Steelers News: Omar Khan STANDS PAT On Trade Deadline Day + Why That Is NOT The End Of The World
[Music] Despite a lot of rumors and reports that the Pittsburgh Steelers were making calls looking to add an offensive weapon before the NFL trade deadline today, the deadline has passed and the con artist did not strike on trade deadline day today. And today on Steelers Talk, I’m going to be breaking down my biggest disappointment and specifically why the Steelers did not get a wide receiver to add to this offense heading into the second half of the season. But also later in today’s show, I’m going to tell you why it’s not the end of the world that they didn’t get a wide receiver today and why I still have a lot of hope and optimism for this Steelers team heading into the second half of this 2025 campaign. Now, before we get into uh the rest of the content today, guys, make sure you guys click that thumbs up icon if you haven’t already. If you bleed black and gold, if you are behind this team 100% no matter how this season ends. Uh I know I will be if you guys are with me on that. Support the channel and support the team today by clicking that thumbs up icon. Now there was multiple reports today that the Pittsburgh Steelers were close to landing Jacobe Meyers in a trade uh from the Las Vegas Raiders. Now they got outbid by the Jacksonville Jaguars who ended up giving the Raiders a fourth and a sixth round pick. a decent hall for the Raiders here getting two draft picks that when combined uh you know in terms of the trade chart is is worth around a late third round draft pick. So, you know, for I think the Raiders I think they did a good job there. They sold him to the highest bidder. And for me, guys, I think what it ended up being was that Omar was willing to give up that fourth round pick for Jacobe Meyers and they were right there uh in the mix. And then, you know, the Raiders as they were kind of going back and forth with these different offers, the Jags were willing to give up that second pick, that sixth round pick along with the fourth. And the Steelers, who are really being precious with their draft picks this year, didn’t want to give up two different draft picks in a trade. And they didn’t want to give up a third round pick for Jacobe Meyers either. Uh, which is probably what led to them getting outbid in this particular negotiation. And, you know, for me, you know, if I if I were Omar Khan, I would have pwned up. I mean, I would have you got 12 draft picks next year, man. I think, you know, if you trade two of them to get a really good player in Jacobe Myers to help you try and win a Super Bowl this year. Um, I would have traded a fourth and a fifth to get Jacobe Myers. And, you know, that’s what the Seahawks ended up paying for Rasheed Shahed today. And I actually think that the Jaguars got a better deal. Uh, you know, Shahed, in my opinion, is not worth a fourth and a fifth. And, you know, I think that Jacobe um, you know, is a better player than Rasheed Shahed is. So for the Jags to get him for that price tag, it felt like this was very doable for the Pittsburgh Steelers. And it would have been really nice to add Jacobe Myers’s skill set as a big body route running, you know, a receiver with excellent hands. You know, doesn’t drop anything. You know, he’s got a great contested catchy. I think he would have been a really great complimentary piece inside this Steelers offense. And, you know, I am a little bit bummed that the Steelers came up just short in those negotiations. Uh then when they didn’t get Meyers, apparently Omar Khan was on the phone being very aggressive, calling a bunch of different teams today, seeing what was available. And you know, I think that they had a certain list of players that they were interested in. And you know, they had their price tag that they were willing to pay for those players. And you know, there was some reports about them being in on Jaylen Wadd, but the price tag was just way too high apparently uh to to make that deal happen. Calvin Ridley potentially. But, you know, it really seemed like all these teams that were selling at the deadline were really standing pat with uh with with, you know, the values that they thought that those players were worth. And it just didn’t align with what the Pittsburgh Steelers wanted. And to me, it was pretty clear that the Pittsburgh Steelers weren’t going to get desperate to make a move at receiver, frankly, like they did last year, uh, when they traded for Mike Williams, a fifth round pick. And, you know, we all know how that worked out. And that ended up being a really bad move. Uh but you know, I guess we’ll have to see if this wide receiver room moving forward is going to be able to get the job done. Now, Mike Tomlin said at his press conference today, uh kind of his reasoning and kind of explained, you know, the reason a big reason why the Steelers didn’t feel desperate to go and make a move for a wide receiver today. And essentially, it’s because they view their tight ends as receivers as well. This is what Tomlin had to say earlier today in the south side of Pittsburgh. We don’t look at our eligibles as wide receivers. We really feel good about our tight end group as eligibles as well. And you can’t talk about the passing game without the contributions that we get from that group. But we’re comfortable with the way that we’re distributing the ball and our utilization of people and the divisional labor uh labor to this point. And to Tomlin’s point here, there are a number of players that have had roles in the passing game for the Pittsburgh Steelers this year. DK Metaf is obviously that number one presence that is consistently uh you know getting the most looks and all that different stuff at the receiver position, but then you got Calvin Austin the third as a smaller, shiftier, speedier uh type of wide receiver than Janu Smith they’ve been using as kind of like a bigger wide receiver. I I can’t say that I’ve been too enthused with what we’ve seen from John Smith to this point, but obviously the Steelers really like him, especially Arthur Smith. And then Pat Fmouth is kind of your traditional tight end that can, you know, sit down in the soft spots and zones. you know, he’s had a couple pretty big games uh this year. And then Darnell Washington has had a couple big games this year as well. They are getting him involved in the passing game quite a bit. They certainly live in a lot of these multiple tight end looks. And then when you kind of look at it from this perspective, you know, Roman Wilson is kind of like the sixth man down the totem pole here in terms of their receiving weapons and only two receivers are in their top five pass catchers right now in terms of who’s getting the most looks in this offense. So, this is really an offense that is really based out of multiple tight ends and really only two receivers are are quote unquote starters in this offense. So, it didn’t seem like the Steelers were willing and, you know, too eager to move off of that strategy. And even though I think they would have liked to add a added a complimentary skill set to this group for the right price, that correct price never uh presented itself today. So, the Steelers decided to stand pat. And also, I think we have to remember here that Pittsburgh is being pretty precious with their draft picks in the 2026 NFL draft. I mean, we’ve seen, you know, the signs of this for many, many weeks now, even dating back to the offseason. I mean, they let uh the comp pick eligible free agents this year, guys like Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Naji Harris, and more hit free agency. Uh, and now they’re going to be getting comp picks for those uh players leaving in free agency. And then uh their free agency strategy as a whole revolved around stacking those comp picks. Not only just letting those players leave in free agency, but also not signing players that would have affected the comp pick formula. They also traded a talented receiver George Pickkins for an extra third round pick. They refused to include 2026 draft picks uh in the trade for Jaylen Ramsay and John Smith. And right now as a whole, you know, you know, the result of that is you have 12 draft picks in the 2026 NFL draft. And I just don’t think, you know, especially with the Steelers who like their offensive personnel right now, I didn’t think that they were too eager uh to give up, especially multiple draft picks in a trade to get a receiver, especially a receiver that’s just on a one-year contract. And contrary to popular belief, this is kind of a popular narrative surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the Steelers are not quote unquote allin this season. Now, you can argue that they should be because they’ve got Cam Hayward who is going to be retiring within the next two years. Aaron Rogers the same way. So, you have to take advantage of your opportunities while they’re while they’re here. I understand that a lot of people have that take. But that’s not exactly the way the Steelers are approaching this. The Steelers approach is yes, we are trying to win this year with this current group and we feel like this group that we have assembled is good enough to accomplish that goal, but we’re not going to uh but we’re also going to build for the future and we’re also going to plan for the future specifically when it comes to the 2026 NFL draft and gear up to really inject this roster with a lot of young young talent. Uh especially, you know, you’re going to be having a bunch of picks in the first four rounds of the NFL draft next year if you’re if you’re the Pittsburgh Steelers. If they were allin guys, they would have made some other moves that would have been more in the in the direction of getting rid of picks instead of trying to add picks and then protect these picks. So even though the Steelers are trying to win a Super Bowl this year, there’s no question about that. They are also planning for the future. So I don’t think it’s accurate to say that the Steelers are quote unquote allin this season. So, coming up here on Steelers Talk, my biggest concern with not getting a wide receiver. Um, I think that there’s one really big concern that I have that is a 100% uh reasonable concern to have if you are a Steelers fan uh after not getting a receiver in today before the trade deadline today. But before we get into the rest of today’s show, guys, let’s have a word from our sponsor at Prize Pick. And the hard-hitting football action this football season is just getting started. And it gets even better when you download the Prize Pick app today. The weather might be changing, but the feeling of being right never gets old. So, keep the season rolling on on prize picks by getting $50 instantly in lineups when you play your first $5. Prize picks is super simple to play. Just pick more than or less than on two to six player stat projections. If you get your picks right, you could cash in on prize picks. How you play is up to you. If you want flexibility, choose the flex play where you can get paid even if one of your picks misses. And if you want the biggest payouts, go for the power play. No matter how you play though, prize picks is a great way to put your takes to the test. Join the millions of users that have already signed up for America’s number one fantasy sports app. And this weekend, of course, the Steelers take on the Chargers on Sunday Night Football. I’m taking the more on passing yards for Aaron Rogers and the more on Jaylen Warren rushing yards. I’m going to take the less on passing yards for Justin Herbert. So download the Prize Pix app today and use code CLNS to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. That’s code CLNS to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. Prize picks. It’s good to be right. Now, my biggest concern with not getting, you know, a quote unquote legit wide receiver 2 like Jacobe Meyers today, guys, is that if DK Metaf goes down as your number one receiving option, there really isn’t a reliable guy to step up into that wide receiver one role. I mean, Calvin Austin III, I think, can be a serviceable number two, but if asked to be a number one guy, I don’t think he can step into that role. Roman Wilson is same way. You know, Marquez Valdez Scantling would obviously be put into probably the starting rotation if DK goes down. But like if he goes down, you got MVS, Calvin, and Roman as your three receivers. I I’m not too enthused with that wide receiver trio as the season continues on. And um you know, there’s a lot of this season on offense is riding on that number one receiver staying healthy. kind of similar to last season where George Pickkins, you know, this team and this offense and especially this passing game really relied on GP to stay healthy and then he injures that hamstring and then he’s out for a number of games in which the Steelers offense looks terrible and then even when he comes back, he’s not the same player. So, if a similar thing happens to DK Metaf in this season, it could derail this season once again for the Pittsburgh Steelers. And that would partly be on GM Omar Khan for not, you know, adding a wide receiver capable of taking on that number one receiver moniker in the event of a DK Metaf injury. But with that said, I do think that some of the meltdowns that I’ve been seeing on Steelers Twitter today from fans is a bit overblown. And I still have a lot of hope and a lot of optimism and a lot of positive feelings surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers as a whole. And and a lot of positive feelings about the offense. I mean, this offense, man, it’s top half of the league in scoring offense right now of scoring 25.3 points per game. You know, they’re doing a really good job in the red zone. They’re top 10 in that regard. They’re top uh three in the league in giveaways. Uh they’re tied for second right now at just seven giveaways on the season, so they’re protecting the football. You they’re 13th in EPA per play. Um you know, they’re doing a good job in a lot of these different areas. And you know, since week four, since they started using the jumbo personnel packages, it’s been even better. So, the run game has been working pretty well. Well, I think they’re a top five rushing offense in the league since they went to those jumbo personnel packages uh back in week four and Aaron Rogers has been very efficient and you know, it’s not the best offense in the world, but this team was always going to be dependent on whether or not the defense could step up and they really did step up last week. I mean, that looked like the Steelers defense we were expecting to see this season against the Indianapolis Colts where they absolutely took them to the woodshed uh on Sunday. guys up front in the secondary. It was a complete effort defensively and even though the Steelers offense didn’t play their best football game, they were still able to uh pretty much lock down that game midway through the fourth quarter against the number one seed in the AFC. So, you know, if you can get this offense working together and not have as many drops or mental mistakes as we had last Sunday and you put it together where this offense is working really efficiently and this defense is playing the way that it did against a really good offense last week in the Colts, like this Steelers team as is, uh, barring an injury to DK Metaf, I think, is capable of being beating any team in the National Football League today. And they proved that last Sunday. And honestly guys, if you compare this year’s trade deadline hall compared to last year’s trade deadline hall where they traded for Mike Williams and Preston Smith, this year they bring in Kyle Duggar last week and then they bring in MVS as kind of that trade deadline wide receiver edition here before the deadline passes. And you know I think that you know Kyle Duggar and uh MVS are going to be very good additions for this football team. Okay, MVS, I like him as an addition because he’s got uh uh you know that chemistry with Aaron Rogers. He still has that speed. He has that vertical presence where he was on he was on pace to put up over 800 yards of offense last year um in the eight games he played with the New Orleans Saints. So, he Rogers still clearly believes that he can play and uh you know, as a designated deep threat who’s a big body guy, he’s played in Shanahan systems before, like Rogers knows how to use him. Uh, I’m I’m excited to see what MVS is going to be able to do here in Pittsburgh and then Kyle Duggar as kind of a bigger safety that they’ve injected into this now two high safety uh kind of base defense. Uh, I think it’s going to be a great fit. It was a great fit for when we played Indianapolis last week. I think it’s going to continue to be a great fit on that side of the football. Uh, and you compare that to last year where fans were largely pleased with what they did at the trade deadline, trading for Preston Smith and Mike Williams, and neither of those things worked out. And you gave up two draft picks uh, in the 2025 NFL draft to get those players on your team. I think this year, you know, the two the trade that you made with just a pick swap. So, you just downgraded one of your picks. You didn’t actually give up a pick to get Kyle uh, to get Kyle Duggar and then you get MVS for free on the free agency market. Um, I think that that is a much better uh, you know, plan from Omar Khan this year. Would I have loved to add another receiver? Absolutely. But if you’re asking me to pick between last year’s trade deadline hall and this year’s trade deadline hall, I’m taking Kyle Duggar and MVS over Mike Williams and Preston Smith any day of the week. All right, so grade this year’s deadline hall for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I’m including Marquez Valdez Scantling even though they didn’t have to trade for him. He was their wide receiver edition before the deadline. So, Kyle Duggar, Marquez Valdez, Scantling, grade this year’s deadline hall, A, B, C, D, or F. Uh, for me personally, guys, I’m going to give that probably a B. Uh, you know, it’s not an A because you didn’t get, you know, an impact player necessarily as like a wide receiver 2/wide receiver 1B. Uh, that would have made it an A to me. If you would have got Jacobe Myers, that would have been A+. Okay. Uh, but Marquez Valdis Scaning, I think, is going to be able to get on the active roster. He’s going to be a contributor to this team. if somebody gets injured, at least you’re not completely, you know, bereft of talent, uh, and players that can play with Aaron Rodgers. And I think Kyle Duggar is going to be one of the missing pieces to get this defense to play the way that we all expected them to play this season. So, that’ll be it for today’s show, guys. And if you are rocking with the Pittsburgh Steelers all season long, just like we are here on Steelers Talk, type those real ones down there in the comments section if you made it to the end of today’s show. DK goes down and we have MVS, Calvin and Roman, LOL 😂.
#OmartheFRAUDartist.
We didn’t get anybody…. Whoopty doooo , go Steelers if we beat the chargers I’m going all in for the year
Lot of you mfers don't understand scheme. Meyers would've made ZERO difference other than wasting assets. Arthur Smith doesn't feature WR2 in his system ever. Keep the picks, trade up in the draft IN PITTSBURGH and get your QB of the future.
F….when we get in playoffs vs big boys on obvious passing situations we don't have the weapons….got 12 damn picks use a 4th and 5th to get Meyers
Time will tell..
Folks, running game is pretty poor.
They dumped Najee because big payday, few ypc and no breakaway threat but he was a good bull if not a Bettis. They didn't replace him and it shows.
Still could've used extra DB.
i meant few extra yds per catch. His yards per carry was decent if not special, and he had a real good attitude.
Didn’t need one dum ass
Keep running it up the middle for 2 on first and second down, no wr needed for it
C
MVS hands are inconsistent just like DK hands. Steelers need a sure hand receiver not another one that's going to drop routine catches. I'm pissed Steelers didn't try harder to get a legit #2.
REAL ONE
I’m not sure y ppl keep saying this year “the Steelers r all in” when they themselves kept saying they were planning for next year…several times thru media n their actions. They r sticking to Steeler’s fundamentals; improving the defense n planning on drafting well to home brew talent. THIS YEAR, all they did was do things to lock in improvements to the Arthur Smith system. Expand the TE room, improve the OL n make the run game a prominent threat.
NOTHING screamed they were going all in. The media just kept HOPING their moves symbolized that. They do not n have not operated like that the entire time
Hate tomlin and staff. Overpaid and results suck
Pittsburgh’s front office gets a solid F- in trade deadline. Twelve picks, and you do nothing with them is laughable!
You could have gotten two perennial skill position players for 4-5 picks. Maybe less. Terrible. You have 3 losses due to lack of depth at WR and the defensive secondary, you cannot rely solely on TE’s 24/7. Pitiful decision making, Aaron Rodgers last year is this…?
Nan if the Steelers fail to get to the playoffs or don't get out the first round fire tomlin and chan
They should of never traded gp
It was smart not to give up the draft picks, you have to take into account a few things 1. The average age of our players we have a veteran team. 2. Where are you predicting you will draft most likely 15th-25th. With a high first round and an older roster having 12 picks damn near guarantees you’re likely to get a hand full of young talent that can be trained up by some of the older talent on the roster. We should not continue grabbing 30+ year old players they won’t help long term.
The Steelers are officially a poor franchise: No risk no vision just managing mediocracy…
I don't know what thex wait for they never get a decent QB pick and cant develop them anyway. By the time their players like TJ are too old anyway. So now you have Rodgers and can try a SB run but instead you do nothing.
Speedy 6'4" MVS across from DK is pretty cheap deal. Season is basically half over. Aaron knows MVS. They will click on day one. Calvin austin is your Randall Cobb, but faster. Plus all 3 of your TE would be #1 on any other team. There's no need to add any more weapons this late in the season. MvS is exception due to chemistry with ARod. I wish Aaron had these weapons in Greenbay. Maybe the play caller needs to tweek a bit for Aaron Rodgers. I miss the highlight reels when ARod was in GB. Pitts, let create some new highlight reels for Arod in your city. Remember, he took your superrbowl ring back then. But he is here now to return it back to you. Lets go Pitt!!!!
You look dumb.
We just beat the hottest team in NFL and DK was not a big part of that.
This is NOT last season! Rodgers throws and uses a ton of other players.
Im happy. Once we get as healthy as we need to be lookout.
I love my team but the leadership doesn't know what they are doing. A great WR pair would've made a BIG difference and opened up the running game. But we chose to not make a move. Didn't we get torched by Cincinnati and their WR pair and an old QB. We have not learned much. Hmm…makes you wonder about the Kahn artist BS. This was not a smart move!! So we have decided to wait for the draft.
Roman is a talented WR who can and will contribute. remember he is really a rookie and one mistake doesn't make him not worth playing. keep feeding him the ball, esp. deep passes.
go Curtin!!!
B
I hope they lose every damn game! I hope DK gets hurt! We need the GM the Eagles got!!
More Roman more Connor less Jonnu, we’re fine!
they have to use dk better and more
Omar will not over pay for talent look at his track record if steelers dont win the deal he wont take a deal
Real one
FIRE OMAR KAHN RIGHT NOW!!!
Steelers not doing anything for the draft deadline just shows that we are not in it. We are going to be another bust this year. If DK goes down, we are screwed not that he is making a difference anyway, but to not do anything makes no sense. We maybe screwed going forward and if we lose to the chargers, the downfall will begin there………to be cont……
B
we won't win a Superbowl this year, we just won't. keep the picks
wtf….. there was multiple rumors of at least 1 trade for WR !!!!!
The issue is they haven’t really been hitting on their recent picks
I think people are forgetting that if you’re gonna trade for Meyers then you probably gotta pay him. On the Steelers’ end, what’s the point of giving up a 3rd or 4th rounder if you probably won’t pay him next year
It’s every year with the same bs
I don't get it, who cares about a 4th and a 6th rounder and paying Jacobi Myers $18-20 million APY on a new contract? He makes your offense so much better and insures the position this year and next.
I bet the Steelers +500 to win the afc north after week 3 – so if that means I bleed black and gold count me in!
I don’t understand this theory of holding onto these late draft picks and not making a trade. The Steelers can’t draft pass like the fourth round, they’re so arrogant to hold onto these picks acting like they actually have the ability to find late round talent
Tomlin’s comment is proof of why he needs to go.
We have scored a total of what 4 touchdowns with our tight end’s. Nearly every top team individual receiver’s have more TD’s.
I am sick of this offense not putting points on the board.
How they got out bid when we had everything they needed we have 12 picks 12 let that sink in
Steeler fans are pissed we see what we thought it’s been all SMOKE & MIRRORS! If I’m DK I’m take my foot off the gas
