The Phoenix Suns Might Have to Make a BIG Move to Fix This Problem

Hello. [Music] Heat. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Get that stuff out of here. It’s Southwest Bias. Welcome in to Southwest Bias, presented to you by our friends at the Husband and Wife Law Team. If you’ve had a serious injury, call the husband and wife Law Team first at 602-7838841 or visit their website at husbandwifeaw team.com. And we are live from Studio K. Got the point right again. Brought to you by our friends at Circle K. Become a member of the inner circle today by downloading that Circle K app for free. I I’ve shared this before. I’m I’m a diabetic and I have to check my glucose on the regular and I have a chart that I look at and uh let’s be frank it goes like this a lot up and down all over the place. It’s kind of how the Phoenix Sun season is and I thought ah maybe that’s not the perfect way to look at it. Maybe maybe it’s more like the stock market. Well, that does look like that same uh kind of graph that I have. There is the fact of buying and selling and sometimes panicking when it comes to all of that. And last night’s game late Tuesday night in Golden State was a microcosm of the Sun season. Okay. Start in at the beginning of the first ups and downs the rest of the way. Kind of kind of looked like you might be able to climb that mountain in the fourth and then you cratered back down. We’ve talked about it. This is going to be the the way that things are going to work for the Phoenix Suns all year. Ups, downs, they’re going to have amazing moments uh against the Spurs. They’re going to have rough moments against the Warriors. We’re also noticing the pattern that they seem to be much better at home than they are on the road. Uh they’re three and one at home, 0 and3 on the road. So, the Morg has been a friendly place to them so far. And I’m okay with that. And we’ve talked about that. I’m okay with a little bit of an uneven season. And what it is all about is learning and getting a bit better each time. Figuring out what you need to do and how to do it after every slight step back or after every major step back or even when you take a couple steps forward. What can you learn from it? How can you implement it and how can you continue to go? They’ve got to solve the small issues to become more consistent. Now, they’ve figured out a big issue. They have their starting center right now. Mark Williams has answered all the questions that were there last season when it came to the five spot. Over the last five games, he’s averaging 15.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.6 six steals, one block, 61% field goal percentage, and he’s playing 27 minutes. Massive impact, well monitoring his minutes. This is exactly what you hoped for from Mark Williams. This is exactly why you traded for Mark Williams because you have a solidified number one center right now on your roster that matches and meshs with exactly what you are trying to do, what you’re trying to accomplish, and who you’re trying to be. But there is a big problem. Not in the size of the actual problem, but as in with their bigs because after Mark Williams, there’s some question marks. Nick Richards is hit or miss. We saw it last year when he was the Suns starting center. And as a backup, it’s all right. You can handle that a little bit more. good stretches of really smart basketball, ups and downs at other times, it’s okay. But when that’s the case, you also need a third big man that can come in and play a role. And I appreciate Oso Igodore, another Chandler kid, went to Marquette. I did that as well. I I I appreciate I I appreciate him. Very smart individual. I think he will have a role in the NBA. I just wonder if it’s right now for the second year big because the regression we’ve seen from him this year has been significant. And granted, he was thrust into the starting role in a position that he probably was not ready for. And that’s not his fault. That was due to injuries. That was due to a multitude of other things. But the regression is real. And our friend Darth Voida of Bright Side of the Sun, friend of the program, had this tweet earlier today that really put it into perspective. Uh his field goal percentage is down to 42% from 60.4%. His turnovers are up 1.6 from 6. His assist to turnover ratio is 77. It went from 77 last year to 1.82. Playmaking uh is his back his bag. And as Vida says, that’s trouble. He’s a negative 31 net rating, second worst on the team, and an 8.9% rebound percentage, 72nd among players who have played as much as he has through five games. It’s not good. In fact, it’s a liability right now when it comes to the Sun center position. Now, I don’t think the answer is giving Nick Richards all those minutes. I don’t know how much you can actually stretch out Mark Williams to play more minutes. Which brings us to probably the biggest question I have when it comes to the Suns big men. Come on, Maldatch. Number 10 pick in the draft. I’ve talked about it. He’s raw. He needs time. He needs to develop. But at what point do the Suns have to turn to Kaman Malawatch to play that third center spot? He has some of the attributes that you like about Oso. He has some of the attributes that you like about Mark Williams and Nick Richards in terms of his rim protection and his ability there. He supposedly has the ability to stretch the floor as well and hit a three, which is something that you have not seen from any of the Sun’s other centers. it’s not really in their bag. I think it’s too early to turn to Kaman Malawatch, but you can see where he could become an intricral part of trying to slow down the volatility that is this Sun’s ride this season to make those lows a little less low and maybe help elevate those highs to a little bit more of a level. He has that ability. He has that raw talent. The question is how soon can he be ready? I hope at some point around Christmas that Kaman Malawatch could be a guy that you turn to as that third center and by the end of the year maybe he’s even seriously eaten into Nicks Richards minutes and then also finds a way to be that change of pace big as a third big. If that happens it actually helps you because you might be able to find somebody that’ll trade for Nick Richards and get some assets for it for him as well. or god forbid uh Mark Williams has a has an injury. Knock on wood, touch metal, whatever your thing is. Uh because if he does, you’re going to really need Come on Malawatch. I hope that timetable is starting to come to fruition. I hope that we are getting close to seeing come on Malawatch be ready to get five 10 minutes in a game and have an impact. I don’t need him to be a world beater. I don’t need him to be first team uh all rookie. and he would be a contributor at some point this season because these OSO minutes have become rougher and rougher and and maybe it is just a dip in his performance, but it’s starting to feel like it may actually be more of where he’s at in his second year than more of where he may be later in his career. The Sun’s backup center position right now is volatile. It has its ups. It has its downs. And so is the sun season. But maybe if you solve the backup center position, you can solidify the other side of the coin as well. But maybe that’s just my Southwest bias. We welcome in the mustache behind the Mac, the hardest working man in podcasting in Arizona, Shane Defender. No, cuz there has to be like a It’s me. I know. No. Oh, come on. You know, this is all you do. You do 30 minutes of show a day and then that’s it. Yeah. 30 minutes of show, another hour. There’s got to be somebody that There’s got to be like a bluecollar podcast in Arizona. Like a construction podcast in Arizona. Palaces on their hands. Like, come on. Guys just talking about digging ditches and how to frame a house. No, no, no, no. Like, it’s a it’s like a it’s a total audio encapsulation of what it’s like to work construction. So there’s just jackhammering and Oh, so it’s it’s there’s no talk. It’s just No, there is talk, but it’s like it’s mostly like this. Hey, did you get that 4×4? Hey, hey, uh, you know, nail that thing in before somebody gets hurt. It’s like that. All right, I got you. Maybe those are the hardest working guys. Did we come up with a new idea, though? I think we did. There’s got to be a good name for it, too. Well, it just be ASMR Construction. Yeah, I think I think we’ve just hit the jackpot. To hell with this sports talk. Sadly, that definitely already exists. Tomorrow on Southwest buys construction ASMR for a whole 30 minutes. Shane’s just going to do it all himself though. He’s not actually going to download any sounds and I’ll just sit here staring at the camera. When you look at the Sun’s big man rotation, Shane, are we getting six hours of relaxing construction sounds and video? We’ve got it. All right. Done. Uh when you look at the Sun’s center rotation, are you getting to a point where you’re wondering is it time for OSO’s minutes to kind of dial back and maybe look at when you can get Kaman Malawatch in there? Well, I think whenever I have an issue, the first thing I do is ask myself why and what the why is. So, what is the why for OSO playing? Is the why simply just he’s a center and we need to put a center in there or is it because he brings something specific? Oso Gdaro brings athleticism. He brings playmaking and not really a whole lot of offense. So, so I don’t want the I don’t want Suns fans to expect scoring output from the center position when he’s in. And that’s okay because you’re going to have more options when Jaylen Green and Dylan Brooks come back and that’s going to shift everything down. And there shouldn’t be a time where Jaylen Green, Dylan Brooks, and Deon Booker are ever all out of the game at the same time. I just I worry he’s a tweener. I worry uh in terms of the defensive end, it’s not quite there. Yeah. Offensively, uh I I get that he’s a playmaker, but when he’s not even hitting that push shot on the regular, that becomes extremely problematic as well. We’ve seen his minutes go down, obviously, because Mark Williams has emerged as that starter. I just I start to look at I go, Kaman can do some of these things. And uh at what point do we get to you’re comfortable enough with Kaman Malawatch to to experiment with him? I I I think we’re probably getting closer to that. But uh you think that his minutes are going to drastically change by game 82? Come on. Yeah. Yeah. I would hope he’s in the 10 to 15 minute range by then, which is drastic compared to one for sure. So I I think he would be I think he’d certainly be the the third string guy getting a lot of those oso minutes. You know what I’m concerned about? What is that? The lack of likes on the stream, guys. Come on. Yeah. Come on. Mike D, Daniel Zonian. Zian. Zonian. Thank you. Sports talk. All the bias in the chat. Hit that like. Damn it. You can do better than that. I hate pandering like that. Our like goal today is 175,000. No, I was just going to say 100. Fine. 175,000. Pound that like button like it was a Lakers fan that challenged you to a fight. Hey, hey, hey. No violence condoning here. Hit that like button like it’s a Dodgers fan who just jumped in the pool at Chase Field. So, I know this is I know these are completely different things, but when Jaylen Green and Dylan Brooks come back, do you think the center problem gets fixed a little bit? No. You don’t think it gets fixed at all? You don’t think they’re relying on the centers a little too much right now? I mean, maybe in terms of looks, but defensively it’s not going to change a lot of that. Dylan Brooks isn’t going to change a whole lot out of your defensive center position. You know, maybe maybe playing Nick Richards a little bit more could, but he he’s so he’s he’s boomer bust in such a big way. I want to see more of I want to see more of Oso at the four because because in re Yeah, I know. No shooting. Well, it granted they have no size, so that might that I just want to see it. I just want to see what that what that looks like consistently, especially when you know they’re surrounded by better players. Um I just when when you think of a center rotation, you think of being too deep. Like that’s what you need. You only really need to be two deep. Right now, the Suns technically are four deep if you want to say that. Malawash two and a half. Yeah. No, I know. like the four players like in a perfect world at the end of the season should all be able to play the center minutes and you could should be able to trade one of them. The the problem is Nick Richard stinks. OSO’s regressed and your and your your 10th overall pick isn’t ready yet. So what can happen now is you can start trying new things once once once it once it starts not working because if you just keep doing this over and over again something something’s got to give. The the confidence level for me now is still high because we’ve seen how many games are we in? Eight now. seven, eight, eight games in and we’ve already seen the ability for uh to completely adjust game plans, completely adjust how he approaches the defensive and offensive end. I wouldn’t be surprised if we start to see a big difference. And again, once these two guys come back and just I mean, can we just can can Jaylen Green please play on tomorrow? It’s got it’s got to be Thursday. Please play tomorrow. It’s got to be Thursday. If it’s not, if it’s not, I will officially start being concerned that if if he does not play against the Clippers on Thursday, I will sound the alarm in postgame that I am concerned about what is going on. We should find out soon, right? Uh this afternoon, we’ll find out. Did you see the video that Dwayne Wank posted of him playing five on five? Yeah, Dwayne Wank. Yeah, um I I I didn’t really like how he looked. Um, it’s five on five in a practice. I’ll be I’ll be okay. Let’s I just need him on the court then then I can pass a judgment on what’s going on. But if he’s not out there on Thursday, there may be an issue. A guy that I don’t think there’s an issue with. I think you could name him the greatest teammate in NBA history. A guy that is doing the little things, the dirty work that you need, the kind of thing that the Suns are predicated on. Isaiah Livers last night in the Suns Warriors game did the uh did the Lord’s work on the bench. He was not even in the game and Dylan Brooks is shooting his mouth off in the fourth and Isaiah Livers reaches around him, puts his hand in front of his face and then when the ref’s turn to to try to uh tee up uh Dylan Brooks, Isaiah Livers goes, “No, no, no. He was talking to me.” You can actually read his lips in the video. “No, no, no. He was talking to me. That is that is the ultimate teammate that’s there and is is trying to say, you know what, you can have that voice. I just I’m not going to let you take the heat for it. Now, granted, Dylan got the the technical foul. It kind of slowed the Suns attempt at a comeback. I’m all right with it because that’s Dylan Brooks. You accept it. That’s the way he goes about it. But Isaiah Liver is mad that that not only did you have a vicious dunk, you had the the best potential assist of the night in what you tried to do there with Dylan Brooks. So, tip of my cap to you, my friend. That was spectacular. And to wrap up this first half of the program, congratulations to the man, the myth, the legend, the tank, friend of the program, uh, and, uh, you know, somebody that we know well here at PHNX. He is now the color commentator for the Valley Suns. I believe it’s 19 games this year on Arizona Family and Suns Plus alongside Braden who’s our who’s our guy. It’s going to be a fantastic broadcast. I’ve told Frank I’ve told other people uh even within the Suns organization that Frank is going to be a broadcast star and I only regret that I didn’t sign him to a contract here so I could do it alongside him. He’s going to be a blast to listen to and watch this season for the Valley Suns. I hope you all tune in. Valley Suns having their media day today and I’m hoping to get a special guest from the Valley Suns on very soon on the program. On the other side of the break, I gotta talk about the health bucket, the Arizona Cardinals, Jacobe Brassette, and we’ve loaded the hottake cannon. And we’re going to talk Cardinals in a second, but I want you to go out to Hila River Resorts and Casinos Wild Horse Pass on Sunday. The Cardinals watch along for the Cardinals Seahawks. You’re going to want to be out there uh with the boys enjoying the game, enjoying drinks, enjoying food. It’ll be a good time. But who are you going to watch play quarterback when that time comes? You’re going to be watching one Jacobe Alawishas Brand. I don’t think that’s his middle name. I don’t know what his number was like. So, I just went with Alawishious. Uh, you know, and that’s not me taking a a jab at Kyler Murray. Get that Jacobe Alawishious pet jab. I know. All right. Uh, but Kyler Murray is no longer the starting quarterback of your Arizona Cardinals. Yesterday, Jonathan Ganon addressed it and he had this to say. Really good football team. Um, our guys will be enthused about the challenge that lies ahead. Um, as it relates to the quarterback in Seattle, Jacobe will start. Um, and Kyler will keep working on his health bucket. Um, I do like what the offense is doing right now. We’ve operated well and, uh, we’ll go from there. As it relates to the game, health bucket, this may be my new favorite term. I’m all in on health bucket. I feel like in video games like Madden, they need to remove the slider, the health slider that tells you how a guy’s doing. And just give me a bucket. How much of that bucket is full? Is it 25%, we looking at 50%. How much of Kyler’s health bucket needs to be full before he’d even be considered to play? It doesn’t matter that this health bucket could be empty, could be full, could be pouring over the brim. Kyler Murray is done right now. I would not shock me if they put him on the IR as a okay, we’re not going to say we’re benching you, but we’re gonna let Jacobe Brassette handle the rest of this. You’ve seen the stats. It’s significantly in the favor of Jacobe Brassette. He has just as many passing touchdowns as Kyler in the three games he’s played compared to the five that Kyler played. He has as many rushing touchdowns as Kyler Murray in that time as well. He’s run the offense better. Jacobe Brassette is your starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals for better or for worse for the remainder of the season and maybe depending on what goes on going into next season. I am disappointed that the Cardinals did not fe fill their trade bucket yesterday and make a move because Jacobe Brassette really could very badly use a running back and offensive line help. But the Cardinals obviously did not want to give up assets to make that happen. As other teams went all in, the Cardinals are saying we’ll see what happens. So, we’ll find out about that. Uh, we did load the hottake cannon and it is time uh to fire some of those cannonballs. Shane, are you ready for some hot take cannon? Let’s do the damn thing, Espo. We’ve got just a bunch. And if you guys don’t know how this works, just fire off a bunch of random topics at Espo, ranging from LeBron versus Jordan to your pineapple on pizzas debates. Um, and he’s just going to have to tell me what he thinks of it. So, without further ado, let’s get the hot take cannon rolling. Uh, starting with my favorite thing, Ranch. Does it belong on everything? Yes. Ran Ranch is the utility player that every team needs. Ranch is that guy that picks you up. Uh even if if you got a bad piece of pizza, Ranch can fix it. You got hot wings that aren’t good enough, Ranch can fix it. You got a hole in your tire, Ranch can fix it. Ranch is is the Isaiah livers of condiments. Ranch is do it all, protect you, make things better. Ranch is 100% a a a condiment that should be on everything. Do you believe dreams mean something? I hope depends. Well, sorry. Let me let me say let me say if they do. My wife might murder me at some point. I mean that in a respectful way. But I in what sense do you mean do dreams mean anything? Like actual dreams would not not like my hopes and dreams because those don’t mean anything. I can tell you that. actual dreams. Actual dreams. Yes. I believe it is the mind’s uh you know burning off things in the subconscious and trying to sort out what in the actual hell is going on in your life. So if you’re having bizarre dreams right now, uh that’s all right because the world is bizarre right now and I’m pretty sure it’s just you trying to figure it out. Uh, and I can tell you this, I am somebody that still has that dream that uh, it’s graduation day down at the UOVA and I somehow have forgotten to take the last credit I need to graduate and I am in a panicked argument with my adviser on how I can actually make it happen. Uh, and I think that is uh, I don’t know what that means, but I’m sure it means something that or I didn’t actually graduate college and I’ve been lying to everybody. First CFP ranking out last night. Um, first of all, I just want to give a shout out to to the ESPN team because that’s the one thing that they haven’t changed. I love that show every Tuesday. It’s my favorite. Just wait. They will. Stephen A will be on there screaming about something. They’ll they’ll mess it up. Uh, the way they’re doing the CFP this year with the you still get an automatic bid if you win your conference um in the Power Four, but you don’t get the automatic buy. What do you think of the seating, the group of five teams still being in it and yada yada? I think that’s fair. I I think they learned from last year on some tweaks and and I actually appreciate because this is not something that college athletics has has shown an ability to do real well over the years is adjust on the fly. So, I appreciate that they did that they’re trying to make it better that they’re tinkering with it uh in the midst of it because I remember back in the uh BCS days and all that uh they I mean even before the BCS it took them years if not decades to actually make significant change. So, I applaud them on that. How about you? How do you feel about it? I mean ASU was robbed last night. No, I I I I think this is perfect um right now. like I I really enjoy the fact that they still get a group of five team in there. Um I think ASU getting the buy last year was a little silly. Uh but I obviously loved it. Um yeah, I think I think they they they made a slight change and they should not expand further. This is 12 teams is great because right now they projected the 12 and five matchup which would be uh what was it? It was uh Memphis against Alabama or against Georgia. I don’t want to see that. like that’s and that’s going to be the worst game for the whole time. But you saw last year like Penn State and Boise State, that was a closer game. So if if ASU finished six fitness is 16th in this uh this year, I’m saying they should be 16. I don’t think they’re going to make it that far. Um all right. Uh we have time for probably just fire him away. Whatever you got, let’s go. Who’s the most overrated athlete of all time? Of all time. All time. All time. Most overrated athlete. Chat blow on this. Tom Brady. Wow. I I think it’s I think that there are a lot of factors that go into his success. Uh but I I don’t think I don’t think he’s the greatest quarterback. I think he was the one blessed with the best system, uh the right defensive tools, the right head coach. I I I just I think there were better overall true quarterbacks than Tom Brady. You you want to say that he’s the greatest winner uh the as a quarterback 100%. I’m not sure that he’s the greatest quarterback of all time and he gets bestowed that honor on a regular basis and the most underrated Larry Fitzgerald. I love it. I love it. Um all right. You want to you want to end right there while I uh with the most controversial one. All right. That’s another hot take cannon. Can you put those cannonballs away now, Shane? Because you don’t get to play with those until the next time we do this segment. A big thank you to the mustache behind the Mac, uh, who takes care of everything around here. He is our ranch of PHNX. You can follow him at Shane D. You can follow the show, PHNX_ports. You can follow me at Espo. And remember, they’ve got a big problem, but it’s not too big to fix. Oh, hoy. [Music] [Applause] We all silly like the mayor.

  1. I would REALLY like to see Maluach and Fleming (maybe Brea?!) getting more than 2 or 3 late 4th quarter minutes every couple of games. Love Oso buuuuut he shouldn't be getting minutes at the 4 over Fleming. Experience matters

  2. I've been hating watching oso play this season. He's been bad. No offense and when he started at the beginning of the season. We were giving up almost 130 points per game. Play the rookies

  3. 3:16 nah they are nba professionals you shouldn’t say that they are OK or you are OK with that they’re gonna be up and down because they’re gonna play like that some nights. I would have to display. I think they’ve lost a couple close games they should’ve won so the record could be better. The way they played to come back against some of the teams where they almost won or they win those games at those skirts that’s how they should play consistent so I know they can do it. Also, they beat the Spurs, which Spurs were undefeated so I think as long as they do the fundamentals better passing the ball less turnover and don’t shoot too many degrees Get more inside buckets I agree some nights we’re gonna be off but they should be able to shoot 43% as long as they pass the ball and get shots. I think the sun can win 55 games. I also think they’re missing one piece the puzzle that will get them over some other team are gonna be better later.

  4. 6:30 I think we need to trade Dunn Gillespie Iga, Dora and Goodwin maybe another player for a center and a good tall player for forward and I think a couple of new rookies can do some damage but we need one more big splash player. I think Mark Williams is Amari star type he could play average 18 points and get 15 rebounds minimum. Is it me or does Booker look like he’s 64? 😂

  5. I've watched every game last season and this season, and Richards IS consistent and I am really not sure why he is not being used as 2nd choice Center after Williams. When he does make mistakes, he is harder on himself than anyone else. He also has been able to make his free-throw shots, and several mid-range buckets when he needed to. He is reliable, and I don't get the pit in my stomach when he enters the court that I got when Plumlee did and when Oso does. I am not interested in putting high schoolers in to see what could happen. The coaches know what could happen, they see it in practice. That's why Maluach is not being played. He is not a high schooler, but he has the experience of a high schooler.
