first game to be able to have the poise to do that, I thought was impressive. He finally got his butt in there and got some offensive rebounds, too, which I was happy to see. But what I just told the guys is to be able to pull out a tough win like that in the first game of the year. That’s just a toughness stuff we can build on. You know, AJ in included in that. BYU with a late run beats Villanovavva 7166. They held Villanova to two points over about a fiveminute run there late in the game. Uh Villanova got a couple some free throws and a few points there at the end. It didn’t really matter, but they were they were stuck on I think it was 59 there for a long time. And AJ Debansa to the rim PK Philadelphia wasn’t that big and they didn’t really defend the paint with numbers. So easiest thing to do is go get a layup, go get something inside of three feet and he did it a couple times for big hoops down the stretch. Yeah, it was interesting and that’s the game I was at. So that’s why I didn’t get an opportunity to watch the Jazz or any of the NBA is that to see them, you know, things were going smoothly and then things hit a rough patch a little bit and Villanova was not only able to come back and I mean they were really behind big time, you know, 10 to 12 uh most of the game and then they make their run, they take the lead and then you saw Wright and Debonsa just say, “Well, we’re going to I’m going one-on-one. I’m just taking it right to the basket.” And sometimes those short shots dropped. other times they didn’t. But what was cool to me and I asked Kevin Young about this in the post game is that I really felt that the intensity once the lead had evaporated there in the last six, seven minutes, 5 minutes particular that they really turned it up and really guarded hard. They played a lot harder. They played harder with the game on the line. And obviously this is a work in progress as every team is going to be in the world of college basketball today when most teams have so many newcomers to try to integrate them. If you look back about last year, you know, Cougars clearly didn’t hit their stride until mid January, right? So that that’s still uh two months away if we go along that line to figure out who they are, what they have, who’s playing what role. So, you have to allow them some time, but I love the way they turned up the intensity. And then I also thought it’s good. Why have a 25point beatd down against a team that, you know, had in name is a bigname program? Obviously, they’ve slipped a little bit when Jay Wright retired, but still to be able to do what the Cougars did is something that there’s no question that is a great building block for them going forward. you know how hard they played with the game online. I don’t know how it felt to you in the arena because you got more familiarity with this situation and this guy, but on the broadcast they were going nuts over Kicada and I felt like well yeah he’s making plays and all that but we’ve watched him for two years one at Utah and one at BYU largely who he is and it’s largely what he does. I felt maybe maybe is more a case of them discovering it or maybe we underappreciated it to a certain degree. Uh, what do you think of his impact on the game? Because they were I think that with this team and what they’re going to need him to do, I think you can see him flourish. You know, I don’t know that he’s a big- time player, but what he’s going to be able to do is clean up stuff because with Wright and Donsa and even Saunders took it to the hole a little bit more that you have to help. And then he can be that dude who has a ton of athletic ability around the basket that can go in and dunk. And he had the great sequence where he had the big dunk and then he blocked it into the fourth row uh back to back. probably the two best plays offensive def defensively consecutive that he may ever have. So I expect him to flourish at a higher level this season because of the slashers that they have on the team. And he’s always been a defensive force. That that’s a fact. You know, he he has a phenomenal body. He’s put himself in great shape and he knows his role. So he’s looking to be a defensive presence and that’s what they can do there. and then he’s got enough of a game offensively to be able to do some stuff around the basket. Uh because you just have to account for these other guys. So yeah, I think he’ll play a vital role and continue to be effective in that role. 7166 the Cougars open the season with the victory in Las Vegas and the uh there were a few other Big 12 scores out there. The uh Utes open with a win at home over San Jose State 8475. Uh I don’t know if any of the other scores caught your eye. You probably got a little bit of that Arizona game I would guess. Yeah, there’s a kid coat. He’s a Phoenix kid from knowing about him for years. He’s a big man. He’ll go high in the draft next year. And he was awesome. Absolutely awesome. No doubt about it. Kid, I know the Devils wanted him bad. They thought they had him, but in the end they just don’t have the desire to be that good in basketball. Well, in Arizona, it’s everything to them. You know, they play before sellouts every night. This is this is their link to the big time. So, uh why not go there where you can be big man on campus, literally and physically or metaphorically, I should say. And so, there he is doing his thing. And he’s a kid to watch. K O A P E A T. And so, I’ve known about him for several years. 30 points, seven boards for him. As far as in a league that’s uh usually really good and really deep, you know, any signs of weakness on the first night, TCU lost to New Orleans at home 7874, Colorado by six over Montana State at home 8478. Now, maybe one of these teams is loaded and we just don’t know it yet in the air with all this transfers and that, but couple scores that caught my eye for teams struggling in the Big 12 out of the gate. Um, but hey, Houston, BYU, Arizona, the top of the league is going to be really good and we’ll see how many teams go with those three. Tonight, SU is at Arizona State and UVU is going to host West Coast Baptist. So, college hoops every night. Now, uh, Weber State beat West Coast Baptist 130 to 38. You ever hear of West Coast Baptist before, PK? Where’s West Coast Baptist? It’s right there next to the water. Okay. A 92point win for Weaver State. All right. Uh DJPK #NFL. Brassette takes the snap, play fake, looks over the middle, throws wide open Harrison caught for a touchdown. What a first half for Jacobe Brassette and Marvin Harrison Jr. They’ve made it look easy on that drive and on that touchdown pass. Nine nothing Cardinals. Waiting for the shotgun snap on first and goal from the 11. Has the ball. Three-step drop. Looks right, throws right in the end zone. Caught for a touchdown by Trey McBride. Jacobe Brassette again on time on target. And the Cardinals extend their lead to 23-7. Cardinals go into Dallas and win with a backup quarterback 2717. to Dallas with a fourth quarter touchdown to make that a little more competitive. Jacobe Brassette 261 yards passing, two touchdowns. Arizona coach Jonathan Ganon says Kyler Murray will remain the starting quarterback when he returns. He’s been out with a foot injury and Jacobe Brassette leading them to a road win. But the Cardinals three and five, the Cowboys three five- one. Two teams that don’t really look like they’re going much anywhere right now. No, they don’t. Commander coach Dan Quinn taking the blame for leaving star quarterback Jaden Daniels in the game Sunday. He was injured during garbage time, dislocated left elbow, his status to be determined, but looks like he’s going to be out for uh quite a while. And the Commanders are three and six, so they look like they may not be going anywhere this year. Three and six. And their starting quarterback is is down. Yeah, they got to the to the conference final last year as a rookie. Now, fortunately for him that it is his non-throwing elbow and all that stuff and arms. So, you’d think that, you know, it wouldn’t be longlasting in terms of maybe lingering into next year and all that stuff. Uh, so that that’s the one good thing about this. The NFL talks about player safety. Frankie Louvu is feeling it. The Washington Commanders linebacker has been suspended for an accumulation of hip drop tackles. Had another one this Sunday. previously been fined twice. So now he gets suspended. You you tackle and you fall across somebody leg somebody’s legs and we’ve seen a lot of broken legs and broken ankles over that. So that tackle is uh not to be done anymore and he’s done it three times so he gets a suspension. Frankie Frankie Frankie DJ and PK [Music] # college football. Yeah, they’re doing great. I mean we’ll see how they progress during practice this week. So they’re not out. They’re practicing and we’ll see by the time Wednesday. Hopefully it works in our favor. But the fact that they’re not out is a good sign. That’s Khani Sitakei on running back LJ Martin and linebacker Jack Kelly. They have been practicing. What is their availability for the Texas Tech game? To be determined. Big game. Two big-time players the Cougars would obviously love to have. But PK, I guess we’ll uh wait for injury reports and probably for kickoff. Yeah, I think it’s uh more than love. I think it’s need. I think it’s a requirement. You want to win this game and this game just uh what you’re looking for to accomplish is just gigantic. If they win this game, boy, their chances, you know, they do that predictability thing. I think it’s got to shoot up into 90% to get to Arlington. And we’re uh just about a month away now. It sits at 94 and change in terms of percentage if they win this game. Is that what it is? Yeah. I don’t know that I necessarily believe it. I believe it in the moment, but it doesn’t uh reflect how it could be the next game or whatever. Uh but yeah, that that would that would just be gig gigantic, you know. Texas Tech I think Texas Tech is still the marquee team. Uh I and I realize they lost one game, but whoopde-doo, those things happen. You know, Alabama lost one game, but we forget about it. We’ve been told to forget about it. Thou shalt forget. Yeah. So, I still look at uh Tech as the marquee. They got the They just got a commitment from the number one quarterback in a class of 27. They’re clearly throwing all sorts of money at people. They’re playing by these new rules and they’re playing it to the highest level. I mean, Kyle Woodingham said that a few weeks back. Look who has the biggest budget. It’s Texas Tech, right? And they’re in the state that’s football crazy. They’re not traditionally the highest of the top of the food chain, but with the money that they have right now, they are very close to it. And so, beating them in their stadium would be a marquee game. I mean, it would if you ever had any doubt about BYU and how good they are, that game ought to seal it because if they can get this, and I have no idea if they can, then they’re double- digit underdog, but if they can get this game, not only does it mean, hey, you are a beast, but I can extrapolate and say you’ve got a chance to win some playoff games. You’ve got a chance to win playoff games, you’ve got a chance to host a playoff game. Uh, you would think it’s all good. Also, if they win this game and if they beat Cincinnati here uh coming up in the stretch run, then that opens the door for another one of those uh two loss pileups and multi-team tiebreers. There’s four teams sitting on two losses. That’d be two more, six. I mean, I don’t think he’d finish with a 16 tie, but it would probably end up being a multi-team tiebreaker and some bizarness to try to figure out who BYU would be playing in that conference title game that they have a 94% chance of getting to if they beat Texas Tech. I’ll tell you this right now. Yes. Right now. Right now, I’ll tell you this. Listen. I’ll tell I’ll tell you what. If they host a playoff game, I’ll go. Oh, that. All right. All right. PK and a kid. I’ll pick you up. We can go together. Oh, carpool. DJ and PK. # Major League Baseball. I talked to a good friend and friend of mine yesterday on the plane and he gave me the okay to use this phrase, Pat Riley. What’s better than two? Three. Free. Free. Let’s go. That’s Dodger manager Dave Roberts at the Championship Parade. The Dodgers celebrating back-to-back World Series titles. Very short list of teams that have been able to repeat in Major League Baseball history. And the Dodgers will try to join that list next year. Baseball Fame Contemporary Committee. The Contemporary Era Committee has eight players on the ballot. Dale Murphy, Jeff Kent, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Maddingley, Carlos Delgada, Gary Sheffield, and Fernando Valenuela. Each candidate needs 75% of the votes to get into the poll from a 16p person committee that will meet on December 7th at the Major League Baseball winter meetings in Orlando, Florida. No fools there. No winter meetings in Detroit. We’re going to I was thinking man Minneapolis, you know, there. Let’s do it. Uh, you know, Dale Murphy obviously is a local guy. Uh, and I’d been on the fence with him. I said I would I would not consider him until Fred McGriff got in because I thought Fred Mcgriff I didn’t understand what took so long to get Fred McGriff in but Fred McGriff is in now and so Dale Murphy as I view him he’s on the fence right but if you just look at the numbers he’s on the fence but to me I think you got to go beyond numbers now some guys have numbers and so it’s an automatic Clayton Kershaw 3,000 strikeouts I get all that Ichiro last uh uh summer. I mean, his stats were, you know, there’s no question he belonged in. He’s got the numbers. I look at Dale Murphy in uh an error that he played, which would be basically the 80s. And he was one of the dominant players repeatedly for for a good 10 years, and he got hurt a little bit early in his 30s and it really tailed off and then boom, you blink, he’s out of the game. So, he doesn’t have necessarily the big-time career numbers, but I think he’s got during a time a significant period of time. It wasn’t a flash in the pan. So, it’s a long way of saying put them in. What to do with the players who have an MVP, a Sai Young award, maybe a couple of them, but they didn’t go the 15 years to get the numbers you need. you know, they don’t have 15 years of elite ball, but they got one or two great years and maybe six or seven very good years. And I think you see a lot of players on this list, well, some of the players on the list, obviously, Bonds and Clemens, you got to say, okay, uh, you know, what are you going to do with guys from the steroid era? But Maddingley Murphy and Fernando Valenuela, I mean, at their peak, they were really good, but they don’t get the numbers that you get when you’re 30, whatever it is, uh, 38-year-old, you know, fill in the blank. I’ve been at the top of my game, 15 years guy. I would put those guys in all of them. The the three I just said, well, to me, Bonds and Clemens, put them in and the story is what it is. I mean, they we we’re going to penalize these guys when everybody was looking the other way. And and I think with those two, of all the steroid era guys, those are the two I can most easily get behind because they were tracking as Hall of Famers before the steroid era started and what what they did. Yeah, I think I think they were already there. For someone who was completely in the steroid air, it gets a little harder to mark. But we got this stretch of six, eight, 10 years, whatever it is, and like you’re a Hall of Famer. Everybody, everybody in the ballpark knew it. I went in the ballpark with Roger. You just can’t ignore the entire time because uh it’s a black eye. Yeah. And then there was no big-time legislation against it. So, I I’d put those guys in. And as far as Murphy, there’s been I mean, go to Sandy Kofax. He didn’t have a a long career care career because of an injury issue, but they say he was as dominant as anybody who ever pitched. If you talk to people who were alive at that time and can and were able to watch him do his thing. So go let’s have these guys in DJPK # NHL. I think we just got to play a little bit more simple. Play off the goal line. Obviously not give too many oddman chances. Play off their goal line and um you know get to the net. Kyler Yamamoto on how the Mammoth get back into the win. Colin, they have started off eight and three here, but they lost the last couple of games. They start a road trip in Buffalo tonight. And of course, they had the trade with the Sabres. They got JJ Purka. They sent Michael Kessler and Josh Don there. So, you got three guys facing their former teams and tend to play a little harder. And we’ll see if one of those three turns up turns out to be a hero tonight. Puck drop is set for 5:00. Coverage on the zone begins at 4 o’clock. The Buffalo Sabres off to a bad start. Really uh struggling over there in the uh East in last in last place. Even though they actually have a winning record, that Atlantic division seems pretty tough, but the Sabres can’t seem to uh catch a break. Oh man, I never knew that when Gordon told me, “Don’t let them break down the Atlantic division, it would actually be the NHL.” What is trending is brought to you by Shamrock Plumbing.
