PREGAME: Phoenix Suns MUST Take Down Zion-less Pelicans To Continue HOT Streak, Get Above .500
keep talking about what we were just talking about or I think we should talk about a Suns Must Win. Suns must win. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Psychos and sickos unite. tonight for a stay hot edition of the PHX Suns pregame show of course presented by Hila River Resorts and Casinos. You do you at Hila River Resorts and Casinos. Visit playahhila.com for more details. It’s a home game. So it’s me, Espo, and the Freckle Mom will be on the Mac making all the magic happen. Of course, Steven is at the morg hopefully getting ready to put another team in a body bag as the lowly New Orleans Pelicans, fresh off of five straight losses, find themselves in downtown Phoenix. We’ll bring you an update on Jaylen Green’s injury. We’ll hear from Pelicans head coach Willie Green about how he’s seen Devin Booker evolve. And of course, we’ll talk about what the Suns need to do to get above 500 for the first time this season in Espo. If they do win tonight, that would be five wins out of their last six games in the first three-game win streak of the season. I’m not a math major, but I’m pretty sure what they need to do to get above 500 is win tonight. I mean, they definitely need to score more points. And you know what? Usually, we get to this a little bit later, but I think that’s a perfect segue. Let’s get into the Suns must win meter for tonight because you had a very high one. Steven had a very high one. I had almost as high as you could get. Seven for a Steven, nine for you, 9.9 for me. The absolute highest on the SMW meter, 8.3 on average. Why, Espo? Why against a two-7 team at home is this a nine on the Mus win? That’s exactly why you’re at home against a two-7 team who’s missing, you know, any and all of their star power tonight. So, yeah, you better go out there and take care of business. You’ve proven that you’re capable of doing it without Jaylen Green. Uh you’ve proven that you find ways to win over the last handful of games. It’s now time to put that in practice and just jack stomp somebody that you’re supposed to. Yeah. now because this is the quintessential trap game, right? You’re you’re back home. You’re against a team that’s hurting bad, that has not won uh in a while, and that’s where you have a letown. If you are truly a hardworking team, a gritty team, a team that plays night in out and does the little things, you don’t lose a game like this. You got to prove it. Well, and this is a big test of the mentality because I know they’ve been favored in a couple games this year, but this is the first time that realistically you look at who the Suns are playing and it’s like you assume that they’re going to win, right? Which again, sometimes when guys are missing the amount of players the Pelicans are missing, teams can get frisky. The Atlanta Hawks beat the Lakers without basically half of their starting lineup. Uh, let’s get a into the injury report presented by our friends over at the Husband and Wife Law Team. If you have a serious injury, call the husband and wife law team first at 6027838841 or visit their website at husband and wife.com. For the son side of things, Jaylen Green is out with a right hamstring injury. More details on that here in a second. Royce O’Neal is the latest to come down with an illness. He is available, continuing the streak of Grace and Mark Williams. He should play pretty well tonight. Eve Missy also has an illness. He is available as well. But out for the Pelicans, their three best players. Jordan P, Zion Williamson, and De Jante Murray. Espo, you’re going up against a Pelicans team that’s lost five in a row and that’s missing their three best players. This is one of those games where you’re going to have to be on the lookout for a Derek Queen or a Herb Jones or a Trey Murphy III that could possibly have one of those nights go off and and make this a game. Well, first of all, the Suns need to learn how to cough into their elbows in the locker room because everybody is getting uh sick here. Second, though, Trey Murphy the third is the guy to look at. He dropped 41 uh earlier this year. He’s a guy that can get things going and you have to be careful like that. That’s the kind of guy you sleep on. you’re going to wind up realizing, oh crap, he’s he’s got 20 quick points and and we’ve put ourselves in a potential situation. I think last year when the Suns played the Pelicans, he had like a six three-pointer game. Uh the the starting five for tonight with Jaylen Green out is Devin Booker still Grayson Allen still Dylan Brooks starts his second game in a row back from a core muscle strain. Royce O’Neal inserted back into the starting lineup. Mark Williams starting at the five. No surprise with that starting five espo. No, not not so none whatsoever is what I’m trying to say. Uh that is what is expected especially after you continued to start a similar lineup with Green back in. I’m not shocked by where they’re going. And I think with this you say that Trey Murphy is a guy to watch. I I agree. I think offensively he is the most capable of just going on a heater. I’m fascinated by what Derek Queen, the rookie, is doing over there in New Orleans. Uh when they played the Spurs recently and lost on the broadcast, I believe it’s Antonio Mcdice does the broadcast for them. Said that he got a text from Tim Duncan on the broadcast saying, “I like this Queen guy.” Derek Queen has been phenomenal as a rookie in every aspect of the game, but specifically some shot creation out of the post and his passing. Both of those have been really, really good. I wonder who matches up on who because if Dylan Brooks is going to be on Trey Murphy, that means Royce O’Neal probably will be on Derrick Queen. Now Royce O’Neal is a veteran defender and he has been good as well, he’s a lot smaller than Derrick Queen. Derrick Queen’s a lot faster even though he’s not the quickest of foot or if it’s Mark Williams then who is Royce guarding. Is he on Herb Jones? I think all that is really fascinating. This is a team Espo that realistically the Suns should beat. But even in the NBA, the worst teams beat the best teams even when they’re not fully healthy. This is a great test for how sharp are you going to stay, especially, you know, that you don’t have Jaylen Green this game. You’re prepared for it. How do you respond to that? And can you continue the effort that you showed against the Clippers? Well, I think this is a Jordan OP game because you got to see, can you keep your guys motivated? What adjustments do you make? Because you’re not prepping for a team that’s at full strength. So, you’re you’re looking at guys trying to figure out what will this offense look like? How will they each individually perform? And then there’s adjustments that you’re going to have to make defensively. This is very much a game that I think Jordan is going to wind up being the reason that you find a way to win because you keep the guys mentally in it. You adjust where you need to and hopefully you can slam the door shut on a short-handed team. Yeah. Unfortunately, no Jaylen Green out there on the court tonight. Uh, Coach did talk about him pregame. He’s just labeled on the injury report as a right hamstring injury. So, not soreness, not strain, not tear, but he did say that Jaylen Green will undergo quote multiple tests end quote to determine what’s going on with this hamstring injury. There should be an update in the next few days. How do you feel about this update on Jaylen Green? talked with a former son’s trainer today and uh I’m not overly concerned that there’s multiple tests because that’s normal. You got to get imaging. Sometimes imaging isn’t conclusive in what you’re looking at. Fun fact, there is no difference between a strain and a tear. They are both tears. So, it’s about the severity of the tear and there’s three classes to it, you know, and and the third is obviously a complete tear off the bone. That’s that’s the serious you’re on the shelf for a long time. The others you’re anywhere from one to to 8 weeks it can be. So I I’m not overly concerned unless we get some kind of alert that there is a serious tear or a complete tear of the hamstring. Otherwise, we’re looking at, you know, a month, maybe a little bit more as they continue to try to strengthen that area and work them out. With the way that things go in the NBA in reporting, I think if this was like a grade three like off the bone, like one of those like like serious like injuries that’s going to keep him out for the whole season, I think Shams would have reported it last night. There’s Fear in the Suns organization that Jaylen Green might be done for the season. That’s just kind of how the ecosystem of this reporting works. But I also think that if it was minor, it would kind of be the same thing. I I think it’s it’s genuinely probably somewhere in the middle where I wouldn’t be shocked if if I think two months on the safe side is where I’m personally putting my expectations at right now. Even though we’re in the dark, I I’d be shocked if it was any less anytime less than six weeks. Two two months is the extreme if it’s not a complete tear. And maybe you do it out of complete caution, but the the thing is I think this is going to be very similar like what we just saw because uh you know in talking to uh to the former trainer from the Suns, one of them, uh he he essentially said that reinjury is is high in in terms of of this that you have like I think it’s like 37% chance in the NBA of of reinjuring that after the first injury. So, this is not some rare thing. This happens a lot. I I’m not overly concerned. Even if it does push to eight weeks, okay, you’ve shown that you can win without him. When you get him back, that’ll be a nice boost, you know, in late December if that’s when it when it comes along. But they’ll they’ll do what they think is right. They’ll put him through the work, and as he responds, then they’ll make make a decision. But I I don’t think there’s any real definitive way to to decide this is 100% healed outside of putting them through the work. Uh and then looking at the imaging and making as good of a decision as you can with it. Yeah, I I agree. I want them to be as cautious as humanly possible without getting to the point where you’re resting him too much. And I don’t think that they weren’t to bring him back. I I think some people are some people were posting De’Aran Fox highlights because he just came back from a hamstring injury and were like, “This is why the Sun shouldn’t have rushed Jaylen Green back.” They didn’t rush Jaylen Green back. No. And if you look at what he did prior to that, he was fine and he was he was really good in those seven minutes. The thing is, a hamstring injury is all about the speed of the player and the athleticism and that if you’re faster and and you stop more aggressively that you’re going to cause that and that’s just the type of player that he is. And it just happened to be that that he reinjured it. This is not a, you know, oh, they they didn’t do it right. There is no way to really tell with a hamstring what right is necessarily which in its own right is concerning because these things do linger and pop back up to where it’s not like hey you broke your femur you’re going to be out for this amount of time we know what we’re doing and then you can realistically come back with a soft tissue injury. It it leaves this concern in the back of your mind. Something we talked about as we built up to his debut was, okay, is this serious to the point of it’s going to continue to pop up like we’ve seen with a Devin Booker and like we’ve seen with a lot of really great athletes before, but you know that you can’t push it and this franchise is going to be cautious with it. It’s it’s not a compounded thing though. It your percentage of reinjury doesn’t go up each time you you get reinjured. So that’s a standard. this is what it is anytime you get a hamstring injury. So, yeah. Uh you mentioned that they they found ways to win without him, which I think is a testament to a lot of parts of the Suns organization. Obviously, the players, the coach, and the front office for building this roster, five and five through 10 games, four- one in their last five. Really impressive. I went back and I looked at the total minutes played for everybody on the roster. So, just bear with me here, but here’s the order of who’s played the most for this team and the amount of minutes they’ve played. Number one, Devin Booker, of course, 369 minutes. Number two, nice, Grayson Allen, 345 minutes. Number three, Royce O’Neal, 315 minutes. This is where things get interesting. At four, Colin Gillespie, 249 minutes, your player off the bench. At number five, it’s Ryan Dunn at 244. At number six, Mark Williams at 230. Seven, Oso Giggodaro at 119. And if you realize I’ve gotten now to number eight in the first part of the KD trade has come up. Dylan Brooks 119 minutes tonight. Jaylen Green or not tonight in the season. Jaylen Green, Dylan Brooks and Kaman Malawatch have played a total of 12% of their potential minutes so far this season. And Dylan Brooks accounts for 8% of that. That means Jaylen Green’s played 2% of potential minutes. And Kamal Malawatch has played 2% of potential minutes. Essentially, the Suns are five and five while barely having anything from the KD return on the roster on the court playing. Yeah. And what does that tell you? That coaching actually makes a difference and that Mark Williams does too. I mean, but to be fair, he he’s played in in limited minutes because of of the injury like you showed there. So even with that, yes, he makes a difference when he’s out there on the court, but he isn’t out there as much as the other starters. So a lot of credit has to go to Jordan, that system, and the way he’s got them playing defense because they are playing above uh you know what people thought and and Colin Gillespie’s taken a step in part because of it as well. The only thing I didn’t like was the OSO minutes and I think those are going to go down. I think those are going to go down. They have to. I think tonight is also I mean you probably will see Oso tonight. Maybe he’s the first guy off the bench. I don’t know. But if he doesn’t have a good game against this team, you you can’t lie to yourself anymore. Look, I want to see Kamwatch. I’ve been saying it since the beginning of the season and I’ve been saying it understanding why we haven’t seen him. That being said, I I just think you need to throw him into the fire. And I’m I’m kind of like I understand that he’s a project and we’ve talked about him being a project, but I think we have now underrated how impactful he was in college. Sure, he he had a great infrastructure around him. He was at Duke. He was around the number one pick. His entire starting five got drafted, including himself. Kaman Malawatch was one of the singular most impactful players on both sides of the ball in college basketball last season playing a lot of minutes in a highle conference in March Madness in every moment. And did he have perfect games all the time? No. I’m kind of tired of pretending like this is a guy who literally doesn’t know how to play basketball. Like I think you could put him out there and he could walk in five and five. I don’t I don’t think that’s what’s like, “Oh, Kan’s not ready. Come on.” I don’t think he is. He’s 18. He’s played basketball for four years. He’s not ready and he’s 22. Well, I mean that’s fine, but play Nick Richards and if there’s an injury if we get into December, like middle of December, end of December, we haven’t seen Come on. I told you I’ll get on that bandwagon a little bit more for you. If if Mark Williams had been out the other night when he had the illness, I was all in on you got to try come on in that situation because you’re you’re basically in dire straits at that point. I’m not going to panic yet with it. You know, especially you were saying earlier, if you get a few more minutes at a mark, if they if they stretch that we were talking before, uh you know, if you start using Nick Richards a little bit more, if there’s different ways that you’re utilizing those OSO minutes that you were giving him and finding other guys to go in there, fine. If you’re still doubling and tripling down on, you know, seven, 10 or so minutes a game and it’s we’re you’re getting the same results. Yeah. Okay. At that point, try come on because it can’t be worse than that. Well, you would hope it couldn’t be worse than that. Well, and here’s the thing. Even if it’s worse, it’s worse for somebody you’re investing your franchise and your future into. And look, if if you want to get to the point in December where he can give you quality rotation minutes, he might need to go through november playing some non-quality rotation minutes because you can see that there’s a path for him more so than Oso. And I’m not trying to hate on Oso, but again, Kaman’s 18 years old. Kaman has all the talent in the world. He was a top 10 pick. Physically, he just has a way higher ceiling. If he goes out there and makes mistakes, I don’t think he’s the type of guy, from what we’ve heard about him, to turn around and be like, I suck. I’m terrible. I’ve lost all my confidence. I think it would be, hey, you’ve got some tape to learn off of. Go learn. And now, by the time we need you in December, in January, in February, you’ve been able to use some of this time to learn. I think he might be a victim of the Sun’s success though lately as well because now you’re rolling. uh you know, you’re you could go over 500 tonight and all all of a sudden you’re like, “Okay, do I really want to experiment with minutes just to let this kid learn on the job or do I want to keep a streak going?” Like there’s all there’s all that that comes into play, right? If they were sitting here and they had the Pelicans record at two and seven and we weren’t seeing Come on, Malawatch. Yeah. completely different because at that point you’re you’re really going, “Okay, we’re we’re playing for ping-pong balls without the ability to have ping-pong balls. So, you might as well play the kid.” I mean, look, and Brian says, “I want to see Fleming more than Mwatch right now. He’s older and stronger. I want to see Fleming, too.” The reason why I’m so insistent on Kaman is because the center play besides Mark Williams hasn’t been great. In fact, the biggest drop off for this team is when Mark Williams goes off the court and either Nick Richards or Oso comes on. I, you know, it’s something to monitor. And I also thought there was a good point in chat about saying I’ll I’d take seeing Kaman in the G-League at some point. At what point does not playing any legitimate basketball also harm your development? I get that he’s your top 10 pick, but if he’s literally not going to get into games, let him get some running. Like, let him play some basketball. If you’re playing five on five and in practice, they’re running uh then they’re they’re playing then. I’m not I’m not concerned about some some rust at this point, you know, and putting him in the G-League to try to knock that out. What you what you got to do is take care of business tonight in the first half and give him give him a wealth of opportunity in the second half to play because you’re up big. Like that’s that’s the ideal way to get him get him minutes is it’s a lowleverage situation, but you can put him in there. You let him learn on the job in that kind of a situation, gain that confidence, and then bring him in in more important minutes. Well, what are the keys to taking down a two and seven Pelicans team on the precipice of their sixth straight loss from Steven? Key number one is bring your physicality, especially on the glass. Key number two, play through paint touches in the nonBooker minutes. And key number three, stay attached to Trey Murphy the third. Espo, which of those keys is most important to you? Well, I think the rebounding because when you look at it, the Pelicans are 28th in rebound uh defensive rebounds per game. So, you’ve got an opportunity to dominate on the glass there, which is big. Uh but then on the opposite side of it, they’re seventh in offensive rebounds. So, they’ve got you’ve got to keep them off the glass on the on the offensive side and not allow second chances because the way a injured or bad team can get back and actually make a game out of something that shouldn’t be is by having those multiple chances. So, you got to protect the ball. You got to work uh the rebounding on the offensive glass and not allow or excuse me on the defensive glass and not allow the Pelicans to get offensive rebounds. I think a big key for me is perimeter defense tonight. I mean, Ryan Dunn still coming off the bench will be a big part of that. If New Orleans is to win this game, I think it’s because they get hot from deep. Whether it’s Trey Murphy, whether it’s Herb Jones, whether it’s Jose Alvarado, whether it’s Derek Queen, whoever it is for the Pelicans, Jordan Hawkins can can catch fire from deep. If if they get hot early and they’re up early, I we’ve seen this team fight back. I don’t think the Suns will ever actually be out of this game. But Kaman’s here. What’s up, Kaman? uh says, “Yo, by the way, every stream I’ve been to, we’ve won. That’s on you now.” Yeah, you better keep showing up. Uh I I just think as long as Pelgans don’t get hot from deep, Sun start off good at home, and they’ve been really good at home so far this year, only losing to the Grizzlies, this should be a game that that they take care of relatively easily. But what do our friends over at Bet 365 think about what this game looks like tonight? Let’s take a look at the line. Uh minus 8 and a half on the spread for the Suns. their biggest spread in favor of them so far this season. Minus 370 on the money line. A plus 290 on the money line for the Pelicans. Plus 8 and a half on the spread. Is that fair, Espo? Yeah. I mean, you should be able to to win by nine tonight. You Yes. For for I think the the first time all season you can definitively say you’re not at a talent deficit against the opponent that you’re going against. And that’s what that line shows tonight. By the way, hi Groundhog Mama. Glad to have you in here. Mr. Ruby, also good to see you. Russell, Deborah, Boom, Shock Lock, maybe a little less with you, but Boom. Boom is a welcomed like uh hater. Yeah, like a a foe, you know? Like it’s like I love the name. Boom disagrees with so much that it makes for good conversation in the chat and on the show. Every chat needs somebody like that. And every franchise needs a player like Devin Booker, who is off to his best start of the season. And we’ll get to some specific stats here in a second, but former Suns assistant coach and current Pelicans head coach Willie Green talked about Devin Booker’s playmaking growth with Steven pregame. At this point in his career, he’s seen it all. Um, you know, he’s seen double teams, triple teams, boxing ones, whatever it is you want to throw at him, he’s seen it. Um, and now, you know, he he has a better understanding of how to attack the defense. and he’s he’s getting better and better the more I watch him. He’s poised, you know, he’s getting off the ball quickly, understanding how important it is to trust trust his teammates and it’s coming right back to him. So, tonight he’ll be a good test for us. You can you can almost hear the pride in Willy’s voice, right? I think he takes uh takes some pride and some uh you know, some credit for where Devin Booker’s developed. But I what stood out to me I I was looking at this earlier. You look at the season that Devin Booker finished fourth in MV NBA MVP voting. He averaged 26.8 points, 4.8 assists, 38.3% from three, 46.6% uh field goal percentage. This year, averaging 29.3 points, 7.2 assists, is shooting 41% uh from deep and 50% from the field through 10 games. This is the best the best Devin Booker we’ve seen consistently and in particularly to start a season as well. He has been fantastic. He’s been efficient. He’s hitting from deep in a way that when he came into the league you thought he was going to be able to do but has never really lived up to that fully. Uh and then his his passing has been spectacular. still fourth in uh potential assists created at 15.7 a game as well. This is the real deal with Deon Booker. This is Devin Booker’s prime. There is no if ends or buts about it. Oh, but he he had a dip last year, right? Sure. And you know what? He did. And he you know he did not have a dip. He did have a dip last year. He was top 10 in points, top 10 in assists. Correct. I think I think the defense last year was to I think that’s a I think a dip for Deon Booker is we’ve seen this year specifically like when your team is is obviously still not poised to win but you’re almost dragging them along even on both sides of the court. Deon Booker’s been a positive on defenses statistically and by the eye test so far this year. Like I would say last year was if we’re counting the last like three to four years as Devin Booker’s like early prime, right? I’d say last year was the worst year of his early prime and I’d say so far this year he’s playing the best that he’s ever played, right? And I think part of that is system. I think part of that is is utilization and I think part of that is just he’s really really really really good at basketball and and he continues to get better and his his game continues to age well. I still think Book was a near top 10 player last year, but I think the way that he’s operating right now and how he’s playing, I think he’s the best shooting guard in the league and I think he’s a top 10 player and I would not be shocked if this team continues to win around the rate that they have been the last six or seven games. He would be he’ll be an MVP candidate this year. I I think ex expecting him to win at a huge clip is probably going to be tough. I I think he will be a bare minimum second team AllNNNBA player this year and may get some MVP votes, but I’m I’m impressed with what he’s doing. And boom, Shakalaka wing sucks. Uh, look, it’ll be on book tonight for sure. It’ll always be on book, always on his shoulders. But there are other guys that it’s going to be on, too. I think Colin Gillespie, all eyes kind of turn to him. He had a rough second half against the Clippers, but an electric first half. What does Ryan Dunn do off the bench? Can Dylan Brooks, you know, he only took six shots, you know, in the last game. Does that go up with no Jaylen Green? It’ll be interesting to see what everybody else does. Do you have like a Suns role player, not named Devin Booker, that you feel like it’s most important for them to step up tonight? Colin Gillespie. Yeah, Connor. Connor. Colin, whatever you want to call him, the blue Connor boy. He needs to step up and uh, you know, not step up, he needs to continue to play the way he has. he can be a difference maker and help make up for uh the deficit you have without Jaylen Green out there. And I think he’s gonna be uh gonna be big. Well, speaking of deficits, let’s get into our pregame picks presented by Bet 365. Uh both of us losers yet again. I’m I’m at a plus 8225. Espo30. Obviously, you’ve seen much worse deficits, you know, in your time here. Minus 30. Don’t care. Minus 30. Minus 30. I’m bothered. Yeah, I’m bothered. All right, guy. Just No, I’m fine. Don’t you worry. So, what are you putting your money on tonight? Here on a winner is what I’m doing. Colin Gillespie over 19.5 points, rebounds, assists. Royce O’Neal over two and a half threepointers. Dean Booker over two and a half threepointers. Deon Booker seven plus assists. Grayson Allen three plus assists at a plus 730 with a profit boost on top of it. I love that 30% profit boost over at Bet 365 on the same game parlay as I got one on mine as well. I’ve got Derek Queen over 20 and a half P. I think he’s been playing very well as a rookie so far this season. I’ve got Kong Gillespie also over 19 and a half P. So, we’ll both be rooting for that one. I’ve got Dylan Brooks over one and a half stocks at a plus 910. I believe that is with my profit boost. But that’s what we think will happen betting wise. What do we think happens as far as score predictions go? We all think the Suns move to a three-game win streak and 5-6 in their last six games. Stephen 118 to 109. I’m going 125 to 109. Biggest margin of victory out of the three of us. Espo 121 to 113. Yep. I think this is hopefully a game that you look back on and go, well, that was an easier one than than we’ve seen so far this year. I mean, look, that Clippers game, they were up big almost the whole game. He just it felt bad because of the Green injury. That was really your first chance of having just like a super fun win this year where it was just front to back. You were better than that team. Let’s hope tonight we get that.
