The Pelicans need to do something and that something is firing head coach Willie Green. And if it doesn’t happen now, is it ever going to happen? I’ll tell you why this is the most the best time you could choose to make this change and why it is long overdue. And we’ll look at it through the lens of this blowout loss to the Phoenix Suns. I want to get into what the heck happened to the defense here. But hey, the rookies showed like some literal fight. That part is actually kind of nice to see. So, let’s get into this one. 12198 loss for New Orleans. It’s time. It’s been time to move on from head coach Willie Green. And while Willie Green is not the sole problem for all of what’s going on here as New Orleans starts the season 2 and eight, it’s not good. He’s not part of the solution. And you’re seeing the exact same thing over and over and over again. An offense that shows some things here and there, but for the most part just looks flat. Basically, the Pelicans were not just competing against the Phoenix Suns in this game. They were competing against the shot clock in this game. felt like they were just shoot making life so much harder on themselves. The defense atrocious. It’s been atrocious all year long. We’ll break more of that down in the next segment here. Just a lack of effort fight from this team. That has been the case all season long. This cannot be considered acceptable. And while there are larger problems here, you’ve got to triage what you can. And that is probably moving on from your head coach and figuring out if that just it’s not even probably you have to do this that at least maybe sees if you can do something if it lights a fire under these guys. At least you learn what was causing part of the problem. But you can absolutely see a team that at times has quit on their head coach that just doesn’t have it. Willie Green’s a nice guy. You don’t want to fire him. Sure. Congrats on subjecting everybody to four more games of this. What was the point of this? Those two wins that they’ve had, does that matter at this point now when you’re two and eight? How long ago do those wins feel? What was the point of all of this? The players, you can see it. You You absolutely can see it on the court that they’re just going through the motions. You want to make them go through that more? That’s what’s happening here. Every day they wait is just creating a worse kind of vibe around the team. Yeah, they’ll be competitive certain nights. They’ll have pride and show up in spurts here and there in a game because they’re professional athletes, get paid millions of dollars, but you can see there are clearly some just broken things with this team. You have a fivegame home stand coming up. It’s really like an eightgame home stand. You know, they play eight of their, sorry, they play eight of their next nine games at home. You have an opportunity to now fire Willie Green, have five home games where it just helps with all of that. Look, I I can tell you pretty certainly here that they were going to fire him after that 0 and6 start. I don’t know what changed for them to not do that all of a sudden, but I don’t see how you can justify it much more. You beat two not great teams in close fashion. That’s not an encouraging sign here. The roster does not have the depth and does not look great. I saw a lot of people I talked about this yesterday being like, well, no Zoo. Even with those guys, if you put Zion Williamson in this game for New Orleans, they wouldn’t have won and they still would have lost by 15 at a minimum. There are big roster issues right now attempting to do this two timeline plan that isn’t working at this point. So, you need to make the change because if you don’t do it when you have a fiveame home stand, when you have eight games out of your next nine at home, then you’re never going to do it. And we’re just going to have to be subjected to this all season long. The players will get more upset and it just is going to create a mess here. Don’t make anyone else go through this even more. It’s a disaster. The look, there’s some worst situations in the league. The Kings look like a mess. The the Mavs look like a mess. You don’t want to be in that mix. The Mavs need to fire Nico Harrison. They, you know, we’ll see if that ends up happening, but if they do that, they’re at least taking, you know, attempting to address things. New Orleans now just Do do people care? If people care, then this can’t be acceptable anymore. Otherwise, you send the message that, hey, we as an organization, the front office ownership, players don’t care. So why should the fans and that sucks to say before Thanksgiving? It’s time. There’s two plays in this game, two things that sum up what happened here to me. You had an ATO after timeout call in the first quarter that resulted in a shot clock violation. The Pelicans ranked 27th in atto plays this season. Towards the end of the third quarter, Grayson Allen, who torched New Orleans all night long, 42 points. I don’t know if that’s a careerhigh for him. I’m just assuming. He was What? What did he shoot from three? 10 of 15 from three. 10 of 15 from three. Are you freaking kidding me? And there was a simple pick and roll action, pick and pop action. New Orleans switched. They had no communication. They did not know what to do. And Grayson Allen is wide open for three at basically the end of the third quarter. I don’t even know which made three that was for him. But for a guy that torched you all night long, for this team to not have any sort of adjustments in the game or game plan for something one like that or just get the ball out of his hands, do something, anything. Well, then what are we doing here at this point in time? You you call a timeout, you have time to draw up a play, and you have a shot clock violation, and then the dude who’s just burning you from three, you just leave wide open like it doesn’t even matter, like you don’t even know he’s been hot. Again, what is the point of all this? You can clearly see the players don’t care. There are some flashes, but the moment things get tough for this Pelicans team, the moment they face adversity in a game, they fold. And that has been the mark of this team for a while. It’s literally reflected in the way that they are not a physical team out there on the court. This game was just disgusting. And it’s on Joe Dumar’s, too. We like the rookies. Great. Then just focus on that. But now Zion with the injury, his trade value is going to be even lower. Trey Murphy the third looks fed up at times. Herb Jones. Do you think Herb Jones is just awesome? It’s not great. And given some of the questionable decisions the front office and leadership has made, do you feel confident that they will be the group to lead New Orleans out of this mess? They’re going to do it. They’re not going to fire Joe Dumars, but it’s the reason why you’re looking at Nico Harrison being forced out. He created this mess, so you don’t really feel comfortable that he’ll get you out of this mess. Kind of the same situation here with Joe Dumar. They have wasted the season by carrying Willie Green into this year. At least you’ll have some nice rookies. Look, that’s not bad. That’s a nice consolation prize. I mean that. But they didn’t look great tonight. We’ll talk more about them in the third segment coming up next. Let’s let’s look at the defense because I really want to get into that because that’s Willie Green’s calling card. He’s a defensive coach. He’s a defensive guy. Let’s look at the defense coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Today’s episode of Lockdown Pelicans is brought to you by FanDuel. So, you just get blown out by the Phoenix Suns. And Phoenix has not they’re not a great team. I don’t think they’re a a horribly bad team. They were five and five going into this game, but they had an offensive rating that was ranking middle of the league, 16th going into tonight. It was good in this one to say the least. New Orleans provided absolutely no resistance whatsoever in this game for Phoenix on the offensive side of the ball. They would have ranked in the top 10 um a little bit higher than that based on their offensive rating tonight. They couldn’t miss shots because New Orleans did not do anything to make their life difficult. And this has been a problem all season long. I think if you want to get into coaching and I I think things about rotations and stuff like that, like that doesn’t bother me as much. I actually think Willie Green has done a good job of kind of feeling the the roster, the rotation over the past couple of games, truthfully. Um, so I and every team and I and I know this cuz I cover the league as a whole too and I talk to all other hosts. You hear the same thing. Everyone hates their coaches rotation. It’s not unique to New Orleans. Whatever. It can still be bad, too. You know, the timeout stuff doesn’t bother me as much. Certain coaches like to let players play through it. Some don’t. Joe Missoula doesn’t really call timeouts when opponents go on runs. Like all that criticism to me is so minor that it doesn’t I think focusing on that too much takes away from the better points to make about why they should fire Willie Green and they should fire Willie Green. You know, one of the the big one to me though is the defense looking so bad this year. You saw it immediately in this game what was going wrong. Now got the heat going on in the house because it’s cold out and now I’m like too hot as I do this show. So excuse me here for a second. So, I take my jacket off. So, the defense was bad to start and you saw the issues immediately. It was like point of attack defense. They could not contain the ball. They’re constantly in defensive rotations and as the ball moves for Phoenix, they’re going to find an open man and it was often just a wideopen three or some other really easy shot for them to take. The Phoenix Suns took 43 threes. They made 44.2% of them, 19 of them. New Orleans lost that battle significantly here. They were 10 for 32. You know, when you have ball movement like that, it’s easy to find wide open threes. Those will come. And New Orleans made it too easy on the Phoenix on the Phoenix offense by letting them dribble, drive, attack. Again, failure to contain the ball, failure to disrupt the point of attack. And this has been the case all season long. So, if you want to point to something on coaching and be like, “This is why he needs to be let go.” We’ve seen the same issue on defense over and over and over this season. This is when you’ve had time to make adjustments, to watch some film. You hear Willie Green be like, “We had a good film study. We had a good film study.” Is it that good if the same mistakes keep cropping up? This is what I said in the open of today’s show or in the beginning of today’s show. It’s all the same thing again. We have seen this before. We have seen this movie before. you know, if you lose in different ways, different things keep coming up. There’s larger problems with that. But I can kind of live with that. But it being just the exact same thing over and over and over again is not okay with me. That’s where you you have data, you need to make changes, you need to make adjustments, alter your game plan, and you you have no ability to do that right now. They’re struggling with that. You know, when it’s like you you got to find some answers. There are no answers to have here for this team, at least with this coaching staff. You know, whether they’re just not taking a different approach, whether they believe in their process, like none of it’s working right now. You need to do something more dramatic to try and get better results here because the results do matter this year. Look, if you want to not have your pick next year, that’s fine. You know, you you want to call Derk Queen the pick, next year’s pick early. I get behind that. Even if that process is still flawed, even if I like Derrick Queen as a player, he he’s not one of he wouldn’t be one of the top five guys in next year’s draft. Like, not at all. Even with the moments that he’s flashed so far this season, this upcoming draft class, if you’ve watched the start of college, looks really, really good. So sure, you know, you can be like, we got we got it early, but at least get as ready for this season as possible, and you’re not going to do that with Willie Green. You are seeing just a continuation of him as a head coach. There is not the growth you need to see. There are some changes. He’s playing the rookies more in certain things like that kind of at times, but it’s just not working. And the results are showing still that it’s not working. And that’s why you need to make a big change if this defense was elite again. I you could make an argument to keep him. But the fact is they ranked 27th on defense. We’re we’re 10 games into the season. You’re about an eighth of the way there. Like we we know what this team is at this point. We know that they’re not going to change. If they were going to change, you would have seen some signs of it by now. And truthfully, you haven’t. Even in the close competitive games, I would not say that they have looked particularly good. So, we know nothing’s going to change. So, do we just accept it? If that’s the case, like that sucks, right? This goes to what I said in the beginning of the show here of ownership. The front office needs to show that this isn’t okay, that this they care about this team. It matters to them because otherwise, why should the fans care? And right now, the wrong message is being sent. I’ve talked a lot, the everydayers are probably sick of this about the perception of the team and New Orleans by keeping head coach Willie Green is doing nothing to change that perception. I was thinking about this like when eventually he’s not head coach because he will not be the head coach next year. You know, when when I do the show of like why would a head coach take this job? Like what makes this appealing? People are get Mike Malone, get Taylor. Why would they take this job right now? And then there’s actually a joke that came to me about it of well they’d take the job because they know they can’t get fired basically except they fired Sam Van Gundy after one year. But you know David Griffin while wanting to move on from head coach Willie Green probably kind of used too many coaches. That was his third. You weren’t going to let him make a fourth. So you know that’s one of the dangers of the holdover coach. If we we all knew how this would go. Maybe the Pelicans diluted themselves into thinking it wouldn’t but that speaks to them. I I you know I was literally looking in the mirror yesterday being like well if you can’t figure that out you know I want you to look in the mirror and see what you look like and know what you look like and have that self-reflection and this team seems incapable of that that’s discouraging going forward or if they’re just doing it because he’s a nice guy like you’re not trying to be the most competitive then we we could have seen this coming. a lot of people did and it’s not a surprise and it just makes it feel like it’s a wasted year even if the rookies are playing well because you could be doing more right now than where you are. And so just for the fact that you got two rookies that look promising doesn’t make this okay and it shouldn’t be okay. Coming up next, let’s look at the rookies a little bit more though. They they struggled in this one. Everyone other than Trey really struggled in this one. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Do you think Willie Green gets fired or not? Let me know what you think. We are part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day, and now the number one sports network. How cool is that to say? Let me know how long you’ve been listening in the comments down below. I’m actually very curious about that. I know a lot of y’all have been with me for a very long time, and I greatly, greatly appreciate that. And if you’ve been with me for a long time, you know I’m not often being like they got they got to fire somebody. They got to fire somebody. And I did it last year when everyone’s like, “You love,” not everyone. Some people are like, “You love Willie Green?” It’s like third show of the year last year. I was like, “They should probably make a move here.” Um, but they definitely need to make a move now. So, the rookies in this game did show some fight, literally Derek Queen, Jeremiah Fears getting into it with Dylan Brooks, who’s an annoying player, and that was nice to see. They both struggled in this one. You know, this is going to happen for Jeremiah Fears. 15 points on four of 13 shooting. He was saved by the fact that he made three of six from three and got to the line four times. These type of nights are going to happen. You know, he’s slightly undersized. He still hasn’t filled out his frame, though. You can see he’s put on more muscle since summer league, but he’s still adjusting to the physicality of the NBA. Adjusting to like what refs call. Is that a foul? Is that not? Are they going to call that? Are they not? That’s something that he struggles with a little bit as well. Those are the type of things that it’s just going to be an adjustment. He will eventually get figured out, but you’re going to have games like this. And I like that they’re still sticking with him. Him playing almost 31 minutes in this game is good for his development. The only way you figure this stuff out is by going out and playing and just getting those repetitions. And these I do think are very valuable for him. Derek Queen struggled until really later in the fourth quarter, but even then couldn’t really get it going. Yet, no one did for New Orleans. 12 points, five of 10 shooting, not too bad. Two of two from the line, six rebounds, just one assist in this one. with the offense looking as flat as it did, a lack of movement, no one really doing much of of anything here, this was just going to be a problem for him, right? You know, as as an offensive hub and doing some things, and we’ll break down his game a little bit more tomorrow. Um, you you need some off ball movement. And if people aren’t doing that, well, yeah, that’s kind of part of the problem here, I think, and that’s what’s led to some of the issues for him. So hopefully hopefully you can see some things change a little bit and that they can just get a little bit more invigorated to kind of move some more because this team definitely needs it if they want to get the offense back on track and if you want to see Derrick Queen succeed. He had a tough go of this. You know the centers for the Phoenix Suns, Mark Williams in particular has looked have looked particularly good I think for them. So there is something to be said for that. It’s kind of funny how he failed a physical just a year ago and now looks pretty decent there, but situation will do that for you. You know, this is why trying to kind of be competitive now, but having rookies who are not going to play great at times doesn’t make a ton of sense. Trey Murphy did play well, 21 points, leading scoreer on the night. I thought he had moments when he didn’t try or care, and I think that’s true of everybody here, but for the most part played pretty hard. He was battling on the glass, doing what he could. I was pretty impressed with him playing downhill, getting to the line. Nine trips to the free throw line is very, very good. Three-point shot, not really falling. Two of seven from there. You’d like to see it every minute he’s on the court. Playing 33 minutes here, I’d say you probably got like 28 solid minutes from him. His defense was not good. That goes to what we just said, but that also goes to everyone on this team just not caring, I think, on that side of the ball. So, it’s tough to evaluate. Like, it’s tough to evaluate this team when things just don’t feel good, don’t look good around them. But, let me know who you thought played well in the comments down below. That’s going to do it for this episode of Locked On Pelicans. Going to do a deeper dive on Queens offensive game in tomorrow’s show. I’ll have Dylan Sanders on with me as well. I’m excited to break that down. Some X’s and O’s talk and some other things. I I would not be shocked if we get some news as well about head coach Willie Green with that long homestead coming up. Of course, if that happens, we’ll pivot to that. Lot to cover here on Lockdown Pelican. So, please subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. We jus the need the LEADER of this team back on the floor which is Dejounte Murray
just protest the games until they fire willie this is insulting
Yeah, I think I'm done with Willie Green. It's clear he didn't learn from the OKC sweep. I get the inclination to chalk last year up to injuries, but the strategtic shortcoming of not prioriitizing perimeter defense to start games is something even fans can see.
It's funny how increasingly depressed you look as the season goes on.
Many since he been the coach he been without his starters year after year. This year missing 4 starters. Chill with the rage bait like another coach will do a better job with what they have at the moment
This man was playing Zone all night against shooters… and in the interview said he felt Zone defense gave us a boost… 🤨 even the commentators during the game said if they were a shooter against zone they’d be salivating… Willie has to go… he really doesn’t know what he’s doing… worst coach in the NBA for sure
Straight up terrorist organization
stop it. it’s not willie greens fault his star player is NEVER available
Jake means more to NOLA than Willie, Joe and most of the organisation. Do it for him, Pels. Do what's right.
Every dayer comment
I stopped watching before halftime, same story 9 times out of 10. Didn't help i had the suns broadcast 😂
Trade Trey, Herb and Zion. Pels are wasting these guy's careers. I would love to see these with a competent coach and organization.
Not fun to watch. I stopped watching before the half. This happening way too often. Need a spark, a reason to watch. Hard to see a respected coach come into this mess at this point of the year.
It seems like the pelicans rookies have higher IQs than the veterans. They look so dumb sometimes and lost on the court
I thought once the Pelicans are 3-9…Billie Green would be fired. Now, it's starting to look like once this team is eliminated from play in contention…Willie" Play-in" Green will be fired.
Hey Jake. Great video. I have one quick question. I saw a discussion from a bunch of people that the Pelicans weren’t doing a promotional calendar, and they stopped doing the watch parties. Is this a sign the pelicans will leave New Orleans once the 2029 lease expires?
Hi Jake
I told y'all that Willie green should have been fired. Maybe in the second game that he coached when you keep doing the same thing, getting the same results and thinking it's gonna work. We know what that's called. It seems like every coach that the Pelicans get don't have sense enough to know when to call a timeout. We let teams go on long runs on us before we call a timeout. Then, we gotta fight so hard to come back. It's been happening over and over. We go on the run, then we gotta coach stupid enough to call timeout for the other team.😢😢
My fellow small market fans, I feel for yall. Magic fans have had their pitchforks out for Coach Mose this season due to missed expectations and just now temporarily set them down after last nights game winner from Bane. Pels have good young talent, hang in there !!
Just change the channel name to locked on fire Willie green. We are a joke of a franchise
It doesn’t matter what coach you get the result will be the same. And by the way Zion is missing games already!
Every dayer
I went to bed in the 2nd quarter
bruh same offensive sets, same defensive struggles wide open shooters, No adjustments on booker or allen
I said to fire Willie Green 2 years ago. He is like PEnn State Football, BEST at being th eworst. Just terrible. HE takes Zion out of the game 1st. Show me a street ball gaem, High school, College, Pro where best player comes out of a bball game 1st………………………………………………………………………………………….ONLY WIllie Green and ZION
I still think they are fun to watch specially dq but god damn we need some wins 😂
I watched that whole thing. I wish I could be one of those fans to jump from team to team. I’m stuck with this team and I’m just so tired, tired of having good players but the team sucks, so the players leave and let’s try another rebuild. Then eventually it fails and back we go again. Loved the 07/08 season and 17/18 season. I guess we have a good team every 10 years
Hire Mark Jackson
Firing Willie is definitely step one. The problem is, you can't really take step two, because everyone's trade value is low, and we don't have our own pick. It's pretty clear we need to blow this up. Zion is not ever gonna be available on a regular basis, and this roster construction doesn't make sense without him. Doing that this year is not a good idea, cause no team that wants him is gonna have a better pick in the draft than us. Also, Zion's contract is terrible for a guy who should be a roleplayer. His skill set is not broad enough to build a contending team around (he is like a Giannis with no defensive upside and less length, and a worse shot), but we're stuck paying him superstar money. I think the reality is we're just gonna be bad with no hope for at least this and next year and if the organization finally comes to their senses, they will have a fire sale for picks and upside after the draft this year. Until then I'll just watch OKC and actually enjoy watching people play basketball well.
Willie is NOT the problem!
I was on here before the shows went to video I believe. At least 5 years 🤣🤣
What you're likely missing, him playing the rookies is likely his excuse as to why we are losing. Dumar likely made that deal
Zion is the problem. The Pelicans should have gotten value from him. Stupidity is why the Saints and Pelicans are hot garbage.
These losses ain't got nothing to do with two timelines lol.
No Zion, no Poole, no center depth is not an excuse, it's a reality. Being forced to start rookies, no matter how talented, is excusable. Find some positivity to discuss. I'm starting to swipe past these bit@hing videos.
I didn't watch this one, only wanted to comment on the title because I already heard the commentary before.
It’s obvious there’s a cancer in that locker room. Willie Green is ignorant of it, or complicit. He should be fired in either case.
