I’m Ryan Tracy, the founder of Rogue Analytics and Performance Consulting, as well as NFL33.com and rgroot.com, where we run down not only Kansas City’s use, but the rest of the league, the rest of what goes into the draft process and everything NFL. We’ve been covering this team for 15 years along with my partner Chris Clark, who you can find at KC Chief’s Corner. We’ve been doing this show together for nine seasons at this point. A lot going over there and we’ve covered it all for you every day. Thanks for being with us. back from the bye-week. Get a little bit excited. We are going to run it down for you cuz things have taken a little bit different turn since the Chiefs were last on the field. We are going to break it down for you the AFC playoff picture and they could hinge on what happens in this next ball game. That is first up today. Then we’re going to come back and take a look at where this team is personnel wise. Trey Den came and passed. There were some things happened that we heard about after the fact, but the bottom line is they have the players they’re going to have and they have to get it done. What does that look like? And then what is the bottom line? We’ll finish up today on the real AFC West. It’s all up for grabs by my interpretation and I think we’re going to have to dig into whether that’s real or not. But the AFC picture is really interesting, Chris. And watching games yesterday, watching what I term as uh missed opportunities from a Chief’s perspective for the Colts to possibly lose, for the Broncos to possibly lose. Yet none of that paid off. The Chiefs are sitting in eighth place. And they are eighth place because they lost to those Jacksonville Jaguars who are sitting in seventh only due to the head-to-head record. The Chiefs are two games out of first place. And and I do think this whole thing is their chance right now from here forward to take control of not only this division, but this conference. I think they can do it. What how do you feel about them right now? Well, I will say there was a couple of things that could happened. Uh the Broncos could have lost but and they played a bad game against the Raiders. So, that’s going to be interesting. Uh, and I know we’re talking about the AFC West, but the Bills played a horrible game against the the Dolphins. I mean, you look at the AFC in general, and this is going to be a mess going forward. Uh, the Jacksonville Jaguars lost, that’s great for Kansas City because it’s now a tied record. So, now it’s just head-to-head. Um, I feel better about Kansas City winning more games than Jacksonville the second half of the season basically. So, I’m not as worried about that one. Uh so glad they lost, but then you look at the Colts, you know, they could have lost a game. Uh they didn’t. The Chargers found a way to beat the Steelers who looked halfless on offense. Um that’s a nice way, wouldn’t it? I just I don’t really know what to make of the AFC. Like you have the the Patriots who are the cream of the crop in the AFC East and yet they, you know, struggled a little bit against the Buccaneers and the Buccaneers are a good team. So, I don’t want to uh, you know, give him that much, but it’s one of those things. It’s you look at this and it’s like, okay, Kansas City is two games back in the AFC West. They still play the Broncos twice. They still play the Chargers once. Um, I don’t think that either of those teams have looked that like they’re unbeatable. So, it’s just a question of can you go out there and can you play your game and can you be the team that you’re basically set up to be right now? Like their offense, and that’s the thing that doesn’t make sense to me when I look back at their loss to the Bills. Mhm. They go into that game and their offense is humming and then all of a sudden they go up against a Buffalo Bills team who seemingly beats them every single time in the in the regular season, but can’t do anything against them in the playoffs. And I don’t understand what happened to their offense in that game. Granted, Mahomes was pressured a lot, but I don’t think he played well in that game. And I don’t and I’m not sure why it is that he doesn’t seem to play well against that Buffalo Bills defense, which is horrible. Uh, and the Bills took a hit because they lost Ken Kade yesterday and he’s probably their best receiving threat, if not one of their only receiving threats. Um, interesting to me because you look at X and you have people, you know, six months ago people were saying, well, you know, the Keon Coleman’s better than Xavier Worthy from the Bills perspective. Now you have the Bills fans that are sitting there saying that maybe they should cut Keon Coleman completely. I’m just sitting here like I what do you do at that point? The Chiefs are in a better position than a lot of these teams. So to me, I feel okay about it. Uh, do I wish that they had lo beat the Jacksonville Jaguars? Yeah, obviously. Um, in a better game against the Bills, they probably win that, too, because the reality is they probably played one of their worst games against the Bills. Yeah. And and that Bills team clearly put it all out there. They rose to the occasion because they walked in against the Miami Dolphins who have been hless is a very good word and just couldn’t muster anything. Concaid is a loss. I I completely agree with that. But it’s not the only thing. They were able to bottle up Cook on a defense that shouldn’t be able to stop anybody on paper. It’s it’s very I don’t know if it’s permanent or not. I haven’t seen an update yet, but I will say this, the entire AFC is very matchup dependent. The the Bills beat the Chiefs. The Dolphins beating the Bills is just unfathomable to me. The fact that the Broncos were only able to put up 10 points against the Raiders defense is insane. Raiders. Yeah. Yeah. It’s everyone has matchups that grind on you a little bit. Um, particularly in this conference. Now, the only one that actually I felt better about is the Patriots doing what they do because when you look at at what the Falcons were able to do to the Colts, I do think the Chiefs have the ability to limit rushers a little bit more. Um, now John Taylor’s a whole different thing, but I do think that they they are one of the teams that can rise to that occasion as well. have a match up there that they can can try to uh control the the run game, but but let’s be fair about it. The Falcons aren’t like the cream of the crop of the NFC either. So, you’re sitting here looking at a situation where the Colts almost lose to the Falcons who it’s not like they’re, you know, going to be the number one seed in the playoffs or maybe even in the playoffs right now. I I not sure when it comes to standings in the in the NFC. I’m just looking at the AFC right now. Uh yeah, the Falcons are what, three and six. So they’re not even in the playoffs in the Oh yeah, they’re they’re much farther out of the playoffs than the Chiefs are at this point. Chiefs. So you’re looking at that from the Colts perspective who they go out and make a huge move and get S Gardner and you think, okay, their defense is going to take an even bigger step forward and they still had what 20ome points put on on on them by the Falcons who aren’t a great offense. Yeah, I mean Drake London is is having a surging year, so give him a little bit of credit there. But from what I saw, it wasn’t it wasn’t that S was able to really shut him down either. At one point, they did put up a graphic of one-on-one matchups during that ball game was interesting. But it all comes back to this thing that the the teams at the top here include the New England Patriots, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs have control over in terms of controlling their destiny. Absolutely. And the one thing, one last thing I will say is when Sgardner’s contract got done, everybody thought that it would lead to Trent McDuffy contract extension. And maybe the reason that it didn’t is because it gave the Jets the ability to trade Sgardner because of the way they structured the contract because they’re not going to have a bunch of dead cap space and maybe that’s why McDuffy didn’t sign an extension based on Sauce’s numbers. So take that into consideration. just want to wrap this back up into a Chief’s part uh before we move on. Yeah, it definitely is. And making up that team is something that is mostly set at this point for the the run for the rest of the regular season. There a couple of interesting wrinkles that came up. One was a trade that didn’t happen. That’s next. Today’s show is brought to you by our friends over there at Pelaton. We’ve seen the Kansas City Chiefs make acquisitions, sometimes very late, sometimes even after the trade deadline should someone that they’re interested in get released. One thing that we found out in the in the wake of the trade deadline was that there was another pass rush trade possibility that came down. And I only bring that up because it shows you the fact that they were digging fairly deep in trying to address the pass rush situation particularly at Edge. And I don’t know how you felt about it, but what’s your initial reactions to the player, etc. And if you want to outline what what it was. Surprise. That’s my initial reaction. Uh, Boy Maf, I I I thought Kansas City could have been interested in when the draft happened. Uh, but he doesn’t fit the the prototypical type of what they use as their edge rushers. And I I want to be clear when I’m saying this, he is not FAU. He’s better than FAU. Not trying to say that. But he is more like FAU than a George Carlos type of of edge rusher. He’s more of a speed guy. Does he have power? Yes. Can he set the edge? Yes, to an extent. But he’s not going to be a George Caroftus DE, which is basically what Kansas City has tried to use uh time in and time out when it comes to the defensive end position. So, to me, it was a little bit of a a surprise. And it kind of reminds me of them going out and getting a Josh UJ last year and not being able to use them in the defense. So in some ways it’s exciting knowing that they were trying, but at the same time it’s like why go that direction? He doesn’t really you you had somebody similar last year although didn’t have the power that Ma Maf has. So there’s a little bit of a difference there but uh kind of surprised is is I guess really where I would go with that overall. Yeah, and I get that. I I remember uh me and Croc, Dan, a bunch of my guys sitting down at the defensive line drills at the Senior Bowl in Mobile uh the year he came out and we kept kind of going back and forth about size versus power versus get off and he he was destroying the drills and it was how can I see him fitting into the Chief’s scheme? And and the real question was, is he heavy enough and is he willing to anchor enough to set that edge to to take on blocks? And at the time, I felt like it needed development. And I felt like he’s got good speed to power transition. I don’t I think his his repertoire uh especially inside counters needed work if he was going to play in the Spags defense, but I thought that that was all developable. I think the key thing that you see here is that he hasn’t developed in Seattle enough to really be a fit. And I think that this could have been something where it’s square peg round hole that based on a pre-draft evaluation might have made sense. But now three years removed without that development time. I’m not sure if you wouldn’t have been in a similar situation to UJ being a player that on paper fits and gives you some some measurables that you like that could maybe help uh the explosivity of this defensive edge, but I don’t know that it it gets on the field for Spags and Joe Cullen any more than Uch did. That would have been I think the the biggest risk. Yeah. And I think the bigger thing that I question is defense seems to not be as easy to plug and play for this team. uh whether that’s scheme or fit or if it’s just uh you know filling your responsibility, understanding the scheme, understanding what you’re supposed to do and being trusted to do exactly what you’re supposed to do every single down because that really does matter when you start talking about defensive schemes and defensive fits. So, I wonder if that plays into, you know, plug-and-play players where it’s a little bit easier on the offense because you’re not I mean, if especially if you’re a skilled player, if you’re a skilled player, it’s okay, you’re running a route, you can get into, you know, terminology may be a little bit different, but you can get into the different things. When you’re talking offensive line, it comes down to more of like a chemistry thing like you would have probably on the defensive line. But, I just don’t know. I I didn’t I was really surprised they didn’t make a move. Let me be clear on that first off. I I thought that they would get a move done of some sort. I didn’t know what it was going to be, but I thought they would get a move done. Uh and I do want to say this too. Everybody that is complaining that they didn’t go and trade a third round pick for uh Bree Hall, no other NFL team did either, right? Like I So what does that look like? Yeah, there’s there’s there’s an argument to be made that third round picks in this team have been very valuable. I mean, look at Leo Chanal. He was a third round pick. I mean, you have several that have been good. Obviously, you’re going to have some that you’ve missed on, too. Uh, but it to me I I understood why they stood tall and not wanting to give up a third round pick because you are only able to build this team through the draft because you’re going to be hampered by various contracts for the next couple of seasons. I mean, that’s part of the reality is you have to continue to be able to draft well. And when you’re only getting the player for a year, a third round pick is a lot to give up for somebody that’s going to be here for what, 10 games plus the playoffs. And then and then you’re at a decision point all over again. So you’re putting more on the front offic’s plate at that point. They’ve shown that they’re not going to pay a running back. So right guy and I honestly I don’t think that really moves the needle for me even if you were thinking you were going to pay him getting him here for that eightame stretch. Like that doesn’t change anything for me. Yeah that’s that’s fair. So what you’re left with is that the team as it is now is basically what you’re going to have through the the postseason rush. There is a possibility somebody gets cut somewhere much like we saw Mike Panell. Somebody gets cut that they have interest in, they’ll bring them right in. It happened with Sizzle a few years ago. Obviously Mike Panell is is a different situation because he’s so familiar here. But there is an off chance that that changes for the most part. It’s practice squad acquisitions. If you maybe at the running back spot, I don’t think you’re taking an edge from practice squad and expect them to do anything. Yeah. But there’s also a defensive tackle sitting out there that could be still getting healthy. So we’ll see if they decide to go that direction. We’ll talk about Christian Wilkins tomorrow, folks. Don’t don’t worry about it. We are going to take a look at the picture for the AFC and what this West battle is right now. And it starts this week. That’s coming up next. So, go ahead to fanduel.com and sign up uh over at FanDuel, the official sports betting partner of the NBA. And there’s a lot that goes into an AFC race. It maybe the other divisions have it a little bit easier. This one always comes down to grudge matches. And tomorrow we’re going to talk about who these Broncos really are. But when you take a step back, the Chiefs right now are in third place in the division, but it’s only two games. And with so many AFC West games remaining right now, I have to feel like they’re in pretty good shape to be able to at least make the run that they’re capable of making. execution will be a whole other thing, but Denver’s in first at 8-2. The Chiefs are at uh 5-4 and they have that ability to get up. The problem is the Chiefs have three losses in the AFC. And so tiebreaking comes down to if you can’t go win this division outright, it gets very complex very quickly with the Bills in sixth and the Jags in seventh plus the Chargers. Both all three teams have W’s against this Chiefs team. So, for me, the real AAC West has to be won outright, which means they have to sweep the rest of these opponents that we know so well. I would agree with that. And I’m sitting here looking at the schedules for these teams. Um, you talk about the Chargers, Jaguars are next, then they get their bye-week, then they have Raiders, Eagles, Chiefs, Cowboys, Texans, Broncos. Uh, easily could see them losing three of those games. Uh, when you look at the Broncos, it’s a little bit easier for Denver. uh they have the Chiefs this week, then the Commanders uh after their by-week, the Raiders, Packers, Jaguars, Chiefs, and Chargers. So, you’re looking at schedules that are going to be a little bit tougher. Um I’m going to be curious to see how that plays out, but Kansas City’s schedule isn’t uh you know, anything to sneeze out either. I mean, they have some tougher games coming up. I mean, they have the Broncos twice, they have the Chargers, they still play the Raiders again, so you have four divisional games, uh kind of like what we talked about, but then you also have the Texans, you have the Cowboys. Um, so you’re going to be going through, you know, a couple more of these teams that are going to be a little bit tougher. So to me, it’s the Chiefs are in prime position. They if they get on a run and they’re able to win out, I think they win the division and they may win the division by two games. Uh, but that’s a big if. I mean, they haven’t play they haven’t shown that they can be consistent yet. Yeah, they did it for a three-game stretch, but you’re going to be going up against some tougher competition uh in the next couple of weeks to be doing that three-game stretch that we’re talking about when you talk about the Broncos and the Cowboys will be coming up after that as well. So, uh this is going to be tough, but the thing that I keep going back to, and I guess the bigger problem for me when I look at Kansas City and I look at how this is going to play out is you really have no room for error. If you want to win the AFC West, you can’t lose more than maybe one more game. You can’t lose another divisional game, period. I don’t think you can lose another divisional game. Um, but you can’t lose any I don’t know that you can really lose more than one game and have a chance to win the AFC West because I do think that some of these teams have the ability to go on runs themselves. So, we’ll see. But the bigger thing to me is when you look at what has happened in the NFL or in in this division, the Raiders having a chance to beat the Broncos. Uh that’s tough. How do you explain that? Like the Raiders looked horrible against Kansas City and they they almost came in and beat the Broncos. And the the problem is for the Chiefs, you’re going to get every single team’s best shot. So, you want to get ready for the playoffs? Here it goes. Because you’re going to get every team’s best shot. That’s exactly what the Bills thing was was it was the Bills Super Bowl. We say it every single year. It’s the Bills Super Bowl whenever they play the Chiefs. So, I mean, it’s going to be the same thing this year. And what that means this week is the for the first meeting is it’s going to be pass rush and it’s going to be what is going on with the Broncos offense because it does have some capabilities. We’re going to run down all the injuries and everything in detail tomorrow, but the wide strokes are you have to control their offense that has been up and down and you have to control their pass rush. If you were Betty man, does Josh Himmon start on Sunday? Yes, if I I might only be 51% on that right now as we speak on Monday, but yes, Andy did talk about it on Monday. He did say that uh we’ll see where they’re, you know, obviously we’ll see where they’re at. the players don’t return until tomorrow. So, uh, but Simmons is back in Kansas City. So, we’ll see whether or not that ends up being the case. But, if he plays, that changes everything for this Chief’s offense, in my opinion, because he is I I like what I saw from Jaylen Moore, especially early on. But, I think he’s shown that he can’t play left tackle for an extended period. He can step in and and spot start, but you’re going to have to help him. And the Chiefs really weren’t helping him, and that was part of the problem. Yeah. and now he may be forced into playing on the right hand side. So in terms of like the the two the two top of the list goals, that’s really what one’s going to come down to. We’ll get into the individual possibilities tomorrow. Uh as well as look at what’s going on on their roster. But as they come off the buy here, it really is about circling the wagons with the guys that you have here. And with Simmons back, I think it does change the complexion. even if he doesn’t start, having him there if you get into trouble and having him come off the bench is a possibility as well. And maybe that is something that um alleviates the negative of not having him out there as the starter uh in in case you had to the break glass aspect of it is something that they could actually face. They could. I I personally think if they think that he can play, I think he needs to start because I do think that there’s a possibility that uh Joan Taylor may I don’t know. We’ll see. He hasn’t had to be there because, you know, obviously uh it’s one of those things where by week you don’t get any reporting. Uh we hope I will say this, Taylor has played, I know he’s not a fan favorite, but he has played very well this season and it will hurt if they miss him for an extended period of time. So to me, I hope that he’s able to be out there and they get their entire offensive line out there and ready to go. Uh Kingsley’s played phenomenal at left guard uh compared to what I expected. So this offensive line looks like it could be really the the push going forward. Uh and that’s the big thing is if they can continue to be what they were early on or, you know, for the past couple of weeks, I think that they’re going to be in much better shape and I think they’ll, you know, gel as they go forward. Yeah, I have to agree. Uh my camera won’t, but I can’t. I think the other thing that we have to keep in mind is that this team is right now for the first time probably since training camp able to breathe a little bit. I don’t know how much they they got away. I saw Momes at some some events. Uh seemed mostly around town, so maybe not a big getaway. That’s probably good. The key thing that this 69 man roster should have been doing for the last 72 hours is sleeping. That’s the number one thing. Get off your legs. Use this week to its utmost. Don’t necessarily go fly around. We’ll find out what everybody did later. But I think in preparation for this this back half run, it really is about these are the guys you have. get them in tuned up and as good a shape as you can and make that run at the West because that’s the best path forward for you in January. Chiefs have Broncos, Colts, Cowboys, Texans, Chargers as their next five games. You want to know where this team is going to be? We’re going to get the answer in the next couple of weeks. Yep. It’s going to be pretty straightforward. We’re going to have it all for you as we run it down. Folks, thank you for giving us your listen today. And crazy Miami vs. Bills was crazy. Embarrassing for us all.
Hey Ryan I just wanted to say if we’re not adding a player on either side of the ball. It sucks. But I also think these coaches trust the guy’s in the locker room more? What say you
Thanks for the work you do 365 to track down all the news Chiefs Kingdom needs. Locked on Chiefs team is the best!
how come the eagles never run out of money?
Dolphins showed how you beat the Bills. You have a good RB and you run it down the Bill's throat and that in turn opens up the passing game. Which makes it frustrating that the Chiefs didn't get Hall when they had the chance. The Chiefs are one dimensional on offense and the rest of the league knows it. The Bills dared the Chiefs to run the ball and the Chiefs said no. The Broncos are going to do the same thing. If I'm playing the Chiefs I rush 4 and drop back 7 in coverage with one of the 7 keeping an eye on Mahomes in case he takes off. To answer Chris's question about no other team taking Hall with a 3rd round pick. Every other GM passed on Josh Simmons too. Should the Chiefs have passed on him because no other GM was interested? In this iteration of the NFL you have to both be able to run the ball as well as pass. If you can't do both you're going to have problems playing good teams.
Brett Veach is no Howie Rosesman
Broncos 27 – Chiefs 13.
Hopefully Carl Cheffers & crew is not ref'ing the game!
IMHO, "I" think the Broncos were looking past the Raiders and that is why that game was close. The game this weekend (Chiefs vs Broncos) will be a TOUGH game for both teams. They have circled this game on their calendar before this season started.
Let's go Chiefs ❤💛 it's time to shut the haters up again show them who runs this division
Chiefs need to put a can of whip ass on the Broncos.
I'm loving how the Dolphins beat down the Bills silenced them
