Russell Westbrook is the Greatest Rebounding Guard Ever! | Locked On Kings
Tonight inside the Golden One Center, Russell Westbrook took us on a trip back in time to 2017, the year he won MVP in the NBA and averaged a triple double. Russ gets his first trip dub as a king against the Dubs on the same night where he became the best rebounding guard in NBA history. We’ll talk about it all right here on Locked on Kings. You are Locked on Kings, your daily Sacramento Kings podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is that time. Time for another episode of Locked on Kings. Hello and welcome into Locked on Kings, your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all season long. Today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new customers can bet just $5. And if your bet wins, you’ll get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. Head to FanDuel.com to get started. My name is Matt George. I have the privilege of being your host here. I’m a Sacramento sports anchor and reporter for ABC 10 News. The Kings begin their fivegame home stand with a victory, albeit in a game against the Golden State Warriors where neither of these teams were even remotely close to full strength. No Demandis Sabonis and no Zack Lavine in addition of course the no Keegan Murray tonight for the Kings. No Steph Curry, no uh Jimmy Butler, no Draymond Green for the Golden State Warriors. But still a hard-fought battle that the Sacramento Kings came out victorious in 121 to 116 the final score. All thanks to King Westbrook. Now he wasn’t alone. In fact, he wasn’t even the Kings leading scoreer. That goes to Demar D. Roza. We’ll talk about D. Rosen’s good game. Uh, great return for Malik Monk back with the team after missing a couple of games with personal reasons. The Kings rookies Nick Clifford and Maxim Reno gave some of their best minutes so far as a pro. But there’s only one way we start when talking about this game. It’s of course with Russell Westbrook and his triple double. 23 points, nine of 13 from the field. So, not only did he get the triple double, he did so efficiently. Three of four from three-point range, 16 rebounds for Russell Westbrook and 10 assists. Russ started in the power forward spot tonight for the Kings. Dennis Shruder playing and holding down the point guard uh spot. Then you had Demar De Rozan and Neique Clifford sharing the two3 responsibilities. Drew Eubanks uh rounded out the starting five as the starting center even though Precious Aua uh made his Kings debut tonight. Only played a handful of minutes. Had some good moments. Didn’t get the opportunity to start like maybe we expected when we heard Demis Sabonis was not going to be playing earlier this afternoon. But Russell Best Westbrook in so many ways put the Kings on his back energywise. And I mean, there’s so much good that he did offensively, so much that jumps off a stat sheet when you’re looking at a box score, right? But there were two moments in particular where I thought this is like the Russell Westbrook impact that the Sacramento Kings brought Russ to Sacramento 4. This is why Scott Perry went out and got Russ. The way he played, how he stepped up in these moments, and the passion and energy and fire that he played with in these moments is something that Scott and Doug want to become infectious for this entire locker room. Want it to become the standard for how all of these players play. Two moments in the fourth quarter where Russell Westbrook didn’t get a steal. It doesn’t show up as a steal or anything in the box score, but he forced two big turnovers on Pajki that resulted in stops needed when the Warriors were trying to make a couple of late runs in that fourth quarter to potentially steal this game away from the Kings. Russ had a moment where he stripped the ball away from uh Pods, who was trying to score in the fast break, attacking the basket, then resulted in after the ball was loose, Pods pushing Russ. So, it ended up being a foul on Pods. Kings got the ball. Russ turns, high-fives a fan on the baseline, starts yelling, screaming, doing his thing. And then a few minutes later, uh the the Warriors again making another push. Somehow found a way to cut a Kings double-digit lead all the way down to just a one score, one possession game late. And Pods is attacking or gets the ball off of a pass from I think Moses Moody gave him the ball and Russell Westbrook gets his hand on it, knocks the ball off of Pod’s knee. Ball goes out of bounds. That was essentially the game-winning play for the Kings, securing the victory there at the very end. Two plays that don’t count as steals for Russ, but two plays where he created turnovers, took away opportunities for the Warriors, and we had the reaction afterwards of him high-fiving fans and flexing and roaring and letting the crowd hear it. playing with that passion in his 18th season in the league like he played when he was an MVP or he was competing against the Golden State Warriors years ago in the Western Conference Finals to try and win a ring. That’s how Russ plays every single time he steps on the floor. And again, I tell you that is why the Sacramento Kings brought him in and brought him to be a part of uh this this organization. The energy he brings is just simply undeniable. It’s undeniable. It’s infectious. And if this Golden One center crowd already didn’t love Russell Westbrook, they certainly do after tonight. 16 rebounds for Russ in a game where we know the Kings reboundwise have been struggling all season. And here they are once again missing their best rebounder and the best rebounder in the league in Demand Sabonis. Russell Westbrook comes in 16 rebounds in this game, allowing the Kings to actually outrebound the Warriors 47- 44 in this contest. And with those 16 rebounds, Russell Westbrook passed Jason Kidd on the all-time rebounding list for guards. Russ is now number one in NBA history as a guard in total rebounds. And funny enough, he didn’t know that until after the game was over in his postgame press conference. I was going to play it for you here on the podcast, but it doesn’t really translate well for audio listeners. So, I encourage you to go to my Twitter account, Matt George Sack. Uh, and you can watch it there. He talks about he says, “Humbly I’m I I think I’m the best rebounding guard of all time.” He said that before he knew that he passed Jason Kid. Then he was informed he passed Jason Kidd and you could see on his face like, “What?” Then he he turns to the Kings PR staff and goes, “I gotta get that game ball. Somebody get me that game ball.” So go and and check that out on my uh Twitter account. It’s a pretty fun video there. Um but what I will play for you is a sad actually from Doug Christie talking about Russell Westbrook. Now I want to make sure I don’t set this s up with any kind of negative context and this is not meant to be a like a negative reaction to to Doug Christie as a coach because Malik Monk who spoke with the media first after this game was over. One of the things Malik said was that he thinks that Russ has brought a really good energy to the starting lineup that this team has been missing for the last couple years. He said he feels like the team has not gotten off to the best starts energy-wise and Russ has come in and helped that. So Tristy Rodriguez of NBC Sports uh asked Doug if he would consider keeping Russ in the starting lineup even when the Kings get healthy and their their starters like Lavine Sabonis and Keegan Murray uh come back and it sounds like Doug still has full intention of having Russ come off the bench even with how impactful he’s been. Take a listen. you know, on once once players come back, I I think, you know, we we brought Russ in to be the backup point guard, but he has so many gifts that it’s like I mean, you could he played the four, so um he’s going to play all over the floor because of his physicality, his downhill nature. Um he rebounds the basketball at a high level. Um, but I think when we’re fully healthy, he even makes us better because Russell Westbrook playing against second unit players is like, you know, it’s a cheat code. So, um, yeah, but I mean, he he he’s going to find his way into closing games to every aspect of what it is for us to be a winning basketball team because he’s a winning basketball player. See, now I completely understand everything Doug Christie said there. completely understand and and one of the things he said there at the end like he’s absolutely right. The idea of Russell Westbrook prim primarily playing against second unit guys like yeah that is that is a cheat code and that’s something that the Sacramento Kings can exploit. The energy that Russell brings off the bench with that second unit I think is very very powerful very impactful especially when he’s coming in along with a Malik Monk. The two of them leading that bench unit can be very scary and can win the Sacramento Kings a lot of basketball games. That being said, I know it’s been a conversation on social media and and I think rightfully so amongst Kings fans. Like I know you brought Dennis Shruder in to be your your starting point guard. And by the way, Dennis Shruder had a pretty solid night in this game. Uh Shruder finished with 18 points, six of 17 from the field, seven rebounds, seven assists, and a block. But particularly in the fourth quarter, he got going. Russ also helped him get going. Shruder hit some big shots. went had 13 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, four of 10 from the field in the fourth, but three of five from three-point range. Shruder helped the Kings close out this game and get the victory. So, a pretty solid night for Shruder. So, I’m not trying to make this like an an anti-shooter thing, but I think a lot of people have talked about like, hey, would the Sacramento Kings be better off starting Russ at the point guard spot and having Dennis Shruder come in off the bench? Even though the Kings brought Shruder in and gave him a multi-year deal to be the starting point guard, I understand if Doug’s not there yet, doesn’t want to do that yet, doesn’t want to shake the confidence of Shruder or anything like that. But I will say this, if slashin the Sacramento Kings finally get fully healthy, they get their starting five back, I’m all for Russ coming off the bench, Shruder starting as your point guard and and seeing what that unit actually looks like in a regular season game because we haven’t seen it since the preseason. Keegan Murray hasn’t played a single second of real NBA basketball yet this year. If you roll it out there and they struggle energy-wise early on, it might not be fair to put that all on Shruder as your point guard, but maybe Doug should consider going to Shruder at that point or sorry, going to Westbrook in that starting point guard position at that point. Or like we saw tonight, Russ can play multiple different positions. So Russ, maybe if it’s not working with Keegan, if Keegan is slowly uh or struggling to reinccorporate himself from his injury and get up to speed, maybe you look at Russ instead of Keegan in certain aspects, although I think that would be silly considering the King’s lack of size. And I don’t know if you’re going to get Russ in there in place of Demar Rozan or Zack Lavine anytime soon. So, it really feels like, hey, if the starting unit is struggling and Russ brings that energy to the starting unit, maybe Shruder should take a backseat. We’re not there yet. We’re not anywhere close to it. We’ll we’ll have that conversation. We’ll cross that bridge when it comes to it, but I just think it’s something to monitor and something to keep an eye on. Want to talk about the offensive games that Demar Rosen and Malik Monk had because they needed it with Zack Lavine and Demand Sabonis being out. The defense for the Sacramento Kings and the adjustments they made on Jonathan Kamingo were really, really sharp. We’ll talk about that, too. Plus, the rookies, Maxim Reno and Nick Clifford stepped up in a major way tonight. That’s all still coming here on Locked on Kings. When we found out everybody who was not playing in this game, and by the way, I mean, Jimmy Butler dealing with his issue, Steph Curry dealing with an illness, we knew last night that that Steph Curry was not going to be playing in this game. But when we saw that Draymond Green was not playing, I’m I’m not Maybe Draymond’s going through something. I don’t know. But it just seems like whenever Steph Curry is out, suddenly Draymond Green is not available to play either. But we found out all these guys are missing plus all the guys on the on the Kings are missing and and you know you know me and narratives and I’m thinking God you know Jonathan Kaminga is going to make Kings fans either sad or angry tonight isn’t he? Like after all the entire summer of the Kings trying to get Kaminga or being involved in trade conversations and it ultimately results in him remaining a Warrior, he’s going to come into Sacramento and he’s going to put on a show and Kings fans are just going to be angry or upset about it. Right. Well, it looked like that prediction was coming true early in this game. In the first half, Jonathan Kaminga was unstoppable. The Kings had no answer for him. He had 17 points, six of nine from the field, one of two from three-point range, and just one foul in the first half. So, he was balling early on, and the Warriors built what, a 15-point lead, I think, was their biggest lead. 13, excuse me. 13-point lead was their biggest lead. Kaminga was the guy leading the charge with that. Kings had no answer. Second half. Not only did the Sacramento Kings do significantly better offensively in the second half, led by Russell Westbrook, defensively, the Kings made some adjustments. Jonathan Kaminga scored just seven points in the second half after 17 points in the first half. Shot just two of nine from the field in the second half after going six of nine in the first half. Went one of three from three-point range in the second half. And here’s the big thing, four fouls in the second half. So, it wasn’t just that the Kings defensively suddenly started locking down Kaminga, although I felt they did a really, really good job. Dennis Shruder stepped up and really did a good job defending Jonathan Kaminga one-on-one. I think I thought Clifford had some nice moments defending him, too. Just the Kings as a whole in the second half did a better job guarding Kaminga and making things as difficult as possible for him. But on the offensive end, they attacked Kaminga. They attacked him and they attacked him and they attacked him and they got him into foul trouble. They knocked him off his rhythm. He had to come out of the game, sit longer than he wanted to. He couldn’t be as physical as he wanted. Why? Because he was in foul trouble. So, really good job by the Sacramento Kings to use both ends of the floor, offense and defense, to slow Jonathan Kaminga down. And it was all part of a really impressive third quarter for the Kings where the Kings scored 18 points in the paint in the third quarter and had 18 free throws. The Kings got the Golden State Warriors in the penalty with 7 minutes and 17 seconds remaining in the third quarter. That is a long time to be in the penalty. The Kings came out of the gate aggressive to start the second half, which is a very welcome sight. They were attacking the basket, got the Warriors into foul trouble early. I mentioned they shot 18 free throws in that quarter. 13 of them came after the Warriors were in the penalty. You know, there have been a number of times over the years that the Kings have gotten a team in foul trouble with w with reasonably a lot of time left in a quarter. And I would consider reasonably to be like four or five minutes. Seven minutes is is pretty extreme. But usually like if you can get someone in foul trouble by the halfway part of a quarter, you’re in really good shape. But you got to take advantage of the fact that they’re in foul trouble, right? And that’s what the Kings did. They didn’t stop attacking. In fact, they picked up the aggressiveness, attacking the basket, attacking Kaminga, attacking different guys. They got themselves to the foul line, which helped them build a 3523 third quarter. That turned this game from the Kings trailing the entire time to the Kings able to build up a double- digit lead and and have control of this game in the fourth quarter. They got up to an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter. Again, credit to the Warriors a couple times made some quick runs to try and get back in this game and potentially steal it, but the Kings were able to to close the door. Again, Russell Westbrook phenomenal in this game. Like Russell Westbrook has the spotlight on him. He gets the crown. He gets all the resp the respect and the praise after the game. But Demard Rosen and Malik Monk were essential for the Sacramento Kings in this game, too. Not the most efficient scoring game for Demar Rosen, but he still led the Kings in scoring with 25 points. Eight of 20 from the field, but a perfect nine of nine from the free throw line. When a team is in foul trouble, you know who’s going to take advantage of that the most. It’s Demar getting the ball to his spot. I dare you to defend me one-on-one. I dare you to try and block my shot or reach in even a little bit. I’ll get you to the foul line or I’ll get you to foul me. To be fair, he probably should have gone to the foul line one more time. He was clobbered. Didn’t get the foul call. Let the referees know about it. ended up getting a technical foul on the play. Uh, and that ended up being a pretty significant moment because I think Pod stepped to the free throw line, hit the free throw after the technical, and that tied the game at 104 late. So, gave the Warriors a little bit of life, but the Kings again didn’t end up didn’t end up killing him. So, not really worth talking about beyond that, but a really solid game for D. Rozan. Then, Malik Monk back. He missed the last two games because of personal reasons. He returns and the Kings need him to score. He provides 21 points, six of 12 from the field, two of five from three-point range. Also went seven of eight from the free throw line. Those two performances are they’re always important to get two 20 plus performances out of those guys, but especially with Deonta Sabonis and Zack Lavine. Zack Lavine has been the above and beyond number one top scorer on your roster so far this season. He’s averaging around 30 points a game. You’re missing 30 points tonight. And Demar is already one of the top of number two if not number three leading scorer in on this Sacramento Kings team. So you need him to be himself and add a little bit more to it. And then you needed other guys to step up like Russ with his 23 points. Malik with his 21 points. Guys offensively stepped up to where the Kings even without Lavine and Sabonis could still score 121 points. That’s a really encouraging sign for this Kings offense. In addition to Russell Westbrook’s triple double, in addition to slowing down Jonathan Kaminga in the second half, in addition to Malik Monk and Deamar De Rozan stepping up offensively, the Kings got their best minutes they’ve gotten out of both of their rookies so far tonight. Both Nick Clifford and Maxim Reno stepped up. The Kings lacking depth, right? two big names out and you didn’t expect Meek even though he started or Max who was sent down to the G-League and then recalled to the Sacramento Kings just today like you didn’t expect either of them to be the be able to just straight up replace a Lavine or a Sabonis but they came in and they contributed like Nick Clifford I thought his shot selection was great it was fearless he was taking good shots he was solid on the defensive end 12 points four of eight shooting from the field three of six from three-point range he had a really nice like step back three that he hit from the angle uh in the first half. It was a thing of beauty. Also had three rebounds, three assists, and a steal. And then Maxim Reo, like I was so proud of Maxim Reno in this game. The way Max played, like this is the first time I know the Warriors don’t have big bruiser centers like some of the other teams in the NBA do. So this is a good matchup for Doug to throw Max out there and say, “Hey, here’s some NBA minutes, some important NBA minutes. They’re taking on still a championship caliber program even if they’re missing three of their top guys. Like this is still a important game. These are still NBA caliber players. And Max to this point has not really looked comfortable and ready yet for the NBA. But tonight he gave the Sacramento Kings 15 really solid NBA minutes. Six points, four of four from the free throw line, three rebounds, a steal, and a block. Maxim Reno, he looked like an NBA player tonight. He stepped up in a major way when the Kings needed those backup minutes with Drew Eubanks in that starting spot. And they experimented with Precious Ashawa a little bit. And by the way, Precious, let’s see, Precious played uh 9 minutes off of the bench in this game. Went two of two, four points, three rebounds, had a block shot. So, Precious did some good things, but he’s still getting acclimated here in Sacramento. Just joined the team yesterday. Max has at least been with the team through the training camp. He got the opportunity in this game and he did not waste it. After the game, I asked Doug Christie about his thoughts on the performance of his two rookies. Short-handed both Nick and Max giving you some of the best units they’ve given so far as rookies. What do you make of their performances? Um, Nick just man, he he’s he’s a talent, man. He he his aggressiveness, he’s he’s not scared. he’s going to come in the game and um you know he’s starting against a team that’s multiple time world champions and you know he just goes out there and he’s about his business. I always tell him to let the defense lead your game. Uh but he has so many different components that allows him to contribute to the game. Um and then Max big block rebounds and those are the things that you know we’ve talked to him about like for you to contribute at this level. One of the things is you got to be physical. You got to go get the ball and make sure when it’s coming off that board that you put two hands on it and you’re fighting for it. And I have uh the utmost respect that the kid played he played really hard tonight and I I I was really really pleased with his effort. So a great start to this home stand for the Kings and now they turn their attention to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday. You can I’m sure you can hear all the clanging and banging. Kind of hard to see there with the focus, but on the court behind me, you’ll notice that, or you might notice that they’re tearing out the court that the Kings played on tonight. That’s because they’re going to be setting up the brand new Kings NBA Cup court for Friday’s game when the Kings welcome in the Oklahoma City Thunder. Kings played the Thunder really, really tough on the road trip. Weren’t able to beat them in OKC. So hopefully they can start the uh NBA Cup off with a a victory and against the best team in their group for sure, their defending champions of course. But on top of that might be a little bit more rough than usual. Why? Because well the Thunder lost their first game tonight and they lost it in Portland against a suspect Portland Trailblazers team. Um yeah, I don’t think OKC is going to be in a very good mood coming into the Golden One Center on Friday. Hopefully the Sacramento Kings will be a lot healthier, meaning Sabonis and Lavine play on Friday. I think the Kings are going to need them in that game against OKC. But regardless, NBA Cup game, defending champs come to town. Should be an exciting evening. So, I look forward uh to that. And then after that, I mean, the the the home stand doesn’t get any easier. Uh but I like I like how this team is playing right now. I’m encouraged by how this team is playing. I’m not so like all a sudden complete 180 to the doom and gloom of a couple ep couple episodes ago or anything like that, but I like how this team is playing. They seem to be getting more comfortable together. Hopefully they can continue to build upon that momentum. Drew has a been a good pickup as well
Call me crazy, but I’d like to see the starting lineup with Eubanks and Sabonis
Great effort all around. Half our team vs half there's equals a W against the Dubs!! LTB!! 🔦🦁👑
Beastbrook dangeruss stilll🎉
💜
The older, the better, Russ Westbrook. Triple double. Dennis started bad, but he stepped up in the 4th with 3 3s. He fighted and that's what i expect. Nice win.
westbrook is legit good enough to get us into the playoffs
So happy for Russ!!!!
Who actually says "trip-dub " 😂
And no one wanted Westbrook?…unbelievable. He plays harder than 99.9% of nba players.
We seen in other teams how he plays worse when he comes off the bench
Matt I think Russ needs to start over Schröder and that isn’t a shot towards Schröder at all but Russ just brings something different. We might as well let him run the show
👑KingRuzZ wit tha trip tho😤
The best thing about Westbrook haters is how smart they make me feel.
Great performance against the warriors second unit tonight. Nice to see everyone get minutes and play winning basketball.
Don't want to have to pay him. It's restarted not to start him.
It's not important for Russ to start anymore! Russ with malik and drew as center is a cheatcode against everyone when they improve their game togehter also Russ with Dennis! The problem with Dennis is defending the POA position when you are closing the games.
When i say kuminga was A miss its in no way shape or form because i dont think Monk isnt good.
I wouldnt trade monk but i know Kings brass wants Him gone.
I say Kuminga was a miss because every Game ive watched Him play this season He's soaking wet with potential. His ceiling is perennial all star and all Nba every year.
Hes bigger and more physical then i thought. I love his cocky swag. I love his trash talking.
I like Monk too. Personally id try to trade another player instead of Monk but i know the salaries almost match and Kings brass wants Him gone
Sac Must Cont 2 PROTECT HOME COURT 💯
Christie is doing the same mistake Ty Lu did. If you start Russ you get early leads and get the team going instead of playing from behind all the time. Russ is by far a better floor general and passer than Denise. Duhhhh
How can u get 16 ribaunds. Unbelievable
Following Russ from OKC! My favorite player!
You're mixing up your point of who starts sometimes to mess your podcast?
Ive seen it before with Russ. He doesn't do as well coming off the bench. It will burst his confidence & performance badly.
I said this games ago Russ needs to start. It goes to show it’s not always about height it’s how you play. Draymond green 6’6 but he can guard any big man
Let’s keep it real….Westbrook is the best player to ever wear a Kings uniform. Starting or not, we are lucky to have him. The younger players will be light years ahead of where they’d be without him on the team years after he retires. LIGHT THE BEAM RUSS!!!!
I believe he has far more left in the tank than people think…he looks incredible and his three-point shooting looks like it had improved drastically I understand he’s never gonna be a very, very good three-point shooter, but he’s shooting well enough to keep the defense honest.
I was thrilled by Westbrook's game lot of fun. This was a fun game to watch
Just play more Clifford and let him handle the ball 😆
Starter Russ at pf I love !!! I said we needed Eubanks and Sabonis to help with rim protection and rebounding!!! But Russ can grab a lot of rebounds can’t wait to see him at pf with Sabonis in lineup!!! Sabonis needs less minutes
My personal dream Starter unit;
Sabonis C
Russ PG/PF
Keegan F
Demar F
Lavine G
‘Twas the Rugiet, m’lord
I don't really know what I can take away from game like this other than our middling depth is slightly better than the warriors middle depth with both teams missing 3 starters. Russ is absolutely fun to watch and his 3pt shooting has been solid. I'm still super annoyed that Scott Perry failed to bring JK to Sac and what is the reason that we are so late on such obvious pickups that could easily have cost us 2 games so far this season? Precious and Russ were guys that should've been signed before training camp and if they didn't have to work through initial rust I could easily see us having a couple more wins so far smh
Love Russ but he needed to stay in the league to check records off his bucket list. He did that last night, and I love he did it in Kings jersey.
Russ reminds me of iman shump a lot in how his energy has infected the team and made some believe. It proves to me this locker room lacks REAL leaders and will hold others accountable.
Once again Matt , really enjoy your post game show! Not just after a win, but your honesty and candour is refreshing! I really like this team’s makeup, they are only going get better and it appears Coach Christy is making things happen not just reactionary moves and the difference combinations are making a difference! Let’s keep it going boys!
Let’s GO Brodie! GO KINGS!
I’m a big fan of Russ and his game, but why is a 37 year old by far our best player? Also pleasee trade Derozan
When they didn’t get fancy, and just went back to DeRozan when they were in foul trouble is the type of IQ that the team was missing.
I Told Yall Don’t Underestimate Russ. He’s Really HIM 🐐
Nate Clifford really showed up and showed out took
