Nov. 8: Postgame Interviews

Dylan, what was the mindset on the uh on the bench when the review was happening? Yeah, I mean, you know, obviously you called in doorway. We thought that um you know, Everly Skate took out host stick there and um you know, we thought that based on the rule that could be goal interference, but obviously the refs didn’t didn’t see it that way. So, you know, as a group, we kind of got to we got to bounce back from that. But um you know, can’t be giving up a goal that late in the game. You know, that’s on that’s on all of us on the ice and uh we got to do a bit of a habit of that last year. So, we got definitely got to clean that up. What you think about just the way you guys played up until that point? Yeah, I mean, first period I thought we were really good. Second period we kind of took our our foot off the gas a little bit and then, you know, third period I thought we were playing stingy hockey and, you know, guys are battling and, you know, trying to get that two points. So, um, there’s some lot of good from that game, but also a lot of stuff we need to work on. Team blocked a lot of shots. You blocked a bunch as well and you took the one up high there from Parea. Where did that get you and how did you feel coming back from it? Yeah, I mean, uh, it got me kind of like right in the ribs there. Um, yeah, obviously didn’t feel great, but, uh, it was one of those ones where it just kind of winded me and it’s going to be a bruise, but at the end of the day, it’s not too bad. So, um, yeah, I felt fine coming back after that. Is that tough? Is that a tough thing to come back from the u the review and then the call your way and like two two seconds later, you’re in overtime. Mentally, how do you respond? Yeah, it’s definitely a mental challenge. Um, you know, but I like I like the mental uh ability of our group. So, I think that’s uh that’s something we that we can definitely learn from and you know, it’s kind of the kind of our motto. Can’t get too high, can’t get too low. You know, uh calls like that are out of our control. So, no matter what, we got to keep uh you know, keep an aggressive mindset and um yeah, I think it’s definitely something to learn from. Does something like that even make it more confusing what goalie interference is? Yeah, I mean, a little bit. Um I mean, I don’t know the exact definition of the rule, but I feel like I’ve seen calls um go the other way with that kind of situation. So, I mean, foot in the crease takes away a stick. Um, you know, I feel like I’ve seen that called the other way before. So, uh, it’s definitely a bit of a gray area and, uh, just unfortunate that we couldn’t get that call. It was Joe Hoffer tonight and just his story the past couple games how he’s bounced back very well. Yeah, I mean, he’s an incredible goalender. He worked so hard. Um, he was our best player against Buffalo and, you know, very well-deserved shut out. He made a lot of big saves for us there and then tonight again, I thought he was great making lots of big saves. So, um, you know, I feel like we need to help him out a bit more, help both our goalies out a bit more. I think we can play better defensively and um yeah, our goalie our goalie tennis is great and I think uh you know they’re really stepping up for us. How do you think Kyu responded after uh missing last game being a healthy scratch? Yeah, I thought he was great. I thought he was great tonight. Um you know he he possesses a a skill ability that not a lot of guys have. So he’s definitely a very valuable guy in our in our room and um yeah, it was great that he got that that big goal for us there in the third and um yeah, like I like Ruse a lot as a player. I think he’s awesome. So uh he bounced back quite in a good way. kind of lens play was develop. Do you feel like there was some interference there? Obviously, I mean, yeah, my uh my stick got got hit there. Um I just didn’t know if if the guy was in the crease or not. Um I saw the jumbo that he was, so I don’t know like what the I don’t know what the rule is. I don’t know. I don’t know. I thought the rule was that if the guy’s in the crease, then it’s no goal. Or if he stops me from making a save, like I don’t know. I don’t know what their uh thought process was on that, but um yeah, I’ll leave it at that. We just got an email from the league that said uh he did not impede your ability to to make the stop. Do you feel I mean like I I mean I don’t know like if my stick’s there. Um who knows if it hits my shaft. Like who knows if it hits my blocker. Like I guess nobody knows. It’s like um I thought the only ground rule was if you know if he was in the crease and he did and um I mean like I said nobody knows but like you can’t can’t be making um you know assumptions if it’s going to hit me or not you know like nobody really knows. So when I went to review and you got a chance to look at it were you feeling confident that it was going to get called back at that time? I mean, I was like, I’d say I was over 50% that I was um confident, but yet I was still trying to um stay focused cuz I mean, nobody really knows nowadays, you know. Um yeah, there’s a lot of I mean, I feel like every other week there’s something that um that there’s always debate on, you know, that’s that’s kind of how the rule is. But yeah, Jim, you got a goalie in there and a couple players that seem pretty confused about what goal is. What are your thoughts after what you saw? We were certain on the bench that we were going to win the game because the criteria for goalie interference is first the player has to be in the blue paint. Then he has to impede the goalie from playing his position. His left skate hits our goalie stick. And when he hits his goalie stick, his arm has to come in. He cannot use his blocker because of Everly’s foot hitting his stick and turning his arm in. The puck goes in on the blocker side. So, we understand we’ll get a ruling from the league uh on it. Um but for us, it meets all the criteria for goalie interference. If it was not, if this was at 5 minute mark, we would have challenged it. That’s how certain we were. Jim, we got an email from the situation room that says he did not impede his ability to play the puck. How do you think they come to that conclusion? Um I I don’t know. I I I do wonder if they have a goalender, an ex-goalie in the in the room. Um because um our goalie coach and the goalie explanation to me, I’m not an ex-goalie, is that it does impede your ability to use your blocker. The on ice officials give you an explanation or did that is that going to come later from the situation? That comes later from the situation, Drew. You know, other than that, just how do you feel like seemed like there were es and flows to the game? Good first period. Maybe it got away from you a little bit in the second, then regrab in the third, I guess. Yeah, good first, poor second. Third was even. Um, you know, we did some good things in the third. Um, you know, I I thought that, uh, from the 8 minute mark on, we didn’t really give them much. We had another chance to end the game with a torpochenko chance at the, you know, to make it a two-goal game at the netfront. Um, so you know, it was a back and forth NHL game. For Stevenson’s goal on the face off, what went into having the beet out there? We weren’t allowed to change. We iced the puck, so we’re not allowed to change. So, we iced the puck three times, I believe, in that and we had two opportunities in the game from just before the red line. It’s an open net. Like, the game should be over. Yeah, I was just going to ask you about that six on five PO had a chance and then it winds up being iced again. Just any way you could have played that differently. I don’t remember the Praco one. I remember Thomas had one just missed the net and Sudter I think had one. Am I maybe I’m wrong? I don’t know. Got knocked down and stayed in the zone. Oh, okay. Um yeah, I mean that clearing attempt, you know, I think we’re we’re just trying to clear the zone uh because the amount of time and we had layers in the uh in the offensive zone uh in the neutral zone, you know, um you’d like it to be a cleaner play, but you know, I’d have to look at the tape to have a better answer for you. Did you get a respon a good response from Kyrie tonight? Yeah, I thought, you know, he let us in shots. He let us in shot attempts. Thought he was skating well. I thought he responded well and you know what could have been the game-winning goal in the first period. He has the forch check before Holloway’s goal. He is draws a penalty. Are those signs you’re seeing when he’s not scoring that he’s there? Yes. Like when I talk about he gives opponents anxiety. It’s his speed. Not only carrying the puck and shooting the puck, but when he’s checking like that. Why did the game get away from you there a little bit in the second period? What wasn’t happening? Well, I think they um they played to the goal line. We had we turned the puck over way too much. Um at the at the offensive blue line, we had 10 turnovers in the second period. Um that’s us not willing to work uh offensively for opportunities. They had better gaps than they had in the first period. So, they played better. Uh we played into their hands. Um you know, got to get better from it. Yeah, the power play towards these passes to the net front. Is that something that opens up with teams respecting us one time early or uh No, I think it’s just uh our power play moved the puck really well. It was on and off our tape and when it got over to him from I believe 17 Fowler, it’s an automatic if he doesn’t have a one-time to try and put it right back door where Snugaroo is. I thought Snugroot had the goal. I didn’t know it was I don’t know how it went in then night to walk away with a loss but um Joel Hoer it seems like he’s really turned the corner the last couple games like the sign the way he’s playing. Yeah, I think um you know Buffalo obviously he pitched a perfect game and tonight he gave us an opportunity to win.

Hear from Joel Hofer, Dylan Holloway and Jim Montgomery media about a 4-3 OT loss to Seattle and the goalie interference review in the closing seconds.

  1. St. Louis should’ve won this game. They should consider this a win. They got a point odds were stacked against them and they still should’ve won, And almost did , be proud.

  2. It sucks that this happened, but let's be honest, period 2 lost you the game. Once again, we failed to play a complete game. Is there a limit on how many healthy scratches you can have, because we'd probably have a lot for our next game.

  3. The Blues really have made their own bed in a bad way too often so far this year..That being said ,they can't get a break often either and to win in hockey more times than not, you've got to get some puck luck and some calls.

  4. Regardless of other things the Blues "should have or shouldn't have done," that's some bullshit out of Toronto. Feel. They felt he "couldn't" make the save. Nonsense, you don't Know that–goalies make unbelievable saves all the time. If the boxes for an infraction are ticked, get out of here with your Nostradamus act. Feel. 🙄

  5. Way to many L's this way. It seems to be a repeating theme….. Time to Keep the good Stock (50) sell the farm and MOOOOVE along! To many L's That way something needs to change and its not the coach this time.

  6. Buchnevich is playing horrible monty watch the video 5 giveaways in our D zone and 3 out of it in the o zone he's killing us watch the dam tape sit him just like you did kyrou

  7. Besides controlling the puck, cleanly, and not giving it away…physical rotations on ice have been horrendous, between transitional or whether it's defensive pressure. Way too many opportunities in front of the net. It's killing us and it's been leading to unlucky goals. C'mon boys, this is your profession.

  8. Hofer is 100% right It's not the job of Montreal to assume whether something may or may not have went in, the worst blown call I've seen in years, come on Montreal get your sh@t together.
