Um, today we’re going to be talking about the Sharks two to one victory over the Winnipeg Jets. Why this is such a big deal uh as the Sharks have now gone gotten points in five straight games. Uh, are now over 500 for the first time since March 2022 or at least at 500 for the first time since March 2022. Minelbrini also uh leads the NHL in points. Alex Adelkovich. Uh, massive game and dig into the numbers as this Sharks team thoroughly beat this Winnipeg Jets team. But before we get to all that, do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Download the FanDuel app now by visiting fanduel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. Um, I’m so happy right now. Like so happy. Uh because the past several years has been so much pain and losing and just right like how many anybody who’s who’s listened to the show for you know more than a year right and just how many times have we’ve had to go on here and talk try to find you know little gems to talk about as the Sharks lose you know five to two and uh like as you’re you’re going through this rebuild and you’re, you know, just cru like just brutal losses night in night out and now all this is starting to wash away and like the Sharks team it’s it’s not done, right? There’s there’s still things that that they need to figure out and work on and you know you’d like to see more pieces on the blue line, etc., etc., But you are seeing this team grow up before your eyes and not just you know be this what I you know this one hit wonder type of thing right you are seeing what is going to be sustainable success and why why you went through all those losses and why you drafted high and why like Mike Greer’s vision kind of starting to come to fruition and this Sharks team it’s starting to happen. Um, tonight was a a massive win for the franchise, right? Um, getting back to 500 hockey for the first time since March 2022. Um, it has been that long since these Sharks playing 500 hockey. Um, like that is that is ridicul. Like just think about that. March 2022, uh, when they lost to the Arizona Coyotes to get back, it was like 2929 and like five or something like that. I forget what the the record was, but that was the last time this team got was playing like 500 hockey. And now look, we’re again plenty and like the Sharks could dip back down to 500 tomorrow when they play below 500 when they play the the Florida Panthers. But it’s just you you’ve seen this team go through so much the last few years and with the hopes that you get to pick some of these guys and they turn out to be the right guys and they right and still it’s a long way to go but this team is is kicked down the door of being of this rebuild right this this is not a rebuilding team anymore. This is now a building team. This is a team that is going to sooner than later start competing for playoff positioning and sooner than later start competing for championships because of how the the pain that we’ve gone through over the past couple years. And I think this was this breakout moment for this team of learning from some of these lessons, right? And how many times over the past year especially where the Sharks would be in a position to win and then they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and tonight they you you saw them exercising some of those demons, right? Um and again an excellent gem of a hockey game. Gem of a hockey game between these two teams here. Um but right you Will Smith gets the the tying goal with four minutes left and how many times have we seen the Sharks you know get a goal late or get a goal in the third period and then they have to defend and they’re not able to hold on and tonight they held on. I mean Alexandovich was awesome. We’ll talk about Naduk in the second uh segment here, but you saw the young guys, right? M Celerbrini just continuing to lead the way and not only lead the way in points in the NHL, but putting this team on his back again when the Sharks needed him most. He gets his teeth knocked out, right? He’s got the he’s got the the the chip and the teeth, the tooth. Um, you know, and the Sharks like you knew like he that just he found another gear after that and getting the goal on Hell Buck and like Hellbuck if it wasn’t for Hellob the Sharks like win this game like four to one. Like Hell Buck was ridiculous tonight. Um, but that move that he puts on Hellbuck on the breakaway and he’s got Morsy who’s a an excellent defender draped on his back. He’s still able to get the, you know, like get the forehand backhand on Hella Buck. um just ridiculous move and then gets the primary assists on the Will Smith goal to put him one to put the Sharks in the lead and two to put him o back in the lead with uh over Connor Baddard who Conor Baddard had a great night and like the NHL is in amazing hands if you’re going to have Baddard and Celibbrini for the next you know 15 years potentially like doing what they’re doing right now um the NHL is in excellent hands with what they’re doing But um just like and it’s right it’s it’s Will Smith with a game-winning goal there. Uh Will Smith had an excellent night tonight. Like he could have had probably two goals easily two goals tonight. But again Connor Halabuk’s pretty good at hockey. Um you just all these pieces Colin Graph was was outstanding tonight as well uh with his the role that he was given. Uh, and just this breaking out moment that we’ve seen over the past kind of couple the past week or so where the Sharks team figuring things out, right? What did Elliot Freiedman said? If the Sharks team ever learns to defend, watch out. The Sharks team is learning how to defend. And they did it tonight. and especially against this high-powered Jets team who if you watched to the previous show I said the Sharks should be able to take advantage because they’re scoring above expectations and tonight they weren’t a Alexandovich was absolutely lights out tonight and the Sharks were able to you know uh were able to push the play and like when I say push the play the like this is not something that you you see from San Jose Sharks typically um if If you’re watching on YouTube, here is the shot attempts at five on five. Um, and if you’re listening, I will explain it. Basically, it’s it’s very even between the Sharks and the Jets until about midway through the second period where like it’s pretty even like each team would have their kind of flurries where they would take over and stuff like that at the shot attempts, right? And shot attempts are usually good indicator of one possession and who’s controlling the pace, right? Because you’re getting shot attempts off. But around halfway through the second period, the Sharks just find another gear and then they are controlling the shot attempts um until they it peaks when they score that Will Smith goal. Of course, then right the Jets are going to push back. But this is this right here leads you to believe that this offense can be special. Again, this is a an excellent excellent Winnipeg Jets team. Um, who won the President’s Trophy last year, uh, is expected to be a a a cup contender this year. And the Sharks controlled this game. They controlled this game. And again, if it wasn’t for Connor Hobbuk, who was absolutely ridiculous tonight. Uh just quickly Connor Hella Buck like to give him his flowers cuz he was insane. Uh yeah, 25 saves on 27 shots with the Sharks having 13 high danger shots. Uh he had 3.29 expected goals against and the Sharks scored two. So um yeah, this big moment for San Jose. Big moment for San Jose. So, uh, we’re going to give flowers to Nadelovich and some of the other guys here who Nadulkovich absolutely like kept the Sharks in this when they needed some big-time saves. Uh, and and the Sharks goalending has really found its footing here, uh, between Nadulkovich and and Ascarov. And we’re going to talk about Nadulkovich here, uh, in just one second. Let’s be real, making excuses doesn’t solve anything. We’ve heard them all before. is just stress. I’m tired. It happens to everyone sometimes. I’ve been living in their performance denim straight jeans and honestly they’ve completely changed the game for me. I love my Der jeans because one, they look great. At least my wife tells me they look great and that’s what matters. But two, they’re super comfy. They have five times the stretch of traditional denim. They feel stretchy. They don’t look stretchy, which is important, right? Uh, Derer combines classic jeansear style with the kind of comfort and performance you get from athletic wear. It’s the best of both worlds. There’s a reason why they call them the world’s most comfortable pants. But don’t take my word for it. Go try on a pair for yourself. [Music] All right, before we continue do of course want to thank you for making Lock on Sharks your first listen. again, part of the Locked On podcast network, the number one podcast network. Uh so, of course, we’re going to be reacting to Every Sharks Game. Uh so, make sure you guys have following along for that. We’ll have uh Barracuda coverage as well. Uh we got something special lined up for next week with Joe Thornton’s uh uh induction into the Hall of Fame. So, be on the lookout for that for Monday. Uh so, plenty of great stuff coming here at Locked On uh Sharks. Make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast. And of course you can watch on YouTube as well. So uh Alex Nad and Delulkovich tonight um has and this both goalies Nadulkovich and Ascarov have really found their footing uh the past couple weeks here and has been a big part of why this Sharks team has uh played much better. But the Dulkovich tonight uh was absolutely locked in. uh he made some massive saves, especially early, like some of those high danger chances that the Jets were able to get uh that he shut down, right? And this this power play, which is, you know, a top 10 power play was the best power play in the NHL last year. Um he was like, “Not today, guys. Not today.” And even the one goal that was scored was like an absolute missile from Morrisy from the blue line. That was just scream. like he just didn’t like no chance on that one. No chance. But some of the other saves that he made tonight were huge. Especially a couple short-handed chances that the Jets got. Um and that’s what you need. Like this the Sharks team, they’re going to live and die with their offense. We know that, right? They’re an offensive team and you’re sometimes you’re going to put your goalies out to dry. But Nadulkovich, he stood tall tonight when when San Jose needed him. Uh 31 saves on 32 shots, one goal allowed. 347 expected goals against and again one goal allowed. 969 save percentage, 12 of 12 on high danger shots, 44 on mid- danger, and then 12 of 13 on low danger shots tonight. Um this was the Alexandovich that you hope for uh when the Sharks, you know, traded for him, right? It’s still like Ascrov’s net, but just the goalending. Like if the Sharks, as we’ve said a bunch of times, right, if the Sharks can get like average goalending, this is going to be a good team, a dangerous team, in fact. And if you get nights like tonight where Nadulkovich stands on his head against one of the best teams in the NHL and Ascarov continues to play really well as you know with the exception of the Kings game but like over the past two or weeks now um Nadul or Ascarov’s been playing really well like this Sharks team is going to be in a lot of games and give a lot of teams uh a lot of trouble and what they’ve done and again it’s not like this this team has played bad like you know they’re not stacking points against bad teams. These are really good teams that the Sharks are are getting points against. Um you know this they’ve got Winnipeg team, you know, they they handed Seattle uh like their lunch money there, right? You went to a shootout against the Detroit team which was, you know, one of the top teams in in the NHL, you know, in their division. Uh where’s Detroit? I’m looking at the standings right now. Detroit’s number two um in the Atlantic right now. You did this against Colorado, which is arguably the best team in the NHL. You did this new against New Jersey, which was coming off a six game or an eightgame win streak. um like wait the big test will be when they start to like get some of these like how this how mature this team is um is when you start to kind of play some of the like I don’t want to say below you because the Sharks are still below a lot of teams right now but when you start to kind of face those teams that you should win against and see how you do against those teams that you should win against because That’s the That’s the mark of a mature team. But um yeah, Nadulkovich tonight was was was ridiculous. Like absolutely ridiculous. And I’m Yes, I’m so happy for this team. Like everything just starting to click into place. Um and a lot of it because of the goalending can bailing you out when you make some mistakes, right? Because this like this team is still going to make mistakes. But if you can get solid goalending as you’ve gotten from Nadelkovich tonight, as you’ve gotten from Asgrav the couple nights, you know, the past couple games, it seems going to go a lot further than I think a lot of us thought they could. And I I’m not going to say the P word yet. I’m not going to say the P word yet, but this team could could be in the mix maybe a little bit longer than than we expected to. And then you start to think about it back to games that you might like if Nulovich doesn’t, you know, lose his mind for five minutes against the against Vegas and if the Sharks can hold on to a lead against the Ducks and stuff like that. Like then you start you start to think about points that that you left on the table. But um yeah, this this team, man, this is a a really fun team that is really starting to figure things out here. And uh it’s it’s good to see the goalending not hold this team back because this team has been with the exception of McKenzie Blackwood, this team has at times been held back by their their goalending and they are uh yes, they’re they’re getting they’re getting their act together. So uh we’re going to dig into the numbers of this game. Uh I want to talk about the second line, the Wenberg line, which was absolutely fantastic tonight. even though uh like the numbers may not be super in their favor. Actually, the numbers aren’t too bad, but that that line was given a tough assignment tonight and they came through despite not getting any points. Uh so, we’re going to talk about the Wenberg line. We’re going to talk about how every player did um in this game and John Clingberg best game in teal. So, we’ll get to that here in just one second. Uh before we finish up, do of course want to thank you for making Locked on Sharks your first listen. If you haven’t yet, you need to go check out the Locked On NHL game night. Uh they cover every game every night until Stanley Cup champion is crowned. Get local analysis on national scale. Find NHL game night on locked on NHL on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcasts. So um let’s dig into the numbers because this game was uh this is really fun. It’s really fun to talk about winning hockey. Like it’s it’s it’s been so long, guys. It’s been so long. All right. Um, in this game we had 46 minutes of five on five time. Uh, Sharks 59.34% Corsy4 they had 54 to 37 shot attempts. Actual shots on goal at five on five. Uh, was 21-19 in favor of the Sharks. Scoring chances for 29-13, 13 to7 high danger chances. Uh Sharks at five on five, 2.35 expected goals, four to 1.56. Of course, both goals coming at 515. This Sharks team, like if Hella Buck wasn’t Hella Buck, this has the makings of a 4 to one, 5 to one type of of of win because of the way they were playing tonight. Um right, 29 scoring chances, 13 high danger chances. Uh in that second period, like I said, where they really took off. 26 to 15 shot attempts and even in the third period right where it’s a tied game and you like the Jets came out for like a minute or two kind of pushed the pace and then the Sharks responded you know 16 to9 uh shot attempts at five on five uh that’s when you know the game is is tied or the Sharks have the lead there they were pushing the pace trying to find that that gamewinner uh 5 to1 high danger chances in the in the third period alone. 10 to1 uh scoring chances for the Sharks in the third period.59 to.13 expected goals four um right going out and actively looking for this win uh and then and trying to put it away and that that those are great signs for this Sharks team as they are you know actively maturing in front of our eyes and becoming uh you know this team that we hopefully expect them to be. So, um, Kersev, Wberg, Graph played 1203 tonight and they were given the tough assignment of the Shifley line. You know, for the most part, this as often as as Worski could, he put this line out. If you watch the preview episode, I specifically spoke to how does this line perform against that line with the Kersha Wood graph line because there that is a massive assignment to take on you know Kyle Connor Shifley I follow like that is a a tough assignment and this line was excellent tonight 12 to 11 shot attempts six to six actual shots four to.58 expected goals four six to six scoring chances three to three high danger chances is um nine defensive zone starts for this line. Nine defensive zone starts and you’re still getting that type of offensive volume. Speaks to how well this line is working. And when Aquin gets back, oh baby. Oh baby. So uh Will Smith celebrating to fully played 1016 12 to six shot attempts, six-2 uh actual shots had the goal four.25 to 0.21 expected goals. four six and three scoring chances, 3 to1 high danger chances. Um, see in that right there, you have the Wberg line doing their job of shutting down the strikely line and then that allows Celabbrini and Smith and Tofoley to go out and do what they do best, right? And that is score goals. Uh, like excellent excellent work from from everybody involved there. Um, Skinner, Danger, and Cardwell tonight. Uh, well, really actually before we do that. So, um, couple guys like I wanted to shout out here. Like I said, Will Smith, excellent game tonight. Was all over it. And I don’t know if you noticed, but empty net situation. Will Smith is out there trying to help kill the game. I don’t like I noticed that. I noticed that. Uh, again, Colraph was great tonight. again like you saw that Johnny on the spot with him where he’s, you know, exact right place where the puck is going to go. He’s always there. Um he had a couple opportunities tonight as well. Um Kersev, great work on the game-winning goal there, right, to kind of drive deep and then get the uh puck to Smith and, you know, work its way around there. But um like everybody in this top six pulled their weight tonight. So, uh, actually, well, everybody pulled their weight throughout this game. Skinner Dandra Cardwell, um, Ethan Cardwell, I’m going to start with Cardwell. Uh, just I love watching Ethan Cardwell play hockey. Like, he can be on my hockey team any day, uh, any day of the week. He again knows his role. He’s very good at it. Um, you know, helps the drive offense, had a couple chances, is not afraid to shoot, right? Like that’s a big thing is just not afraid to pull the trigger there. Uh when he needs, you know, like when it’s when he has a chance, he’s going to pull the trigger. And I don’t there’s a clip going around on on Twitter where, you know, with the empty net situation, uh the Sharks trying to defend the lead. Cabbrini has his his helmet knocked off. He gets back to the bench. Cardwell gives Celabbrini his helmet so Celbrini can go back out there. Uh yes. Yes. Um Ethan Cardwell like again he is going to be a beloved player in the bottom six for the Sharks for hopefully a very long time. Uh Dandria continually looked good. Skinner I thought had his his a great game tonight despite again like he’s so close to breaking through and I but Skinner was all over the ice tonight. Even the fourth line here uh oh sorry the landria line uh they played 819 seven to eight shot attempts two to three actual shots 38 to point2 expected goals four four to2 uh scoring chances two to2 high danger chances so this that third line right creating some big time moments for you uh then the goodro godette reeves played 455 uh seven to four shot attempts one to four actual shots uh 0 to one goals allowed 23 to 09 expected goals for three to one scoring chances and one to nothing high danger chances. Goodro with an opportunity on the penalty kill and almost gets one behind uh Hella Buck there. Godette uh had a scary moment there where he took a puck off the face from Goodro but came back which is good to see. Uh like again Godet I I love having God here just because of the scoring that he provides in the bottom six. Uh, and Reeves had, you know, he like had that big-time play on Tae where he, you know, comes in on the forche there and Ta has to get rid of the puck, which leads to the puck over glass and the Sharks get that power play late and they build off of that. Um, like this, you know, all four lines tonight contributing, which is uh what you love to see. Uh defensively uh for the Sharks uh Ferraro led the way uh with Corsy4 percentage at 72%. John Clingberg 68.5%. Uh Clingberg’s best game in teal by far. Um like just looked more engaged in both defensive zone and the offensive zone. Just making smarter passes. You weren’t seeing him just kind of turn over pucks and stuff as much tonight. Uh just a a much better performance from from John Clingberg tonight. Uh Lilligrren 58.62. Uh he got shaken up a little bit. I wonder if I know he’s a right-handed, but if Dickinson’s coming in tomorrow, I would sit Ligren for a day and just let him like he’s had a rough week here. So maybe just give him the day off. Uh and especially with a couple days off before the Sharks play again on Tuesday. That’s you know what I would do. But what do I know? So, uh, Orlav 53%, I thought Orlav was strong again tonight. Muk Madullan 50%. You just you see the confidence growing with Muk Magdullan. And again, it’s there’s I don’t think it’s a coincidence since Muk Madan’s return, the Sharks have gotten much better defensively. Um, he’s he’s been doing very well for for San Jose. The day is kind of the quiet unsung hero. Just goes out there and does his job at 46%. So, um, great job all around. Like, I’m super excited. And then the problem is, right, you play the Jets, who was the best team in, you know, the regular season last year. You turn around, you got to play the two-time defending champion Florida Panthers. Uh, so yeah, let’s see if the Sharks can get over 500 here. So, uh, we’ll be back tomorrow. So, we’ll have a preview, get to know the Panthers, uh, see how this team is doing without all their stars, uh, and if the Shark where the Sharks can maybe take advantage. And of course, we’ll have a reaction uh Saturday night to this game. So, make sure you follow along wherever you get podcast. And of course, you can watch on YouTube as well. Follow the show on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and on Tik Tok at locked on Sharks. Follow me on Twitter and Blue Sky Fryhole. Till tomorrow. Bye, friends.
