Craig Berube| Post Game vs. Carolina Hurricanes | November 09, 2025

John Tiver used the term immature to describe some of the mistakes that were made. What’s your take on this time? Could be immaturity, not a willingness to make the easy play. Turnover after turnover cost us the game tonight. You know, we didn’t check anybody tonight. We didn’t win any battles tonight. Two games in a row. Break that cycle with the mistakes and the turnovers. you guys do have good stretches and then it just rolls over again. Well, for me it’s just a mindset. It’s um you know, if you want to be a good defensive team, you got to you got to check, you got to have good sticks, you got to be hard, you got to win battles, and you got to have good structure. And right now, you know, there’s not um it’s a mindset for me. We’re not we don’t have any of that right now. How do you change that? Well, we like I said, I just keep working at it. like you know I mean I I you know my job as a coach is to get them back on track and that’s what I’m going to try to do. That’s what I’ve done and I’m going to keep banging away at it and you know it’s all you know it’s what we can do. You you look at video you talk you know we got to have discussions with players with the team um and you know get back we’re scoring enough goals every game to win games where we’re letting in too many goals. So, um, pretty much the season is we don’t, um, value the def the defensive side of the puck enough and there’s a number of things that go into that, but I’m not going to get into all that. We just don’t right now. We don’t value that. Tough game to assess a goalie, but what what do you see from Hill to be tonight? He he made a lot of saves. I mean, we gave him what, three breakaways in the second period, maybe four. I don’t know. I lost count. You know, it has nothing to do with a goalie. On the offensive side, Neilander basically has two games in a row on his stick last night against Boston with the post and uh crossbar today on the power play. Misses wide open. Do you say anything to or like how does he get over uh just the streak of bad luck like this? [Music] Well, I don’t know if I don’t think he has bad luck. I mean, he got two goals tonight. He’s been scoring pretty much regularly this year. Um, those things are they happen. That’s that’s just bad breaks at times and things like that, but that doesn’t necessarily cause hockey games. Yes. I mean, he could have tied the game up the other night and, you know, he missed this one tonight, but it’s all the other stuff that happens before that that that’s why we’re losing. What’s the other disappointment of this happening at home when you’ve had a pretty good Well, yeah, it’s disappointing. I’d say the last five games going into to Boston game, we were really trending in the right direction without the puck, doing a good job. You know, now our power play starts to click and we’re scoring like we are scoring. We’re scoring goals, but now we just went right off the rails the last two games defensively and it’s caused by, you know, puck play for sure. um costly turnovers and and just the you know the urgency that’s needed to um defend

  1. The time for holding players no matter of their tenure status salary accoutable .
    Enough .
If the farm team doesn't have anyone other than Cowan that can play as good as on the big club then give them a shot !!
Myers Beniot Carlo McCabe Rielly are terrible .
    Forwards
    Keep the 4th line together
As for the 3rd line bring up Logan Shaw
Second line Nick Robertson sorry but i think its time to move on ..
As for the 14 million dollar man and the other big salary guy your not escapinf this time

  2. Here's what I'd ask:
Captain Nostrils lost the faceoff by the Blueline and immediately headed up ice while the Canes had possession….how far is his head up his ass and is he running out of air?

  3. Usually it takes 20 games in to know what you've really got as a team. They played 5 decent periods against Pitt & Utah, then reverted to the disconnected crap show we all saw vs Boston & Carolina. These guys are NHL pros, yet they are turning the puck over in all zones, but worst of all in the D-zone. I have lost count in those 2 games the number of times the puck is on the stick of a Leaf in the D-zone & they fail to get a clear, turning it over followed by a clown show of inept coverage in their own zone.

Whatever systems have been implemented by the coaching staff, the players seem unable or unwilling to execute them. It is astounding. There is tons of blame to go around, but the one question I have, is why the hell Domi is still a regular in the lineup? I'm not a 'be all believer' in +/-, but Domi is -10 through 16 games. He is a legit liability in the D-zone & next-to-useless everywhere else. His dog crap play has led to too many critical goals against. I do not understand how you can play in the NHL for 9 seasons & still have not clue what to do in your own zone.

  4. The Problem is the D-Zone play. The D are turning pucks over and not clearing the front of the net. Guys with big contracts on D have to sit in the press box for a few games.

  5. it's the same D as last year, they were good defensively last year, they suck defensively this year. They did change their defensive coach though…time for a new one this guy isn't it.

  6. You score four goals you should win. The defence is nearing non-existent bar Hildebrand who actually played well.
Reilly should go (no idea how to trade him tho).
Do I is a good player but not a Centre.
    Is Tavares actually getting faster???
There is no heart to this team.
34 is starting to play again but he’s not a captain’s sphincter.

  7. The only meeting they should have is with Berube, Tree and Pelley to make even more significant changes. They need to have serious conversations about moving out core players who don't have the heart and passion. If you can acquire draft picks/prospects to change the identity so be it. Enough is enough

  8. leafs management gave away all young top talent they had for last 10 yrs, brought in a bunch of seasoned veterans 😂😂😂😂😂 hows that working??? montreal's players mostly all young????

  9. The leafs just don,t have the talent domi does nothing and keeps getting paid Roberts been messing with him for years wasting his time Mathews Nylander Tavares been around for ten years and they had so many other gifted players to complement them but management always trades them away This story is getting old and me as well

  10. They do not want to play your style Craig. Such a telling interview… "I'm gonna keep bangin away at it." – they are refusing to play your style… Game over.

  11. As a leafs fan there no defensive structure in this team. We need to play better for Bobby mcman to be the only player playing d does not say a whole lot cheif you got to start benching players who are not gonna play a full 60 minutes

  12. Matthews is a huge problem. It's obvious he does not want to play Berube's system. He as a captain should be motivating and getting the players involved and buying into the system. He is NO captain. He motivates nobody. He is dead inside and it shows. BUT BUT CAYDEN PRIEMAU IS THE PROBLEM !!!! Cayden is gone. Who is the scapegoat now???? What a joke this team and organization is.
