Made 2 good plays and Garland couldn’t finish but somehow it’s Petey’s fault.

To all the haters that said Petey wasn’t trying last night

  1. Yeah I get it, he wasn’t bad but he needs to be THE difference maker in a 0-0 game. Also, grip it n rip it. Gotta shoot there

  2. Enough making excuses for this guy he makes 11.6. He’s been playing like shit for the last 2 years. He should be putting up superstar numbers carrying his line, making 3rd 4th liners look like top 6 players.

  3. neither of them wanted to shoot. 🤦‍♂️
and just as Kanes pass was “late” to Peteys breakaway. Peteys pass was “late” to Garland.

  4. The Petey haters would rather see him rip the puck directly off a defender’s stick and into the corner or out of play than see him try to set someone else up, no matter how cleanly.

Petey reads the play and creates that chance on his own, sees he’s completely covered and has a bad shot angle at the net, and drops it back to Garland. If Garland finishes on that it’s celebrated as a big brain hockey IQ moment. Garland doesn’t shoot, so suddenly it’s Petey not doing enough by himself.

The double standard is just tiring tbh.

  5. Petey needs to shoot. Man has the best shot on the team but loves to pass. Garland and kane playing with him also isnt great. Garland loves his bad shots deep in the zone, and kane tries to throw everything on net.

  6. He gonna go on a 5 game streak of like 10-12 points and everyone will shush.

The focus will then switch to Quinn playing defence like he did under Boudreau.

Thus is the cycle of a bad team.

  7. There are way bigger problems than Petey. And they are at the top of the organization.

  8. I feel like the issue with Petey is that despite having a good defensive game and instincts since his rookie season, Tocchet made him think otherwise.

It honestly looks like he’s so focused on thinking. Whether that’s making sure he’s got his assignment defensively rather than a chance on offence, or instead of just attacking he makes sure there’s like the formation ready first and waits.

  9. With Petey struggling offensively (by his high standards) but still playing great defensively, and Quinn Hughes looking a bit off this year, I suggest the bold strategy of making Hughes the 1C and moving Petey to defence.

  10. I’m not doubting his effort level, Petey just needs to be selfish.

HE NEEDS TO BE THE GUY. When he gets the puck he needs to take control and drive play. He is great off the puck, we all know that. There are multiple 50-40 point guys that are great off the puck. He needs to be the difference maker that this team needs.

  11. He should’ve shot, it’s become a mental thing for him where he’s unfortunately lacking in confidence so his first instinct is to always pass.

I’ll always remember Petey’s first ~10 games of his career, it was the most electrifying and skilled debut I’ve ever seen in the league. But it was the confidence that really stood out.

A combination of physical and mental setbacks have unfortunately hindered his potential.

  12. Pete was flying that whole shift, i didnt get to watch but a few mins and that was the shift i saw.

  13. I always brushed off rival fans saying we have a dumb, casual fanbase but this season has really opened my eyes to the fact they might be correct.

We are trying to win a cup and we’re praising a clip of our 11.6M 1C botching a scoring chance off a failed drop pass. The standards are not even low, they’re in the earth’s core at this point. He is on pace for 50 points again and THIS clip is what we’re using as a gotcha? Holy fuck we are doomed

  14. He hasn’t been bad in any game this season. He just rarely, if ever, steps up to be the guy to take over the game. It was 0-0 and we had so many chances. It would’ve been nice if our star player put the team on his back and won us the game.

  15. It’s not a lack of effort that’s the problem, it’s that he’s overthinking constantly which makes him make decisions slower than he does when he’s playing on instinct. And I’m starting to doubt he will ever stop doing it, because they can’t seem to get him to stop.

  16. Was at the game yesterday. Petey wasn’t the problem, it felt like it was the out of control no look passes and blown coverage down low.

  17. LOL, delete this nephew!

This is just a play. Not a good play, not a bad play, a hockey play.

Garland didn’t have a glorious chance – he had a guy with him, and his stick was checked immediately.

This is not a revelation of a play that shows that Petey is creating many a glorious chance, only to be let down by his teammates.

This is just a hockey play among dozens of such plays every game.

  18. Like this is not the hill the “shoot first” crowd should die on, like wtf is he supposed to do here?

He extends as much as possible to break up and create this play, theres no way he can position his feet fast enough to get a shoot off that doesnt resemble a muffin straight to the crest of the goalie.

He manages to pull off a pass to Garland, sure it could have been positioned a little bit more infront of Garland, but as you can see the defender’s stick is like inches away from Petey’s and Petey had to pull the puck back away from the defender to even have that space.

Afterwards he makes himself available for the type of goal that Bertuzzi scored twice on Lankinen, but the defender manages to pin his stick a bit, and Garland tried to make a one-time pass as opposed to a quick release for a deflection. Garland’s first game back & he was already running all over the ice on that PK shift, just like Petey.

What you don’t see is both of those guys make it back to the dzone for the backcheck after that play continues, and the canuck defenders lose their coverage and its a goal.

Does Petey need to shoot more? Abso-fucken-lutely.

Is this one of those situations? Absolutely not.

  19. He needs to learn how to skate. It’s one of my favorite players but honestly he’s got to be one of the worst skaters in the league.

  20. Why hate Petey? He’s taking 11.7 million a year from the worst ownership group in the league. Anyone who thought this was our year is an idiot. We lost Miller, Suter and Joshua and added a 34 year old who barely skated last season lol this team was cooked from the start. Compare this roster to the best teams in the league. Even when healthy its just not that good. Blame the people running this organization into the ground, not the players.

  21. I still would like to see him shoot more. If had stopped and maybe side stepped it would have been a better chance.

  22. I think that it is fair to say that we all want to see Petey regain his old form and that we all have an opinion as to how that can be achieved.
I hope for all of us Canucks supporters that he finds it.
If and when he does, we can then have discussion as to keep or trade. Right now he has little to no trade value without retention. To me, that would be the most unpalatable outcome..

  23. He did nothing? Blackhawks guy left it and petey didnt shoot as always. So yah. Still did nothing.

  24. Hes trying but we want him to score goals… He’s trying to get others involved but someone making THE MOST MONEY ON OUR TEAM needs to take over sometimes and just score. His mentality is not what we need right now. Everyone is just tired of him passing. We know he can pass, we need GOALS.
