Matthew Stafford, Rams outclass depleted 49ers in tough Week 10 division loss | NBC Sports Bay Area
This is 49ers postgame live brought to you by Toyota. That is Matt Mayoko. He is Rod Brooks. I am Carlos Ramirez. There comes a point, Matt, where you just look at a game, watch a game, and say, “This team’s better. These this team doesn’t have enough manpower.” And even if they did, this team’s just better. That’s what it felt like today for the Rams and the 49ers. I I’ll say specifically, the Rams offense is a heck of a lot better than the 49ers defense. I mean, look at the Rams offense. 31 first downs in this game and they only had to use three downs nine times. So in other words, they were getting first downs on first down and second down and they were even rarely got to third down. So this was just a clinic and the 49ers had no answers defensively. Offense did their job today, but they started in a 21 nothing hole. And the Niners as a whole, we know what they’re missing. We know how good the Rams are. You have to be on point every step of the way. three turnovers, but really two turnovers uh cost the Niners the game, the stop on fourth and one in the red zone and then the the turnover by Jawan Jennings. Those turnovers, the penalties, all of that led to the Niners being in a hole and their offense just simply couldn’t dig them out. I mean, the Niners scored 26 points, which is the number of points they scored when they beat the Rams in week five in overtime. In overtime. Yeah. And and we saw, I think, two faces, a very Harvey Dentl like offense for the Rams, Matt. The first half was very much Nakua and Devonte Adams, very low 13 personnel, but then the second half they went tight and heavy and the 49ers have no answer for that set so far this season. It it just looked like everything the Rams did worked and the 49ers were always like a step behind, always playing catchup. The the defensive front, I mean, we knew this was going to be an issue with the 49ers just simply being able to put pressure on the quarterback. They could not do that. and back on the back end. You know, the guys are running wide open and so whatever they tried to do, whether the Rams wanted to play smashmouth football and and hit the 49ers in the face, they did that. If they wanted to spread it out and throw the ball down the field, they were able to do that as well. You know, we’re obviously not having a lot of guys Bosa, most notably Fred Warner, that doesn’t make up for the fact that the Niners missed tackles, way too many of them, and the confusion in coverage was absolutely evident. So, I mean, yes, the Rams are better. The Niners are not in a good position, especially defensively with their injuries, but there was some lapses as far as the way that certain guys played and the way that the defense played that you just can’t have if you’re trying to pull a major upset, and it would have been a major upset today. It would have been time for more reaction. Let’s go live to Levi Stadium with Laura Britt and Jennifer Lee Chan. Ladies, yeah, Carlos, this started out as a very lopsided game from the first drive of the game. If you look up and down the stat sheet, the Rams had the advantage in every statistical category. I think right now the defensive injuries, they’re catching up to the 49ers. Mike Williams, of course, went out last week and at this point it just seems those injuries almost are too much against the number one passing offense in the NFL. Absolutely. And when Robert Salah kind of got fancy in Houston, it was really ineffective. They were a little bit more simple last week and it worked again this week because Tatum Bthoon D. Winter is both injured, they went into their dime package a lot and it didn’t work out very well. I think when Robert Sal keeps it more simple, it works a little bit better, but I know the injuries to those linebackers really affected the game. Yeah, Matthew Stafford able to spread the ball around efficiently. He had four receiving targets, score touchdowns today. They ran with a lot of tight ends today and that was productive for them. Meanwhile, the 49ers limited in the run game today. Just 74 yards on the ground. We all know that Kyle Shanahan offense typically utilizes the run game quite a bit and today just limited to 74 yards. Yes. And they didn’t they weren’t on the right side of the calls either. Several DPI calls, especially two on Jawan Jennings that should have been called, not called. George KD seemed to have been set when that penalty was offsetting. If that was not offsetting penalties, they would have had a first down, not leading to the interception. But, you know, should have, would have, could have. So, a lot of opportunities missed here for the 49ers. I mentioned that stat sheet. That was a glaring statistical uh difference between the Rams and the 49ers. The Rams with zero penalties, the 49ers, seven penalties for 45 yards. If you are looking for a positive today, George KD able to get more involved in the offense today and the Cardinals took a beating from the Seahawks. Of course, the 49ers headed to Arizona next week. Carlos, great points, ladies. Thank you, Laura. Let’s overreact. Your reactions brought to you by Toyota, the QB comp. Listen, Mac. Jones again, only six incompletions. 85% completion percentage uh driving it downfield. Rod, 8.3, 8.2 yards uh per attempt. The interception uh on a moment of desperation looking to get something downfield. Should the 49ers and we have this reaction from Richard Sherman. I just don’t see this. I just don’t see how Cal will be able to take M. Jones off the field with how he’s playing. This is Richard Sherman. I know Rocky has to start if he’s healthy, but this is a hot hand situation right now and Mack is rolling, not trying to spark controversy, but this is an obvious observation. Either way, Mack has made himself a lot of money and will be starting somewhere next season. He is under contract for one more year for the 49ers. So, now we overreact. Rod Brooks, should the 49ers keep rolling with M. Jones? No, it’s going to be Brock Pury, but it doesn’t matter what I think anybody else thinks. If Brock Purie is healthy enough to play, which I’m sure they will deem him to be healthy enough to play next week, he’s going to play. It’s I mean, all credit to M. Jones and what he was able to do. It’s been fantastic. He’s the story of the season. But Brock Pie is going to play. It’s not even a question. No, it’s not a question. And and that’s I know what you’re saying. What I’m saying as well, taking nothing away from Matt Jones at all. I mean, he just did everything he possibly could. He had a heck of a game today. The 49ers offensive line kept him well protected. He delivered the ball. He was decisive. He did not take a sack in this game. He played exceptionally well. And while he’s been the quarterback of the 49ers, the starting guy, the 49ers are five and three. But Brock Pury is Brock Pie. Brock Purie is the guy that the 49ers anointed as their quarterback, their franchise guy. when he’s ready to go, he’s going to go and everything that it sounds like heading into next week is the 49ers feel like there’s a really good chance that he’ll be cleared and ready to play against the Cardinals. I guess the question Rod would be and this is a question for the three of us of the future for next week and the week after future us. I think if Brock Perie underperforms against Arizona in the desert and then he faces Monday Night Football uh the Panthers here in Santa Clara and again has a dud of a game then we have a controversy and and that’s the direction I wanted to go in. I think his leash is going to be much longer than two games. It will have to be a situation where Brock Pury is clearly regressing. The offense is regressing because of Brock Pertie’s hypothetical regression as we’re talking about a possible uh future. It would have to be that type of situation and the situation would be have to be absolutely untenable for the Niners possibly in the midst of a playoff birth again in this very hypothetical situation for the Niners to go. We’re going to sit down a $53 million man and go to Brock Pury. That’s the hypothetical future starting next week. Yes, it’s Brock Pur’s team. It’s no question. Yeah. Yeah. And I mean, we’re going to continue with the hypotheticals here. Sure, why not? It’s, you know, for next year it is Brock Purie. There’s nothing that can happen from this point to the end of the season that gets the 49ers to go off of Brock Pury. Now, if the aggravation of the toe continues, if it’s if there’s an issue there, I could see them at some point shutting him down. But that’s if he aggravates it because they feel like quite clearly what M. Jones has proven. He’s a really good quarterback. And the other part that I would disagree with with Richard Sherman is I don’t know that a team’s going to give the 49ers a first round draft pick to to acquire M or a second. So I think that M. Jones will be the the backup for the 49ers next season. I don’t think he’ll be a starter in the NFL in 2026. I think the compensation would have to be so humongous. The the the I I just I mean to me I I know this is our job. It’s what we’re supposed to be doing. This doesn’t make any sense because it doesn’t have anything to do with right now in the not too distant future. The bigger issue for the Niners is that they have a defense that must be protected and it must be protected by the offense. And today against a very good Rams team, the Niners offense was unable to protect the Ner’s defense because they got into a 21- nothing hole. All right, they didn’t make the Rams punt until their third until their fourth possession and the Rams only punt it twice the entire game and the Rams were five for five in the red zone. If the Niners defense can’t get off the field, can’t get stops and get the ball back to the offense, doesn’t matter if Brock Purie is playing quarterback, doesn’t matter if M. Jones is playing quarterback, doesn’t matter if Steve Young is playing quarterback. You have a a defense that is hurt, has confusion on the back end and is going to be food for a lot of team. All right, we got to get some field vision here on the show. This is brought to you by Zeni, the official eyewear of the San Francisco 49ers. This man has a field vision that is right now perhaps the best in the National Football League at 37 years old. Matt Matthew Stafford is we said it on pre we reiterate here on post he if you ask me right now I think he should be the number one MVP candidate over Mahomes over Josh Allen who put a dud against the Taylor. Uh but this man is playing out of his mind. Well he is but let’s face it the 49ers made it really easy on him. how they make it easy on him by not putting pressure on him. There’s really only the one time when Clea Davis and Keon White uh teamed up for a sack. And there was on that same drive, the only drive, I think, of the first half or the first drive anyway, where the the Rams had to punt, you know, there was good pressure that got home on a blitz that forced an incompletion, but I think the Forers made it really easy on him by not applying pressure to him and also by letting guys run wide open down the field. So again, really good job by Matthew Stafford. He has a stat sheet to show it, but the 49ers did nothing to supply any resistance in this game. The the you know, since the Rams have gone on this heater over these past three or four games, the Niners are clearly the best team that they’ve played. So I give Matthew Stafford and the entire offense a lot of credit. Stafford is a very good quarterback. He’s got a very good offensive line in front of him. He’s got weapons on each side. He’s got a very good running back behind him. and Kairen Williams. And you were talking about in pregame and kudos to you. That three tight end lineup is absolutely working for the Rams. So until that is stopped, they’re going to keep running that bad boy out. Yeah. It’s not a trend anymore. I mean, it’s something they do and they do well. And I think what it does for them is it gives such a a safety blanket for Stafford. If he gets pressured, he can just dink it and dunk it wherever he wants. He goes up there, Matt, in absolute complete control of what’s happening. And he has the answers to the test all the time. Yeah, I mean what I just feel like the Rams were a step ahead in everything they did in this game. And you know, obviously the 49ers were prepared for all this, but it’s a lot easier preparing, you know, on a on a chalkboard, right? I don’t think they use chalkboards anymore. Maybe they do, maybe. Maybe they do, but it’s it’s easier to prepare in a classroom than it is when when you’re facing those situations. the Rams can play that that smashmouth football and then when they’re not in the three tight end sets and you know Devonte Adams left the game late in the game and they really went to that three tight end set just to smash the 49ers in the face. But you know when when it’s Nikua and and Devonte Adams out there with Kairen Williams doesn’t matter who who the other eligibles are you know the other two eligibles and a lot of times it is the two tight end guys but they just had all the answers in this game. Let’s talk about the 49er defense. That unit today was in serious problems from the get-go. They allowed 275 passing yards, 126 on the ground, 31 first downs, only a sack, eight QB hits, no INTs, which at this point is not a fluke. I mean, they restarted another hopefully it’s not a 14 game, but they restarted the clock on the no in situation after that one they had a couple games ago. But today, Rod, it was permissive. The NerS have more dropped almost interceptions than they do actual interceptions over the course of the season. Think about it. Um I think I mentioned this earlier. The Rams were perfect in the red zone. Um the Rams had what 180 yards of offense in the first quarter. Uh which led to that 21 nothing hole that the Niners uh got into. I I couldn’t help but watching the game think the Niners would be much better equipped to handle Stafford and this Rams offense if Fred Warner were out there as he was out there in week five and and they’re they’re almost powerless to do anything against an offense that good against a quarterback like Matthew Stafford in full. You need guys who are his equal. Fred Warner is his equal. Bosa is his equal. I’m actually surprised that they the the stat sheet had him with eight hits in the quarterback is it just didn’t feel to me like Stafford was rattled at all or he was anything but really comfortable basically from the opening drive to the very end of this game. That’s a great point. Quick break here on the show. We’re just getting started. This is 49ers postgame live. When we come back on the other side, the head coach Kyle Shanahan stops by with his postgame presser. This is Postgame Live brought to you by Toyota.

outclass? must be nice to be a team who doesn’t have 13 injuries.. please.. outplayed not outclassed
We don’t have the personnel on defense and blown penalties call for the referee.
One sports talking head said we’ll beat the Cardinals next week. I wouldn’t be so sure. I’m seeing another 6-11 season. Next year, too. Why should next season be any different?! 😂
So beating a depleted team is something to be proud of huh?? Pathetic haha 😄
How does one vend tacos and audially crap on live TV at the same time
1:00 "THE STOPPA" –some evil nobody
Your own GM doesn’t give a fk so why anyone else give a fk!?
49ers were too hampered, I get it. But zero penalties by the Rams is really impressive. They are the least penalized team in the league but no-penalty game is a rare thing.
It's too funny all these reporters and goofies in here. It's simple we are on 70%backups. It's amazing how great this team is playing and shows the depth of the team. Of course they will lose to super bowl talent teams stop over reacting
Where's my Mac Jones converts?
Kyle is getting tired of the excuses…
"As bad as it was at times, I still believe if we convert that 4th-and-1 in the first half, and we don't turn it over on the other drive, it's a two-score game, and I believe we're right in that," Shanahan explained. "I believe it could have came down the end if we played a little bit better on offense in the first half."
That's a Mac thingy🎉😂…
NBC and cbs continue to not know wtf they are talking about.
Rams gonna win the Super Bowl in the north house 🎉🎉
I wish they would bring back Dante Whitner to Postgame. He holds nothing back to chew out the team
A clinic by the Rams 🎉
Rams fan here i think Mac is way better then Purdy. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they're offense will regress when Purdy returns. Which is fine by me … 😏
Not expecting much from the 49ers this season.
not sure why he's talking about teams giving up picks for Jones, dude is a free agent after this year so unless the Niners sign him dude is fair game
