Brodie’s Breakdown at SEA (11/5)
Brody Brazil here to recap. Game 14 on the season and a really enjoyable 6-1 Sharks win over Seattle. Yeah, scoring six is fun and impressive, but it’s actually the other number that means so much for San Jose right now because that’s now two or fewer goals allowed in regulation by the Sharks in four straight games. They’re still scoring goals and now they’re learning to defend so much better. Let’s get into the breakdown. And if we’re really going to set the scene for you here, of course it was raining on this Wednesday night in Seattle. But the Sharks perfectly warm and dry in this like tanning bed style entrance to the rink and they wasted no time getting hot and getting going in this game. We’re 68 ticks into this evening when a turnover gets created by Clingberg there on the half wall. Puck took a perfect direction towards Defoley and Uncle Tyler always knows where Mlin is ready in the slot. That catch and release is like no other in the league right now. It’s Celebry’s eighth goal on the season and a really nice trend for the Sharks. The eighth time in 14 games this year where they have scored first. And honestly, as we look at all the areas of growth and improvement for this team starting to show scoring first is definitely a key indicator. It’s one- nothing Sharks. And you know what? The away game stats at this point for Mlin are worth sharing. 13 road points, that’s the most in the NHL. 13 points in a team’s first six road games. That’s second most by a teenager in NHL history. Sydney Crosby is the only one who had more. But oh yeah, Mack is about to break that later on in this game. And the 13 points in a team’s first six road games, the most by any Shark at any age ever. Wow. Yeah, that was Max’s first point of the night. He would end up having two more. But let’s get back to this. Centerman Ryan Winterton would tie this game at one with his very first NHL goal at 16:30 of the first period, but that led to quick redemption and a really good Sharks response at both ends of the ice. The San Jose turnover here in their own end leads to a tremendous look for Tai Cartier right out front. What an unbelievable pad save by Yaruslav. If there’s such thing as a statement save, this was it. And it leads to offense. Not long after the Sharks entering their ozone and it’s Skinner to Wenberg who goes cross slot to Ethan Cardwell for the onet. That’s the second career goal for Cards. The first of this season for the young forward. Both scored against the Seattle Kraken. And it’s certainly another young player right here in 56 that we’d love to see more of this season and have more success this season at the NHL level. So now we’re 2-1. Sharks with the lead midway through the second period. San Jose jumps on a power play which had not been a bright spot for the team lately. Oh for their last dozen on the man advantage, but of course that was about to change. Don’t mind that broken twig you’ll eventually see just sitting there in the slot. Mlin running the flank position with the cross ice pass to Smitty. He goes up top where John Clingberg is about to net his second of the season. And you knew things were due to come around and come together like this. So through two periods, the Sharks leading in goals three to one on the scoreboard and leading in shots 17 to 15. And things only got significantly better in the third period. Like a lot better and very quickly. The Sharks strike with another early goal and then some more. Just 62 seconds in, Ferraro sends a bouncer across the middle of the ice. It gets to Will Smith. He fires off the wrist with Celibbrane as a screen out front. And whether it touched Mac or not kind of doesn’t really matter. We’ll call this Smmedy’s fifth goal on the season and a Shark score that gave them their first real cushion of the game. And also Mlin’s third point of the night. Sharks up 4-1. And then how about this hustle play. The Sharks here short-handed. One of their PK performers coming through. Colin Graph with that takeaway and the skateway. He’s up the ice on a one-on-one. And even though he can’t bury the first shot, he does get the rebound. He does get it to Ty Dandria who does score. Deliy’s first shorty on the career puts the Sharks up 5 to one. And this next goal isn’t short-handed, but it was kind of PK influenced. That’s because when Shakir Mukmadulan wins the puck, he’s going to throw it all the way up the ice to where Tyler Tofoley had just exited the penalty box. And in this situation, 73 does not miss. That right there is a touchdown. That is a 6-1 Sharks lead. This game blown wide open for good. Yeah, I don’t know if happy. Yeah, maybe I’m happy. You complain about that? Um, no. There’s obviously things we as a coach, you just keep pushing the team and we want to get better in areas, but for sure our penalty kill took a big step in the right direction. We score in the power play. Special teams, you can win you hockey games. We saw that tonight. Our goalending’s been a lot better here recently. Uh, we’re starting to find guys in roles. You know, when me goes down, we play 11 and seven. Unexpected, but we just kept going and we just kept playing. And, uh, it is what it is. And that I think the mindset of our team uh has really grown here lately and that’s been the biggest positive. I mean I’m a player that coaches has always told me to to shoot the puck is more uh big part of my game too though I think is finding sticks and and opportunities around the net. But over the last few years I think I’ve been shooting more um in the power play and I think you create a lot from that. Uh, and today obviously good puck movement and me stepping into one-timers, uh, is probably something that we could work on a little bit more, I think. Um, I mean, I think that was my second one in the power play this year. So, I mean, that should be an option, but then you just want to let Smitty and and Mack also uh, play their game and do what they’re really good at and finding each other. So, um, just try to feed those guys as well. I mean, I I thought we did a great job um getting on them, not letting them have much time and space, especially as the game went on. But I mean, I think uh it’s kind of one of those nights for them as well. Like we had a night here last year, we lost 6-1 and it was kind of the same thing. We just nothing was going. So I think that happens sometimes with I mean it’s a 82 game season. A lot can go wrong and um I mean they they’ve been playing really well. So, I think it was just um a mixture of how well we played and um maybe a little bit of that. The biggest thing is for me is not getting too high and not getting too low, you know. Um it’s a long year. It’s a busy year. A lot of ups and downs individually as a team. So, that’s what I’m trying to focus on. Just stay even killed. So, um I didn’t really answer your question, but yeah, team’s team’s going good. I feel like I’m I’m I’m being responsible and and uh doing playing my role, doing a job. So, a great night overall for the Sharks in which they were actually down a few regulars, including William Ecklund and Michael Misa, who was a late scratch up front. So, they actually went with 11 forwards and 7D for the head coach Ryan Worovski. And they still came out with this very impressive road win. It was a quick road trip. Now, it’s back to San Jose for the next two. But honestly, if you’re counting in the bigger picture here, it’s like nine straight really good efforts by the Sharks. Sometimes they get the results, sometimes they don’t. But tonight, they did maybe their most decisive of the season, a 6-1 win over the Kraken.
