Ja Morant, Memphis Grizzlies searching for answers ahead of game vs New York Knicks
In my five seasons of covering the Memphis Grizzlies, I’ve seen John Morant, Jiren Jackson Jr. have some slumps, but this slump right now that John Morant is in is the most concerned I’ve ever been while he’s been in a slump. We’re going to talk about why. We’re going to talk about Zack Edit. and we’re going to preview the game against the Knicks coming up here on Locked on Grizzlies. We’re going to talk about that game specifically a little later in the show, but we got to talk about the Grizzly Star point guard at the top of today’s show. We got to talk about Jaw Morant. As I stated in the opening, Jaw Morant is going through a slump right now, right? And we’ve seen Jaw have these we’ve every player, every NBA player, and I think Tomas Iselo alluded to this when I talked to him about every player goes through slumps, but there’s varying levels of concerns when these things happen. and we’re going to break down kind of, you know, uh, what happened, what’s happened up to this point with John Mar, what he said, what Tomasman Ceil has said, and then I’ll kind of give my take on the situation as well. But we got to start with pretty much just the numbers. Like, why am I even presenting this as a concern? Well, number one, it’s five consecutive games where John Morant has shot below 40%. And I know Joe Mullen talked about this a little bit uh in yesterday’s show, but I want to I want to touch on a little bit more because I think Joe talked about Jaw and Jiren needing to get more from both of those players and I certainly agree with that point and but the difference here is with Jiren, his efficiency is pretty good. This is more of the coach and Jiren kind of needing to figure out how to maximize him. Uh with Jaw just feels a little bit different. But let’s get into the numbers real quick. uh five consecutive games below 40% from the field uh from John Morant overall. Not 40% from below 40% from three-point range, 40 below 40% from the field. Um if you want to go even beyond that, of the the games that Jaws played in this season, the G again, the Grizzlies are four and seven. Jaw has played uh in nine of those games, he’s only eclipsed 50% shooting twice. M no, excuse me, he’s only eclipsed 40% shooting twice. In those two games, he did shoot above 50%. But if you take away those two games, seven games sub 40% shooting from the field. So John Moran essentially has more games, way more games shooting below 40% than he does above 40 40%. You’re talking about a 7 to2 uh split there. Then when you look at the numbers in totality, gets a little bit, you know, gets gets worse. This is just not what you usually see when we talk about looking at John’s numbers. 35.8% 8% shooting from the field right now. From the field, not from three-point range, from the field. 14.8% on three-pointers. And it’s not like he’s cut the attempts down or anything. He’s shooting 14.8% on 5.4 three-point attempts per game. So, you’re talking about less than one made three per game while attempting over five attempts. And then this is the real concern for me uh as we talk about the shooting slump because shots fall, shots don’t fall happens, but the real part of the slump here is on twos. John is shooting 44.8% on two-point field goals right now. His previous career low is 49.9%. So, he’s essentially in his entire career been above 50% on two-point field goals. Right now, 44.8%. Numbers aren’t pretty, but but let’s get into what what John and coach said. Let’s get into what J and Tomas is said. And in short, both said not really concerned. Iso said it first. basically say he likes the shots that Jaw’s getting and he likes to think that, you know, at some point uh the law of averages will will go in the Grizzlies point guard’s favor. Uh the law of averages will eventually, you know, uh go in John Morant’s favor. He said he’s willing to live, you know, with the fact that Josh’s missing those shots because those are shots that the Grizzlies are okay with John Morant taking. Then we talked to John Morant after J pretty much said the same thing. talked about look he said I know the work that I put in you know in the practice gym in FedEx form and he says I’m not taking any shots that the defense is forcing me to take that’s these were his words he pretty much said that every shot that I’m getting is a shot that I want and a shot that I like right now just not making them so as ugly as those numbers were that I just described as bad as it has been in John’s mind make or in the mind of Tomas is same thing make or miss. But again, I said I’m concerned more than any stretch before. And going back to the two-point field goals, this is why the shooting is what it is. We’ve seen J go on, you go to the last 10 games of last season, John Morant was shooting close to 50% from three-point range. But then, you know, you look at the totality of the season, you know, he was what he was. So, he’s had, you know, those streaks before where he can shoot the ball better. But the two-point stuff is the most concerning part to me. And I asked him, you know, when we talked about when Josh said, you know, he has to shoot the ball, you know, just going to keep shooting the ball and, you know, at some point, you know, they’re going to fall. And I said, “Okay, well, you know, the two-point field goals, right? Your your scoring is down at the rim, too.” And J’s answer really stood out to me. Here’s what he said. I’m getting no foul calls. Y’all had a whole spill about running in there careless and getting hurt. So what now? That’s what y’all want me to go back to doing? Let’s end that convo right there. Because I get what he’s saying. I had to side because I I get what he’s saying. But at the same time, that answer does not provide a solution. That’s when it’s get that’s why it’s concerning because what I got out of what he said and this is something I think I briefly talked about on the show at the top of the season when we talked about the conversation that I had with Tim Leggler. One of the things that Tim Leggler talked about and it made perfect sense to me and I’ve been talking about it more since was the fact that a lot of people have had this idea that oh John Morant needs to stop going to the rim so carelessly and and all these things. When John Morant was driving to the rim and jumping through the air and, you know, doing the fancy layups and dunking all over people, he was one of the NBA’s top paint scorers, period. Not just as a guard, he led the NBA in 2022 in in paint scoring. Over 16 points per game in the paint alone. So, when you factor in the fact that this is arguably the biggest strength of his uh offense, especially his scoring, and you’re saying you have to find the balance between not going in there and getting hurt because we’ve seen it, you know, on multiple occasions, you know, against Anthony Davis one time he got knocked out the air. Christian Koko with the Lakers as well got knocked out the air one time against him got knocked out the air against Lou Dort. There’s been several examples where John Moran has went in there flying through the air, fell down, gotten injured, and that’s why those conversations were had. So, it’s finding that balance between I have to attack the basket because that’s what’s made me so good, but it’s also saying, look, I got to be available for my team. My team needs me on the floor. He has the goal of being healthy. He’s been healthy so far this season. you know, he’s missed one game and that was because of suspension. Had nothing to do, you know, with his health. So, you factor all of that in and it’s like, it’s tough. It’s tough. The simple solution is Josh has got to shoot the ball better. If you want to just get get the simple solution out the way, he’s got to shoot the basketball better. We talked about it earlier this year. The mid-range jumper was falling for him. Uh the three-point shots got to be better. All those things have got to tilt uh more in a league average, above league average direction. But this scoring around the rim stuff, it’s been more floaters. It’s been him pulling up for the mid-range jumper more and that is going to add years on to his career overall. But is it going to add years onto his career as a all-star point guard or is it just going to add years onto his career where he could just float in the league for a little bit and you know just be a middle tier point guard maybe come off the bench or something? That’s the question. That’s the question. So, how productive can John Morant still be in the paint without quote unquote recklessly going to the rim carelessly, excuse me, going to the rim in those situations? It’s a tough balance. It’s one I think he’s still figuring out uh because we’ve seen some people allude to the fact that, oh, he’s lost some athleticism or something like that. And I really don’t think that’s the case. I do not think that’s the case here. I think it’s just J is picking and choosing, you know, uh when he wants to go to the rim in those situations and it’s not a lot of choosing. It’s not a lot of choosing. He’s basically taking the floater, taking the mid-range jumper and like we just talked about those things aren’t falling. But let me know what you guys think right now. Are you concerned with the Jarant uh slump? Is this concerning to you? Are you like, “Ah, this will blow over.” You know what we talk about all the time. The bigger sample size, the bigger sample size will play itself out with Jaw. Let me know what you guys think on that equation. But coming up here next on Locked on Grizzlies, we got to talk about some of the younger Grizzlies players going down and getting some experience in the G-League. Then we’ll talk about Zack Edy as well. Make sure you stay tuned for that coming up here on Locked on Grizz. Welcome back to Locked on Grizzlies here as we got to talk about the younger guys, the young books. Uh all the guys that have went down over the last couple days to get some action in the GLeague, uh Olivier Maxon’s Prosper, Javon Small, um Jamaak, who we haven’t touched on a lot here uh recently as well, PJ Hall. So, pretty much your two-way guys and GI Jackson and Jamaek. So, pretty much five guys that Grizzlies fans have heard about a decent amount uh throughout the course of this season and coming into this season. But I went to the Hustle game over the weekend. I went to see the Memphis Hustle play their season opener. They won, I believe 133 to 117 uh against Mexico City. And pretty much all the players that I just touched on uh played well. But the first guy I want to talk about is Jamaim Meshack. We got to touch on Jamaia Meshack a little bit here because we haven’t heard much about him. If you want to get the extended version, go check out my story at the commercialappeal.com where I talked to Jamaak, uh some other players, and we kind of just broke down the entirety of his situation. He had a real a lot of really good things to say about the perspective that he’s gained being a draft pick but still not having a quote unquote NBA contract just yet. He’s planking that G-League money right now. But uh the guys look good. I I don’t think of any of the players that I just named, none of them look bad. PJ Hall led the way with 27 points to get seven boards. Uh Olivier Maxis Proer had 26 points. He was dominant early. uh that that aggressiveness, that athleticism really stood out against the G-League competition. Javon Small had 20 points and 11 assists, I believe it was. And you know, uh he’s now nursing a toe injury that’s going to keep him out in this upcoming game against the Knicks. So now he’s missed the last two games while dealing, you know, with that toe injury. So Javon Small is out after he played uh that game. But Jamime had eight points in that game, four or five shooting from the field, seven assists. We’ve seen two G-League games now from the Memphis hustle. In both games, Jamaak has played. The other guys didn’t play in the second game because the second game was at the same time as the Grizzlies game. So, they were up there with the Grizzlies, but Jamaak did. And in the second performance, seven assists. Again, that jumps out to me. That jumps out to me because one, I’m a Tennessee Vault, so I’ve seen Jamaak extensively. But in general, when you go back to his college career, over 130 appearances in college for Jamaak, his careerhigh in assists was five. His careerhigh in college assist was five. He’s had seven in both G-League games today. Seven in the first game, seven in the second game. the playmaking aspect is going to make Jamaak more of an offensive threat. That’s what he is uh wanting to be and that’s what he talked about when we had our conversation afterwards. We know he has to shoot the ball better, right? That that is kind of the premium where he’s going to get on the floor in the NBA and we saw in GLeague in summer league, excuse me, in the summer league he shot above 40% 41.7% in summer league action on three-pointers. Now granted, it was a very small sample size, but in summer league, he knocked down a few and at a decent clip. So, if he can continue to shoot the three-pointer and knock some down, we’ll see how that plays out. He’s only taken two uh through the two Memphis hustle games and and hasn’t made either of those. But even beyond that, the playmaking is going to make him much more playable on the offensive end. And I think that’s what the Grizzlies want to see from him. He talked about the fact that his aggressiveness and his playmaking both have to improve. We’re seeing signs of both of those things. And look, Jamaek is in a difficult situation. At the end of the day, we just said it. The Grizzlies have all three two-way slots taken up. You got PJ Hall, you got, you got Javon Small. It’s a hard pathway for him to to get to the floor right now, but we’re going to see how this situation continues to play out because he’s going to get a lot of time down there with the Memphis Hustle. He’s off to a good start. Just wanted to kind of highlight where he is because we won’t we haven’t been talking about Jamaak as much as some of the other guys. It’s al it also was some valuable reps for for the players that we just mentioned. PJ Hall 27 points. We touch touched on Omax big night. Javon Small Gi Jackson as well. Uh Gigi didn’t have his his greatest performance. I think he was at 15 points, six boards in that game. So he kind of blended in more so than stood out. But it was a good chance for him to continue to get those reps again. GI Jackson was the one who told the Grizzlies, “I want to go down there so I can get, you know, opportunity to to practice a little bit because he isn’t getting much time uh in to play in games with the Grizzlies and they’re not practicing a lot right now as they go through this grueling part of the schedule where it’s game after game after game. So, that’s kind of where those guys stand after getting those uh extended times in in the G-League.” But one guy who didn’t play in a G-League game, and I actually saw um some Grizzlies fans were actually hoping that that the big man would get down to South Haven was Zack Edi. Zack Edi did not play in one of those games. And as I’ve touched on over the last week, as we’ve gotten to the point where Zacky is beyond the six week mark of where the Grizzlies said he will return to action in six to nine weeks, he’s officially past six weeks. But here’s the thing. When I talk to people uh with the Grizzlies right now, he’s in that phase of I guess you want to call it ramping up or you could just say simply getting in shape. That’s the way that has been described in me. Zack Ed has to get into shape. And look, he’s not walking onto a team that’s one of the slowest playing teams in the NBA. Now, the Grizzlies are going to immediately throw him in there and they’re not going to slow things down because Zack Edy hasn’t played a regular season game to this point. you better get in there and you better get ready to play for one of the fastest uptempo uh teams in the NBA that prioritizes speed, they prioritize intensity. So, right now, Zack Edy getting ramped up for that. He is traveling with the team uh on this road trip. I want to point that out. That does not necessarily mean that he’s going to play, but I’ll point that out because of the fact that uh the Grizz is going to be on the road for for a little bit stretch here. And after a couple of after the first couple games, you know, after they played, you know, I believe in Cleveland. Uh so they’ll play New York, then they’ll go to Boston, then they’ll play Cleveland. After the game in Cleveland, they will return home before going to San Antonio uh for that next uh road game, even though it’s a four four road game slate on the road overall. But Zack Edy is going to be with the team. So uh they’re not going to have a lot of practice time. Again, it’s backtoback. They have a shootaround head of the game against the Knicks. you got a backtoback, they’re not going to practice the day after a backto-back and then you got the day after that where potentially they could practice and we could see, you know, how Zack Edy fares in that element. So, I still think we’re talking about a little bit of a ways away, but he is with the team. It’s not like he was he was left back here uh in Memphis. So, that is something that I wanted to point out as well. Coming up here next on Locked on Grizz, we got a preview the first game of that four game road trip. We got to preview a game against the New York Knicks. Make sure you stay tuned for that. But before we do that, today’s episode of Locked on Grizzlies is brought to you by none other than Game Time. Over at Robin Hood, the four and seven Memphis Grizzlies are now traveling to New York to play in the Garden Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks. Um, it’s going to be a tough one. There’s no way about no other way around it. this whole stretch of games right now that the Grizzlies are on. It’s it’s it’s just a bunch of tough opponents. You got to start here with the Knicks. Knicks are six and three this season and all six wins have come at home. They’re six and0 at home. They are 0 and3 on the road. And not only are they winning at home, they’ve won four consecutive games overall because they’re in the midst of I believe a sixgame home stand. All all four of their wins during this current win streak are by double digits. So, this is a team that’s playing really good basketball right now. Uh, they got a really good core. They’re getting decent production from the bench. You got Jordan Clarkson over there, Miles McBride, uh, really tripping in. Josh Hart is having a somewhat down year from where he’s been, uh, in recent years, but again, Jaylen Brunson, Ogana Nobi, Muel Bridges, Carl Anthony Towns averaging over 12 point averaging 12.7 rebounds per game right now. Mitchell Robinson when he’s in the lineup has been really effective. So with Mitchell Robinson, he’s the guy. He’s he’s a swing player for this team. This is a top rebounding team when he’s available and still a decent one when he’s not, but the Knicks are at the top of the food chain when it comes to rebounding when they have Mitchell Robinson and Carl Anthony Towns at the F. And Mitchell Robinson is questionable, you know, with an ankle injury to play against the Grizzlies. So we’ll see what happens there. But the Knicks number two in the NBA in offensive rating, number 11 overall in defensive rating. So they’re coached by Mike Brown now. So you don’t got to worry about the Tom Tivo minutes anymore. This is not a situation where no player on the Knicks is averaging above uh I believe 34 and a half minutes. None of them are at 35 minutes. So, it’s it’s not going to be a situation where we saw so many times uh when Taylor Jenkins and Tom Tibido used to go against each other and you’re looking at uh Tib starters and they’re at 38 39 minutes and the Grizzlies guys are at 32 31 minutes for the most part. But that’s neither here nor there. Uh this is going to be a tough game. Again, this is a good opportunity for the Grizzlies uh to to see where you are in terms of going against a team that doesn’t really have, you know, the greatest depth in the world, so to speak, but that starting lineup and its potential. They got some really they got some weapons over there. Uh they got some wing defenders that they’re going to throw at Jiren. They got some wing defenders that they’re going to throw, you know, at John Morant. So, you’re going to need those other guys to make shots. Jaylen Brunson, for example, um this is a game I want to see how much Cedric Coward plays because what we started to see early in the season, um you know, Cedric Coward was pretty much kind of, you know, more spot up quick stuff and they’re starting to if if you notice the last couple games, he’s gotten in some pick and roll ball handling situations a little bit uh more and more. But one thing that we’ve only seen far a few in between with Cedric Cow to this point is when teams guard him with those smaller point guards. He’ll post them up and and and you know put it back to the basket, use his strength, score over him or just turn around and shoot it over the top of him. This was something the Grizzlies said, you know, when they got him, this could be a swing uh thing for them. So when you got John Morant on the floor, this is the team that comes to mind for me because when John Moran Cedric Coward on the floor, this is the type of team where let’s say if Mitchell Robinson is out of the lineup, Carl Anthony Towns is more than likely going to be matched up against Jiren Jackson Jr. and uh you’ll you’ll have Muel Bridges or Oanai probably going against John Morant and maybe the other one like maybe Ojanna Nobi is matched up against Jiren Jackson Jr. and Muel Bridges guards John Mor. And in that situation, there is the possibility that you’re going to see Cedric Coward being guarded by someone like Miles McBride being guarded by someone like um you know uh these smaller guards that they have. Jaylen Brunson, another example, Jordan Clarkson. This is a game where you could put Cedric Coward in the post and say go feast young fella cuz that’s a strength of his. You you see him, you know, with the mid-range jumpers and things like that. He is very capable. He’s very efficient. Uh but look, not saying by any stretch this is going to be an easy game for the Memphis Christian. It’s going to be a tough game. This is going to be a game uh where you have to be the aggressive. You got to come out early. You got to be uh very aggressive in this game because this Knicks team is playing really good basketball. I want to see the internal improvement on the Grizzlies as well. Jaylen Wells showed signs of breaking out of his shooting slump, you know, uh recently. So, let’s see, you know, how that carries over. But Kavius Cwell Pope, it’s some 11 game sample size now. Need to see him shoot the basketball much better as well. How does Cam Spencer, John Kchar, and those guys fare against that New York Knicks bench? All big questions heading into this game. And then you got to turn around and do it again right after that against the Boston Celtics. So, this is a a tough stretch for the Grizzlies, but make sure you stay tuned with our coverage over at the Commercial Appeal. Uh I’m not on the trip, but we will have uh coverage around the clock of everything that’s going on with the Memphis Grizzlies on this road trip uh as they, you know, go the Eastern Conference way. They’re going to play the Cavs after they play those two teams. Then they’ll get back home for a day and then they’ll go out there and play the San Antonio Spurs. What are you thinking? What do you, you know, leave some comments, let us know like where can we improve the show, but also what do you think about the current state of the Grizzlies? I have my thoughts. I’m going to continue to give them on this show as well, and you will see, you know, where the team goes from here. This is a very crucial stretch where the Grizzlies are four- seven right now. We’ve seen the Grizzlies get off to slow starts before. I always allude to the fact that remember the 56 win season, the 56 win season, excuse me. Uh that team started off nine and 10. Now four and seven is a long way from nine and 10. You you got to really put some wins together to even get close to that. But uh we’ll see what happens. And that’s all it’s about at the end of the day. You play you play the game, you roll the ball out there. And uh the Grizzlies have a lot of the key players who are underperforming right now. John Morant, uh Jiren Jackson Jr. from a volume standpoint. um Jaylen Wells, Contavius Cowwell, Pope, all these guys, that’s four guys that’s in the starting lineup that you need more from. So, if you start to go in the other direction with those guys, things could really turn for the Grizzlies. But, that is a lot to ask. You’re asking four guys to step it up. In best case scenario, usually you get two guys to play better. So, we’ll see how it all plays out. But, thank you guys for tuning in. Locked on Grizzlies today. Remember that Locked on Grizzlies is free and available wherever you get your podcast. I’m the Michael Cole and we’ll see next time on Lock Dondris.

More, much more!
I'm fine with waiting for improvement in Ja's floater and midrange percentages. I don't need to see potential suicide missions to the rim.
You called it a slump I called it a straight up rebellion. If both Ja and Jaren not pulling in more points something definitely off…
This is great
Basically we have a choice.
Reckless/great Ja that gets hurt a lot…safer play every game sucks Ja
I think Ja can fix his shooting especially over the offseason but the eye test looks worrying.
Some of the shots Ja looked hesitant to take and his 3pt form was not consistent.
His FTs over the last couple of years indicate that he has too much talent to not figure it out but right now it's rough.
Just trade Ja already. As a season ticket holder…watching this guy move at half speed and look disinterested is maddening. F**k Ja, time to move on.
Ja doesn't love basketball and the only person keeping him from success is himself. He doesn't appreciate his opportunity in the NBA and wants to rest on his laurels. He will never br great because of his mindset and motor.
Ja is trying to play below the rim and he’s never done that. I know why he is but it’s taking him time to adjust
It's worse than concerning, its over. He was just as bad most of last season. This is who he is now.
Only people that are truly talented can stand in their own way to slow them down. I hope Ja finds his rhythm. I think he will. And the whole city gonna be screaming call 12 again. This offense just has to work out the kinks and get the injuries under control and who knows. We might see something great. Go Grizz
Let’s go and get a win tonight. Do the impossible. 😀😀😀
All summer, we heard Speed kill. Now i see Speed Kill because we aren't doing shit
Grizzlies win tonight button here
Ja help okc come back
Let's see it from the other teams POV. You got Ja and Jaren… then who else? Although your current roles players can be aggressive and take the good shots, they're just not falling in for them. You at least had to keep a modest guard on Bane and Kennard when they were on the floor. Your missing that depth that focuses around Ja, Scotty, and Ty keeping that ball moving within your starting lineup and/or bench. Ja said himself a few nights ago that he has to turn the ball over less and GM Zack Kleinman said that having this ball handling depth(you only got 1/3 of them right now) would be the difference maker. Cam and Vince aren't quite cutting it has handlers quite yet and their shot % has suffered a bit. Oh yeah, plus your paint defense and rebounding in Edey and Clarke is also out. Maybe you let GG cook for a few games and someone sits out for a moment? Beginning of the year and maybe the gears aren't all turning yet. Just don't fall too far behind in the standings. Half of your main rotation is not playing.
