Why is Nolan Ryan not really associated with the Angels? Had arguably his best seasons as angels
November 6, 2025
A lot of people when talking about Ryan talk of him as Astro or ranger. 1973 was one of the best seasons from a pitcher all time. But people never talk about him that much. Why is that

He was a born and bred Texas boy who always associated himself more with that state.
Also the 70’s was a very long time ago. Few people on this website were old enough to remember the 1973 season.
He’s in the HoF as a Ranger. Had his best years there. So there’s that.
I actually think he is? That said, he spent more seasons with Houston and almost as many seasons with the Rangers. Plus, he’s a Texan by birth, and he was a long-time Rangers executive during some of their most successful seasons.
Just him being a Texan and then being involved with them after his career.
Oh man, I remember wearing stirrups over my socks back in the 80’s/90’s 😂
I think we called them strikers though
To add on to what others have mentioned, but the California Angels were not a great team up until Ryan’s last season in Anaheim in 1979. Not that this should tarnish Ryan’s accomplishments but there was not a lot of success as a whole.
I think its mainly because he’s in the HoF with Texas. Just like Vladdy is mainly associated with Anaheim even though he was excellent with Expos
Because being a Texan and playing with both Texas teams takes precedence. Like you, I wish he were even more revered as an Angel, but having only 8 years in a 27 year career is not going to do it.
My dad, an Angels fan, named me after Nolan Ryan. So I associate him with the Angels, haha.
He got paid. Plain and simple. The Rangers paid extra so he would go into the HOF as a Ranger.
That’s one of the reasons that the player doesn’t choose unless it’s someone like Jeter or Ripken.
Guerrero fought to be inducted as an Angel.
He’s a Texan. He owns The Round Rock Express, AAA for the Rangers. He owns company’s out here. He does commercials. He loves Texas.
Because everyone hates us
The reason is Buzzie Bavasi
Who would want to be associated with our shitshow?
Gonna be the same with Ohtani in 40 years

He almost came back to the Angels after Bud let him go like an idiot. But it was not to be. He is a product of Alvin Texas just outside of Houston. So, he will always be a Texas boy. He even has branded beef out here
1. Management, he considers himself an Ex-Ranger as he still lives in Texas no one asked him to throw out a first pitch during 2002
2. He’s The long time head of the Texas cattle Owners Association living outside the Metroplex so he doesn’t make appearances with The Mets or Astros either
3. Ask how Artie drove Rod Carew out of the OC, he’s not firmly an Ex-Twin
Ryan wanted to stay in 1979 but the inept front office disrespected him. He would have stayed many many years if the Angels just opened their wallets. They might even have a few more rings if they had retained him.
