Drake Maye: “It’s Been a Journey.” | Patriots Press Conference

Start with Dan Roach in the back. All right. It’s first question every time. Hi Drake. What’s going on? Karen’s not here. That’s all. Gotcha. Uh other than Miles Garrett, how was your day? Uh and how was the offense and what you like guys did? We left some out there in the red zone. True. That’s good defense. You know, I thought we moved the ball well. Um defense helped us out. They played God, they played their um they played a great game. So, uh yeah, I think we we we uh when we did when they did four turnovers, we scored off them, which was good to see. I think we left some out there in the red zone, but um you know, we ran the ball. We threw it some and um we got had the one turnover me and the one with Trayvon at the end. So, we got to you know, learn from that. But, uh yeah, they’re good defense. They’re good up front. They get that after the passer and I got to do a better job of getting the ball out and and knowing the knowing the kind of what mode I’m in to get it out. toward the middle. Drake, did it feel like that Josh was kind of the way he called plays at the beginning of the uh of the second half kind of some cleverness, some creativity that kind of opened things up for you guys? And was that something that that was a a little bit of a conversation in in locker room at halftime? Yeah. No, he was uh you know, his demeanor in halftime was you know, he could tell that um you know, he was calming us down and knew that we were good and um yeah, just classic you know, uh Coach McDaniel’s drive. I mean, he’s just uh you know, you know, dialing it up and um you know, multiple times and getting guys open and uh really making it easy for me. So, uh you know, he’s done his whole life and you know, I feel like he’s you know, put on the surf off coordinator. So, it was uh it’s fun to, you know, be in the headset with him. Mike Gardy in the front row. Drake, after your long run, uh the crowd started chanting MVP, MVP. Next play, you throw the 39 yard touchdown pass to Kahan. More of the same. Did you hear it? What’s your reaction to it? No, I didn’t hear it. Um the guys were making fun of me about my slide um back in the huddle on the long run. Um so I didn’t hear but the fans have been been awesome all season. It’s been really cool to um really to see the difference from from last year to to this year. Um man, it’s been a uh it’s been a journey and um you know they’ve been through it and they’ve been you know the fans have been through it the last couple years. Um so it’s just you know credit to them and um we did the intros today for the first time so we didn’t know how that would go. That was pretty cool. Um but uh no the fans have been awesome. Like I said, I think the, you know, best fans in the league and they continue to show out every week. Drake, I’m curious with the two touchdowns today, one to Hunter and one to Stefon Diggs. First with the Hunter one, getting him the ball on National Tight ends day. Just what did that mean? And then with that second one to Stefon Diggs, finally getting him the ball uh in the end zone as a Patriot. Just those on those two. Yeah, they mentioned um you know something to me this week Hunter and Hoop did about national you know tight end day and um you know glad big hoop had a had a big catch you know a couple big catches and then um Hunt had one at the end you missed him a few times um I’ve been missing him a lot throughout the throughout the year so it was good to see him get in there and then Steph was you know we’ve been joking about him um the other day that um you know Casey um Kavon Chasan had more touchdowns than Steph did so u finally Steph got in there and got one so it was Kyle to the middle. Drake, can you walk us through your touchdown to Kahan Booty and whether there was any advantage you guys gained by going formation to boundary on that play? Yeah. Um, you know, really were just trying to um, you know, we worked into the boundary and you know, Kahan liked it um, you know, on that side. We worked on that side during the week, so we just kept it that side and um, you know, he made a great uh, great move on him and just trying to give him a chance. Uh, thought I overthrew it again, but uh, you know, he made a nice adjustment to it and a great catch. Chris Ryan, front row. Drake, obviously the number one ranked defense in the league. What did you learn about kind of yourself and how you had to adapt through the course of this game and make plays, end up with, you know, statline that you would like uh despite some adversity in the game? Yeah, just bouncing back, you know, threw early interception and uh we talked about all week kind of this what they they strived on their defense, keeping their offense in good positions and he was looking downfield and um you forgot the guy in front of me could jump, you know, so uh he picked it, but uh you know, nice play by him, but just battling back from adversity. This is that league um you know, one of the best players on the edge and you know, maybe the best player in the league on the edge. Um so just battling back and continue to you know run it and play action and boot and um just trying to keep the defense um offense um trying to you know be unpredictable on offense and I think coach you know caught a great game and um you know good to you know handle adversity and come out of halftime and you know score three touchdowns in third quarter was big. Last last question Mike Reese in the front row Drake you you had mentioned about the pregame introductions. Um coach Rael mentioned a chance to create more energy in the stadium and sort of get the fans maybe engaged in that moment. I’m I’m curious. Did you feel that like a a difference with those introductions and what was your thought being the last guy out there? Yeah, I thought it was um you know, I was nervous a little bit nervous for it. You know, you always see other teams do it and um you know, I got no really no swag. So, I just you know, go out there and run. Um but I think uh I think the guys enjoyed it. I think it was cool kind of hanging back there in the back being the last one. I think the first like 10 guys, they had the wrong names running out. We run out too fast. So, I think we’ll work on it. But, uh I think the fans I think it was new for them too. So, they probably have to adjust to it maybe next time. Um, you’ll be ready for it, but I thought they’re all loud. I think it’s, you know, really loud every time they do the call outs. Um, but uh, you know, that’s it. So, thank you guys. Thank you.

  1. They didn’t play well today and won by 19. That’s an incredibly positive sign. Your QB is sacked 6 times, you turn it over twice and you win by 19. That’s impressive. Winning when it’s ugly is crucial in the NFL.

  2. Drake Maye is the true future of the New England Patriots, he keeps progressing every week, and good plays by the opposing defense don't hurt his positive attitude and energy. He just gets back in there and says "hike" and gets on with the program. Let's Go Pats!

  3. I think Tom Brady maybe should reconsider what he told Robert Kraft when he introduced himself to him. Picking him (Tom Brady) was the Greatest Decision this Organization ever made. The initial take on Drake Maye could turn out to be even greater. What do you think Tom?

  4. If drafting Tom Brady was the best decision that Rob Kraft and the Pats made, then the 2nd best decision is undoubtedly drafting Drake Maye. Kid is a beast. He isn’t even close to reaching his ceiling yet.
