  1. Some time in the AHL is ganna be good for him. He has been amazing in some games and not so great in others. He will be called up soon enough anyways

  2. Had a good run, but considering this team just straight-up has too many players, this was the right choice.

A lot of people are fighting for the chance to be in the line-up, and while I was genuinely impressed with Cowan at moments, there were also moments that showed me that time in the AHL would be kind to him. He’s been hot and cold. Which describes a lot of this team to be fair, but while I think he adds to the line-up, I don’t think the Leafs are necessarily WORSE without him.

He’s 20 and currently waivers exempt. His spot is the safest to give up, and I’d rather him be developing in the AHL than on an NHL roster where he may end up sitting for days or weeks at a time. The AHL is FOR players like Cowan, so use it.

  3. He’ll get lots of ice time in all scenarios. PP/PK/OT. I’m sure they have given him specific things to work on while he’s in the AHL. He’ll be back up soon enough.

  4. It’s the easy move to make. Not sure if the GM is unable to make a trade or scared to make one. Log jam in bottom six should have been dealt with in the summer i.e Kampf, jankrok or robertson traded. Good to upgrade bottom of the roster but they don’t need 9 4th liners.

  5. I like how Cowan performed. Admittedly I wasn’t buying the hype on him, thought he would be too small to fill an NHL role but I can admit when I’m wrong.

Love to see him carry the puck into the o zone and look for his teammates. Hopeful he fills that offensive elite playmaker role

  6. Let him over ripen in the AHL. Let him learn to dominate at that level. Then bring him up. Don’t rush him.

  7. As much as I know it’s the right call, this kid has been great no matter where he slotted into the lineup. Really excited for the future

  8. Yeah this makes me sad, but now I’m gonna watch every marlies game I can now.

And maybe we will all end up seeing some other young guys we like too

  9. He needs the time. This is fine. He’s been great, mostly… but his inexperience shows at times and come on what this kid is going to be thrown to the wolves in the top 6, on a  team that’s willingness to stand up for each other is questionable, in a market that is an absolute pressure cooker?

He doesn’t need that ALL year. He got a taste, saw what it takes, and showed he can hang. Let him work on his skills in the AHL, and hell maybe we see him again. I mean he has some seriously special potential.. I don’t want to see him get the Kadri treatment, but I also don’t want to rush him and he end up injured or something…

I’m also not convinced that Berube’s system will do him any favours in the longterm.

  10. Disappointed to see him go, but I understand the situation. Hopefully he tears it up in the AHL.
I’d like to see Laughton finally be able to show us what he can bring .

  11. I wish we didn’t burn the 1st year of his ELC with 10 games played but i can’t wait to see how he plays against AHL competition.

  12. Honestly, as much as he may be bummed about this, and I am as a fan, this is for the best. I am significantly more confident about how impactful he’ll be for the leafs later this seasons and beyond. He’s legit. Slam dunk middle six.

  13. I don’t mind this decision let him develop in the AHL. Guys like Nylander spent time dominating the league before being called up. No need to rush Cowan.

  14. Nylander played 75 games with Marlies.

It’s rare to have players fast track. It’s for the best to let him develop and then hit the ground running as a top 6 player.

  15. As sad as I am it was the right call. Let cowboy get some time to get stronger and he’ll be back better than ever.

  16. I’m thinking he’ll be back up quickly. Benoit is sick and can’t go. They couldn’t send down Mermis because they need him to play tonight.

  17. He had some good looks and at times was genius at others he looked like a guy who was playing in the OHL. I feel like his passes could be crisper and faster but his hockey IQ is incredible. Can’t wait to watch him play on the Marlies!

I’m sure he’ll rejoin the team at various points during the year.

  18. Should have been one game ago, so he doesn’t burn a year of his ELC if he stays down all season. Too late for that now.

  19. Just let him cook in the AHL, Willy and Naz both had extended periods on the Marlies before joining the Leafs.

Even half a season of regular top 6 minutes in the AHL where no one cares about mistakes will do wonders for his decision making

  20. If he was a dman doing well, it would probably be easier to keep him as #7 and/or rotate him in/out with Benoit.

As a forward, he has to be noticeably better than Laughton / Lorentz / Jarnkrok, etc.. Not that they’re GREAT players, but they’re not that bad either.

  21. He looked pretty good for his stint so far but him cooking in the AHL wouldn’t hurt him
