Ostlund Scores First Career Goal As Sabres Salvage Another Point – Postgame Thoughts

The boys go to a fifth overtime in a row. Unbelievable. Coming up. [Applause] [Music] Well, folks, I’m going to have to hear what you guys have to say cuz I missed a lot of this game. Not only was my feet kicking out, my phone did not stop in this building all night. It’s just one of those nights, guys. I didn’t even bring my phone in here with me. If it’s an emergency, it’s going to wait. I’m going to make my video and I’m sure I’ll get a call tonight. It’s that kind of night in this building cuz I’m on call. You know, even after 5:00, I’m on call. And it was nonstop. Just non-stop. Okay guys, you’re going to have to tell me what you seen here. I seen parts of the first. I did not see any of the second. And the third I seen I seen the goal. I I at least got to see Oseland’s goal, his first goal. I at least got to see that. And I wasn’t even sure that was going to count. And to be honest, I remember at the time I it looked to me like we’re not even going to get a goal in this game. That’s just how it felt. But I didn’t see enough of the game to make a judgment call by just seeing the numbers. So you guys will have to tell me cuz from what I can tell by these numbers, we got lucky to get a point. All right. All right. Let’s look at the numbers. Talk about them. Uh Utah doubles us in shots 3518. Faceoffs they were better too 60% to 40%. Both teams 0 for two on the power play. Sabres had 20 hits. Utah had 15. I remember we were very low in hits. I think we had 11 after two periods. So at least we must have come to life somewhat. I’m guessing in that department in the third block. Sabres had 21. Utah had nine. 11 giveaways for the Sabres. 15 for the Mammoth. Four takeaways a piece shots a goal per period. 97 Sabres in the first. I wish I would have seen more of that period. 155 Utah in the second. 123 Utah in the third. So 27 to8. I mean you guys tell me what happened here really. And the overtime I didn’t get to see either. Did the Sabres have a scoring chance with that one shot? I don’t even know. 3518. as your final shots right there. Scoring Schmaltz from Keller and Marino at 358 of the third makes it one to nothing. And Oselyn replies to that from Rosen. Nice to see the youngsters doing today at 750 to tie it up one to one. And we go to overtime. Keller from Sergeev and Vermela at um it is 47 second mark. That’s your game. Oh, another clip. Let’s take a look at it. There’s your standings, guys. Is that nuts or is that nuts? 13 to You got number one to 10. Two points separating them. Two points. And that team that’s in 10th, Florida plays tonight and they got that game in hand on Toronto. So, just take a look at that right now, guys. This is just how crazy it is right now and why it’s so important we’re picking up points in games. And that’s nine games out of 10. The Sabres have picked up points now. So, I’m not going to complain. From what I’ve seen here in these numbers, we got damn lucky to get a point in this game. And I’ll take that because we got very unlucky kind of in some of those other losses. So, this kind of evens it a little. Maybe we got a point we didn’t really deserve tonight, which I’m okay with that cuz the Leafs have gotten a bunch of those already. So guys, let me know what you’ve seen in this game. What’s your opinion on this? How bad were we outplayed? Is this as bad as 27 to 8? I mean, is this what went down? Cuz what little I saw here and there. I just couldn’t piece it together what I’m reading here, right? I was just very, very relieved when Osland scored. I was like, you know, I’m watching and he scores. I’m like, yes. And I wasn’t sure if they were going to count that at first, right? It looked like maybe a high stick from Rosen. I wasn’t sure. Wasn’t sure. You know, today’s NHL, we never know. And uh it was fine. So, that’s good. So, the boys pick up no matter what, guys. Another point. Okay. In this game, 5-1 and four our last 10 now. Very weird, eh? Very weird stretch of games since we’re 0 and three. But if I think guys, if I were to tell you we’re going to lose one regulation games of the next 10, would have you taken that when we started 0 and3 and looked awful? I think we all would have, right? So 54 and four. I guess we’ll take that right now and um and not complain. I’m not complaining right now. I I’m I’m very grateful what I see by the numbers here that we got a point out of this deal. this uh this I wish I could have seen a little more of this game though, you know, because of this Utah team. I’m very curious what they’re how good they are. Like how did Purka play in the game? I don’t know. Did we boo him? I don’t know. I’m going to have to read your comments to see that cuz if the I’m I’m guessing the fans might have let him hear it. Did we do any kind of tribute to him? I don’t think we should to be honest. I don’t know if we did. And if we did, we’re trying to stay classy. But I disagree with it. There should be no tribute for this guy, you know, really. Really. So, Sabres got another point. And if I’m unless I miss my guess, most of you are probably a little grateful today about that one because it’s a tough game off the schedule. And um because they’re tough right now, this team right now they’re tough to beat. A lot of teams are having a hard time beating this bunch this year. So, if the Sabres can uh, you know, get points in games where sometimes they don’t deserve it, that’s a good sign. The way I see it, guys, it really is. It’s a good sign. Means we’re starting to have a bit of luck here. You know, if we got lucky to get a point today. Okay, let’s take the luck. My goodness. How often do we get lucky as Sabres fans? So, I’m I’m happy. 5-1 and four last 10. I was looking at the last 10 in the East and the only team in the last 10 games to get more points than us is Montreal. Montreal’s got uh 17 the last 10 games and the Sabres no 17 Montre no Montreal’s got 15 I believe the last 10 games 71 and two or 72 and one I’ll check it right now anyway it’s it it’s nobody here is picking up points on us is what I’m saying which is kind of good I think there was a few other teams also that had 14 points in 10 games And um I’ll tell you right now, so Montreal, the last 10 have picked up 15 points, 72-1. Detroit 7-3 have picked up 14. Boston 5-5. New Jersey 7-3, they’ve picked up 14. Pittsburgh 62-2, they’ve picked up 14. And I think there’s another one. I could be wrong. The Islanders, right? 62 and2 their last 10 they’ve picked up 14. And also let’s not forget Tampa Bay. My goodness. 62 and2 also their last 10. They’ve picked up 14. The Sabres 51 and four. They’ve picked up 14. But I will say this, the last 10 games, okay? And I’m checking the rest of the league before I uh I give you this. The Sabres are the only team in the entire NHL the last 10 games to only lose one regulation game. This is bizarre, guys. This is a bizarre time for us. We’re frustrated. But if we do this every 10 games, we’re going to make the playoffs for sure. You know what I mean? It’s It’s weird, right? So, yeah. How many teams have lost two? LA 42 and four last 10. Vegas 62 and two. They don’t seem like they ever have a bad night. 72-1 for Anaheim. My goodness. Okay. Um, Quenville’s doing it over there so far. The Kraken 42 and four. Very quiet over there. Seattle’s doing it. Um, then Winnipeg and Utah 8 and2 their last 10. Oh, my bad. Colorado 51 and four like the Sabres. I didn’t see it. Sorry. So, there’s two teams. There’s us in Colorado. But if you look at everybody in the East, Montreal 72-1, Detroit 7-3, Boston 5-4, but they’ve won four in a five and five, but they’ve won four in a row now. Jersey 7-3, the Penguins 62-2, the Hurricanes 6-4, Toronto 63-1, Philly 64-0, Columbus 64-0, Tampa 62-2, Islanders 62 and2. My god, you know what I mean? It just we can’t cop a break. Ottawa 53 and two. The Sabres 51 and4. The Rangers the only team that that maybe is really disappointing the league, but they’re 500 44-2. Washington 54-1. And Florida a game under the only team four five-1 in the East the last 10 games to be a game under 500. Guys, it’s going to be a crazy year. Brace yourselves. Okay. So, I I I mean, I’m going to take this. I don’t know if I’m commenting on something that maybe I’m wrong and they maybe should have won this somehow, but from what I can tell by these numbers, no, no, no. I don’t think they should have won tonight, but I um I’m guessing Lion must have been a beast in Nets. Jim sent me a text saying Lion was great tonight. I’m not surprised. And um we’ll leave it there, guys. We’ll leave it there. Hopefully next game I’ll be able to see the whole thing and I won’t be getting interrupted in this zoo of a building. My god, I don’t even want to talk about my job today. I’m so frustrated tonight. I’m going to leave it there, guys. I’m going to get back to a movie called Dante’s Peak. I don’t know if you guys have seen it. I’ve been into it all night long. Back and forth, too. Like, I’ve had that running and the game at the same time when I was in and out of the apartment, you know. So, so I keep pausing the movie and I ke I kept checking the game as I was coming in. All right, guys. Done. We’ll leave it there. The boys don’t lose. They get a point. They lose in overtime, but they don’t lose in regulation once again and pick up valuable points that we know we’re going to need down the stretch. Have a good one. [Music]

Hey folks, the boys keep getting points as they got yet another one here tonight..as frustrating as it has been getting these points is very important during this ‘weird’ stretch..thanks for watching and see you all soon 😎

  1. 5 ot points can look like we underperformed but 5 reg. Losses would put us almost dead last again.

Do we need to improve, yes!
Do we need to find away to get those wins in reg or ot? Absolutely!

But hey, we still got time and the Atlantic is still wide open.
Its time to make a big push now!

    P.s.

    Lyon was fantastic tonight!

  2. the rookies played well (Rosen and Ostlund) Lyon was Stellar again.
despite the low shot count we had some real quality chances and we could of had 2-3 goals easy.
the PP looked awful and we were outplayed the majority of the game so im happy with a point.

  3. Dahlin is still fighting it. I understand his off-season was horrible & he was impacted. I'm glad we are picking up points. I believe Dahlin & Tage will find their game. Huge props for Samuelson & lyon & the kid line tonight. Past few seasons, these were all reg loses. Can't wait for Dahlin & Tage to chip in.

  4. Really good to see the comments here confirm what I was seeing. No complaints here. They’re playing good hockey. I’m not frustrated at all while watching this team this year. Something is truly different this time.

  5. I was surprised by Utah. They were fast, skilled and tough. Their Goaltender was very strong. They were the better team for sure. Power on the wall is a failure. Lyon was solid as he made some critical saves. Too many Sabres could not hit the net this game! QUINN on that Keller goal was awful… just watching as Keller walked right in…. That being said, we did ok with that lineup imho. I will take the 1 point and move along!

  6. It was like watching the fastest game ever the puck was hard to follow ,is the Utah Mammoth a Grenado team yeah the Mammoth are a blueprint of a Grenado team and there good they have a fun line glad Patatricia ,(Paterka no pts for him )

  7. 1st period was our best. Lots of grade A chances. The rest of the way, Utah took over and we started that maddening habit of overpassing the puck (especially on the PP). And then in OT, we once again, looked as if we've never played at 3 on 3. Both goalies made many highlight reel saves. Face-offs continue to be a glaring weakness. With all that said, we managed to get a big point. Go Sabre's!

  8. Given the Sabres players out of the lineup, I'm happy with a point in the game. Utah is one of the top teams in the league early on. Eastern Conference is crazy close. 5-1-4 in their last ten games since the 0-3 start. Looks a heck of a lot better than if it were to be 5-5. These OT losses are getting annoying, but points are points.

  9. With all the Levi talk the biggest talking point should be how Lyon is playing himself into the 1A goalie spot. If Lyon keeps it up the conversation has to be which of the 2 younger goalies Buffalo keeps beyond his season (Levi has to play in 29 games this season to lose his waiver claim exemption)- Ellis or Levi. Buffalo can wait closer to the trade deadline to move UPL if Lyon continues his great play in net. Having UPL around till then might benefit Buffalo if Lyon's play declines & UPL gets hot.

  10. Power looked lost. Thompson hit post twice.
Alex tuck can't hit the ocean from a boat. He missed a wide open net in o.t.
Can't make playoffs with 1 point per game.

  11. My biggest takeaway from this game is that Lyon is showing that he has earned the #1 goalie job and that Adams should be actively shopping UPL for the best return he can get.

He’s 10th in the league in SV% and has a 2.81 GAA. UPL only has 1 season out of the last 4 where his SV% was above .900 and a GAA under 3.00.

If weee going to have a 3 goalie rotation, Levi deserves to be in that mix to find out if his time in Rochester has prepared him for the NHL. This is the ONLY way to know by the Trade Deadline which of the 3 Goalies (Lyon, Levi or Ellis) need to be moved to improve the team.

  12. Power continues to play small. Must drive Ruff bonkers. Kesselring, in 4 games has more hits than Power had all last season. Power, along with a goalie, should be on the block imo.

  13. We didn't get ''lucky'' at all, lyon played outta his mind, pk is ELITE, vejmelka was a wall, we were missing OVER HALF of our forward starters against an actual good team. We EARNED that point with heart and grit.

  14. Lyon Played his A$$ Off. The Team Skated Really Well. Cant Score on Break aways to Save our life. Players who are our Goal Scoring Boys are not Getting it Done when Needed. On the Bright side,We have a lot of players Out,so it’s Encouraging to see the youth playing well though. Peterka was Boood

  15. It was a good team game (considering the roster for the game against Utah) backed by incredible goalie play, again it just seems our overtime play has been lacking and they collapse, how many times are we gonna let the star player/players just walk in all alone on our goalie(happened in toronto too w/ Tavares), if you go back and watch just the ot goals, it all starts with someone makes a bad defensive move and then it's either a huge odd man rush or a breakaway, we need to work on 3v3 ot in practices so things like this don't happen, too many overtime losses in a short amount of time where we make a huge mistake trying to be too aggressive and then it just goes the other way to leave our goalie in a bad spot to make a save, we can't settle for ties every game, yes it is better than losing, but getting 82 points in tie loses all season is not going to make our playoff drought end any sooner.

  16. completely outplayed in the 2nd and 3rd period Sabres generated some quality chances but they were running around all game Utah possessed the puck it felt like the whole game

  17. The core problem with the Sabres is they are missing a core scoring forward like JJ. Not specifically JJ but someone like him that is a proven 30+ goal scorer. Now you may have that with Kulich, Doan and Quinn. However none of these players have that proven level of scoring. We have a lot of depth scoring. However not really good primary scoring outside of Tage. And NO. Noris does not count because he is always injured. To prove my point we do not have a single player in the top 5 goal scorers.
Now part of that again is young players like I said, some of that is injury related however while I am not going to bash the JJ trade because it has worked out for both teams. The weakness of that trade is we didn't replace the goal scoring production. We need to find a scoring forward like a Owen Tippett who can consistently put the puck in the net.
With that said we could get closer to being in the Playoffs this year because we are getting points out of tighter scoring games. With that said even if we got into the playoffs we will be very limited because no team has won the cup that did not have a good level of scoring. Even tighter checking teams won who had a few guys on the team that could consistently put the puck in the back of the net.
Again Kulich, Doan, Quinn, Benson, Rosen and others CAN become this however they are not there year and you cannot count on these players because outside of Quinn. Most are very early in their NHL careers. So yea we need at least 1 experienced scoring winger like Tippett. Noris could have been this for the Sabres however you cannot count on him at all. Sorry but you cant anyone that thinks they can is a fool. And yes that Cousin's trade was stupid because just look at Noris. I would rather have traded Cousin's for a Prospect that is nearly ready for the NHL that had been scoring a ton in the AHL and a pick than Noris.

  18. The game was very one sided. We had some good looks but no one could put it in. Kesselring had the best opportunity but overall the Sabres just couldn't keep up with the speed of the Mammoth. We have a new unintentional "kid line" but the big guns of the Sabres fell silent once again. Lyon was the only reason we got a point out of this.

  19. We got very lucky to get a point.. Lyon was awesome. Team needs to get healthy. Half the lineup is from Rochester. Currently playing without Benson, Norris, Kulich, Zucker, Kozak, and Danforth. 6 out of 12 forwards out is alarming.

  20. I had seats close to the glass. It was a much tighter game than the stats show. We had a lot of scoring chances that we didn’t bury. Way too many cute passes instead of just shooting the puck. Really annoying and Lindy needs to drill this out of them. The goal in OT was horrific defensive coverage by Jack Quinn. He literally let Keller skate right by him.

  21. I went into this game thinking “I’ll be happy if we can just get a point”. We were missing 4 of our top 6 forwards, and playing a good team. And then I watched Keller skate directly past all 3 of our guys in overtime and bury a goal from 2 feet away from the crease. It wasn’t even like some highlight real goal, his brilliant strategy was to skate directly at the net and shoot from close range, he faced 0 resistance and it just worked. Still happy with the point but Jesus our OTs have got to get better.

  22. The longer Tuch goes without a extension it leads to 2 outcomes (because Buffalo should not give Tuch $11.5milx8)- he stays & leaves as a UFA or he is traded as part of another in season hockey trade. Adams has done a better job of rebuilding the goalie talent in the pipeline. The waiver claim of Ellis is to give Buffalo another option for at least this season to turn to. Levi has to play in 29 more NHL games to lose his waiver claim exemption (at least this season) so he is not going anywhere. Lyon showing early that he is a 1A goalie puts Buffalo in a much better spot with their goalie situation. UPL signed for another 3 seasons is a plus if he can show that he is a steady top 15/16 starter. I see a hockey trade (at least one) happening sometime during the season. With Rosen & Ostlund starting to put up NHL points it will give Adams more trade options to make that in season hockey trade. Adams with Ruff is a good combination because together they are putting the Sabres into a much better position for this season & beyond. Pegula needs to stay patient with the Adams/Ruff combo.
