Can we give Mitch Johnson some credit? Spurs are 8-2 and started 5-0 in the Play-In.
November 11, 2025
It’s wild seeing how many fans still want Mitch Johnson gone when the Spurs have one of the best records right now.

Actually instead of credit if we even lose one more game I say we make 20s posts calling for him to be fired

He has this year and maybe next secured before we need to seriously consider a change. I think he deserves that, not just in the spirit of giving him ample opportunities, but also he was hand-picked by Pop. Someone who knows a thing or two about almost pre-maturely getting canned before going on to be the winningest coach OAT. If Pop, BWright, and RC saw the vision enough to trust him, fans should give him the leeway of at least a full season and a half.
can’t believe how many people wanted to crucify him as a bad coach when he was thrust into the interim role with no prep last year that was also missing his 2 stars for half the season
All sports fan communities are crazy, but ours has been *très dramatique* the past few years.
How many fans “want him gone”? You’re just making stuff up
I love his temperament and attitude.
I also think we should give him the same patience we give Wemby in terms of growth and development.
This is *Pop’s chosen successor.*
If, In Pop We Trust, then, let us trust.
He’s been OK at best. The offensive sets are very unimaginative. He’s also failed to put Wemby in easier spots when he gets doubled or tripled. Also, rotations are out of whack.
Sweany’s defensive scheme on the other hand has been great. Sure we are still giving up open 3s but that will be cleaned up once pylons like Keldon, Julian and Barnes stop getting major minutes as the season goes on.
Maybe I’m just not in enough Reddit threads (which is prolly a good thing honestly), but who has wanted Mitch gone? This is his literal first full year with us and I have very little to complain about. We haven’t been fully healthy all year – although this is the closest we can be to it – and our front-court was held by sticks and glue. We were trucking out guys like Charles Bassey and Dominik Barlow 😂- – I also haven’t really noticed any egregious rotations either, so it’s not like Mitch doesn’t know how to manage his guys.
Like you said, we’re 8 – 2, good for 2nd in the west, behind the defending champs. We’re doing fine. Anything short of perfection has people up in arms apparently … people need to relax and let the boys do their thing 😅
We had one great game against Dallas and 9 where we had our ups and downs . We should give Mitch credit for this ups, but we cant forget about downs. Right now i cant say that Mitch is making Spurs better team, but we should give him more time to develop his ideas.
You gotta consider sweeney too (not sydney)
People here or just nba fans in general are very poor evaluators of coaching. None of the people criticising him actually understand any of the plays or whats happening. Everything is result oriented. Doesnt matter shooting luck or if any guys forgot their assignments. I really believe people criticising should atleast watch the post game interviews of him. Atleast you get some insight.
Just before the bulls game he addressed the concerns regarding stagnant offense during wemby’s post ups and according to him they arent supposed to look like that. I still remember after the Lakers game people were criticising him for that and in my mind i watch the game and there were so many plays where our guys werent executing the game plan but he never throws them under the bus. All he says is to have patience and the ofdense will come around and we need continuity.
The best in game example of this was i remember in the game against Lakers there was a possession where Sochan had the ball and wemby was out so he was looking to pass but all our guys were just standing looking around and it took like 10 secs off the clock because no one was open until Mitch screamed “CUT” which i even heard on the broadcast lol.
He deserves a lot of credit for managing this roster thus far. Last night, he was tinkering with the lineups (which is why the team dug itself into a hole), but he pulled the plug at just the right time. It would have been easy for him to shorten the rotation and the Spurs would have cruised to a double-digit win, but he also wanted to see how different combinations looked on the court at game speed.
That’s the thing I love about the organization. They don’t succumb to the “pressure” and “expectations” from the outside world. They’re not going to rush guys back from injury, they’re not going to limit what a player can do on the court, and they’re not going to make rash decisions for instant gratification.
The Spurs don’t hire for 2 or 3 years. They hire to build dynasties. In my opinion, he’s doing really well since it’s just his 1st full year of Coaching. Love him or hate him, he is here to stay!
Yeah the guy gets hate because he isn’t Pop but Pop won multiple titles and people were still wanting him fired and wanted Bob Hill back so it tracks with Spurs fans honestly.
Mitch is doing a great job. He did well with a young crew last season and will definitely show huge improvements with this team this year.
Im excited to see how far we will go this year and the progress in the years to come.
He looks like a sleepy Latin Elon Musk
He’s certainly done well in his first 10 official games, and he clearly has the respect of the team. But I do have a few observations on potential improvements as he continues to get his footing…I’d like to see him be more vocal (Pop-style) about the horrid officiating and no-calls on Castle and Wemby. Maybe even get a T or get tossed to make his point as it seems to be a recurring theme that will come back to bite us later if we don’t call it out.
Whoever is helping Mitch determine when to use the coach’s challenge, and when not to, is not doing him any favors either…
I don’t think he should be fired or anything but we are passing and doing much less ball movement than before and I think he could do better offensively. We are doing so much less cutting than we did last year and I don’t know why especially with so many downhill threats.
Who wants Mitch Johnson gone? lol
Hope he blocks put the noise bc right now I like what im seeing
If the players trust him, so am I
He deserves an immense amount of credit. I wasn’t expecting such a great start to the season. He’s done about as good of a job as you can expect from a new head coach.
I was already fine with him replacing Pop, but that quote about “embracing the mundane” washed away any of my worries. I’m sure Mitch will have his own share of struggles and will be out-coached in many the future, but I’m confident he will learn and grow and become a good coach going forward.
I dont think mitch should be fired as long as were winning games i just dont know why the gameplan is heavily reliant on not having our 8 foot tall monster in the paint more often. But its early & i expect(or hope) that he figures out a way to make it happen & we start blowing these games wide open.
Winning 35ish games without any prep without any of your own staff thrown in the middle of the season… Wemby missing half the season is honestly impressive. It was his job to lose.
Mitch Johnson has done a good job, including under very difficult circumstances last year.
Too many people here think being a good coach means that you never lose and never make mistakes in hindsight. Just like players, coaches need experience and can improve with time, too.
A coach is not an all-knowing oracle who gets everything right about basketball at all times.
I hope Mitch can keep it up and prove that he’s the guy long term. Stability has been a huge positive in this organization.
