FILM REVIEW | New Orleans Pelicans Have A Nightmare Matchup With Derik Queen

What’s up, guys? Welcome back to another film session breakdown. This time, Leo and Jared are joining me. Uh we’re going to talk about basically what the Pelicans have done in the last two games in crunchtime moments here with Derek Queen. Uh and so we’ll start off here with the Charlotte uh game where the Pelicans, as you can see, are down nine here with 11 minutes left. And most of the time, so Jared, I kind of want you to elaborate a little bit on this, but me and you have talked about this a lot uh about how they run their elbows set, right? And we talked about, well, we need to put the guys in right positions to run elbows. So, really, it’s it’s two here, it’s one up top, and then you have two corners uh right there, right? And so, they run this action a lot. And what I like about this, though, is they kind of blow it up here. You see the fake handoff, and then Derek Queen does this. And this is the beauty of Queen, like he can just get to that jumper. Um, they run the same thing here. 15 foot jumper. Yeah. So, you’ve played off from that. Now, we’re going to go back into this. And now, let’s talk about So, let’s people can’t make that pass. Let’s talk about this. People don’t even see it. So, yeah, that’s facts. Cuz it’s not it’s not it’s not like he got a whole, you know, he ain’t got a lot of space to work with there, right? Justin, you know, we was talking about the other day. Soon as your defender back, the head his defender headed the head is turned. So, this is So, let’s talk about this guys. And we I talked about this yesterday about varying your action. So what happens here? Jose enters it into queen here and supposed to see this cross screen where Hawkins comes off and you do the dribble handoff but uh Jar I’ll let you go first here and then I want you to talk about as you said the defender’s head is turned right so he’s not seeing the basketball so already sees that right. So Jared talk about Jose here how he acts like he’s going to screen for Hawk and then B quick slip. I mean you kind of already did it but this is super important. Stop it right. Stop it right there. Like there’s no ball pressure. Like imagine Tom Brady in the pocket with no pressure. I’m not saying Derek Queen is Tom Brady, but dog, you give anybody a clean pocket, you gonna get picked apart. And this is a great cut by Jose. Like you cut with one anticipation and you cut hard. Like when you know there’s a chance of you getting the ball, people tend to cut a little harder. Right. As soon as Trey man’s head is turned, you’re dead, dog. Like you you guys saw that the pass Joker made uh a couple day couple nights ago and he threw it above a guy’s head. Like my coach used to tell me you throw it at his ear. Why? Cuz you can’t block that. You like the anticipation either you gonna move your head. Your your instincts don’t tend to tell you you can block here. it it’s just all about understanding the game of basketball and and Derek Queen having a clear a clean pocket, no pressure. Yo, he’s picking you off. And and you bring up a good point here, Le, I want to hear your point uh facts because you saw Gaffford had to have ball pressure, right? Uh against the Mavericks. And what did he do? He just went and blew blew past his defender. Um but I just love that action there. It’s just a high IQ play from Jose. So once again, you see high post Hawk navigating the screen and just hitting that. All right, here you go, Leo. That’s just that’s just that’s just skill and creativity right there. Like so can I can I stop you here, Leo, before you get into your explanation here? Because what you saw against Dallas is gaff return and guard Derek Queen at the literally at the half court line. This right here you see I I don’t know how to pronounce his name but Charlotte center droper. Yeah. And this gives all the room for Derek Queen operating. You’re dead. You’re dead. Let me tell rewind. Let me show you when you’re dead. Right there. That’s when you That’s when Derek Queen knew he was dead. When he was crossing half court and his back was still halfway turned. He was dead. It was nothing he could do. And there’s no help. That little that little hy did for James to to leave and go back to his man. A little hesitation like that. That’s that’s that’s that’s a guard, bro. That’s a guard. That’s a guard play. The the the the drop euro into the the the onelegged like, bro, the dude is just really really skilled and he really smart. He he his anticipation and his timing are the things that going to make him so good. Look at the balance on that. That’s not a normal shot. Like no, not too many people are going to hit that because the bump is going to throw you off, right? The bump. Boom. I’m creating the contact, but but watch the space I make. My body still there. You gone. Now he gone. It’s more of a like it’s like a side step that he did. But it’s just the patience that he had. Like what Justin go back a little bit. Watch how low he gets with the basketball. He He gonna make Brick Kai Runner have to make a decision. He made the wrong decision. He stepped up. Damn. I mean, you talk about range though. You go like Lo said like look how low he is with the ball and he’s 611. Like it’s like your range from going like it’s hard to guard that. It truly is because you’re you’re changing your your body height, right? So your defender is trying to, you know, mimic that. Then his pace is different. It’s unconventional and he’s on balance. That’s Jerry. That right there, you know, like when you get We’ve We’re big baseball guys. You know, like when you get in your wind up and pitchers usually balance first, like they do four or five seconds, then they get into their into their motion. This kind of reminds me of a pitcher where like he is so comfortable with his balance and playing off of one leg that he can slow step bring that right foot down so it’s not a travel and he creates the contact here’s the whistle and now he knows he has his defender to finish for someone with probably a large you know stride per se he’s extremely like his feet are under him at all times you know you see people do that and they’ll overstride and then you’re off balance, but right, he’s just moving very slowly and methodically and getting to a place where he can be effective. Yeah. You know, you know, the the thing the thing is about him as we get into the next play is that he’s never been able to out jump anybody. Nope. So this this take that he wouldn’t be able to he wouldn’t be able to sustain this type of play in the NBA is one of the things that like I feel it’s like right you take Jose for example Jose’s never been taller than anybody. Jose’s going to play Jose’s game. Why wouldn’t you think of Derek Queen yeah I may not be athletic. I’m strong and I’m smart and I’m still very nimble to say he’s 611. I don’t know what he weighs but to say he’s 611 and he’s that he’s that big. You can’t knock him off his spot for one, right? Right. No, you’re right. Um, Leo, so I I referenced what you and Jarrett and Chris broke down the other day, uh, and y’all were just absolutely spot on because the thing coming out of out of, uh, college in Maryland, uh, Derrick Queen didn’t have a motor. He, you know, he he was lazy. And I love this possession because I want y’all to watch what Derek Queen does in 16 seconds with the shot clock in a four-point game, right? So, we hit the pocket pass, we get nothing there. Okay, so Queen, he’s open. We just miss him. That’s okay. So instead of standing, what does he do? We’re now going to have the pick. And he ran to it. He ran to that pick. So look at all the space between there. His defender and him, right? So then he’s going to run to Sadique. All right. Let’s create this. Should have probably gotten off it a little bit earlier. That’s okay. Okay. So now let’s watch Derrick Queen again. So now there’s eight seconds. He’s now going to sprint back up and get Jose Alvarado a screen. So that’s two screens and a pocket pass within eight seconds. And we probably should have dumped it off here, but we kind of got a little too late and it’s a turnover, but I just wanted to show everybody the activity of Derek Queen. You, you know, they missed him a couple times, but the activity is there. Look like a motor to me. Yeah, looks like a motor to me. And this is all just in the fourth quarter. So again, here we go again with the elbow. Um Jarrett, look at the space. Look at the look at the space he created. Oh, all right. Ain’t nobody there. Excuse me. Just missed it. But I don’t mind the process. Beautiful, though. It was beautiful. Ah, what happened here? Did I mess it up? I thought we split action. I must have messed up the video. I apologize. All right, let’s see what we got. Five-point game, five minutes left. Oh, here we go, Jarrett. All right, so split action, right? So, yeah, ball enters here. You would call You are right, Jared. like he’s basically the three-point line. So, you’re going to have this split action between Jose and Pool. Uh, that’s how it’s supposed to come off. So, Jose had this cross screen. Pool then comes off, but look at all of the room this dude has to Can you Can you My bad. Five. No. No. Go ahead. Can Okay. So, look. Look. I I want to I want to say something important. I want to pay I want people to pay attention to something important. Go back to him waiting on the basketball to receive the basketball. Okay. Right. He’s posting them up. All right. And I go back to as soon as he catches the basketball, watch his watch his foot cross over, right? Watch him cross his foot over, right? He he open he opened the defender up to where he wanted him to go. So the defender more so had the inside position. Once he gets into a triple threat position, I could go baseline. Now you got to explain. For everybody watching, can you explain triple threat, please? Yeah. Yeah. So, so think of uh Carmelo on the elbow catching the basketball from a guard top of the key or or on the wing, right? Like I’m going to turn and face is going to give me more access to I mean I’m basically a threat and I can either dribble, pass, shoot, whatever I want to do in that spot. So Derek Queen has uh uh the uh what’s what is his name? Uh the the uh the uh number 14. Number 14. I can’t think of his name. number 14 for uh Charlotte. Yeah. Basically, he turns him into a victim because he had the inside position, but once Derek Queen opens his presence up and he he crosses his foot over he’s got he creates a base for himself and then he start he jabs to the inside, throws him off and once he gets him in the air, it’s full. It’s barbecue chicken to be honest. But again, I want to go back to where he crossed his foot over on the on the line because once he c once he does this and he opens it up, bro, he he cooked right there because now I got the whole side of the floor to work with. There’s no defender. I can go baseline. I can go I can drive to the weak side. I could go to the strong side. Whatever whatever I whatever I please. And then you got the activity from Herb and Trey on the weak side of it. Right. So like it’s just a real I I think I Justin me and you talked about this. I tell you I tell you all the time I think all post players like I understand with back to the basket game you got to have some sort of face up face up. Uh one thing I wanted to mention Jerry I want you to talk about this uh because you know we talked about Zion all the time and how the the paint’s clogged up and crunch time and it looks so bad. So Queen’s got the ball right. I’m going to circle where Saxon’s head is. Canipple’s head. Oh, sorry. I don’t know. 33’s name. And bridges. No one’s paying attention to Queen, right? And then look. So, Queen sees that. Look at this room he has to operate. You really never see this with When’s the last time you’ve seen this much space, Jared, in a crunch time situation? Seriously, you don’t. You don’t. Um, one, this could be bad on Charlotte’s part because no one’s help side, but but you got a shooter in Trey, so Bridges can’t really help, right? No, that’s what I’m saying. You don’t have anyone in helpside. That’s what I mean. Like, right. No one’s there. Again, I don’t know 33’s name. I mean, he’s guarding Herb. We talk about people helping off Herb all the time. Like his back is literally to the ball. He can’t see anything, right? So, but again, like this space, like Derek Queen did exactly what he needed to do, right? He he got one-on-one with somebody and that’s all you can ask for most of the time, right? Like I got this side of this the floor to myself. Can I go and create and I’m in the middle of the floor and I got a height advantage. You kind of take those odds, you know, nine out of 10 times. Yeah. Just a high IQ play. Jet lead over. We were talking about this yesterday. It’s the anticipation queen. Yep. What a steal. Like it was so it would it was just a really smooth reaction, you know? He didn’t he didn’t overextend himself like he he didn’t lose his balance when he got the steal because again a 611 man having to get floor floor height to steal a basketball. He he he he just it just looked everything Derek Queen does looks natural. Yeah, I thought it was the only bad shot um of the fourth quarter was kind of kind of rushed there. Okay, now we’re Queen in transition. Look at that pass. Do you realize that the kind of touch you got to have on a I’m not I’m saying Derek Queen’s full speed. It’s not everybody else’s full speed, but the type of the type of finesse you got to have to be able to accurately place that pass. It’s the feel, right? Like you you know where Jos’s going. You you feel the rhythm of the basketball in your hands. It wasn’t like he had to double tap it to get it over there. It was as if he was running with the basketball and just you kind of just flick it on over there. So, let’s talk. So, once again, Jarrett, you’re seeing the same possession here. Um, couple things. So, we’re high out, right? Jose’s going to come screen. So, one thing about Trey. So, if Trey is going to do this. So, really, right, it’s Trey’s decision. So, if Trey goes under, Jose pops. If comes, right? Yeah. So, my only thing with Trey is if he goes back door, that’s great. Complete the cut. I would just I would like to see him just complete the cut because to where to where does he need to go Justin me? No to you like where how do you complete the cut? So I would literally complete the cut and fill out right here. J Sadi would then fill up and then you flip it to Jose and get into twoman and queen dive. What do you have? I I say go opposite block right essentially what you that works right here. Look at the space between, you know, Derek Queen and his defender. Look at this. Like if Trey makes a just a beline seals his man, you got two feet in the paint. Like Yeah. Anybody can give you the ball right there. Like the angles little high low. Yeah. Yes. The angles are there. Well said. So back to his, you know, Derek Queen says, “This is what I love. I love this Leo. Look at Queen like go. Come on.” Like he’s directing. So he’s like, “All right, you’re not going to cut. So let me go Sadique Bay. Go to the other side. Kill it. Now watch queen. Okay, so he throws it. He could stand. What does he go do? Go sets the pick and he runs. He runs to the pick. He doesn’t walk to the pick. He doesn’t jog to the pick. Jose’s patient, reads it. I I don’t think people give Derek Lee enough credit about finishing around the rim. Either hand. I don’t I don’t think people give him I don’t think people give him enough credit for that because you you you think of of bigs and of course you want him to dunk but like two points is two points no matter how you get two points like did you complete the play Justin can we go back though because I would like to talk about an annoyance of of my want to stop it on the set go to the yeah go it’s to it’s the tray cut or lack or Yep, bro. I hate when people do not complete a a a cut. I I hate I follow through with it. The other thing, too, is if you see the the the lack of speed on the action. It’s like he did it like a walk through. He ain’t even he ain’t even like put he ain’t put no type of intensity on. But Leo, even this So watch. So even if he doesn’t complete the cut, Jose’s now lost. So, because like now Jose goes basic. Wait, there’s Trey right there. Right. Right. And and basically you got to be able to complete the cut because I know Trey wants the ball. I think Trey Trey realizes the wrong read. Let’s see. Was it the wrong read, Jared? Let’s see. Justin, all he need Go. I’m sorry. My bad. My bad. It’s never really like like reads or read like whatever you feel the read is, right? Like it’s debatable. Correct. Sure. But if you’re going to be right or wrong, be fully that. I’m with you. Don’t be in the Don’t be in the gray area. Don’t be halfass in it because this is a half ass cut. I’m with you because he realized Yeah. Once he realized Bridges didn’t fall for it. He just go just go. You could have hes you could have hesitated and and continued on. But you you’re messing up everybody else because there is an opposite reaction, right? If you’re you’re the initiator, you’re the indicator. If you cut, then we get to do the other thing. By you being in like no man’s land, we’re all in no man’s land. Uh I I would also like to point out I would also like to point out Trey could have literally just he could have literally came around to out of Kai Briner’s vision sealed bridges and he had a layup. If you if you go through all of this spaces, all of that space is open for Queen right there to either make the pass, right? Because if you take my man away, I got it’s more space for me. Yep. Um, one thing I didn’t notice about this about this set, right, and credit to Sadique Bay. So, now that defenders, I think, will be guarding Queen more, right? So, I think it’s Canipple. He does a good job of of um denying Bay the ball, right? So, he brings it and then you see that curl cut. And what Curry and Draymond do so well, right, is when they really jam that dribble handoff, Curry just curls it and and Draymond just dumps it right ahead. So something queen actually looked for. Uh so right but since the the center did a really nice job of being in drop that could be open. That could be another another option for the Pelicans as well if they they get really high on those DHOs’s. Uh you can have those curls. That was a great job by Jose. Um Jar I know you hated this. Launched. Wait. He really launched it. You want me to rewind that or do you want to break it? Stop. Stop. No. Go back. Go back to the initial the rebound. Look. All right. Just just stop. Back up a little bit. I’m sorry. Jose. Yeah. Jose got his hands out like, “Yo, give me the rock right there.” Yep. Right there. Right there. That’s what they teach you as a guard. They teach you to get by the dotted line, circle and give the rock up. Give it up because they just you just completed a twoman between y’all two. You just got a bucket. You can you could do it again. I understand Trey’s open, but y’all ain’t did that yet. Y’all haven’t completed the the 70 foot alley hoop yet. You can be patient. Yeah. Well, look at uh look at uh look at Collins. He’s like, “What the cracks me up.” Did you want to see something, Leo? No, no, no, no. All right, so same action. All right, Trey comes off. Yep, bro. Hey, that’s a great shot. Go ahead, Jared. Go ahead. So now you got Canipple on him. Why is it a great shot, Jared? The the defender didn’t drop. You just came off of screen. The man’s trailing like That’s a shot you work on. No one’s going to be upset that you missed that. Nobody. I sure [ __ ] won’t. When’s the last time you saw Tre Murphy? I’m serious. When’s the last time coming off action, Trey Murphy shooting this wide open shot in crunch time? You never see it. You never see it. But I got Go ahead. But Jared, you talk about the process all the time, man. You talk about process, taking good shots. Even if they go in or out, doesn’t matter. This is a good process. But see, like we got to replicate this. It can’t be just in the fourth quarter where we see this the for the first time. Like [ __ ] that’s the first time he’s played. I mean, I’m I’m not saying like Derek Queen is just Derek Queen could be anybody, right? Like this is what you should be practicing. You should be able to replicate this look against anyone. Nice. I like the shot, bro. I got a I got a bit of an issue I got a bit of an issue with it. And I don’t have an issue with the shot. I have a I have an issue with the the the Just ignore me for a second. No, no, no. You Yeah, you good. I got I got an issue with how he didn’t use the rub because if he’d have ran it a little tighter. You talking shouldertosh shoulder here. Talking shoulder to shoulder. Cut it off. Cut it off. Why you going that wide? They don’t even you you messing up the screen. It’s not terrible, but it’s not terrible. But I will say this. So look at And well, what do you also have? The Trey shot’s great. You have your big backpedaling. If you hit this pocket pass, Queen’s got this and he’s got Scion James come over and then you have the Sadi Bay corner shot like then you have to put James and now you’re putting James in a twoon-one situation just because of this action. Yeah, he’s a low man. I’m not mad at the shot though. I think the shot shot’s great. Shot’s perfect. I’m just I’m just saying, you know, that if there was a second option to this And I I and all I’m saying is just run it a run it a little a little bit tighter. Run. Yeah, that’s fair. Good shot from Trey. Oh, and then queen. Same. Here we go. Now we got a back. I was telling you about Justin. All right, Jared. Hello, K. We got to talk about this real quick. All right. What’s up, Con? So, we get Let me label it for them. So, pass the queen. Trey will back screen for Jose and then be a dribble handoff for Trey. That’s what the set’s supposed to look like. Okay. Go ahead, Jar. And look, look at I mean, you just go back to the initial. That’s the the true problem in this. Look at where Derek Queen has to catch this damn basketball. Why is he Yeah. Why is he doing that? Because Jose got Hey, I give you praise. I got to be able to critique you as well. You picked up your dribble, man. Don’t pick up your dribble, bro. Good point, five. Point five. I did not catch that. That’s why Derek Queen is out of position. Right now, when he catches the angle that’s going to be created, right? Okay. It It’s not as good as it was. So, now I got to dribble in. I’m off rhythm. Oh, now I got to I should have been able to make that pass earlier. But if I would have caught it at the elbow like I should have. Oh, I’m there. I don’t I can anticipate it. I can better anticipate it. So, why do I love this set? Uh, I’m just gonna say I love this set, Jared. We talk about this all the time. Shooters, in order to get open, a shooter should be a good back screener. You talk about this all the time. Watch Bridges on Trey. He sets this back screen. Bridges does not leave Trey in the game plan. Trey is the best shooter on the team. Don’t leave him. So, when you back screen defenders, Miles Bridges job is not to leave Trey. So, who does that free up? Jose, go ahead. All you know, I’mma die on the hill. That That was a good pass. Jose got to stop. You wide open. You got to understand. Hey, you got He’s talking like a big He’s talking like a big You got to understand where you at. All right. Hey, hey, let me ask y’all this. If you get behind the defense, if I’m behind the defense, there’s no defender by me. Why are you Where where you going? Where else you going? You got to live. Going the hoop. Oh, that’s that’s the that’s the cutter’s fault that I’m open. Okay, let me ask you. Let me ask you this. Look at where Jose is. Look at his feet. He’s still running. He at no point never stop. If I’m the passer, I’m looking at you though. You create the angle. You If you see me running and you’re late because he’s late on the pass. He’s late. He is. The pass wasn’t accurate. It wasn’t accurate. So again, if you know throw there, he couldn’t throw right there. He could have threw it to the same side block where Jose was running to and Jose could have I don’t think he could though. I don’t think he could. He has an angle. He’s going to the left block, right? He running to the left block. You You ain’t hold it long enough for him to keep running. You threw Look, you threw it behind him. The pass the pass wasn’t accurate. But I’m saying also if in this case, Jose, you compared him to Tom Brady. I’m going to say if Jose is Grank in this situation, right, when you when they play in the zone, Grank is going to sit in a spot behind that ain’t a zone though. This ain’t a zone. This manto man. No, no, no. I know. But I’m saying in this in this instance in this instance if you are Jose’s is open you you got to you got to stop you got to slow down a little bit and let me you know what I’m saying like it’s just just the nuance of the of the of of the pass. I don’t know I’m protect let’s talk about uh some defense. So Derek Queen Leo talk to me about big to big defense here guarding the post. Uh so Maverick shot get him on ice on the left block against Gaffford. You you mentioned something earlier. You mentioned something earlier about how his balance and how he has a good base, right? So, G watch boom that Go ahead, Justin. I’m sorry, but like he didn’t go nowhere. And the funny part is look at where look at where the ball landed. Look, Gaffford lost it. Justin, that bed is a tree trunk. That’s a stump right there. He didn’t move. And all right, so let’s talk about this, Jared. This is what I was telling you about. No, they were gu remember how Charlotte was guarding you. So you saw a foul. Yeah. What’ I miss? Hey rock. Yeah. Once you once Justin once I get the once I get the basketball, we cross the half court and I go between my I’m dribbling between my legs and then I and then I hop. Oh, it’s Oh, you you cook. Watch this. Watch this. Tell me where to stop. Go ahead. Right here. Look how you do it. Boom. Hop. Hop. Now watch the bop. Watch the bomb. Justin, watch the box. Boop. You could you you’re done. When Derek Queen knew what he was going to do, he when he got the rebound, dog, and he put that [ __ ] between his legs and he sucked. Oh, yeah. You You done, brother. So Jared, I pointed this out last night. I’m just saying it is important about space, too. If Hawk is here, just say Hawk’s around here. Naji can guard, too. He can stunt recover, right? But the fact that Hawkins is somewhat near to the corner gives Queen all of this runway to go. Yeah. And so I thought the spacing here was was really good from the uh from the Pelicans. PJ Washington is just just watching. Oh yeah. Yeah. I I would want Hulk deeper in the corner. Way deeper. He That’s what I was saying. He He did enough. He did enough Jared. He should be is that like where Peavey is. That’s where Hawk should be. Hawkins still doesn’t do this very well. Yeah. As as Queen starts to drive, he should drop. You supposed to float. Yeah. That Zoom action we talked about Hawkins, man. Hawkins killed me here. He about to He about to fall on his face. Watch Queen though. Activity motor. Hey, motor. Talk to me about this. All right, Lita, talk to me about this. Come on. The the the way look go Hold on. We got Because you got to go back. You got to go You got to go back a little bit. You got to think of You got to look at the patience right there. You got to look at the patience. He knew he was setting the pick, right? But he had to wait for fears to get set. Okay. Right. The patience. Boom. I’mma set. Okay. I does the IQ enough to I have I really have no role right here. You got what’s my man Cooper in the corner? Gaffford still has a little bit of drop. Christy here. Cooper here. I can’t really roll, but I can take advantage of this because now it’s it’s twoonone. I thought he would rip through here. What What is he thinking right there? What’s he thinking? He thinking Gaffford realizes he’s out of position and thought he would cut off here. He should have went right. But yeah, but he’s so crafty. He just dri He was going to spin. He was going to spin. Oh, he he was Yeah, he was eventually going to get back. He was eventually going to get back that way or either he was going to, you know what I’m saying? He he was going over the top. Um, can we I just want I’m going to play this through. Good hands. I thought I had the uh the queen footwork in, but I don’t. But look at this. straight up gone and he got fouled. That’s defense, man. People He’s a good defender, man. Rim protect rim protection looks different than different people. The rim was still protected on that play. Yeah. All right. So, you remember where the big for Charlotte was guarding, right? He’s like around here. Look at where Gaffford is now. You better bring your ass up. So, what do you what is that Jarrett? So, just I don’t know if you’ve seen this play. Do you have any idea what happens here, Jar? Yeah, it’s a spin, right? No, no, no. I I was So, you have no idea what happens here, huh? No, I don’t I don’t either. I’ll let it play. All because space Gaffford can’t drop into that space. So, what does Trey do? they’ll pick her and and people will see this and be like, “Uh, well, he probably should because Queen’s not a great shooter, so you should just let him shoot.” Well, no. The reason why you have to pressure the basketball because he’s a good passer. Like, people think you have to be you’re a threat from the outside only if you can shoot. Like, no. You saw the last game he was killing Charlotte because he had ample amount of room to pass. Now they’re trying to cut off the passing and he’s that’s allows Trey Murphy to come off a curl screen and get a bucket. I think I think the other thing um too in that sense of Queen it’s much like Zion like he attacking space. You you can’t just give me space. I’m going I’m going to I’m if you give it to me, I’m going to attack it. I’m just not going to leave the space empty. I’m gonna fill my presence with the space. Yeah. Yeah. That’s what I like about it. I don’t know what uh Damn, my [ __ ] thing is tripping. But that was basically the end of it. Um so like back to like what y’all were just like kind of talking about like we’ll wrap it up here. Um, what just seeing just seeing Derek Quinn over his last two nights, Gerald the leader, like what do you think moving forward like how the Pelicans should use him? And do you think if Zion does get healthy that these two can work because I keep seeing that uh that that conversation, you know, well, you know, Queen can just take over Zion. Like why can’t Zion can Zion and Queen work through four quarters and especially during crunch time? Think about it. I think Derek can give Zion the relief of pressure of having to get everybody involved. Let Derk Queen do that. Play through him. It’s not saying like he’s the number one option, right? No. Is Draymond Green the number one option in Golden State? No. No. So just allow Durk Queen to do that. Be what he good at. And he’s a really good passer from the high post, which is an area that you need to feel, right? And his presence makes people have to guard that, which will allow Zion to finally have one-on-one. It makes sense. I think why why are we over not this is not to you, but like why are we overthinking this? Like Derek Queen is a is a Derek Queen is a is a basketball player who has played with talent before and you know played on the number one high school team in the country with the number I think he with the number one two I think there was top three top 10 players in the country on that team something like that like why wouldn’t he be able to play with Zion Williamson Zion is smart also like Zion is crafty with the basketball he can he knows how to you know like what to do I think the problem is Zion hasn’t played play with talent. So people don’t think that he can do those type of things. When I say he hasn’t played with talent, I mean a talent like Queen. It’s it’s he’s a unique talent. It’s not like there wasn’t three there wasn’t like three NBA level players on his high school basketball team. Right. Right. You know what I’m saying? And I think I think I think the whole thing I was talking to somebody on the timeline earlier, bro. I think the whole thing with Derek Queen is people just overthink it. They overthink everything. You know, the game is really simple. Derek Queen plays him in a simple way. He doesn’t do anything extravagant. He doesn’t play outside of his means. It’s I it’s it’s kind of like what we want Trey to do, right? Simplify the game. Like simplify the game. Just be yourself. Do what got you there. You know, you talked about this a couple weeks ago. Um and I I agree. Derek Queen is hated by nerds. Yeah. That’s that’s what the you know NBA Twitter is loved by like they love um you know Yeah. the numbers that dictate Yeah. Oh my god. He can jump out the gym but he needs to shoot 40% from three. But like basketball isn’t played in a [ __ ] vacuum. Isn’t played on a on a Sorry, Con. Um like it’s not played on a stat sheet or an Excel sheet. It doesn’t those two don’t compute like yeah use the data to kind of you know tell a story but not the complete and the whole story. You don’t use that to make all of your decisions. It should compound what your eyes are telling you. That’s it man. I was just I’m so glad you said that Jarrett because like it’s so refreshing to see you know basketball’s all like how you know think of like VJ Edgecomb and you think of you know when Zion was drafted and all these other he’s so athletic. He’s this, he plays above the rim, he’s a high flyer. It’s like I like a dude like Queen who slows it down and can read a defense and is under control and has balance. Of course, the athleticism is great, but you don’t need to have, you know, pick a quarter off the top of the backboard. You just got to have an IQ. Like, you got to be able just to read and scan a floor. And that that’s the beauty like I’m glad you brought up Tom Brady. Tom Brady won the most athletic. Tom Brady didn’t have the best arm. Tom Brady didn’t. But man, his mental, his mindset, his IQ is seeing a play before the, you know, before it happened. I really feel like Queen does this. So Derek Queen is like watching a master painter at work. Derek Queen has counters to your your move. He has counters to your defense. Step throughs rip 611 doing euros. Could finish with either either hand. one-legged fadeaways Allah Durk where he’s just I I I don’t see Derek Queen getting sped up. You can’t rush him. He knows who he is. The The most important thing we talk about this all the time, F identity. You credit to you. You talk about identity and and who who you are, right? Derek Queen knows who he is. Well, he’s got confidence in himself, too. That’s another thing. He he’s confident. So, um, we’ll start doing this probably once a week with I love this panel with Jared and Leo. They they definitely bring a a different set of eyes and eye to this, uh, film session. So, we really appreciate it. Um, also in the comments, guys, if y’all want us to go over certain players. Um, I think once a week, this is fun, so we can keep doing more of this. So, make sure you smash the like button. We’ll see y’all um depending on if the Pelicans win Saturday, maybe Saturday night, but definitely Sunday night. So, holl at y’all. Appreciate it.
