Martin is 24, and a fringe pitching prospect. He was a 14th round draft pick in 2023 out of University of Kentucky. He’s most recently been pitching in the Arizona Fall League.

It’s good that the Giants got someone back after deciding to clear 40-man roster space and give up Black.

This is unlikely to be an important trade in any way, but it’s the off season so any news is interesting to me right now.

  1. This was the Fangraphs writeup on Martin from last season:

*”Martin was a 2023 12th rounder out of Kentucky who is currently in the High-A rotation. He has a gorgeous delivery and a build in the Jason Marquis mold. His fastball sits 92-96, he has a 45-grade slider, and it’s possible his changeup will take a late leap because his arm action is so slick.”* ([Source](https://blogs.fangraphs.com/kansas-city-royals-top-35-prospects/))

He had a 46% swing-and-miss rate on his cutter in the Arizona Fall League, along with a 30% chase rate.

  2. Def a ‘We claimed him but want to ensure we get him instead of another team claiming him’ move, don’t think too hard about the return, Black was gone regardless, just a lil kickback to ensure KC gets him

  3. At this point, Tidwell is the only decent starting pitcher that could break through from the minors who the Giants haven’t tested yet.

Even the AA and A+ starters from last year are pretty weak.
