Make your picks and assemble a same game parlay in seconds on the FanDuel Sportsbook app. Frozen frenzy. 16 games, 32 NHL teams playing today on a Tuesday in October opposite the World Series. Opposite the World Series where the Blue Jays and the Dodgers, two of the biggest hockey markets out there, are playing in it. But it’s all good. I’m curious how many celebrities show up for the Dodger game tonight. Mary Hart will be there for sure, right? She is so dialed in. like she doesn’t move, doesn’t get up, doesn’t stand, she doesn’t leave. She just sits there and watches every single pitch with intensity. I have a lot of appreciation for that. Magic made it through the whole game. I think I saw Bill Simmons there last night. Jason Baitman. Was Baitman there? I think Sean Hayes was there. Oh, yeah. His smart list partner. There you go. Was Will Arnett there? I did not see him. If Will Arnett was there, doesn’t he have to be repping the Blue Jays? Like he’s Mr. Toronto, right? Yeah. You said Bieber was there. Bieber was there with uh Haley as well. Their celebs kind of top the Toronto Celebs pretty handily. Yeah, we had Drake in a Rob Ford jacket. Eugene Levy. Was Eugene there for one of the first two games? I believe I didn’t see Getty Lee. He was there in the Seattle series. Getty Lee was there in Seattle. Okay. Because I’ve been at every game, so I don’t know who’s in the park. That’s a nice flex by you. Whatever. All right. And I’ve got a four anytime goal scorer parlay. This is paying plus 3200. Nice. Austin Matthews scoring tonight. Nice. Okay. Pav Dorov, who Mitch Mner thinks might be the best goal scorer he’s ever played with. Dorov, I think he has seven goals already. He’s he’s got a lethal shot. And I’m I’m joking a little bit, but Mitch was pumping his tires like he should. His line, his teammate loves Dora. Sure, you would say Matthews is the best goal scorer he’s ever played with. I would think he would say that. David Paster anytime goal scorer tonight. And Alex Ovetkin, anytime goal scorer, right, I’m playing the hits here. Yeah, but it’s paying plus 3200. This is the night. I like it. Get after it. Best bets powered by FanDuel. Same game parlays now available on this frozen frenzy on the FanDuel sportsbook app. Please play responsibly. 19 plus physically located in Ontario. Game four of the World Series tonight. What do you see happening this evening? I’m still so fascinated to see what they do with the lineup. Like, we don’t know about Springer. He’s hour to hour. I can’t picture him playing. I can’t either. So, what do they do? They DH Bashette. Mhm. Who bats lead off? How do they attack Otani? How does Otani pitch? How does everyone look? How do the bullpens look? Well, you got to think Lowour is not an option tonight. No, but maybe Basset can Basset’s been awesome since like he’s become like their eighth D guy. He’s been great. Yeah, very good. I fell for um Brendan Little last night. Yeah, you knew that was going to happen. Like he takes the loss. Yes. He’s the guy on the mound. He g the first he gave him the 17th inning. Pitched very well. Yeah. Gave them like kept them alive. Allow the bats to come up again and then he’s got to face Freddy Freeman. And it just was never going to happen. Once they once they didn’t score in the top of that inning, there was no chance Little was getting out of that one scot-free. He wasn’t giving you two clean innings. It’s asking too much. It’s kind of remarkable like how far he’s kind of dropped down the depth chart that he was used in that situation last series and now he’s like literally the last guy they used. It’s I don’t know. It tells you like where that they’re at with him as well. Right. Right. The highest leverage you could ever be in game five against Seattle. Yeah. And you run Brendan Little out. And now you reluctantly pitch him because you have no other option. In the 18th inning. In the 18th inning, game three of the World Series, which if you’re not ever going to use him, why is he even on the roster? Like you had to use him last night. Guess cuz he’s a lefty. I guess you know another lefty. And like Rodriguez wasn’t going to pitch cuz he’s been terrible. Yeah. And Flu Hardy’s like Flu Hardy couldn’t get them out of that jam when Sherzer came in came out of the game last night. Couldn’t anyway either lefty. Yeah. No, I know. Let’s see what we got tonight. It’s fun. It’s fun to look forward to these games. Game four of the World Series, man. Show Atani. It It’s amazing. Leaf game to start. The Leafs will lift everyone up in Toronto. Sure. That’s their reputation. Lease roll tonight to make sure everyone feels good. I can feel it coming. All right, Jonas. Good seeing you. Thanks to everyone behind the scenes for helping out. Last week’s trouble started with a 4-3 overtime loss to Seattle on a Saturday night. A week later, the Leafs snapped out of it with a 4-3 overtime win over the Buffalo Sabres. Both games here at Scotia Bank Arena. So, is this the start of a good week? Does John Tvar score his 500th career goal tonight? Some of the pregame questions, but what you really want to know is how it unfolds. Well, let’s find out. Molen Canadian Leafs hockey starts now. It’s time for Molson Canadian Leafs hockey on TSN 1050 and the Leafs radio network. The Leafs live here. Oh, yes, they do. Welcome back inside Scotia Bank Arena. Calgary Flames visiting here against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jim Tatty and former NHLer Anthony Stewart with you and uh Joe Bon and Jimmy Ralph standing by and we just have the lineup handed to us. So Stu, as we speculated earlier, Austin Matthews centering Nelander and McMahon, Tvaring Machelli and Ny W centering Easton Cowan and Dakota Joshua Max Doy centering Nick Robertson and Steven Loren the blue line. Riley Meyers McKay Benois Oel and Brandon Carlo and Anthony Stolar starts in goal. So Knlanders in on the top line that’s big. Yeah, that’s good. They’re going to be uh they missed his services last game, too. But again, he’s a guy that again when moving, pushing the pace, uh he dominates a majority of his shifts there, too. And again, let’s look for him to maybe find Austin Matthews to get him uh you know, putting the puck in the back of the net. Uh McMahon’s a racehorse out there as well, too. And you I’d like to maybe throw some flowers to the John Tvaris line. I I know we talked about Tvaris individually, but I think they had a net positive game last game uh last couple uh last game versus the the Buffalo Sabres. Machelli’s now starting to find his rhythm and get to the net and make plays as well, too. Uh I I really like Dakota Joshua’s game the last couple games. So it’s now, you know, regardless of the the sum of the parts, each team, each line is sort of bringing their value to the team uh in their each individual way and starting to sort itself out. East count, we haven’t mentioned him. That’s a good thing, right? We’re not noticing him with any turnovers, anything negative. It’s going to take him some time to sort of find his rhythm as well, too. Uh but again, Max Doi, that’s a guy now. he can be a differencemaker and when he’s skating, making plays, um, and not catching minuses, he can be an effective member of this team, too. And that line, uh, they’ll probably match up against the Lombberg line. He’ll probably be running around. I think they could take advantage of the Calgary’s fourth line with some of their play. So, look for them to be a key tonight for me. Okay, here’s a question to wrap it all up. Matthew Ny, what’s the difference between Matthew N playing with Austin Matthews or with John Travaris? Um, I would say Matthews has some uh tendencies that can be uh a little bit different, right? He he finds different routes. He gets to different holes. Uh he does little pocket pass plays, little give and goes where Tavvaris, you could close your eyes and you’ll you you’ll see him, you’ll hear him, you’ll smell him. You you’ll his senses are a lot more you know exactly where he’s going to be. So more consistent as opposed to creative. Yes. And and I think that’s what Matthew N. He’s a straight line guy. gets to the net, taps in really great depth scoring touch in front of the net, too. So, again, I think NY it doesn’t necessarily affect his game, but I think he can have a little bit more chemistry with Tamaris and it was a good game last game with him. I’m noticing now the players have yet to hit the ice and normally they’re on at this point and because this is an early start, it’s a little a little fractured, frozen frenzy day in the NHL with all 32 teams playing and this was always going to be an early start regardless of the other situation. Uh, so in in terms of of what you’re seeing out of the lease, I’m going to squeeze in another question because I think we have some time. Um, I think we wanted more at this point, didn’t we? I mean, we’re only nine games in, but but we wanted a better look. Yeah, I was trying to find some holes. Um, again, I think finishing a little bit better. Eight games, only eight third period goals, right? Where I think their starts were a little bit uh inconsistent last year. So, again, there’s a little bit little bit missing out there. What is where’s the beef guy? Where’s the beef out there? Uh, with regards to this team, too. But again, it does take some time. There’s a lot of expectations, but we’ll see. Again, it’s only eight games. Let’s check in after game 15. I think what you wanted to say was yes guy, no guy beef, right? Yes, that’s what you wanted to do. Yes. It’s a sponsored uh sponsored segment. Yes, guy, no guy beef. Yes. But with with a question on beef. Uh in terms of the bottom six, uh do you have a level of concern or not for the lease? Uh my only concern is again regardless of the points and and or lack thereof, it’s again you got to play good uh good team defense, you can’t be catching minuses. You can’t be in the penalty box, but you can’t just be out there giving the top six a rest. You got to have something get in on the cycle, get to the net, uh you know, cause some disruption, be tough to play against. And again, I noticed Ro Wah Joshua getting in on the forche. I noticed they’ve been cycling some plays as well, too, and chipping in offensively. So again, I think they’ve been pretty decent as of late. Well, we’ll see what all that means tonight. Calgary Flames here against the Toronto Maple Leafs. It’s a Tuesday night. Bolson Canadian Leafs hockey. The opening face off. Joe Bowen and Jimmy Ralph next on TSN 1050, the iHeart Radio app, and the Leafs radio network. In 2019, Steve made a smart move, or so he thought. The face off will be brought to you by Alpine Credits. You own your own home and need a loan. Alpine Credits can help. Get approved at alpinecredits.ca. Leaps to the right and the flames to the left. Official has them at center ice. Matthews leans in and the puck is dropped and we are underway. Glad you’re along with us. Fired in by Brandon Carlo into the blame zone. Tucked around back of the net then by Rasmus Anderson. The puck comes up on the wing, but Huberto couldn’t get it out for Calgary. Leaf’s trying to get it back to the blue line. And it is broken up and the Flames will come to center and Anderson will shoot it down and around the boards for the Flames to get it back at the Toronto net. The puck comes up on the wing and now it’s brought to center ice by Matthews. He gets it ahead for Bobby McMahon who shoots it down into the Flame zone. Hustling in there after it was Willie Knander back into the lineup and it’s cleared by Calgary to center. The Leafs want to get a change going and Benois will regroup the puck with Jake McCabe. McCabe steps up at center and Ali oops it deep into the right wing corner. Rais around back of the net banking it back to the blue line. Benois with a shot. Didn’t make it through. It was blocked by a stick. Cleared out and down the ice by Calgary but no icing. Stlars playing it up for played it back. Look out. He ran right into his own man and almost flattened Jake McKay. Long shot off the chest of Stallars and knocked down on the play. Centering pass. Another shot. Stlars a save. Benois the rebound to clear gets it up on the wing and Mlin will get it or Mcklly rather will get it out on the wing and the Leafs have to go back into their own zone. You think after Neccois saw what Jake McCabe did against the Buffalo Sabres and Alex Tuck, he might have thought, “I’ll leave him alone.” Absolutely. Brought to the line and in by Riley. He’ll play it around back to the net. Mess with me, buddy, and you’ll get one of these. Back to the point it comes. And a broken stick allows the Flames to get to center ice. with some good backing by the Maple Leafs. Break up the rush as Carlo had his stick disintegrate as he tried to take a slap shot from the right point. Pass intercepted and brought right back in by Tavaris. Tvaris with a feed on the wing and it was knocked away by Calgary and sent out at center ice. Brandon Carlo up on the wing again and it is fired in by Loren. Far side doy now to Robertson. Robertson gets it over on the near side but can’t find a open man. Flames get it back at center and clipped in by McKenzie Wager. Nick Robertson curling in the zone but the pass goes back. Oel gets it ahead and Loren tips it into the zone. Robertson will provide some floor checking pressure. The Flames get rid of it to center ice. Bouncing puck sent to the near side. Nick Robertson has it again. Laid it ahead on the left wing. Loren flips it high to the right wing corner and Matthews on a change of players is into the forche. He can’t get there in time. Calgary gets it out at center ice. Three minutes in the books. Here’s Knander in across the line. Centers. Matthews chipping it on goal. The first good scoring opportunity as Dustin Wolf comes up big there. That was a turnover right of the Calgary blue line that had really Knander and Matthews take off on a twoon two, but Matthews had a jump on Jonathan Hubedo going to the front of the net and Willie Knander was able to find it and get it to the Leaf captain. By the way, two career games by Knander and Matthews, both against Dustin Wolf, Calgary goender. They’ve combined for five goals in those two games against him. Three from Willie Knander. Dustin Wolf comes into this game 26 and one, but he has never beaten the Maple Leafs. 6.16 goals against average in the two games he’s faced Toronto. Backing up your point of what they’ve done. Yeah. Leaves win the draw at the point. A wrist shot high and wide off the glass. Riley sends it back into the corner and the Flames with Anderson getting it out at center will get to the red line and shoot it in. Stlars tucking it back to Riley. Riley gets it up on the wing and it is pushed out at center ice and Matthews finds McMahon on the wing and back behind the net. Matthews collides. Knander comes out of the corner with it. Center did in front of the goal. Matthews with a shot. Oh, he cradled the puck and if he one times it, he’s got an empty net, but it must have been rolling on him and he decided to cradle it first. Yeah, it was Willie Nelander made a great play from the near board. Came out of the corner and looked cross ice and Matthews was wide open to the left of Wolf and yeah, one-time you would think puts that in although Wol did get over in a hurry, Joe. post to post and maybe Matthews read that and tried to get a better angle before delivering it to the net. Anyway, Dustin Wolf got some consideration for rookie of the year last year as and frankly Calgary didn’t weren’t eliminated from the playoffs until game 81 of an 82 game schedule last year. Leafs in their own zone. Oliver Ecman Larson lead pass to center. Knocked in over the line by NY. Wolf clears away to get it into the near corner and McKenzie Wager will get it out at center. Flames are offside at the blue line and that gives us an opportunity to introduce Devin Berg and Tyson Baker as the linesman. Jake Frank and Eric Ferlot are the referees. Well, Leaf’s come in against another team that they’ve had success over in the last couple of years. At least four, what do we got here? 40 and1. Yep. Against the Calgary Flames the last five meetings between the two and they have won five in a row here. Four straight year against the Flames. Pass comes ahead. Shot into the zone by Dakota Joshua. The puck comes around the boards and it is Azam Cadri starting out. Cadri to center makes a couple of moves to gain the zone. Got it on the wing. A pass comes back in and they score. Morgan Frost on a pass that came off of a body to the near side. And Frost, a left-handed shot, rips it off the post and in. And the Flames gain an early goal on their third shot on goal. Pretty easy entry though, Joe, for Nazam Cadri coming into the leaf zone. He picks the puck up on his own end. And everyone just keeps backing off, backing off, backing in. And he found himself in the middle of five Leafs in the high slot. Dished it to the left and the puck was funneled back to the right. And Morgan Frost handles a bouncing puck and sort of chips at far side blocker side on Stolars to open the scoring for the Flames. And Mike Ross will make the announcement. This was a few years earlier. Yeah, Morgan’s father, Andy, would be at the PA here at Scotia Bank Arena to announce it, but I’m sure Andrew’s in attendance watching Morgan score his first goal here at Scotia Bank Arena. third goal that he has scored against the Maple Leafs. It’s the first one here, I believe. I believe you’re right. I believe you’re right. Yep. But another, you know, another opportunity off the rush. Leaves just soft in the middle of the ice. And for Morgan Frost, who came over from the Philadelphia Flyers last season, couple of years ago, he was a 19 goal scorer for Philadelphia. last year 40 well actually 42 games total with the Flames including this year as that’s only his fifth goal in 18 points leads to the long left wing feed to spring Morgan Riley to the zone he’ll flip it into the near corner for Loren now arrives on the scene to try Oh there’s a man all alone in front of the net but they couldn’t get the puck over on the far side that was Nick Robertson Robertson yes puck back down into the Toronto zone. Doi up ahead, deflected by Loren who loses his stick in the fray and will pick it up as it’s cleared down into the Toronto zone. Laid up on the wing to the winger Loren who with a stick in his hand this time is able to deflect it out at center. Knander unable to come up with the loose puck as the Leafs get it ahead to Matthews who circles back in his own zone and finds the Maple Leafs McCabe who gets to center and Knander stood up at the blue line and it comes to center ice and the Leafs will bring it right back in again with Matthews. A shot glove save big rebound but it bounced away and it’s brought out by Michael Backlin now to center here. for the Flames and across the line, but they give the puck away and it is Benois forcing it back behind the net and into the far corner. Flames get it back to the point. DD to the near side to Waguer. Waguer goes to the front of the net as it comes back to the point and the shot deflects in front of the goal and Wager knocked it just wide. It rolls into the crease and it’s cleared up on the wing. Leaf without a stick and falling down was McMahon. Now the Flames with a bit of an oddman advantage here. A shot off the shoulder of goalender Stallars. Knander with a nice fake to gain possession. He’ll get it ahead to Benois as the Leafs are getting a change. Benois tries to get to the red line, but flips in anyway. I don’t know about you, but when a guy loses a stick in your own hand and you’ve got the bench, you know, the first or third, go to the bench. It is. I know. I know. I mean, it’s a it’s a 5-second power play. I realize you don’t want to be out of position, but you’re not doing much. And maybe you have a team kind of a a yell fire firebird something just to play four poor man here while I get a stick or get replaced one or the other. But you are useless out there without one. Shot goes wide of the net. Tipped down on the boards. Back of the net for Tavaris. Tavvaris circles back at the far half wall. Makes a move against Cadri. Centered it in front of the net. Nice couldn’t get to it. And the Flames are going to get it out at center ice and at least backpedal it into neutral territory. Oel getting it across the line for Javaris. Sitting on 499 career goals for Johnny Toronto. Laid into the corner. Cowen spun around. Puck comes free. Zane Perrick gets it out at center on the left wing side. Good hit there by Meyers to stand up his man and Morgan Riley with the puck getting it off his skate down the ice. But it’s going to be an icing call against Toronto with 1146 to play in the first period and the Calgary Flames have a one to nothing lead on a goal by Morgan Frost from Hubo and Cadry. By the way, this Flames are no stranger to scoring first. Seventh straight game they’ve opened the scoring. You know, they lost five straight when scoring first and finally stopped that streak against the New York Rangers at Sunday night. Rangers looked horrible in Calgary. A 5-1 win for the Flames. On the left wing side it comes. Little stutter move. Works into the corner waiting for a teammate to get open. Goes to the far point. Kept in there with a wrist shot that was blocked. It comes back to Benois. He’ll get it in deep and around back of the net for Cowan. Cowan stops up. Works back behind the goal again. Stops up again. Ties it again to the far side. It goes to the defense. A shot blocked and it’s pushed out at center. And a twoon-one break for Calgary. Looking in front of the net for Sharon Gomez. And a shot is smothered by Stallard. Jake McCabe tried to force the puck through the middle and when it was intercepted, Leafs were in trouble again. giving up an opportunity off the rush. But fortunately, Anthony Stolars bails him out. Leafs are starting to get healthy as Willie Knander is back in the lineup. Cali Yarn Crook, Dakota Mermis, and Sammy Blah, who has not played a single game yet. Joseph Wall, of course, still back in the fold, but he’s going to be a while to get back. I would imagine he’d get some time with the Marlies, Joe. Yeah, I would think maybe a weekend or whatever with two or three games, right? Draw one by the Flames. They work to the left wing side. Here’s Cadri with a sharp angle shot that was stopped. Rebound was pushed aside there by Carlo. Oh, a Saturday pass in front. Oh, a save by Stallars as he rubs Cadri. Did he get a piece of that? It went over top of the net. I thought he did. Cleared ahead. And there’s going to be a penalty here for holding. Well, and this is just after Brandon Carlo got the puck and just threw it to the right wing boards. Nobody there. Flames get it back and the Leafs eventually are going to take a penalty for it. And it’s going to be Oliver Eman Larson. So the Leafs, you’re hoping for a better start. I thought they had some decent jump. No, it looks like this was just air. Looking at the replay of this, Joe. Yeah, I I thought Stolars got his glove up as well, but this was just kind of air mailed high and wide of the net. Well, here’s a bit of a discrepancy. This is the 42nd power play for the Calgary Flag. I noticed that when we were doing the stats. This is They now have 19 more than the Leafs. Yeah, the Leafs. Leaves are three for 23. Calgary 5 for 41. Puck in the center ice area. Broken up by N. N works down the boards. Got into the corner with it. Now trying to take it to the wall, but had it knocked off his stick. And the Flames will start their power play out. Perrick getting to center. He’ll drop it back. Flipped in on the right wing side for Coronado. Matt Coronado along the boards as it comes back to the blue line. Perrick to the far side. Shot off the goal post. Rattle there by Cadri and the rebound comes to the near boards. Pass in front of the net had the Leafs intercept and finally it is shot down the ice by Jake McCabe. Well, his shots are seven to three and throwing a goal post and Adam Nam Connory missing top part of the net with a great chance. Connor Zerry brings it in over the line. slowed up at the blue line, but Waguer maintains possession for the Flames. Down into the corner now for Sharon Govich. Back to the point to Weaguer. He walks the line, looks for Sharon Govich who gets his pass. Back to Weaguer. One-time coming. That stop rebound into the air. Gloved by Anthony Stolars to stop play. Now Dustin Wolf had moment not long ago where similar to Anthony Stolars where he was somewhat critical of the team in front of him, Calgary is the lowest scoring team in the NHL, averaging just two goals a game. Rangers are second at 2.2 goals per game. And that’s after Calgary beat the Rangers 5-1. But Dustin Wolf came out and said, “I can’t score. You know, I’m trying to do my job, but I can’t score.” And we’re losing a lot of games because of it. A one-time blocked in front of the net. Weaguer gets it off on the left wing side. Back to the point. Weaguer with it again. Walks to the middle. Dishes back to the far side. Centering pass. Nope. Another shot. Goes back to the blue line. Walking the line is Raspus Anderson. His shot was deflected wide in front of the net. Into the corner it goes for Connor Zerry. Back to the blue line out of the reach of Rasmus Anderson and it’s down the ice. Flames try a quick up from the goalkeeper to get it into the zone and now almost had it intercepted and tripped up there and a penalty coming. Good effort there by Robertson. He stole the puck, tried to step around the Calgary forward and got hauled down. I think he sold it pretty well, Joe. Well, I mean, it was still interference, but Nick Robertson, as soon as he felt the shoulder on shoulder with a puck ahead of him, he went down rather easily. And for 5 seconds, we will play four on four before the Leafs go to their first power play of the night. Power play brought to you by Subaru. This fall, uncommon comes standard to the right in the flame zone. By the way, the Calgary’s also been short-handed 15 more times in the Leafs. Small potato. Yeah. But it’s amazing how it always works out, right? Isn’t it Kevin Ball taken to the boards. Tavaris trying to get it free to Matthews and does. Matthews back along for Knander. Knander walks back now. Hustling into the fray after the penalty was over is N. Matthews back at the blue line to Knlander in the near corner. Back to Matthews. Matthews with a wrist shot. Co- save. Rebound cleared by Calgary down into the Toronto zone. Morgan Riley is going back to retrieve it. He starts up the right wing side, drops the puck back. Matthews will carry through neutral ice. Works it back to Knander who gains the zone. Off to Riley. Riley on the near boards for Matthews. Matthews into the slot area. Tavarus going for the net and he backhanded it just wide at that far post. Off the boards it’s cleared up on the left wing side and the Flames are going to get rid of it out and down the ice. Minute six to go in the power play. One- nothing Calgary. Riley rocks for Knander. Knander swinging out of his own zone. A pass up over the line bringing in now is Cowan to Matthews and it was off the heel of his stick as he was in alone. Play to the far boards and Cowan keeps it in. Here’s Matthews with it again to Cowan on the far side. Cowan works back towards the blue line to give to Matthews. Matthews to Cowan. Cowan works into the middle of the ice. Looks for a chance to shoot it. Does it gives it to Knander. Knander now on the near half boards. Works in with a pass down low to Cowan. goes back of the net in front. It comes to Willie. Pass on the right wing side. One-time on the far side by Riley went wide and now they can’t keep it in as it comes out over the blue line. Dander back in over the line with Cowan waiting for a change of players as Cowan gets it back at the near point to the far side to do to the point and a shot by Carlo is gloved by Dustin Wolf with three seconds left with the man advantage. Oh, East on Cow and Joe I mean tries to get it back to Austin Matthews but had a step in behind the Calgary defense and instead of putting his head down and driving to the net, he pulls up and tries to get it back to Austin Matthews. Is that a confidence thing? I is that a rookie a rookie thing that I shouldn’t be doing this? I think part of it is I’ve got one of the best goal scorers in the league. My job is to get him the puck. Yeah. And yet, you’ve said it before, even with Austin Matthews, you got to be selfish sometimes. Yep. And I think for Cowan, that was a great opportunity to be selfish. Cleared out and down the ice by Calgary. The penalty is over and the Leafs trail one to nothing. The puck back in their own zone. 643 to play. Long lead pass looking for the Leafs forward McMahon. That didn’t work. And the puck comes back into the slot area and is brought out by Max Doi. Doi launches it in. Robertson hustling after it. Had a pretty good hook applied to him. No penalty there. And the Flames will get it up on the wing and Hubo lays it back into his own tone. Weaguer gets to the red line and had it turned over and the Leafs will just play it in. McMahon goes into the for check. Unable to get a body on body in the corner and the Flames get it out at center. Cormato can’t get in over the line. Leafs are changing. Too many men. It’s got to be Calgary, right? They had control of it. Well, the mic’s not working, but I got the sign that figured it out. I was reading his le lips, Joe. And I think he said too many on the ice. I just don’t know what team. Well, he pointed out. Yeah, I think we’re out. We’ll be back with the Leaf Power Play. We had to go to the uh lost and found the next morning cuz three of them had lost their voices. Well, I’m sure dad had a little extra left. Oh, no. I left over. I had to be careful. I knew I had a game. I had a game tonight. So, so I want to thank him. What a great treat that was. Great game. Leafs on the power play. Here’s Tavaris laying it down into the corner. Nice against the boards. Has it blocked trying to keep it in is Knander on the near wing and he comes away with it. Back to the blue line to Riley. Riley walks the line. Back to Willie. Knander being pressured goes to Riley. Riley looking back into the near corner. Matthews in front of the net. Deflected it right on and that was stopped. Nice along the near board. Matthews is there as well. Flames don’t get it out. And Matthews works down into the corner, centers it in front of the net. No shot. Riley working back at the blue line to Matthews in the high slot. Still no shot. Matthews down into the corner to Nlander. Nander with a lot of traffic in front. Goes back at the net. Nice into the slot. Riley with a wrist shot that hit a body trying to turn with it is Tavarus. He’s shot and that was stopped by Wolf. Flames don’t get it out. Matthews near side Riley. He has trouble controlling but now gets to it and works to the middle of the ice. Riley still with it near side now for Matthews. Down low to Willie. Knander holds into the circle. Back to Matthews off his skate to Riley. Riley with a wrist shot. That’s wrong and shot down the ice as it was stopped by Wolfe. And now a quick up by goalender Skolars. But the Leafs are going to take their time as they’re getting the second unit onto the ice. Might have more the last few seconds of this power play. Joe, get the puck to the net. Look for rebounds. Well, they’ve had a couple of chances at the net, which was better than the first power play. Leafs get it across the line. Oliver Eman Larson a shot with no traffic in front and Dustin Wolf has no trouble scooping this up and holding for a faceoff. They got to utilize that more when you’ve got Tavvaris in the slot. You’ve got Matthew N behind him right in front of the net. We’ve got that double screen. That should open up that pass to either Matthews in the right side or Knander on the left. The Leafs don’t seem to be able to utilize the power play for those one-times, do they? No. And and Matthews sifts all over the ice and talking about we saw in Buffalo the one-timer by Matthews led to a power play goal. Cowan wins the faceoff and they said he didn’t do it correctly or something went wrong. They’re going to try it all over again. Cowan taking the face off. Doi along with Machelli and Cowan scrum the draw, but the Flames are going to get it rattled off the boards and sent down the ice. Stallars back of the net. Give it off. 8 seconds remain in the power play. Machelli coming through center, dropping the puck for Domi with speed in across the line. But a wrist shot away, but it went off a leg and went wide. And now we got a slash. And is this another Calgary penalty? Is this Cadry kind of sifting back in that direction. Calgary number 10. Two minutes for a slash. Wow. Third power play of the period for Toronto. Better cash in. Now you talked about the difference in power plays between those teams. Leafs are starting to catch up. First up with Corollnick and Kolakavo, weekday mornings 6 till 10 on TSN 1050. You ain’t first, you’re last. Back here at Scotia Bank Arena, the Leafs go to their third power play brought to you by Subaru this fall. Uncommon comes standard. And if we do have that belief that things even out, leaf spitter cash in here in this third power play attempt of the first period. Get it back to the point to Riley. He tries to walk the line to the far side. Back to Matthews. High slot and a wrist shot is wired high and wide. rebound back at the net, but a high stick making contact with it. The faceoff will be in the Calgary zone to the left. Flames came in to this game had only killed off 30 of 40 on the penalty kill. 18th overall. They were one for one against the Rangers. The previous four had given up seven goals and 19 chances short. [Music] Leads have not been able to take advantage. And waved out of the faceoff circle. It’s Cadri. Cavaris won it cleanly and back it comes to Matthews. Matthews off on the far side to Riley. Back to Matthews. Matthews near side for Neander to Matthews again up high where the point man should be. Now he gives it off to the far side. Matthews couldn’t get a shot. He gets it to Tvaris. Tvaris down low. Matthews couldn’t jam it in. Matthews with the rebound to Tvarus to Riley. Riley with a wrist shot in traffic. Knocked down and gloved by Wolf. [Music] Yeah, you’re right. I mean, you want Matthews, kneelander on the circles, but see so many one-time goals, whether it’s Leon Dryside or whether it’s Alexander Ovetchkin, and the Leafs, you believe, have the ability to do it, but just don’t seem to have desire, but yeah, there there’s just they don’t set up that way. Tvaris will take the face off and the draw scrum but the Leafs get it back to the point. Riley to Matthews down low it goes to Knander. Kneelander passing in front. Knocked away but Ny is able to free it up to get it to Matthews in the far half warts. Now the Leafs with it to the near side and now back to the point to Riley again. Riley to Knlander. Knander down low. He’s got nice eyes in front of the net as Matthews takes the drop pass but doesn’t shoot it. Now he gets it again. Top of the circle and he snapped it wide. Riley gets the rebound. Cross ice to Matthews. Matthews working in with 50 seconds down. It goes to Riley to Matthews. One-time blocked and it’s going to caramote at center ice. Leafs not changing at this point. Matthews gets in over the line but runs into a traffic jam. able to get it freed up for N. And over on the far side for Tavvaris a bit too far. Knocked down in front of the net was one of the Flames. They’re hollering for a penalty and none coming. It’s up against the boards being pinned there and the puck finally is knocked free and the Flames get it out into the center ice area. 15 seconds left for the second unit. 205 to go in the period. at least might have got away with a trip or interference in behind the Calgary net. And they turn the puck over at the blue line and it’s backhanded into the Calgary bench. A faceoff is going to come deep in Calgary territory as an end result with a second left in the power play. And even despite the three consecutive power plays, the Leaf still stuck at nine shots on goal. Same as the Flames. Morgan Frost from Hubo and Cadri. the only scoring play we’ve had and the planes lead it one to nothing. That is their number one line. Uber missed the first five games of the regular season. So see that would have a lot to do with the gold route to start the year for Calgary. Cadri gets in over the line being chased there by Dakota Joshua. The puck along the near boards. Flames keep it in with a bouncing puck in front of the net and it was dished off to Cadri but he couldn’t get a shot. Back to the point it comes near side for Anderson. A shot rolling puck in the goalace and Stallars is able to track it down and get a glove on top of it and we’ll hold for a face off with a minute 29 to go in period number one. Did you stay up? Oh yeah. For the entire Blue Jay game last night. There we go. That gets Calgary a little closer. 3-2 now on power play. So, five minors in the opening period. But yes, I stayed up and criticized every move like everybody else. Boy, they used every available body. By the way, I got I got to the point where we did Google and my son Jesse and I stayed up and watched what happens if a player’s ejected or gets hurt. You have to forfeit the game if you do not have another player. I did not know that. Wow. And they were they were at the bottom of the barrel. Pitchers heading position players. Back to the point. Perrick gets it into the corner. Back along the boards for Nazam Cadri. Cadri works to the goal line. Sends it back to the point. Zane Perrick now works in with a pass in front that was deflected away. Leaf’s trying to get to it but can’t. Good play by Coronado to block it but then it is stolen back by Ny and he gets it out and down the ice. Less than a minute to go in the first one- nothing Flames. Second power play for Calgary. Parrot stole had it stolen. And now a pass in just out of the reach of Loren who is able to play it back along the boards. Gets it back to Loren who can’t wrap it around from behind the goal. Flames take it away from him and now they’ll work it out at center ice. They flip it back. Lorenz Lorenz if he’d had enough gas probably had a chance at a breakaway there. Although I think Wol would have come out and played it himself, but a halfhazard kind of a play there by the Flames to get it in over the line. It’s knocked back towards the blue line. Kept alive by Perrick. Now he has it again at the point over on the left wing side. It comes back to the point once more. They play catch with it looking for a man in front of the net and it was there but Coleman couldn’t get it on his stick and the Leafs are able to launch it high out and down the ice and the horn will end the first period. Well, an opportunity for your best players to put their stamp on this game and they were unable to do it. Three straight power plays for the Leafs result I would humbly guess at maybe five shots on goal tops in those three power plays. show. Yep. And five on five. Calgary was easily the more dangerous team between the two. So a one- nothing Flames lead. We’ll ship it off to Jim Tatty and Anthony Stewart. The Leafs live here. And yet it’s Calgary 1 Toronto nothing after 20 minutes of play. TSN after 20 is brought to you by Subra. This fall uncommon comes standard. Jim Tatty and former NHL Anthony Stewart with you live from Scotia Bank Arena. Uh Stu, uh could you give me a word to describe what we saw there in the first 20 minutes? Well, I typically have uh smiley faces to motivate me to do a great job tonight, but again, I think it just turned this uh smile upside down to a frown. And that sort of sums up uh the Toronto Maple Leaf um you know, period. And for me, it just you know, you I’ve heard you use the word in in different contexts, just discombobulation out there, right? There’s no real function. Power play was 0 for three that period. Uh they did have 10 shots, but regardless of scoring on the power play, which again, you’re down one- nothing. I believe you have to find a way to score at least one to get back into the game. Uh the power play has to at least get momentum and keep momentum. And I think, you know, on all three of them, they’ve lost the momentum in the game. And what happens now in typically situations like this, Calgaryy’s in that room saying, “Well, this team’s not that good. We need the next one. They’re going to break.” So, um you know, for Toronto, win, lose, or draw. Again, I want to see that effort. I want to see that energy, right? You know, we uh got some glimpses of uh Cadri out there who’s vying to be on the Olympic team. You noticeably see him come in, enter, try to make something happen where uh Toronto, they’re just playing that guessing game. You know, maybe I’ll go to the flank, maybe I’ll go cross, maybe I’ll try something. They’re trying to pull a rabbit out of the hat to try to get back into this game. Uh they just don’t look like they have the organization. They just seem like they’re just sort of out of whack. And maybe it’s a trend, but at the end of the day, the results and the process was expected to be a lot further along at this point into the season. Yeah, I mean, we’re not going to project where this goes, but we’re talking about the first 20 minutes. And and what I saw was uh in the early stages of this game, Calgary was able to go down the ice pretty easily and and there was one situation after the one- nothing goal where a two-on-one became a threeon-one real fast. And and I said to you, we’re seeing that a lot on a regular basis. And then we go to section two, which is the power play, which did not break down the coverage at all. In fact, the coverage sort of sat there and said, “Okay, what are you going to do about us?” Yeah, it’s it’s they were they were freestyling, right? And uh you know, um Calgary had a really tight box there. They were sort of giving up the shot. I noticed a couple times the Div were shooting the puck with no traffic in front of the net, which is a little bit, you know, headscratching when you have Tvaris, who’s supposed to be the high slot bumper and Net front. So again, uh you know, typically when you’re struggling, you find ways to maybe freestyle to try to make something happen. But it’s the exact opposite. When you are struggling, you have to resort on your training. You have to resort on your systems. You can’t just it’s not going to be a hope play. And I think for the Maple Leaf that period, a couple hope plays coming in, throwing it on net or throw a backhand pass through the seam. And so again, they’re just the structure just doesn’t seem to be there. And I think it’s typically maybe um you’re holding your stick a little bit too tight. you’re trying to make something happen where where this team has gotten out of jams is is playing that Craig Bubé style hockey working earning a goal not having a whole play trying to get you back into the game. Well, I’m going to use the cart before the horse analogy. I I think what we’re looking for, most people in the building, can you get us a goal so that we can know what you have to do is do the ruby style hockey and then get the goal out of that. Uh but they’re sort of looking I think most people are looking at this and thinking they need a goal to help them. No, they need to play well to help them. Yeah. Right. And uh you know the hockey is a game of luck and you have to create your own luck and you work for your luck, right? And um again when you’re struggling to put the puck in the net, you got to maybe just have it be an ugly one, right? Did you see someone just come in and tee it up with you know traffic and jam the net and and try to literally um you know force it across the line. It’s just it’s it’s freestyling. It’s rolling over the top. I used I I have the term u it looked really pretty as as the puck possession procession is just sort of going around and around trying to make something happen. And for me, it’s just off script. And that’s where I’m a little bit confused. It’s off script because with what was at stake this year based on the performance of last year, I expected the group to be a little bit further along. But the one positive I would say, they are drawing some penalties. Yeah, they haven’t played anywhere close to their B minus game, let alone their B+ game. And it’s a one- nothing game. So, I’m sure now Craig Breub, if he hasn’t kicked over the Gatorade uh uh yet, that’s probably coming sooner. But uh again, I could see maybe some line shuffling or maybe a guy sitting uh or two. If he does, we should get him a pair of Yes guy boots. Steel toe. Steel toe. Yes guy boots solve all problems. I heard they’re vibranium boots. Yeah. Wakanda. Yeah. But but you know and I guess to to sort of um go back over it with uh with a positive stretch. You’ve got really 7 minutes of power play time, right? One right after the other. Uh if you’re looking for something to break the rhythm, how about 7 minutes of unsuccessful power play time? That would do it. Yeah, but they’re at least they’re drawing penalties, right? Where that wasn’t the case. I believe through four or five games they had two power plays or something like that. So, I guess that’s the start. That’s the uh silver lining. But I I’ll tell you this right now. Craig Brew is not happy. Simple. Simple as that. Um and and again, there’s only so much yelling and screaming you can do. There has to be some accountability done uh some other ways. So, if they if they come out with another flat game or a flat period, I can see some changes being made in the lineup. Some guys moving up, some guys moving down, and potentially some guys moving out. You know, I just I’m a little um I guess um confused as to why they start the way they did just based on where they’ve been over the last week. Um and could it be as simple as um we want you to play this way and as they go to do it, it doesn’t work and then that sort of messes your head up. Yeah. But I’ll tell you the conversation probably when they, you know, after practice, after the Buffalo game, hey guys, we probably didn’t deserve to win that game. Um, we we we did get the two points, but let’s not cheat fate. Let’s not just now, you know, expect the big guns are just going to come in. You have to work and create your own luck. And you know, uh, just imagine now if you’re playing New Jersey twice instead of the Detroit Red Wings or, you know, you’re playing some of these teams, the Carolina Hurricanes, you could take, you could be essentially where the Flames are right now, 27 and one, right? So again, it’s for me, at this point in the season, I don’t care about the results. Um, but again, when you’re 44 and one, you typically say, well, we got a couple bad bounces uh in that game and that loss, this loss. But a lot of these games, they’ve been completely outworked. Um, out hustled, out chanced, out everything. I think that the key phrase is outworked. Yeah. So, and that’s what’s happening tonight. So, maybe they need a good trick-or-treating and, uh, you know, that’ll that’ll turn into a little sugar rush. I don’t know. It It’s frustrating. It’s frustrating because I I didn’t have the luxury of having this problem starting, not starting on time, being slow, not getting in on my coverage, not doing checks. I had to pay attention to those details. I I’m telling you, I was on the waiver wire. I was in the minor. Like, and these were teams that had zero expectations of making the playoffs, let alone winning a Stanley Cup. So, from the accountability factor, I’m a little bit perplexed cuz I’m like, some of these issues, you know, we should be talking about maybe one, two guys, not 12, 13, 14 having those same issues. It’s a large group, that’s for sure. Stu, thanks very much. One nothing for Calgary over the Leafs after 20 minutes of play. [Music] [Applause] Leafs trail the Calgary Flames by a score of one to nothing. They win the statistical battle uh 11 to nine. And they outshoot the Flames. 7-2 attempts blocked. 83 shots missed. Even in hits, giveaways nine for Calgary and two for the Maple Leafs. But it is a goal by Morgan Frost from Cadri and Gubbero that has the Flames out in front one to nothing. Calgary really did have the better opportunities, didn’t they? Cadri also hit a goal post missed missed one up top over top of the crossbar when Stallers was down and out. There you go saying the statistics are wrong. Well, how do you like the score? Is that a stat too? Uhhuh. Uh-huh. Apparently that’s an important one. Last time we checked. Face off at center. Puck is dropped and we’re underway. Leaps to the left and the flames to the right. No. back it all up. We got to do it all over again. Still 31 seconds left in the penalty to Oliver Ekman Larson. At least get a bit of a break there where the power plays dissected by the intermission. Now the puck is dropped. Flames control it. Carrick gets it in and shoots it around the boards to the far side. Jake McCabe couldn’t settle it down, but got it to the blue line but not out. Now a pass into the slot is knocked back to the blue line, but the Flames are able to maintain possession. Bank pass back to the blue line for Perrick. Perrick on the left wing side. Cubedo a pass in front of the net. Oh, and a nifty little move made by Morgan Frost, but the right pad of Stolars got out to deflect it. Far side now for Coronado. End of the corner for Frost. Back to the point. That shot went off of the Leaf defenseman and it is cleared as Carlo blocked that shot in front of the net. Flames bring it right back into the zone. Centering pass for Cadri. Had it knocked off his stick by Brandon Carlo and the Leafs get it out on the right wing side and it’ll be carried to the red line and shot in by Oliver Larson. Lanes get it out into center ice. Knocked back in over the line by Meyers. Now in on the left wing of Hanzac that’s into the corner for Calgary. Working along the near board cycles it down into the corner. That’s cut off. The Leafs are able to poke it to the blue line, but not out. Long shot deflected off the stick of Kevin Ball. Now it comes up on the near wing. McMahon will one-handed out at center, but the Flames have started the period with some offensive zone pressure. Now the Leaf steel. Here’s Knander working on the left wing. He’s got a threeon-one break. Sausage pass in front and it was knocked into the pad of Wol by Bobby McMahon. Well, that’ll come in after a steal by Knander at center ice. Played around the boards into the near corner. Meyers in there, knocks his man down. The puck comes free. The Leafs get it off the boards and McMahon banks it to center ice. Flames regrouping in the red line area. Launch a long bouncing shot in wide of the Leaf goal. It comes to the side of the goal. A shot. Couple of them saved made there by Stallars. He was almost the architect of his own demise when he failed to control the puck on the shootin. Now it is McMahon playing it back to his defense. Meyers gets it ahead. Leafs trying to get it into the zone to complete a change and Machelli did that but the Flames have it under control in their own zone. Now they get it out at center and knock it into the Leaf head. Flames heading to the bench to make a change looking for a long up and it comes to Tvaris. Davarus in on the wing. Backhanded through the gold crease area, but no one home to direct. Flames back the other way. Kirkland in on the right side, pulls up, plays it down into the corner. Little head fake to try and play it back to the point to Kevin Ball. His shot goes high and wide of the lead goal. Machelli took the wrong angle to a loose puck and that maintains possession for Calgary. Now the Leafs get a turnover and they’ll get it out. Penis. Whoa. Blows the tire but is able to get back up. Sorry for scaring you there. Are you okay? Here the Leafs over the line with Doy now. Doy with a shot and scores. Holy mackerel. What a turn of events. The Leafs tie the game. from a long tire for the second goal of the season for Max Stoi. Puck is just wired around the boards and right around the benches at center ice. Steven Lorent tips it just enough to get it to Max Doy on the left wing side. Florence goes to the front of the net, takes a man with him, Ryan Lumbberg. And then from the high slot, Max Stomy is able to snap it through. The Calgary defenseman up under the crossbar and to tie this game at one. Shot into the leaf zone. Stallars banks it off the boards to center. Flames get it again. Have to wait for teammates to get on side. Frost in on the right side for Cadri. He flipped it in front, but no one could make contact. And Robertson is away at center. Nikki Robertson to the line and in dropping it off for Dome. A cross ice pass was just out of the reach of Jake McCabe who was skating in. And the Flames bring it back the other way. Cadbury trying to drive, but he was denied there on a good play by the Leaf defense as Carlo got in the way of that. Long shot far side for Rance trying to free it up from Brandon. Carlo kicked back off of stick and the Leafs have it under control around back of their goal. Carlo waiting for teammates to Machelli will draw the additional assist. McCabe gets it off to Carlo off the boards. He’s going to play it out in center. Kevin Ball gives the puck away. The Leafs unable to make a move with it though. Played back in over the line by Calgary. And now a bank pass gets in over the line for the Leafs. Here’s Cowan upended and I think he just lost an edge, but the fans think it might have been a trip. Leafs go back into their own zone to recover the puck. Now towah trying to play it ahead. He had a man breaking there in Joshua. Now Huah brings it in. He’s got Cowan with him. Takes it down into the corner. Cowan couldn’t reach it, but Huah gets it back to the blue line. A pass in. And Cowan tried a one-time off to the side and missed. Cowan gets it down into the corner. He’s looked dangerous tonight so far. Played out at center ice by the Flames. Brought in over the line by Sharon Govich. He loses it. Leafs bring it right back to center. Clipped in now by Joshua Matthews into the fortech check. Leafs are in the midst of a change. 1-1. Laid back out at center by Toronto. Knander. A nice little flip to get it ahead for Bobby McMahon. Matthews tries to follow up on it but can’t. And then it’s brought in and out or out and then in which would prompt the offside. In and then out wouldn’t make any difference but out and then in script count. I don’t follow it that close to be honest. Just as well. At least in counting. You’re right. and and you get the feeling still looking for his first NHL goal and yet has looked a little anxious when getting those opportunities, right? Maybe not as confident. Maybe, you know, you get one and the hands settle down a little bit. Flames will launch it on a bounce in wide of the lead goal near corner controlled by Calgary on the near boards. Matthews couldn’t get to it, but now Jake McCabe trying to play it free. Matthews can’t help out now. He gets it handed to him and he’ll get it ahead for Knander who spins it out at center ice only to have it gobbled up by Bland. Backlin back in trying to work it in front of the net. Nelander’s back checking. Stole it away now trying to protect the puck as he circles. Calgary native. Willie Knander Leaf desperately trying to find a bouncing puck to settle it down. Now Matthews through center to the line and in. Going to drop it off for Willie. Knander back to Matthews in the corner. Matthews plays it to himself and back to the point. A long shot taken there by Meyers. Pretty good drive from the point that Wolfe had to make a good save on. Lames under control back in their own zone. Kevin Ball sends it high to the Leaf zone. Morgan Riley turns it back up ice with a long lead pass. Knocked away and brought on now by Machelli. He stops it up on the near half boards. Looks in front of the net, passing into the goal crease. Jam play there. There’s Tavvaris trying to get to it, but he can’t. The Flames get it to the line, but not out. Now they’ll bat it out at center ice. You just know Tvarus is going to score, and it’ll probably be one of those ugly ones from down around the gold crease. But 500 times is a nice round number for Johnny Toronto sitting on 499. Into the corner it goes. And now here’s NY’s back of the net. Nice looking in front. Goes back to the blue line to Oel. He’ll pump it around back of the net. Leafs trying to free it up there for Javaris. He swept it around from behind the goal line and it went out the other door into the corner. If he didn’t fire that as hard as he did, Matthew Ny would have been able to just tip it in. Now brought back in by the Leafs. Benois passes to the goal crease area and it was knocked away back in the net. Leafs come away again in front looking for Domian and didn’t connect. Doi gets the pass high in the slot down into the corner to the defense. Back to Doi one-time that was stopped with N on the doorstep. McCabe keeping the puck in. Flames try to get it out, but Doy knocks it down to Robertson on the near half boards. Back to Max. Doi a pass in with a deflection. Went wide. Robertson controls in the near corner. Back to Jake McCabe. Cross ice to Doy. And as he tried to play it back to the defense was knocked away. And here’s a break now for Lombberg in and he shot it wide. Please don’t get it out. Lombberg trying to keep it in, but it deflects to center after some great work down in the offensive zone. A bad pass. Almost prompted a break. Now Dolby breaks, but it’s a long way without much energy left into the left wing side. Loren down into the corner now for Robertson. He’s pinned to the boards. He’ll get it free to a fresh set of legs and Morgan Riley. Riley back to Robertson. Robertson into the slot and a wired shot taken there by Bobby McMahon is blockered up into the screen out of play. Well, this game’s starting to open up a little bit here. A great shift again by the fourth line, but Max Doli tries to go to Brandon Carlo and as he went to pass it, Carlo was starting to take off in a different direction and it ended up going behind him and little confusion coming back the other way, but the Leafs were able to survive it. 1-1 the score. The Leafs are in Columbus tomorrow night. A rare road game in the early part of schedule. What 740 start I believe crops around 740. Something that’s amazed me now the Atlanta Flames had some some top five picks in the NHL. Calgary Flames have never had a top three pick in the draft since moving from Atlanta. Tom Wisiaak I think was second overall with Atlanta. Y their highest draft pick is fourth overall. Wow. You know who it was? Sam Bennett. He ain’t here anymore. No. Here’s Knander down into the right wing corner. Stops up. Works back on the back hand. Gets it to the point. A shot by Ben or by Meyers was grabbed off by Wol. Well, we knew this was going to be an interesting period because coming into the second period, the Leafs this year in the second period outscored 15-6. Flames outscored 126. So, you’re saying something should have given. Experience the sacrifice, the rivalries, and the determination that define NHL greatness. Just when I thought last year couldn’t be topped, here we are. A new season of Face Off inside the NHL. Watch now only on Prime Video. Faceoff coming in the Calgary zone with 517 to play in the second period. The game tied 1-1. Leafs have been much better here in the second shots on goal favoring the Leafs now 22 to 14. They’re what? 95 Calgary at one point in the first. Yep. Draw control by the Flames. Launched high into neutral ice. Leafs back after it. Poked into the corner for Benois. He gets it around the boards to the near side and against the wall trying to dig it out and getting it to Doy was Loren. And they’ll get it out at center. Weaguer gives the puck away. Skating room up on the right side. Played it over the line. Doi couldn’t come up with it as the puck rolled away from him and goender Wolf punched it into the corner. Now the Leafs are back into the neutral zone. Changing on the go. Meyers slaps it in and then his stick disintegrates. So he heads to the bench. Two of those tonight. Have we ever played down into the Toronto end? Riley lays it into the corner for defense partner who gets it ahead. And now here’s Machelli to center and across the line. A flip pass for N. Traffic developing in front of the net. Going around back of the net was nice trying to one-handed. He was knocked down on the play. And is there a penalty or was it a glove pass? The referee made the call from center. [Music] And your guess might be as good as mine as was explaining it to the other referee who was closer. But anyway, it looks like it was a glove. Well, no. If it was a glove pass, the face off would come outside inside the line. Yeah. Yeah. So, this is a bit of a mystery. Well, that’s why we have a color analyst available to for most games to try to decipher some of this. Just told you it’s a mystery. Well, that explains a lot of things. [Music] Well, if I actually knew what it was and explained it, I’m not sure you’d get it anyway. Oh, good point on that. Leafs win the faceoff. McCabe dropping it back. On the near side, a whistling shot taken by Oel. That was blockered away nicely by Wolf. Another broken stick on the ice. Flames are going to launch it high to center off a glove that could have been blown dead as a glove pass, but it came back into the leaf end. And now Tavvaris turns and neutral ice. Here’s Tvaris trying to get in over the line, but failing. Flames flip it down to the Toronto blow line. Big hit by OAL. He flattened Igor Sarenovic and set him onto the seat of his pants. Brought in over the line by Ny dropping back and a shot was just set wide of the goal on the far side by Nick Ro. Leafs keep the puck in. Wah back into the corner for Joshua. Dakota Joshua trying to get it in front. Ruah works into the corner. Tried to center. It was blocked. This line’s had good zone time. And now here’s Cowan getting it down into the corner again. Played around back of the goal. Cut off by Kevin Paul of the Flames, but the Leafs pinch in. And here’s Joshua from a sharp angle. smothered by Dustin Wolf who has been under siege a little bit here in the latter stages of the second period with three minutes to play. You’re right though this line has been great and maybe a turning point for them was their first goal of the season as a line in Buffalo. Dakota Joshua scored in the third period of that game. He had the tying goal in the third period against the Sabres on Saturday night and starting to have a bit of an identity now, aren’t they? Trying to rule the boards, cross the net, use their size, and Cowan has added a little creativity to it. Leafs get it back to the point. Bank it in around behind the goal. Flames get it out at center and Jake McCabe circles the net. A pass up ahead too far for Knander. Going to slide right down on goal. Neander almost got there to steal it from Joel Hanley, but the Flames are going to get it out at center ice. Coleman back hands high. Blockered away by Stolars. I thought he might have caught that and set it up, but now the Leafs are going to come away with it anyway. Matthews turning in his own zone. Starting out, Matthews through center to the line and in on the right side. It’s going to be an offside. Both wingers I don’t know what Bobby McMahon was doing over here, but yeah, Willie Knander was both on the right side. And yeah, I think Neander kind of looked up and said, “You should be on the other side. Shouldn’t you? I don’t think we should have two wingers a foot apart on the right wing boards. That’ll bog the play down. Another thing, Austin Matthews, five goals in the year, Joe, but hard to believe just one five on five goal. Couple of empty netters. Power play goal, overtime goal. Brought on now by Kirkland. Kirkland driving in on goal. Scores. [Applause] It’s going to be Joel Farabby who collects the garbage after Kirkland throw the net and the former Flyer has given the Flames a 2-1 lead. Now Tyomi had Farabby walk around him and take it to the net, but this may have gone off the heel of the stick and stole ours and between his pads. He sort of had it out, Joe, and kind of that awkward kind of fanned it towards the slot, but an easy path to the net past Max Doli and this just leaks through Anthony Stolars. So, a period that the Leafs have dominated. They now find themselves back down by a single goal. It’s 2-1 Calgary. First of the season for Farabby. Good offensive hit on the boards, but the Leafs are able to get it out and down into Flames territory. They’ll bank it out at center. Morgan Riley hoops it right back out into neutral ice. McKenzie Weaguer getting it to his defense partner Jake Bean. He returns the favor. Now Cadri coming through center into the slot area. Pass on the left wing and Jubo mishandle it, but Cadri has it around back of the net. Cadri allowed to come out in front and his backhand went high over top of the net into the far corner. Flames get it back to the point. Hubardo with a wrist shot in traffic and that was knocked away by Stolars. Leafs get it out at center but not under control. Hubardo right back in again over on the far side. Riley trying to get it away from carries down into the near corner. Frost taken to the boards there as it comes up on the wing and back to the point. Hanley walks the line with a pass on the far side. The shot went wide with less than a minute to go in the period. Again, back to the point. Another shot in traffic. Back hand by Cadry. Smothered by Stallars on the rebound. Well, before the goal by Farabe, the lease have been outshooting the Flames 14-4 here in the second period. Now the Flames have regained the lead here and two shifts after the goal. They follow up with great pressure in the leaf end. 52.1 seconds left. Farabe from Kirkland and Anderson. A couple of former Flyers Ross and Baraby have the Flames out two to one. Hlander banking it down into the offensive zone. Comes around on the wing and the planes under control. Take it back. Back loses it in front and just scores. Nice and a horrible giveaway. Ties the game with 34.4 seconds left in the second. Will a knander Joe with a great stick lift on Michael Ban. Steals the puck and just slides it over to Matthew Ny. That’s an interesting line combination for Craig Ruby where it was Tavaris Ny and Knander, but it was Willy’s extra effort to the left of Dustin Wolf strips the puck from Backland and just cradles it over to Matthew Ny who took it to the net but across the top of the crease waited for Wol to go down and snapped it up and over the right pad to tie this game at two. But if you’re a Flames fan, that’s just a horrible giveaway. And almost another one as Tavaris Bank one off the glove of Dustin Wolf. Shot in by Calgary. Brown on the fire boards for Jake McCabe with 16 seconds left. A long bank pass looking for Knander. He comes up with it. Knander working back now for Tavaris. Tavaris sidestep one man but couldn’t shoot it. Back to the point. Brandon Carlo with a shot that’s blocked. Two seconds left in the period. Time will run out. So, NY with his third at 1925 sends the teams to the intermission deadlock at twos. I’m not sure if it was in the midst of a line change, but were you surprised at that group? I don’t think we’ve seen that combination yet this year. Knander, Tvaris, and Matthew Ny out at the same time. But Willie Knander, you give him credit. Arlon Michael Backland. Backland instead of going up the left wing boards started to curl back towards his own net. And Willie Knander made him pay. So the Maple Leafs and the Flames are deadlocked at twos. And we’re still looking to see John Tvaris score number 500. I recall a few years ago where Matt Sundine scored number 500 against Calgary Flames and that and that was an overtime short-handed in overtime. Yes. Mika Kiprosoft was the goender. He was not. And guess who the defenseman was that he blew it past kind of from the top of the left wing circle down here? Dion Fenof. All right. Interesting. Well, everything seems to get connected. Now, I don’t remember a whole lot since then in my life, but for some reason, that’s right there. That’s right there. All right, we’ll ship it off to uh Jim Tatty and Anthony Stewart. The game tied at twos. You’re listening to Molson Leave Hockey on TSN 1050 and the Maple Leafs radio network. Hey, it’s Joe Bolan. It’s time to sell your car. What are you going to do? As I say, tied at two Calgary and Toronto after 40 minutes of play. Jim Tatty and Anthony Stewart, former NHL are here with you live from Scotia Bank Arena. And and then Stu, I mean, that was that that tying goal is is really good for the Leafs, but the result of a really bad giveaway. Yeah, definitely a bad giveaway by Mike Gil Backland with 34 seconds left. And you know, typically you don’t want to be making plays on your backhand. But again, you just got to get rid of that. But uh great job by uh William Knander who got a really good step on him, lifted his stick and it ended up going to Matthew N, who you know, we talked about his death scoring touch at the top of the show here. You know, he’s not going to miss many from there. So, a better period for the Toronto Maple Leafs there and it starts with volume, right? We we were t discussing in off air just about the shots and it looks like they weren’t a lot. But again, it starts with that just putting pucks on net. It gets them on their heels a little bit and then you wait for your opportunity and capitalize. So, not the best period for Toronto, but when you start to work, you start to get good bounces and you create your own luck. Uh, and that’s why they’re uh 2-2 after 40 minutes. Well, as the period started, there was good three maybe three and a half minutes where the Leafs didn’t look good in their own. zone. Then they started to chip away. Uh so I’m going to say maybe two and a half minutes cuz the dome goal happens at 3:13. Um that’s an oddman rush and a good shot before that. Knander had an oddman rush off a turnover. And so the at least we’re getting in there and I guess the whole point of what I’m trying to say is both teams struggle in their own zone. The key to this is spend some time in the other team zone. Yeah. Especially when you know you have a team that uh you know you got a little bit bigger and heavier in the offseason, right? You’re not going to be uh quote unquote killing teams off the rush. You have to get the pucks below the dots. I used to have uh Jacques Martan when I was in the Florida Panthers tell me, “Watch Gary Roberts. Watch his finesse.” The only time he is finesse is below the dots. He is a pitbull getting the puck below the dots and getting to work. So that’s the mentality I think Toronto has to get uh with that mentality based on how their roster is made up. They’re big, they’re strong, they’re heavy. Uh so again, I like to see a little bit more volume down low, get pucks low to high, but uh it starts with getting the puck out of your zone. And again, we we I know what the issue is with just, you know, the lack of right shots. So again, okay, well, maybe have an emphasis on coming out the left side or maybe uh, you know, you have the centerman uh not cheat as, right? So there’s solutions to that problem. Uh, but again, it’s just, you know, we sort of know what’s going to happen from watching up here. There’s going to be a team that’s going to come in and totally outclass the Troy police and that’s a problem for down the line. We have to analyze the now. Uh, but I’m sure sure Craig Bubé wants to shore up some of those details because that can really really hurt you as you get into the second half of the season. I thought what the least did positively was almost instigated by the Doy line and in particular Max Doi who scored the goal was driving that line, wasn’t he? Right. And that and that’s what Craig Bury says. He wants him skating. He wants him to be a driver. Right. Sometimes he sort of hangs out on the flanks and and sort of makes some hope plays and all that. But that’s the reason why he scored because I’m sure Dustin Wolf was probably a little bit cheating, maybe waiting for that pass. pass was a two-on-one that developed into a twoon- two because we see Domi be a little bit questionable. Do I shoot? Do I shoot and he pulled uh Wolf off the post there, ended up burying it. That’s a really good shot. So, with a shot like that, you know, you should be releasing that a lot more. And uh he has been shooting a little bit more, but uh you notice him a little bit. You notice him. You notice him flying. You notice him getting involved. He’s weaving in and out of traffic, but he’s getting to those hard areas. I’m sure that’s what Craig Ruby wants from Doy on a regular basis. Well, and the great thing about the tying goal is it comes uh less than two minutes after the Flames have taken a 2-1 lead late in the period. 17 what 55 Fairby just drives into the goalender and scores. Yeah. And uh again, we had our red markers ready to analyze that period there. But uh um again, that was another bit of a broken play, right? And uh and I think part of the issue from last year to this year is Stlars was masking a lot of the deficiencies of the group and those pucks are just going in this year, right? And I’m sure he wanted that one back. And uh again, I would maybe fault maybe somebody else if you know he’s trying to cheat to get across with a cross seam pass, but Fairbe came in essentially all alone on his backhand. And typically with Stoolars’s size, you’re not going top shelf, so he knew it was coming low. It just ended up squeaking by. So I’m sure he wants that back. But the good thing is in a couple games ago, that would spell disaster for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Let’s write this game off. But again, they kept working, stayed on their toes, and they end up getting that great bounce. So now, if I’m Craig Grub, guys, we have no business being in this game. Yes, we had 17, 16 shots that period, but let’s work. If we put together three, four, five shifts as a group, we can take over this game because Calgary is not playing any better. So, they’re a wounded group. They’re a group that’s had a lot of uh heartbreaks over this year as well. Yeah. So, again, uh Wol is not the the biggest goalie. Get it on net traffic. Uh second and third opportunities, that’s how you win this game in the third period. And just a quick thought, I mean, it does seem like the Leafs are working their way through this. It’s not going to be a Michigan. It’s not going to be off the rush. It’s not Matthews coming across going bar down. Oldfashioned old hard work. That’s how you get back into this game and end up winning. So, it’s tied to two after 40 minutes of play. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Leafs and the Flames are deadlocked at two goals a piece as we head to the third period. We’ve only had uh well all of the penalties were in the first period, none in the second. The Leafs have had three power plays and are for three. And that means they are three of 26 on the season. And so many times you look at a power play goal, right? When you say this is the turning point in the game, whether it’s becomes a game winner, whether you know you increase a lead, get back into a game, and the Leafs big players haven’t been able to do that. Although one of their big players, Matthew Ny on a great assist, the steal and assist by Willie Knander have this game tied into the third period. By the way, Flames are 01 and0 when tied after two. The Leafs are a perfect 2-0 when tied after the second period. So, let’s hope that stat leads in. Had a nice chat with Chris Tan up here as she’s nursing an injury and hopes to get back fairly soon. Joseph Wall taking shots at practice and is getting back into the swing of things. Face off at center ice as we get set to start the third period. Matthews along with McMahon and Knander and the puck is dropped and we’re underway. Oh no, they didn’t do it. This is the third time, isn’t it, to start the period that they have not been able to get the period started because of an improper face off procedure. Yeah. Just wrong. Third straight time you’ve made a mistake on that. Thank you. Puck has dropped now and we’re underway. Down into the leaf zone. You’re three for six. Well, you know what? That’s not bad. No, I hit six. Hit 500 in the World Series. I’d probably be uh a star. Good luck to the Blue Jays as well. Whoever’s left to play into the corner. It’s played up on the wing and out at center and off McMahon. It goes down into the Flames end. McKenzie Weaguer takes it around back of the net with Knander chasing. Flames get it out at center and they’ll get it to the line and in into the slot area for Cadri, but his shot deflects. It goes into the far corner. Meyers trying to track it down is in there battling with Sam Hansick. It comes free and backhanded to center ice by McMahon, but the Flames in the midst of a change are able to flip it right back in again. Meyers around the boards to the near side. Knander late getting there. Weaguer carries down around into the far corner. Meyers rubs him out. Knander got the puck on the wing but couldn’t do much with it. Riley couldn’t help him out. Pack try the other side looking for N. to N slides it out at center and is tackled and no penalty. Now the pass in across the line dropping it back couldn’t get a shot away there was Benois and now it does come back to the blue line down into the corner. Tavvaris holding to the far side back to the point. Oh, he yell at Tavaris again. Bank pass goes in back of the net. Machelli trying to track it down. Machelli curls back towards the blue line in front of the net. Tvaris spinning on the forehand. You could see him. He was on the backhand and you could almost see the smoke coming out of his ears. Should I try this on the backhand or do I have time to cradle it? Turn and then he shot it right at him. Yeah, but kind of like a table hockey centerman, right? You got to turn and get that better angle. Better shot, too. Rasmus Anderson, the Calgary defenseman, kind of stood back and didn’t challenge Dvarus, and that’s what gave him the extra time and space and actually provided a little bit of a screen before Dustin Wolf got his glove on it. It’s not trusting your back hand, I guess. Doy breaks up a rush. Flames are forced back into their own zone. We plays it high to center, but intercepted and Doy gets it to Robertson. Robertson across the line left wing corner trying to play it in along the boards but unable to trap it there with Steven Loren. Flames are going to launch it high to center ice. Bouncing puck brought back in by Calgary. Good hit there by Benoa to tie his man up. And now Loren skating back the other way and getting it down into the zone. One hands it down into the corner. The Flames are able to free it up. Matt Coronado gets it out at center. Cole Farie gave the Flames a lead in the second period. Laid it deep into the Toronto zone. Long pass now for the Maple Leafs. Up on the right side for Ruah. Ruah turning back into the corner for Joshua. Joshua back to the net for Cowan. Cowan works down back to the point. Here’s McCabe. Far side. Long wrister taken there by Brandon Carlo. went wide trade into the corner trying to keep it in was McCabe but it comes out at center and slides into the leaf end and Carlo is back to retrieve the puck. Pass ahead in the midst of a ch or cowan in the midst of a change heading to the bench and the Leafs have it back in their own goal. Leafs two and the Flames two pass ahead for Tavvaris. Tavvaris swings in on the right side. Flips it off the boards trying to play it to himself down into the corner. Ball intercepted that and then has it go off the glass and over the boards and out of play. Faceoff coming in Calgary territory as a result. Dustin Wolf, the goalender to our left. Here’s a new contract that’ll be kicking in next year. And for Dustin Wolf, it’s a 7-year 7.5 AAV. It’ll give him the make him the 10th highest paid goalender of the National Hockey League. So they kind of marvelous year last year though, didn’t he? Yeah. And that’s a a pretty good number if you got a guy that could be your goalie of the future. Draw one by the Leafs. Riley played it into the corner. There’s a high stick and not sure. Oh, it looks like a leaf. No, it doesn’t. No, it’s going to be a Calgary flame. Number 44. 2 minutes for a high stick. Well, we talked about the importance of a power play goal and the timing of it. Is Hanley going to go? This is certainly one of those moments really in the third period. Matias Machelli. Yeah, it was right off the face off, Joe, that Machelli on Hanley tries to lift the stick and gets it up into the face area of Machelli. Javvarus will take the face off. Knander Matthews, nice and Riley and tripped up. There could have been another penalty. Now here’s Matthews stealing in a shot right. Tamaris hits the post on a backand set in front of the goalie. Score. A scramble and goender Wolf ended in the corner of the rink when the net was empty. And though Coleman attempted to play goal, I think he’s not very good at it. Well, what happens is Kevin Ball ends up falling on top of Dustin Wolf. Wolf had to slide from his right to his left to take time and space away from John Tavvaris. Puck went behind the net, but ball fell over his goalender and trapped him. But then Joe give credit to Austin Matthews. Extra effort to get behind the net, get the puck and slide it into the blue paint where Matthew Ny his fortune. Rashmus Anderson actually fans on a clearing attempt right in the crease. And Matthew Ny is able to score his second consecutive goal to get the Leafs their first lead of the night. Fourth goal of the season for Ny. Second goal by way of the power play. And the Leafs have their first lead of the game by a three-2 count. A pass up through the middle goes off Cowan. Cowan gets it down into the flame zone. Chasing hard after Bean but can’t come up with it. And the Leafs almost stole the puck as had it. But now back come the Flames. Get over the line on the left wing flipping it to the front of the net. A bouncing puck in front. It’s cleared away. Planes have to go back in their own zone to come away with it. Brought through center and backhanded by Zary into the lead. Stallars pumps it around the boards. And it’s going to roll down into Calgary territory. Good hustle by Robertson to steal it to Doy looking in front of the net for Lorenz. It didn’t connect. Doi comes out of the scrum. Back to the point to Morgan Riley. A shot to save made by Dustin Wolf. This line has been very good here. The Flames back the other way. Barabby has it taken away and Jy’s away to the races again. Left wing side. The Rams tried to find Robertson and then when it did arrive, Robertson’s weak shot handled there by goalender Wolf and it stops play. I think they’ve been the best line on the ice and one of the reasons is Max Stoi. I mean, we had, you know, they were caught on for the goal of the second period by the Flames, but Max Doi has had some jump, some purpose. He’s been more physical. Scored a goal. Scored a goal. what we saw there. Comes back, lifts his stick, gets a turnover, takes the puck back to the other end of the ice. And you’ll remember there was stretches last year where it was a combination of Roberts and Doli as well as Bobby McMahon. Now they’ve got Steven Loren in that line that they’d have some great stretches, four, five game stretches. Leafs win the faceoff and a wrist shot went off a leg and went wide as Ny got it away. And now the Leafs McCabe circling back in his own zone. NY’s looking for the hat-tick goal as he has scored twice in this one. Round back of the net. Rasmus Anderson got it ahead to center and the Leafs turn it back off a skate. NY’s trying to work in going to be a penalty here. He took his hand off the stick and pulled the Flames player down. And now Lawnberg is in challenging N a little bit. [Music] Not sure what Longberg was worried about getting the penalty here. It’s going to be a tripping penalty. Denise, but Longberg, give him credit. I mean, he is he plays every shift like it’s his last former Florida Panther. He was there for the first cup for Florida, but not a great penalty for the Leafs to take in the offensive zone when you got a onegoal lead in the third period. Two minutes for tripping. Going to call it tripping. Flames player went heavily into the boards in Anderson. Might have been more skate on skate, Joe. Although, yeah, you’re right. I mean, it did look like a hold. The stick came the glove came off the stick and there was a little tug on the shoulder. So, the Leafs have short. They gained the lead with a power play goal. The Flames trying to equalize. Anderson with a shot wired wide to the net. Back to the far point. Grabbed off there and brought in by Coronado. Back it goes to Anderson. Rasmus Anderson to the near side to Nasm Cadri. Former Leaf works to the halfboards. Cadri into the near corner. Looks to the go to the side of the net. Still no pass. It comes into the slot. Fired on the right wing side. Good block by Brandon Carlo. Kept in though by Calgary. Anderson to Cadri again in the near corner into the slot area and a wrist dot was blocked there on a good play by Steven Loren. Anderson again near side Cadri saucered back to Anderson. Anderson holds works to the right wing boards into the corner to Cadri. Cadri still with it. Back to the point to Anderson again. Anderson returns it to Cadri. Cadri top of the circle down into the corner. Centering pass intercepted there by Matthews and he spins and sends it down the ice. Great control by the Flames, but the Leafs have done a great job keeping pucks from getting to the net. Flames bringing it out at center again. Sharon Goic works in on the right side and stops up. Back to the point now to Haric onto the left wing circle. Back into the slot area now for Zary. Back to the point once more. They work it to the right wing side. get a shot in traffic. Spooked away there by Skolars and it’ll be wired out and down the ice by the Maple Leafs. 24 seconds left in the penalty. Flames working their way out. Work to center. Herrick works into the zone, but a bad pass is intercepted and easily sent by Nick Robertson down the ice who’s gaining a lot of penalty killing time for the Maple Leafs when in the lineup. Here are the Flames with it again. Working it in over the line. Tried to work it in. It was knocked by Goender Stars into the corner as the penalty denies is over. Brought out by Robertson. He is hit at the boards but can’t control the puck. It comes back on the left wing and Hubo gets it down into the zone only to have the Leafs turn it over and play it off the boards out at center. Flames regroup. Hanley to his defense partner and quickly ahead for Ryan Longboard. Lombberg sends it in over the line, but the Leafs intercept and Morgan Riley unable to find a forward. Had it handed back to him and then he sends it high off the glass down into the zone. Trapped by Tavvar into the corner. Pass back. It comes to Morgan Riley where shot was blocked and the Flames. Anderson will bring it to center. Rasmus Anderson with a long shoot him that Stallars is going to cautiously take that on the chest and stop play to bring a face off in the Toronto zone. 1128 to go third period. The Leafs have opened up a 3-2 lead on a power play goal is second of the game by Matthew Ny. You’re listening to Molson Leaf Hockey on TSN 1050 on the Maple Leafs radio network. Now Anderson did try to clear it, but Wow. That’s I think that’s that’s pretty tough ruling. Uh I would think as well Matthews to take the draw in the Leaf zone. Morgan Frost leaning in for the Flames, but the Leafs win the draw and it is launched high to center ice. Bobby McMahon had to try and stay on side. The Flames have to go back in their own zone. Ball for the Flames. Errant pass controlled by the Leaf defense in their own territory. Brandon Carlo gets it up on the wing and tripped. Wow. Okay. Bobby McMahon had the skates pulled right out from underneath them and there was no penalty which just one of the reasons why the Leafs only have 23 power play opportunities coming into this game. Mr. Rob, although they’ve had four here tonight. Play to the line and into the Toronto zone. Stolars gives it off ahead for Tavaris who turns the puck over the Flames in with a back hand. Knocked away by Oliver Ecman Larson. Long lead pass. Benoir chases it down. Got around the defense and parades into the corner after it. Knocks his man down, but he’s knocked down at the same time. Leaves with the defenseman trapped. Brought in over the line now by Faraby. Got it down into the corner and back to the blue line. Wager left wing side. Shot from an angle is blocked. Rebound cleared. Tavvaris looks to move it up ice. Tavaris ahead for N. Played it down into the zone. N with a pair of goals tonight. Twice he has had hatticks as the Leafs get it out at center ice and it’ll be shot by Calgary back into the Toronto end. Quickly played around on the boards. Myers gets it up off a stick and down into Calgary territory. Robertson hustling in there after it. Comes back to the point to Morgan Riley. Long shot blockered away by Wolf. Puck in the corner. Doy with it. Doy centers. Robertson couldn’t get a shot but has the rebound. Back to the point to Riley. Far side it goes. Kept in by Meyers. Back along the boards and into the slot now and dropped off by Doli to Riley closing with a shot in front of the net. batted there in front of the goal and a save made on Steven Lorren. Boy, you brought it up before, but this line is absolutely buzzed tonight. Riley back in his own zone as both teams get a change in flipped into the zone. Cowan trying to work the puck. Got it in front of the net. Still free and it goes knocked into the far boards. was unable to get to it was Dakota Joshua. Joshua being hounded, but now an errant pass by the Flames will turn into an icing with 8 minutes and 45 seconds to go in the third period. Leafs nursing a 3-2 lead. Right now, the Lies have outshot the Calgary Flames since the end of the first period. They’ve outshot Calgary 23-2. [Music] And would you agree maybe their best period and a half put together to date? [Music] Well, they certainly got more than a couple of lines going, that’s for sure. Just a little more energy than we’ve seen in the first 10 games. Played out at center ice for Cadri. He drops it back. Hubardo shot ramps off the stick of Morgan Riley and up into the screen. Out of play. A break in the action. 8 minutes and 31 seconds to play in the third period. Toronto 3, Calgary 2. You’re listening to Moltzen Leaf Hockey on TSN 1050 and the Maple Leafs radio network. Jay’s Alejandro Kirk has just popped out in the first inning in Los Angeles scoreless against Shi Atani and the Dodgers. That is so strange, right? The pitcher is going to come off the mound and get ready to lead off the ball game first. Well, in the old days, but he usually was hit in ninth. Yeah. Face off to the left in the leaf zone. Chopped into the slot area. Play laid off to the left wing side. It comes back to the point looking for Huberto. It goes down into the corner. Frost couldn’t come up with it. Off a skate and the Leafs have it out at center ice with Bobby McMahon. He’s going to ring the boards to the far side to Knander trying to chip it around back of the net. Willie trying to dig a loose puck free from Frost. Now Waguer gets it up on the wing for Hubardo. And Hubardo will find Cadri on the right wing and the Flames play it down into the Toronto in. Brandon Carlo up on the near boards for Knander. Knander dishes it off and Matthews instead of taking it out at center carries it back into his own zone to allow teammates to change. leaves back of the goal. Get it up on the boards. Too far for Tavvaris. Then he steals. He’ll shoot it into the left wing corner. NY providing pressure on Rasmus Anderson. That allows Tavvaris to intercept the pass and N can’t get a shot away but got it into the slot. The puck comes on the left wing side. Machelli a drive and off the blocker of Wolf. He covers up. Shot number 35 of the night for the Leafs. Think they hit the 40 shot mark once is a season high and yeah that came in the third game of the regular season at home against the Red Wings. They shot Detroit by a count of 40 to 15 but lost that game 3 to2. Draw to the right of Wolves. 715 to play in the third. Leafs up a goal. Three to two. Laid out at center ice to the Leaf zone and down into the near corner. Benois on a clearing attempt back at the net. It’s kicked free and into the near corner for N. He takes a glance but carries back and now runs into a traffic jam in along the boards in the near corner. Dug free by Benois. backhanded off the glass but not out. Backland keeps it in with a sharp fangle try that is covered up by Stallars and a face off coming in the Toronto zone. It’s a split second second decision, but you wonder why not carry it out? Why not go north with it instead of taking it back in a couple of feet and then all of a sudden you got the Hornets’s nest going again. Yeah. You don’t need to be an exciting player in your own end, do you? No, you don’t. I mean, it’s sometimes, you know, some guys are so good at that little 10-ft pass in your own zone, little bumper play to get it out, but sometimes that little bit of hesitation ends up costing you on the scoreboard as well. Draw one by the Flangs. Farboards. Cadri couldn’t trap it. It kept in at the right point. Perrick with a pass that is blocked. Fleets are able to get it out into the center ice area. That’ll force the Flames back before they shoot it right back in again. Near boards played out by Toronto. Flames on the far side with Jake Bean getting it ahead. CAD returns. The former Leaf will play it back into his own zone and hope for a return pass which he gets. He gets it down into the corner. McCabe took it away from him. Poked up on the wing for Wah. He plays it off the boards to the line but not out. Flames keep it in with a long shot. Stolar’s equal to the test there. Played again by Toronto. Out and down into Flames territory and they’ll go back with 550 to play in the third. Leafs three. Calgary two. Puck intercepted by Doi. Doi plays it off to Morgan Riley. Now to Meyers who fires it in. Doi plays it around the boards to the far side. Now Meyers pinches but can’t get to the puck and it’s cleared ahead by the Flames. They’ll get it to the Toronto Blue Line but not in. Brought back by Meyers. Up ahead it goes. A passing for Loren. And that was broken up and it is cleared off an official down into the Toronto zone. Meyers saucers it off to Morgan Riley. Back for Meyers, but the pass was a bad one. And it’s cleared in front of the net and they score. Whoa. What a horrible pass from Morgan Riley to his defense partner. And the Calgary Flames make them pay. Samuel Hunik with the tying goal. [Music] And it was well ahead of Philip Meyers and well behind the leaf forwards. Pass came from the leftwing boards to the left of Anthony Stolars to the right wing side. [Music] And everybody was heading towards the Calgary end and Flames pick it off. Michael Bachland who was guilty of the giveaway or the takeaway of Willie Dlander on the pull by Matthew Ny in the second period. He’s the one that steals this just throws it to the front of the net and the Flames walk in and tie this one for a third time. It’s 3-3. Leafs trailed one- nothing and two to one, but managed to take a 3-2 lead here in the third period before the Flames now have come back for the first time. And that is his first ever career NHL goal. Can’t believe played for the Vancouver Giants. [Music] 16th overall in the 2023 draft. Draw in the Calgary zone now deadlocked at threes. Matthews kicked the draw back then is able to recover it for McMahon who plays it into the far corner. Carlo pinches, bats the puck back of the goal. Flames have touched it and that allows McMahon to clear it into the corner and around back of the net for Knander. Knander knocked down on the play. Could have been a penalty there, I would have thought. Then a wrist shot from an angle is blocked and the Flames are going to carry it out at center ice and play it down into the Toronto end. Leafs three, the Flames three. 4 and 1/2 minutes to go. Third period and there have been more than a few goals as we’re going to get an icing call here against Toronto that have come with bad turnovers at both sides. Yeah. But they’re protecting a onegoal lead on home ice. You don’t expect that right in your own end from one of your veteran defenseman. And it almost looked like he he changed his mind mid pass. You don’t whether he was going to try to go up the right wing boards or go to Philip Meyers and ended up splitting the difference and it was picked off. Backlin sets it up. Hanzik with the equalizer. We’re tied at three. Puck down in back of the Toronto goal. Coronado trying to center. It comes back to the right point. Weaguer sends it around back of the net out of the reach of Connor Zerry and the Leafs trying to come up with it and do and now brought out by Machelli. Machelli shoots the puck in. Oliver Ecman Larson had ideas of chasing after it but thinks better of it. Flames work it back out into the center ice area and it’ll be deposited by Joel Farabby into Toronto’s end. Oliver Ecman Larson with it now. Up ahead it goes to Cowan. Cowan to center. Diagonal shooting into the right wing corner into the forch check. Puck comes around on the boards for Cadri. Cadri is able to play it to an open wing. His defense will get there to control and they’ll play it out at center but the Leafs intercept. Back for Cowan. Cowan in on the left wing with a weak shot that was deflected wide. Far side trying to keep it alive to Cota Joshua but he has it taken away. Flames back at center. Rasmus Anderson to Cadbury a shot blockered away by goalender Anthony Stolards. Leafs will shoot it down and get a change. Under three minutes to play in the third. Puck in the near corner. Cowan on for a long shift here. gets it to Cadri in front of the net. Rather to Doy after it went by Cadri and a shot by Doi is smothered by Dustin Wolf. 244 to play third period. We’ve seen a fewer. Yeah, we’ve seen a few in his career. Yeah, most recently Saturday night. Draw to the right. Tavvarus wins it. Doi gets it back along the boards. Doi knocked down but got it back towards the blue line and then it’s poked out at center and N is there. Doy on the line with NY and Tavvaris. Flipped to the line. N couldn’t carry it in deep. Cleared back out into neutral ice. Leafs play it ahead. N and Tvaris will bat it down into Calgary territory. 219 to play in the third. Lanes get it high. Knocked down there by McKay, but he knocked it down with his chest. The play goes on. Nice to shoot by Doby. Heads up play by Jake McCain. Doesn’t use his glove, uses his chest. And yet, if you’re on the Calgary side of it, Joe, you’re saying that’s as bad a giveaway as the one that tied the game. tried to go out the middle of the ice. McKay blocks it and eventually it’s a little give and go between Max Doi and Matthew Ny and Max Doi Tvaris is going to get an assist as well. for a second. You could see thought of giving it back to Ny going to the front of the net but looked up picked the far side on Wolf and Max doi has a twogoal game and the Leafs have a 4-3 lead with 204 to go in regulation. Second goal of the game. Leafs play it down into the zone. Wol out of the cage to get it up on the wing to Rasmus Anderson. Minute 55 to go and we’ll see when Wolf is coming out of the net. A shot is stopped by Stallar. There’s a scramble in front of the net. Cleared into the corner and it’s cleared by the Maple Leafs to center ice. Anderson goender Wol still in the cage. Played to the far boards. Knander out fights his man to force it to the far away. Land Anderson with it again dropping it back. And now Wolf edging out of the goal. There he goes for the extra attacker. Lee’s come up with it. Looking at the empty net was McKay. He got it to the wad. He didn’t shoot it. Played down into the zone. Stallars trying to play it out. Gets it down into the zone, but it’s going to be an icing. I thought for a moment we was looking at the empty net, too. We’ve never seen one, have we? Nope. I’ve never seen gold in the empty net. Nope. [Music] I I’ I’ve been in goal when goalies scored into the empty net. I just happened in the corner of the rank at the time. Yeah, you were playing the pass. Yeah, I was looking for the breakup, Mr. Ralph. I was looking for the breakup. A timeout being called here by Calgary. Yeah, Nicholas Wah had an opportunity the right wing side, but just that little hesitation. touch. Jake McCabe was right in the middle of the ring and if you’re going to, you know, give it a an effort there, you probably got a pretty good angler. Yeah. And he didn’t seem to have any traffic in front of him when he had the chance to shoot it. But what do you think this does for Max Doniy’s confidence by what was it? Nine goals last year, which was low. Almost hit 30 with Montreal a few years ago. So, you know, that’s there. that’s in the arsenal. But his his overall game tonight, Joe, that that line has been outstanding. They have hustled for checked extraordinarily well. Huge face off here. The Leafs, by the way, outshooting the Flames now 37-28. [Music] Austin Matthews will take the face off for the Maple Leafs. And Wah is out there as well. Bobby McMahon. The puck is one. Leafs send it off the boards and out at center ice. Flames have to go back to their own blue line. Laid off on the right wing side by Per and then shot in. Stoolars couldn’t trap it. Up against the boards. Elites get it into their skates but can’t make a play. Back of the net again. Losing his angle there as the centering pass intercepted. Rolled out and towards the empty net, but it’s curling wide. That was was that Brandon Carlo? I believe it was. By the way, as we look at both Matthew Knives and Max Stony and Dgo Knights, Brandon Carlo has not scored as a member of the Leafs. Might have be as close as he’s done right there. Right there. Yep. Nice and Tavaris assisting on the doy goal or on the doy goal to get the Leafs the lead. Flames with the win on the face off. Perrick gets it along the boards to Cadri. Cadri holds back to the defenseman. Perrick to the far side. Six on five here. Flames along the boards with Cadri. Cadry looking with a shot. Blocked. Big rebound in front of the goal. Played off the boards by the Leafs, but it won’t clear. Parent keeping it in. Cadry again on the near wall. Has difficulties with it. The Leafs trying to kick it out at center and they do as Bobby McMahon gets it down to the blue line with a dozen seconds left. Lane shooting it back in. Round on the boards first. Harlo trying to pin it. There is Matthews. Punch still free with 3 seconds left. They’ll get it out and that’ll do it. [Music] [Applause] The Maple Leafs withstand the last couple of minutes of pressure. And a twogoal night from a couple of guys, Max Doy and Matthew Ny is the difference in a 4-3 victory. Yeah, I’m sure the coaches of both sides are going to be happy with the efforts on the forjack, but a number of giveaways were really responsible for the majority of the seven goals. I mean, you can talk about being tenacious in the for check and everything else, but uh both teams guilty of coughing the puck up at times. Uh give the lease credit. I I thought after another tough first period, I mean, 0 for three in the power play. You think was that the opportunity to take hold of this game? Calgary scores first. Uh you give the Leafs credit for battling back. I think despite the goals against and the giveaways that led up to them in the last two periods, um I think it might have been the best 40 minutes they put together this season. And um you know some unlikely sources and Max Doi with a twogoal game. Matthew N was great and even the uh you know we we talked about it earlier the um Doi Lorent and Nick Robertson line. Um, we saw that line with Bobby McMahon joining uh Doi and Nick Roberts and having some moments last year and um Craig Brew may have found something with the trio adding Loren to that mix. So, there’s going to be some more lineup adjustments, one would think, but I agree. I mean, you you have something to work with there. Nick Robertson played strong game. Yeah. Now, we did see East Cowan in the third period uh wasn’t out
