The Chicago Bulls Are Proving Everyone Wrong

The Chicago Bulls are the best team in the Eastern Conference. That is not a sentence I or any of you thought we would hear seven games into the NBA season, but seven games in and the Bulls are 6 in1 to go along with a top 10 offense, a top 10 defense, and one of the best net ratings in the league. And not only that, but they have a 23-year-old point guard averaging 2310 and 9 a game. And it was the same point guard who helped set up their most recent game winner. Carter sets up a screen. Giddy races to the basket, fires it out. Vuvich the shot for three. That right there is why Josh Giddy will be an allstar. That right there is why Nicola Vuch has been perfect for the Bulls this season. And this right here is what makes this Bulls team special. Because after trailing by as many as 24 points, that shot from Nicolola Vuchic was the first time in the entire game that Chicago led. Let me say that again. The first time all game that the Bulls had a lead was with 3.2 seconds remaining. And this wasn’t just any win from Chicago. This was a win against the other hottest team in the Eastern Conference. Another team no one expected to be doing so well. But the Sixers were 5 and one. And despite 39 points from Tyrese Maxi, it was Josh Giddy. And it was the Bulls who won the game. And before you start typing in the comments, “Oh, this guy thinks the Bulls are going to be the best team in the NBA, blah blah blah.” Do I think the Bulls are going to win more games than the Cavs or the Knicks? I do not. But do I think this team is playing with an identity, with cohesion, with energy, with chemistry, and with an allstar point guard leading the way? Yes. All of those things are true. And when you have all of those ingredients, good things start to happen. And it would be one thing if this was a seven game sample size. The Bulls are 21-6 over their last 27 games. This extends back to last season. And by the way, their best player from last season hasn’t even stepped foot on the court yet. But we should talk about their best player from this season, and that is Josh Giddy. Because if you want to talk about proving people wrong, Josh Giddy is the encapsulation of proving everyone wrong. We all remember the trade for Alex Caruso and we all remember the reaction. Now, Alex Cruso won a championship and it was the right move for Oklahoma, but there were people talking about Josh Giddy like he was Killian Hayes. I saw people saying he was a much worse version of Ricky Rubio. And no disrespect to Ricky Rubio, but I don’t think he averaged 2310 and nine a game. The same guy who is being compared to Killian Hayes is doing things like this. Vu comes to set the screen. Bri slides over to cover the pass and watch Giddy fake as if he’s going to back it out, going between the legs and the nasty crossover to freeze Boner and then finish underneath him. Or how about with less than 90 seconds remaining and this time he pretty much just attacks Grimes with the crossover, getting to his spot and then floating it in. And I can’t stress enough he turned 23 years old last month. Just to put into perspective how young Josh Giddy still is. He is 1 month older than Brandon Miller. One of those players is still being talked about for his potential and what he could become. The other is leading a team to a 6 in1 record and is playing like an all-star. And I shouldn’t need to say this. That is not slandering Brandon Miller. It’s just an example. And it’s important to realize this when you see the improvements Giddy has made to his game. Because I showed you those clips. We are starting to see what happens when someone who is 6’8 with elite vision and a solid handle adds muscle. He improves that handle. He improves his confidence and of course the jump shot. People are going to look at this and think it’s a fluke because he’s shooting 42% from three. But Josh Giddy isn’t having a career year because of his three-point shooting. He’s having a career year because 60% of his shots have been within 10 ft. He’s having a career year because he’s getting to the free throw line more than ever. He’s consistently getting into the paint. He’s setting up his teammates better than ever. And that right there leads me to believe this is sustainable. Maybe he won’t average a triple double, but when you combine his size, his strength, his ability to get to the rim, and the free throw line now with his passing, which has always been some of the best in the league, that is an allstar level player. And that alone makes this Balls team interesting. But it’s not just Josh Giddy either. I’m going to put my hand up and say I never thought Josh Giddy was a terrible player like so many other people did. But at the same time, entering this season, the player I was most excited to see was Mattis Bazelis. And it’s pretty simple. There aren’t many players who can move like he does at his size. Me at the rim, Mr. Stewart. And he is not disappointed one bit because so far this season he’s improved in every single statistical category, which is what you hope for from a secondyear player. But 15 points a game, solid defense, playing 30 minutes a night on a current playoff team, that is everything and more you could ask for. And on top of all of this, the threepoint shooting. Now, shout out to the best basketball podcast on the planet, numbers on the board, because this three-point shooting reminds me of something Mattis said in his pre-draft interview. I shot extremely well in practices. Like, it’s just it’s it just was the game. You know, if I shot well this season, even like 37%, I’m the lock number one pick. Yeah, and that is proving to be true because right now there are maybe two or maximum three players that you would take over Mattis Bazllis in a reddraft because right now this is the worst version that we are going to see and he is currently a 15 point per game scorer who has really high upside defensively is knocking down open threes is dangerous in transition and is only getting better in the half court. If Mattis Bazellis didn’t improve his game at all, he would be getting paid $25 million a year just to do what he’s currently doing. Actually, um, how much did Patrick Williams get paid? Sorry, Bulls fans. And luckily for Bulls fans, I only see him continuing to improve. And speaking of improvement, can we not sleep on Io Dumu? Actually, we could just pair IO and Trey Jones together. In fact, let’s add Kobe White because these three guys are all the same age. They don’t have identical skill sets by any means, but just the balance of playmaking, driving, and shooting with Trey obviously being the worst shooter. But I think these three guys kind of sum up what is so great about this team. Three guys that play with energy. Three guys that have balanced skill sets. And it means the Bulls consistently have multiple guys on the floor, including Josh Giddy, who can create for themselves and set up their teammates who can keep the ball moving and keep the pace up. So far this season, they’ve been pretty lucky with how teams have shot the three ball, which is why their defense has been good. And when you look at this team, I don’t expect a top 10 defense at all, but I could see a top 10 offense because of what I just mentioned. And speaking of great offense, we’ve also got to talk about the guy who hit the gamewinning shot. Yes, he’s 35 years old. Yes, he doesn’t fit the timeline. Yes, they’ve been wanting to trade him for the last 4 years. Yes, he is still a great offensive player. Nicolvich might not be a perfect center, but offensively speaking, he’s making everyone on the ball’s life that much easier with the spacing and presence he provides. And clearly he can also knock down some clutch threes as well. I don’t know how good this Bulls team truly is, but like I said, over the last 27 games, they’re 21 and six. At the very least, I see this as a top eight team and a very fun team at that. I’m not calling this the next dynasty, but something fun is finally happening in Chicago. And any reason for Stacy King and Adam mean to be hyped, that is enough reason for me.   17. When coby white comes back that bench is gonna be insane. Theyll still have the defensive identity thanks to Okoro playing at the three and then Giddy will have both Buzelis and Coby to pass on the perimeter and then Vooch inside. Not only that vooch can dish it back out. Then Tre Ayo and Huerter off the bench!? Man. Honestly just need a true rim protector maybe at the deadline and then this team will be nasty.

In all seriousness though, I've always thought the Bulls had the pieces to be good when you looked at their individual players, so I've always kinda thought why can't they put it together? Well now they are and you're seeing each the talents of each of their individuals coming to fruition as a unit.

  26. Every season we see hot starts from teams generally expected to be Mid to bottom tier in both conferences. I think the Bulls might make the playoffs but in the East right now that alone isn't saying much. Giddey's 3pt shooting we'll come back to earth if he keeps up the volume because he's an average shooter at best. Look at his misses, they are way off which says that his shooting won't be consistently good over a large enough sample size.
    Still the fast pace of the Bulls, Heat and a few other teams like the Pacers last year is fun to watch and is the antidote to some of the huge line ups some teams are putting out.

    Now 15-5 is .750. .750 times 82 is 61-21 projected for a full season. That is a decent record for teams at the top of their division.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the embodiment of the word “salvation” (Jn. 11:25)! Are you now willing to acknowledge the bad news of the Old Testament that reveals your own lost and sinful condition before a holy God (Job 9:2; 14:4; 15:14; 25:4; Ps. 51:5; 58:3; 130:3; 143:2; Eccl. 7:20; Isa. 64:6)? Unless you do, how would you be able to fully appreciate the good news of the New Testament? The news that, “. . . Jesus came . . . to save sinners …” (1 Tim. 1:15; 3:16). Thus, He paid our sin penalty and nullified death [separation] (1 Cor. 15:54-57) from God. Our salvation MUST be based solely on what the Lord Jesus has done for us and not on anything we have done, are doing, or might do for Him!

    Are you now willing to believe [trust], by faith alone, that God the Son, allowed Himself to be separated [death] from God the Father and God the Holy Spirit for three hours (Mt. 27:45-50) so that you would not have to be (Lk. 23:44, 46)?
