Face up to it – this team is destined for perpetual mediocrity.
This hockey market doesn’t have the patience or tolerance for a rebuild, and yet we just lost to a team that just went through one. We’re content with our lousy draft positions year after year, because we’re satisfied enough with achieving middling results (look at everybody wetting their pants when we beat a sub .500 team in Nashville).
We proudly exhort Fuck Messier as a point of pride .. and yet we fiercely defend a 1C and his $11m contract who has been unable to generate more offense despite being ten years younger!
We have regressed hard from a couple of years ago, and yet our core players are at the peak years of their careers.
Mediocrity isn’t just a mindset here – it’s destiny.

My thoughts exactly. I’m frustrated with this team and have been for quite a while now.
I’m with you. I’m not excited by any aspect of the team or its potential.
Even with JT it was threading a needle to get enough out of the roster after so many bad decisions to be a contender.
Post JT and the massive loss on that trade it would take Petey evolving further from his best seasons into a 135 point guy for the Canucks to seriously challenge for a cup.
It was over the moment JT left, it was probably over before, but JT and Peteys beef shut any small window the Canucks had.
Hughes is good enough to drag the team to mid, but once he leaves I don’t think anything is stopping this team from finally bottoming out.
You can’t lose trade after trade and roster move after roster move for a decade in a cap league where everything else is (mostly) equal and expect to compete.
pretty much sums up my life, so I guess it’s apt that I support this team

Currently there is no hope. I need hope to stay engaged. I may look elsewhere for hope.
No, we’re fine with a real rebuild
I really wish enough fans were smart enough to vote with their wallets, attendance goes down drastically, a big middle finger the the god awful worst in the entire league ownership group
It’s not the market that doesn’t want the rebuild, the fans have been asking for one since the sedins left.
It’s Aquilini, guys money hungry and thinks being middle of the pack is good enough just to get his round 1 money
BS on the hockey market not wanting a rebuild, ownership doesn’t want a rebuild – FTFY.
You’re right about perpetual mediocrity, it has crippled this franchise and will lead to the best player in franchise history walking before the start of next season.
The Canucks are the biggest show in town and have no real competition so those loser owners we are stuck with will continue down the path of chasing playoff revenue with their pea brained nonsense. Meanwhile, true fans suffer, and casual fans pay 25 bucks per beer while keeping that damn arena full.
I disagree. This fanbase would welcome a rebuild. Stomaching Hughes leaving would take time though.
The hockey market is more than willing to suffer through a rebuild, Francesco is not. Until he sells this will be and is Vancouver Canucks hockey.
I’ve lost confidence this core.
We can blame coaching, management and ownership all we want… but at the end of the day this core just hasn’t met expectations and isn’t good enough to contend.
It’s hard to see a path forward other than a painful 7-8+ year rebuild (whether its accidental or on purpose).
Basically. The moment the fans at Rogers chanted “Fire Gillis” we’ve been doomed since. Imagine that hubris less than 2 years after seeing the best Canucks team got to Game 7 of the finals.
Since Gillis left we hired an absolute parade of failures in management, and then replaced that regime with an 80-year old man who drove Pittsburgh into the ground.
Allvin better think we have a chance to re-sign Hughes, because we could have traded Boeser, Garland, Demko, and Lank last TDL/summer, because we’re locked in now.
Mediocrity is destiny for at least 4 years.
I would love a full on rebuild..it should have been done years ago. Unfortunately an actual rebuild would mean trading anything we can get high picks/prospects for which means the end of the Hughes era. It sucks but needs to be done. I’m sick of this same shit on repeat, it’s a joke.
Nicely said. Look on the bright side though we got PWHL Hockey here now, I watched it last season it’s very competitive hockey. Should be plenty entertaining.
I got shredded all summer long for pushing back and saying the ideas that letting Suter go was dumb, getting Kane was dumb, assuming the teams offence was good was dumb, and that the teams defence wasn’t “top five in the entire league”. I like the Canucks, but completely pushed back on so many moves all summer, and got hated on by the toxic optimists who think everything just works out.
People were comparing guys like Elias D Pettersson and Victor Mancini to true blue-chip prospects, and saying Pettersson was going to get 100 points because he gained a couple pounds of muscle. They were saying guys like DOC and Hoglander were going to magically turn into 20 goal scorers with insane two-way play.
As I said all summer, this fanbase loves sniffing on its hopium. This team isn’t bad or good, it’s mediocre and a mushy middle type team. The Canucks desperately need a rebuild to set things right.
Finally got back into hockey after a 10 year hiatus. Grew up as a Canuck, still consider them “my” team, but also kind of looking at it all with fresh eyes.
Idk if its a ‘girl’ thing, but the amount of heart/player charisma(?) in the sport is important to me beyond just winning and HOLY FUCK the Canucks are so bad to watch even when we eek one out.
Barely anyone on the team looks like they care or want to be there (not you Sherwood, youre a precious angel).
Switch over to a team like Montreal, Utah or San Jose who have made drastic changes in the last few years and who have players who look like they give a shit and the contrast is so drastic.
Canucks need to watch some Shoresy – “It’s not that they don’t love to win, it’s that they don’t hate to lose”
Müller said it best, Vancouver just accepts losing way too easily
the only answer is, trade our only valuable asset. Hughes. Get a haul for him in picks and prospects and rebuild. This team with these players will stay in the mushy middle.
Content with our draft positions? Buddy, I was furious they derailed the Bedard tank in 2023 when they brought in Tocchet to win easy games. Hell, I was mad in 2021 when they won a bunch of useless games at the end of the season and dropped from being able to draft Luke Hughes.
I desperately crave a rebuild. But Aquilini wants his two home playoff games and to squeeze thousands of dollars out of your pockets.
You want a rebuild? Stop attending games. Stop watching. Stop buying jerseys, shirts, and hats. That may cause our slumlord to take action and realise things. But much like Pokemon and their shitty games, if the sales numbers keep going up they see no reason to change anything.
I love this team, but I don’t care much for it these days.
Agree but I don’t think anyone is fiercely defending petey. And voting with my wallet. Not going to games.
Hate the experience anyway. It’s like being at a circus, constantly yelled at, come and see the amazing 11 million dollar man! He skates, he back checks usually, he gets up after being knocked down over and over again. But mostly it’s , buy this buy that look at this hand look at that hand oooh it’s an amazing show!
People need to stop worrying about Petey’s mental health (fact – it’s actually physical, not mental) and worry about their own
Wait wait wait at least we have tons of cap space, we just haven’t spent our money yet!!!
… oh wait
Aquilini has broken my spirit as a fan. For the first time since 1999 I’ve missed 90% of the games so far this year and don’t plan on watching much going forward until they finally admit a full rebuild is needed.
The moment you say the hockey market doesnt have the patience you lose the plot with the post, complete swing and a miss on the read of a pretty smart fanbase and makes me not care about the rest of the post.
Everybody and their mother wanted rebuild for over a decade now. Everybody except for the owner and the management group he hires.
True hockey fans would understand a rebuild. The fringe are the issue. The fringe make up a majority of the attendance at Rogers, because they can afford it. Hockey to them is something “Cool” to do, not a passion. So when it becomes uncool, they don’t go.
Yeah, it’s embarrassing to lose to Chicago, but that team had two individual efforts carrying that win. It happens. The sky is not falling, folks.
I just want a true rebuild.
This shit owner will never allow it so we’ll be stuck in mediocrity forever
Increased cap will only make it harder for mediocre teams to improve, so We might as well rebuild, to be honest. It’s hard watching this “if we lucky, we’re a playoff team” for 15 years.
We want the cup, not a pat in the back for being a wild card team. Though we all know at this point that it won’t happen because Aqua’s primary objective is to milk as much money from us as possible. Championship and legacy are worthless to him.
