DETROIT’S SECRET WEAPON: WHY THE RED WINGS COULD GET EVEN BETTER
[Music] So, here’s the thing. The Detroit Red Wings had themselves a pretty rough night yesterday because they played off against one of the best teams in the National Hockey League that of course it’s not themselves. They are one of the best teams in the league, but they played off against yet another one of these great teams and they ended up losing. one- nothing loss to the Vegas Golden Knights. But ultimately, this loss isn’t anything to hang your hat on and get all mopey about because admittedly, the Red Wings played hard. They were in the fight. They were putting in some good effort. And look, on most nights when John Gibson goes out there and stops 33 of 34 total shots, you’re probably going to get yourselves a win. That’s usually what happens, I feel, when it comes to goalender performance in the National Hockey League. It’s just unfortunate that Acura Schmid was on the other side and he was able to get the shut out, of course. But all Red Wings losses to the Vegas Golden Knights aside, I wanted to go over a talking point that was brought up on the R Detroit Red Wings subreddit that I thought was super interesting and one that really goes out there and just kind of indicates how things could be getting even better for this Detroit Red Wings team in a way that I don’t think anybody necessarily really expected, but when you put it out like this, it actually makes sense a little bit. So, Red Wings ended up losing. They’re going out there and still chugging along. They’re coming back over to Detroit. Kane’s probably going to come back at some point. It’s going to be fine, right? But Gray the Dork 12 went out there and posted this on the R Red Wings subreddit saying it’s crazy that the Detroit Red Wings are 9 and5. It’s 9 and5 now ever since the Vegas loss, but I digress. The Red Wings are 9 and5 and pretty much every advanced stat still says they’re underperforming. Positive goals against above expected. Negative goals scored above expected. 31st in the NHL for 5v5 PDO. I think the shooting percentage stuff will continue to rise a bit. Raymond back to full strength. De Brinket heating up. Kane dishing better passes to Casper and De Brinket. No Appleton slander intended. Plus to Larkin on the power play. The save percentage might stay pretty similar though. Gibson can lock in a bit and I think he will, but ultimately our defensive structure isn’t very kind to goalie stats in my opinion. We limit a lot of the scoring chances, especially the weak ones, but we still have lapses that create high danger chances against the lack of volume and shots against will keep safe percentages down, even if the goalenders are playing fine. And that is a really interesting way to think about the Detroit Red Wings as a team so far because generally speaking, when you talk about PDO, you talk about these numbers that generally indicate team performance, hey, the Detroit Red Wings are not really looking all too great when you look at the raw hard analytics about it. Being 31st in the NHL for PDO is insane. PDIO essentially is the luck calculation in hockey where you add up a team’s shooting percentage and you also add up the save percentage and essentially you get a metric that debates whether or not a team is actually doing well because they’re good or because they’re shooting a lot of pucks that go in and the goalenders are making a lot of saves. It’s not something that you want to have a high value at. But when it comes to the Detroit Red Wings, hey, they are one of the best teams in the NHL. Yet, they are still near gosh darn last in 5v5 PDO. Generally speaking, the rule is at the beginning parts of the year, you’ll have these teams settled in with their shot percentages and their save percentages. That’s how it goes. But as the year goes on, usually teams tend to flatten out a little bit. teams that are near the bottom of the NHL and PDO, they tend to start getting a little bit luckier as the year goes on because you can’t be at the league bottom when it comes to save percentage and shooting percentage forever. right now. The poster here on Reddit made an interesting comment saying that yeah, the fact that Detroit has a system that allows high danger chances against at low volume might actually keep the save percentage numbers for these Red Wings goalies kind of low because the Wings are very good at suffocating chances, but they do have mistakes that allow high danger chances to come in. and high danger chances generally go in. That’s why they’re high danger. So, if the Red Wings are suppressing all of the non-dangerous chances, but they only allow the few dangerous ones to come in, then you will get some games where maybe the Red Wings goenders led in a whole bunch of goals on so few shots because the Wings might have made a really flawless effort up until that point only to make a mistake and then all of a sudden the other team scores a really nice back door tap in. It’s a very interesting way to view this team, but essentially if we assume normal NHL rules apply to how the Red Wings are going to continue performing, it does paint a better picture as to what this team is capable of. And I think even with yesterday’s game, we saw that even if the team loses in regulation, you can still be happy and you can still find ways to express contentment with what happens. Like, hey, they played hard. You’re not going to win every game. Sometimes you play well. Sometimes you do a good job, but you just can’t score. Like, that’s what happened essentially. Acura Schmid was perfect yesterday. John Gibson led in one goal. Thanks, Ivan Barbashev. That’s it. Like, the Red Wings are pretty good. Pretty pretty good. And I’d say one of the best parts about covering the Wings this season and just being in this bubble, watching them do their thing is I feel like for a lot of Wings fans, it’s so much more redeeming to have this be the norm after so many years after Red Wings hockey fell off. when Dylan Larkin was a rookie and he played in the playoffs in his first year and never saw a sniff of playoff hockey after that. Like the other teams I cover, Montreal, Vancouver, they’ve had their playoff runs. They’ve had success even in the playoffs, winning a few rounds here and there. And I feel like a lot of those teams fan bases, they’re in different spots, but the Red Wings, it’s all on the up and up. Montreal, you can say they’re on the up and up, but they were already on a further up place because they made the playoffs last year. And everybody’s all excited because Hudson won the Calder and Demi Dov is in the conversation again too. Red Wings fans, it’s like, “Oh, wow. Now there are actually tangible results that we can look at and actually be excited for.” And all the young guys making an impact on the team. It just feeds in to what could happen this year. Not saying the Red Wings are guaranteed to make in the playoffs, but you look at it, they’re already one of the top teams in the NHL right now despite being league worst in PDO. That shooting percentage is going to go up, baby. And once everybody starts to get healthy and once Kane comes back. Oh, baby. Sign me up for the Detroit bandwagon. Am I even a bandwagoner? I don’t know. I’ve been making videos about this team for a few years now. It’s been over half a decade talking about the Detroit Red Wings and their prospects and what’s going on with the team. So, no, I’m going to say it. I’m not a bandwagoner. I was making videos talking about Lucas Raymond getting drafted fourth overall and the cider draft reaction is one of my favorites. Seems to be some of yours, too. But either way, these guys are here. The wings are doing well and seems like they could be doing even more well as the weeks go on. Is that even correct grammar? I don’t know. Thoughts in the comment section below either way about the Detroit Red Wings and what they have shown off this season so far. I hope you enjoyed this video 999 and bye. [Music] [Music]

Tough loss last night 1-0 to Vegas, but overall Red wings look stacked and will be for years to come.
Getting three wins from five games on a road trip is good, yes i would of like to get one more win but they won what i hoping they would. i think one of those loses came form playing the night before, i am pleased with this road trip.
I’m an Yzerman Defender, I think he’s doing a fantastic job. People forget the #1 prospect was Zadina when Yzerman took over, and he was terrible
Agree with the overall premise. The Wings are winning without playing their best hockey and without much "luck". Vegas doesn't give you much. They block a lot of shots and now with Marner they obviously can generate more offense. We see the hole he left at Toronto.
Our secondary scoring is going to have to step up. Need more offense.
Thx for the video…and…bye!
The nuanced and intelligent assessment from a random redditor is amazing. Love that.
Im happy with the trip. Except for our PP. It suffers without Kane. And i didn't like how we kept the same lineup in the second of back to backs.
It showed that the wings are not to be taken lightly. They can beat you in a variety of ways. And they can also beat you with sheer will. Yesterday's game also showed that they can compete with any team in the league. However they are missing a few pieces. If we didn't have to wait so daggone long for our shooting prospects to come up we could wait. But I think Danielson and Alex tuck would be great additions.
You’re absolutely NOT a bandwagon fan!!! Your coverage has been awesome over the years 👍👍
I want to remind everybody we are still paying Justin ab $1 million dollars for someone who hasn’t played on our team since 2022. We are technically still in the teardown and we are already seeing results. The yeserplan lives
