Um, you can I trust my pet with Little Bear and I encourage you to do the same at little bearonline.com or check them out in person on St. Catherine across from West Mount Square. Marco, the depth of the Montreal Canadians to me has been one of the more um pleasing aspects of this season with Suzuki on 20 points, Cole Coughfield on 18 points. I mean, we’re talking about um seven players that are already in double digit scorings. Cole Caulfield’s projected for like a 50-goal season. I mean, the guy’s just on fire after um a two-goal performance in the 6-2 win Saturday over Utah. But what about the contributions they’re getting from the back end? Let’s talk about how elite some of these guys are, in particular, what Lane Hudson is up to. They got a mushmouth syndrome today. He’s on 13 points through 15 games. and Mike Mat three goals and nine points through 15 games. I mean, we’re talking about Noah. I mean, gee, I didn’t even mention Noah Dobson. I mean, there’s so many options here, brother. This is the first time since the pandemic where there could be a team with three defenseman that could be at 50 points or higher. That’s pretty good for a team that wants to do some damage in the regular season. But what and I, you know, I alluded to this the other day. Um, Noah Dobson right now ranks in the elite of the NHL. I believe number one, if not number two at the moment of this, uh, of this, uh, you know, uh, drop in five on five scoring for defenseman. And I don’t mean even strict. I mean five on five. That means no OT, no four on four, five on five. And it really goes to show you um exactly what they are looking for in terms of the impact of Noah Dobson. Not only has he transformed the team defensively, I think everybody’s in a in a good spot, but he also has made the process better. He’s made everything easier in terms of the transition. He’s helped simplify Mike Mat’s game. You’re starting to see him bring more offense, right? like this is his passing in the offensive zone, his shoot threat in the offensive zone. Like it’s just creating more chances whenever he’s on the ice and lines are definitely at forward are taking advantage. I mean, I think I made the comment yesterday when Mike Mat and Noah Dobson are on the ice with the Canadians fourth line, the most dangerous forward on the ice is Noah Doppson. And that’s not by chance. It’s because he controls the pace of the game to such an elite level that even with Kaden Goully out at five on five when they’re trying not trying to defend a lead but just trying to play their game they have probably one of the top three trio defenseman in the NHL right now the way that they’re playing I mean right like Kale Mar as we speak is in god mode he cannot be touched player cheat code just just nothing there. Yeah. Who’s second in defensive scoring? Lane Hudson. Right. And Lane Hudson is flirting with the point per game status. He’s got 13 points in 15 games. And then Noah Dobson who is not even on first wave of the power play. Exactly. Is right there with 11 points. Right. And you know to me you look at these guys play you look at everybody else that plays uh around and is you know jockeying for position. Mero Heiskin plays on power play one. Morgan Riley plays on power play one. Josh Morrisy plays on power play one. Eric Carlson plays on power play one. Victor Hedman plays on power play one. Charlie Makavoy plays on power play one. Matthew Schaefer is a cheat code in the making. Uh and John Carlson plays on power play one. So does Mikuel Sergev. So do Jake Sanderson. So does Adam Fox. But oh noon plays on power play too. And he’s right up there with them. And one of his 11 points came on the power play. the rest is five on five. So, it goes to show you that that offense that he provides is translatable in the most crucial evaluation process of an NHL performance. Five on five dependability. And I think and I I’ll stop touching on Noah Doson. really do want to get on Mike Mat, but I think having Noah adopts in the way that he plays right now, his insertion takes the load off of of Ela Hudson offensively because it was basically Lane Hudson on an island by himself last year and it takes the load off of Mike Mat defensively so that he can now simplify his game and it isn’t, you know, a turnover machine on the breakout anymore. He also has an option in case there is excessive pressure being put on him. Isn’t it doubly surprising when we talk about the projections, right? Like Lane Hudson projected for 70 71 points. Noah Doson on pace for a 60point season. But how many people were aware of this? Noah Dobson has one power play point. It’s a it’s an assist. Lane Hudson has three power play assists this season of all the all the contributions that he’s done. It’s not like he’s, you know, give you an extreme example like Mark Striding this or Sheldon Sur this like just feasting on the power play and getting these goddy numbers, right? I mean, it’s just um to me it’s it’s more evidence about the well-roundedness and the reliability of these two guys in particular. I mean, it’s it’s quite something when you dive into their numbers, those two guys specifically. My two cents, and I’m not championing for this to happen, but my two cents, Noah Dobson would be second in defensive scoring in the NHL if he played on the first wave of the power play. I was going to say I mean I mean I don’t be point production wise, right? Yeah. And I’m not saying that they need to put him there. I’m just saying, you know, knowing what he can do at five on five, if he were on the first power play wave, his numbers would be even higher. That’s all I got to say. It’s not it’s not a it’s not a knock on on Lane Hudson who has done a fantastic job on that first wave. All I’m saying is you can only have one defenseman on your first wave and they have three really good options to put there. Two if you really want to get into it. Um and and the fact that no adoption is doing all this at five on five while being a stabilizing force on defense. I mean, again, you know, Islanders fans do their best on social media to try and and rub the fact that, you know, they got a couple of good players in that trade of course, but again, the best the best player in that trade is no adoption without a shadow of a doubt. And when you look at the impact that he has, teams generally trade more for a player like that if we look at, you know, the other trades for similar players in the last couple of uh I would say the last decade. If we get into Mike Mat, like the average point production from Hudson to Dobson to Mat is 11 points. You know, Lane Hudson leads the way. He’s got 13. We talked about Noah Dobson and his 11 points with with 10 assists. Mike Mat and his nine, right? I mean, it’s We’ve spoken about this. We’ve spoken about this on on episodes on live shows. It’s almost unanimous. If you’re looking for an MVP out of the gate, if you’re not mentioning Cole Caulfield’s name, you’re probably mentioning Mike Mat’s name. All situations player, but it’s amazing to see his development from a more or less a whipping boy to be dramatic a year ago. The reason why the Canadians were defensively poor, getting walked around, whatever, however you chose to see Mike Mat play last season, not only is he an all situations player, a minute eating machine for the Montreal Canadians and and Martine St. his offense has not gone away either. It’s just um kind of surprising to to and I guess a testament to his professionalism taking any role and then really not missing a beat. And I got to think his ability to be just a great skater helps his game so much. He is the only defenseman in the NHL over the age of 30 playing 25 minutes or more in the NHL. Wow. The only one. Everybody else. Quinn Hughes 26. Zachary Zachary Zack Warensky 28. Travis Sanheim 29. Kale Mar 27 already. Um Murro Heiskin in 26. Morit Cider 24. Jackson Lome 24. And then there’s Mike Mat 31. Eighth in the NHL for average time on ice. And you know if you had to filter for even strength, he’s seventh in the NHL for time on ice. That is insane. It is. And so when we talk about can Mike Mat sign a long-term deal with the Montreal Canadians without it looking bad towards the middle totail end of it, you know, and I say longterm, I mean like five years, you know, like I’m not let’s not we’re not going eight unless he takes like a $3 million AEV, right? But what I would say is watching him play, I am less likely to think that his play is going to dramatically dip because he’s in such good physical shape. Yeah. I mean, at 31 years old, you’re playing 25 minutes a game. Meanwhile, you’re surrounded by all these young Bucks uh that are like three to four to five to six years into their career. This guy’s like 13 years into his career. Um, so it is it is um it is a fortuitous thing for the Canadians. But all this while Kaden Gully is out and I think that’s that’s what’s really interesting is that when most teams lose such an important piece like a Kaden Goully who on I would say at least half the teams in the NHL he’d be pushing for top pair minutes. Yeah. um to when they get him back. I mean, they’re going to be firing on all cylinders and that will be one of the most complete top fours in the NHL. And we talked about this, right? Like I don’t necess I’m not going to say that they’re the they’re the best, right? There are better top fours out there right now. You can you can look around. I think I think Colorado is really solid, but they’re they’re elevated. Why? Because Kale Mar is god mode, right? There are other teams, but what I think is long-term fit, the Canadians have the best top four core in the NHL. Mhm. And they’re only going to continue to add to that if David Ryan Bacher reaches his potential and when they when they funnel in a guy like Adam Angstrom. But I think what’s very intriguing is outside of Matthysse, all these guys are signed long term. Exactly. So when I spoke when I speak to to pro scouts about, you know, the Canadians defense, all I’m told is they’re not only built for today’s NHL, they’re built for tomorrow’s NHL. And I think the other comment I got was they make transition fast. They make counterattack hockey. That was it. They make counterattack hockey fun because the Canadians, we talk about the Canadians as a quick paced team, a fast team. I think we saw it on Saturday night. They were a very fast team when they were in confidence. Yep. Agreed. That stems from the blue line. That stems from the three men we just brought up that are able to kill plays, turn it around, make the quick play in transition to take the puck the other way. And what I think is different this year from last year’s is they join the offensive rush. Correct. You look at Lane Hudson on Saturday night. How many times was he like not only was he following the rush at some points he was leading the rush correct right and and jumping in on the play and and you know bringing in coming in as the fourth man to destabilize the defensive structure of the opposition. That kind of play, that kind of hockey IQ, that kind of impact in transition maybe isn’t quantifiable because he’s not holding the puck. So you’re not really measuring what he’s doing, but that opens up the game for the for the forwards in a way that the Canadians did not do last year and to me is a very big factor in explaining why the Canadians are scoring at a higher clip to start the season visav last year’s. Listen, you’ve got the horses. Don’t keep them in the stable. Let them run. Right. And I’ll tip my captain Martine St. Louis. I disagreed with it at the time. I was a little worried about uh Dobson and Mat as a pairing, but I mean, he talked about it. He let everybody know exactly what their strategy was. Speed can be a great way to play defense. And 15 games into this season on this game day, Havs hosting LA at 7:00 tonight. Um he was bang on through 15 games. And I think, you know, watching this episode, you have a clearer picture of of why that is and why the Montreal Canadians have one of the more elite top four blueline systems right now in the National Hockey League. Don’t forget, we’re going to be live Wednesday morning. That will be tomorrow to recap and dive deep on the Habs and LA Kings. ngl it's funny how our defense went from the most concerning part of our team two years ago to being the strongest part of our team in 2025. i love this defensive core frl
Do you guys think Matheson gets some Olympic consideration?
Dobson's addition is so big it had made Mailloux and Reinbacher expendable. Heck he gave the Habs leverage against Hutson in negotiations. Dobson is right up there now with Suzuki in terms of importance to this team. If Suz or Dob get injured this team is screwed.
It’s time to part ways with Guhle. He’s a consistent paper lion. The guy cannot be trusted to stay healthy. Dach and Guhle should be trade bait for reliable talent
About the defense, I think Montreal has the best defensive core , but what’s gonna happen next year ? The habs can’t keep reinbacher which they wasted a 5th overall in the AHL , Engstrom doesn’t belong in the ahl either and the habs must resign Matheson , the habs will be forced to trade 2 of them at least , next season they’ll have 9 nhl ready defensemen , so who’s going? Personally I’d trade reinbacher and Guhle if he can’t stay healthy . A thing is sure the habs will have to make room as they can afford to keep matheson passed the deadline if they’re not gonna keep him , Matheson’s value is through the roof right now, so what are they gonna do?🤷🏼♂ It’s a good problem to have
They’ll keep Dobson and hutson for sure but who will be the other 5 guys staying?
Dobson has been way better then I personally expected. And I expected a lot! I think he's getting better and better too. Be nice to see him make the olympic team. GHG!
Of NHL defensemen with 10 NHL games, Noah Dobson is 2nd in the NHL in Points/60 minutes on even strength. Cale Makar is 1st. Alexandre Carrier is 15th, Lane Hutson is 19th & Mike Matheson is 25th. Alexandre Carrier has 6 even-strength points in only 14:47 minutes/game, compared to Lane Hutson, who has 7 even-strength points in 18:04 minutes of even-strength per game.
A bit of an out of the box idea.
When Guhle comes back, what do you think of the idea of pairing him with Carrier. Guhle could elevate Carrier to get his mojo back. (Carrier's play appears to dip a little bit. Maybe it is taking a toll mentally for wanting to back-up Xhekaj if there is a defensive breakdown). Guhle with Carrier would give the Habs 3 solid D pairs that St. Louis trusts in any situations. It could help even out the minutes (i.e. cut down Matheson's minutes a bit). Struble and Xhekaj could rotate as Hutson's partner or give Guhle or Carrier a rest once in awhile. Both Hutson and Guhle can play on the right side when they pair with Struble or Xhekaj. As St. Louis said the Habs have depth this year. Why not take advantage of it? The schedule is so compact, spreading out the minutes seem like a good idea.
There are 60 minutes per game for the 3 pairs of D-men. Obviously, game situations such as power plays, penalty kills will dictate how the D-men are being deployed. In a vacuum, if Matheson & Dobson play 22 minutes, Hutson & Struble/Xhekaj play 21 minutes, Guhle & Carrier play 17 minutes. I think it would work great. It saves Matheson's legs, helps Carrier and hopefully keeps Guhle from injury. Late in the game, St. Louis could switch around depending on the situation.
I know Matheson is a stud but easing his minutes a bit now should help the Habs in March, April and playoffs (and probably prolong his career).
I would be interested in your thoughts on this.
My apologies for bringing up the same talking point. But who do you feel will sit once Ghule comes back. Or specifically who do you feel is the most useful to the team more at this time.
We got it made in the shade 😂
