REVEALED: The Dallas Stars are Living in the DANGER ZONE – Can the Offense SUSTAIN it?

The Dallas Stars may not be lighting up the shot counter every night, but they are turning fewer chances into higher quality ones. So, what is the balance between patience and precision? Let’s break down how the Stars are making the most out of their offensive chances, but a little more would it hurt. The Dallas Stars offense has been up and down to begin this season. We know they’ve heavily relied on their power play, which is scorching hot. The five on five play is trending in the right direction, but we could certainly use a bit more. However, the stars are actually getting a lot of high quality looks. I’ll tell you more about that in just a moment. But we’re going to preview the Ottawa Senators as well on today’s show and discuss Daryl the Razer Way being inducted into the Hall of Fame before we kick you off into the rest of your day. As always, thank you so much for love and support on each and every episode. Please subscribe, hit that notification bell, never miss an episode. So, the the reason for me wanting to to do this segment on today’s show is because I I came across the NHL edge statistics, which you can find on NHL.com. And to be honest, I don’t think I’ve actually ever clicked on the NHL edge statistics, but I did for whatever reason this time. And there was some really intriguing stuff in here, and I wanted to share some of that with you. But first, I want to go to a quote from Glen Goldton following the Seattle game uh about how the the Stars are playing these lowscoring, pretty intense games and where he feels the Stars are going and I want to use some of these numbers to to maybe back some of it up and uh why I think you can be um encouraged about where the Stars are heading at this point. So, first up, here’s Goldson on this playoff type of atmosphere or at least games uh they’ve been playing recently. I like um I like some of the things we’re doing just in the last few games like our forch check and uh you know, some of the way our D are keeping pucks alive in the ozone and some of our physicality and holding pucks. Our ozone time has has creeped up a little bit here. I So, um I like what we’re doing. Um and yeah, you’re always building or rehearsing for the big dance, right? So, um, any of these playoff type the more playoff type games you you play, the the more growth you get from your team, and that’s what we’re trying to do. So, it’s well documented the the stars have struggled at five on five to begin this season, and I think there’s multiple factors to that. Of course, the injuries, the line shuffling, but over the last couple of games, it looks like Golitin has found some chemistry with whether that’s Rantin and Johnston, whether that’s Hint and Robo, even the bottom six with Ritzcobian, Bourke, and Beck, we’re starting to find a rhythm. at least seems like there is a bit of a groove the Stars are falling in which is a good sign. But you look at their their five on five numbers and this is via natural static first then we’ll get to the NHL edge. But you look at the five on five numbers. This is natural static. They’re being outshot 292 to 331. They are being outchanced 289 to 327. That has to improve. That is the analytics not backing up the Stars record I feel like uh at this point in the season. But I’ve mentioned the Stars are not going to play pretty hockey with all the injuries because they’re missing two three big centerpieces of their lineup. So, I I think it’s it’s a real tough ask for for them to just dominate teams for long stretches uh of of a game uh more than 30 minutes. Really, it feels like that’s a tough ask. Obviously, the power play’s been great. But here here is where uh it it kind of intrigued me. It was a bit of an eyeoper for me when you look at some of the stars chances and where they’re getting some of their looks. So I came on NHL edge and the stars are averaging are not averaging. They have a 411 total shots. So that is 25th in the NHL. The average is 442. And this goes back to the point I kind of made in the open. Why they still need to increase their quantity of production in all situations. Power plays amazing, but five on five, even strength especially, they need to increase that production because they’re about middle of the pack. and they are about middle of the pack in terms of goals this year. They have 47. That’s 16th in the NHL. But then you go to the shot locations and NHL edge shows all the different zones sort of like you’ve maybe seen on a basketball court where they show the three-point shots and your field goal percentage. Very similar here, but it shows the shot on goal totals. So the Stars are ranked number two in the NHL and high danger chances. So that’s pretty much the slot area, right? 135 kind of in the middle slot. Uh not on the crease. I would say kind of the probably a 4 foot diameter around the the net front. The Stars ranked number two in the NHL. 148 high danger shots. So they are getting a lot of good looks in front of opposing net minders. Um they rank uh about top half of the league and sort of the high slot area. Uh but the further you get out uh they rank uh a little less. um and not very good, which I don’t think is too surprising. Um if they’re getting a lot of their looks in front of the net, I think that’s a good thing. They are creating a lot more looks in tight. Um and they rank one of the best teams. The only team that’s better is the Penguins, and they’ve been off to a great start. Now, the team’s shooting percentage isn’t all that great. Um it’s pretty decent, 11%. Uh that’s 14th in the NHL. And this was without a guy like Robertson scoring who can’t buy a goal right now, but he’s getting a lot of tasty looks. He’s gotten a lot of looks in this zone where NHL edge shows just right on kind of top of that crease. He just hasn’t been able to bury u their mid-range, their bottom half of the league, uh their long range bottom half. Um I think that would come up if they had more looks. That’s where the quantity comes into play. But they are producing a lot of shots in some of the dangerous areas which is a a great sign. And you look at their high danger chances at five on five so far this season. They have 130 against 126. So they are producing more high danger chances. They’re out high dangering chance their opponents. Um but you look at the overall numbers, it’s not quite there. Um and you could of course kind of look at this two ways. It’s great they’re doing that, but can you sustain that? Can can that be sustained for the rest of the year? Can that increase? Were there will the quantity get better when you get some guys back? Or is maybe that too naive to to think uh Duchain coming back in a bin will just really totally change the whole function of this team? Uh, I I I tend to more lean on the positive side that it will help. I don’t know if it’s completely going to change the trajectory. I think that would be a bit naive to think this team’s just going to rock it up the the ranks offensively. Um, you know, they’re averaging 2.94 goals per game. That’s 18th. Um, you know, I think Duchain certainly uh would help increase that. I don’t know how much Ben in a lot of ways would would factor into some of that, but I I do think there is something to be said that the starters are creating a lot of high quality looks and if they continue to do that, they’re going to be in fine shape. They they do need to continue to trend in the right direction, play more full 60-minute hockey games, but Seattle, Nashville, we saw first periods where they were really on top of it. Um, and as Goldson said, I think the fortech has been better. They’re starting to to keep some more time in the offensive zone. Um, the zone time percentage for the Stars is 40.8%. Um, the NHL average is 41. So, the Stars rank 19th in offensive zone time. So, that’s not great. Um, they’re kind of average. Um, they’re actually below average in in all the zone times. Uh, whether it’s neutral zone or defensive zone, um, they’re they’re either average or below in a lot of those numbers, but he he mentioned their their ozone time is starting to creep up. Um, and I think we’ve seen that that first period against Seattle, they were so connected, crisp passing, and they were creating some chances. uh off of that and of course it led to a goal and uh and a power play goal in the game as well. But I ran across that and I thought that was very very interesting um just to to look at sort of the Stars numbers where they rank and uh how maybe they’re they’re they’re getting better um and they’re going the right direction and uh why maybe they’re not producing a ton. They are getting some of those high quality looks. Um, but of course if you don’t bury your looks and you maybe find yourself on the wrong end of some results and you know we we’ve seen that a bit. So I think there’s there’s sort of pros and cons to to all of it. But um that was intriguing. Uh before we get into uh Ottawa, I I did want to play a clip uh from Gitson on some updates to Matt Duchain and Jamie Benn who is making the trip to Canada and uh then we’ll preview the Ottawa Senters as well. So we’ll do that in just a moment. Today’s episode of Locked On Stars is brought to you by FanDuel. Hey, Locked On Stars listeners, we want to give you a big thank you from the Locked On Network, now the number one sports podcast network. Thank you for making this show your first lesson of the day. And uh we’re we’re very proud of that as a as a network for uh being uh I guess given that title uh giving that achievement and uh we’re continuing to to hope to grow that and it’s for all of you out there um that that listen um every single day whether it’s my show or some of the other uh locked on Dallas Stars podcast or or Dallas sports I should say uh it’s Mavs you name it Cowboys Rangers uh we really really do uh appreciate that. So, a big thank you um from us here at the Lockdown Podcast Network. Now, uh a quick update from Goalie on Stars injuries, of course, due to Shane, which I have some worries about and Jamie Ben as well. Uh I don’t think Dutch will be on the trip. Uh Jamie will be on the trip skating with us. So, um you know, that’s a good sign. Say, how important is that? Because we heard he couldn’t fly. Fly is a good thing. Yeah. No, he’s he’s passed that. So, um it’s a good thing now. It’s time for him to start uh getting them back into skating with our guys. So, uh, timeline is still a timeline, but at least he’s with us, and it’s important to have him on the road. I’m sure he’s going to enjoy it. So, great news that that Jamie Ben is going on on the road for a couple reasons. It’s good to have him back. Also, I think that’s going to help the morale a bit. It it would maybe help his recovery process. I know that’s weird, but when you have the support, when you’re you’re around the boys, I I think that could could help keep him motivated to to get back. um maybe a bit quicker if if uh if if allowed um if he passes, but um I think it’s great just to to have the captain there, right? Just that that leadership role, having him around on the road is is never a bad thing. And now Duchain worries me a bit because I I I said this maybe a week even two weeks ago. The effects of that hit may not be physical. Uh it could be well maybe it is in some way like if if it just kind of rattled him. And I I know he was never in concussion protocol from what we understand, but feels like potentially it has to do with the head. Maybe it’s not a concussion, but there is obviously something holding him back. And and that maybe that’s like it almost maybe is more scary than like a collapsed lung. As as weird as that may sound, but I think you understand the point. Like head injuries can just be obviously funky. It’s scary and not good. And again, maybe they’re just taking it easy with him and and I hope everything is okay. But it’s a weird situation since he played the very next game after he took that hit against Minnesota. He played the next game in St. Louis and then we haven’t seen him since. So I I I don’t know what occurred where he felt that he was good enough to go the next game. Um, but obviously he did and I’m sure the stars doctors, whoever they have checking on him, uh, gave him the go-ahad. I’m not saying it it was, uh, a bad, uh, a bad look or anything. U, but it is it is just a bit crazy since he did play the next game. But it it worries me now because, you know, he’s older. look um takes you longer as you age to get back from injuries. Uh just just the the wear and tear on your body. Um and you they all break down at some point. So it is it is a big concern for me about about when he’s going to come back. It’s because it’s just it’s sort of vague. Um he’s not going to be on the trip. Um I I just I hope it’s more cautionary than anything. And I hope it’s uh not more than um more than we initially expected, right? But it does really worry me just because another reason is the stars are very closely tight, which I I get it’s it’s health. Um I understand it, but we saw I I feel like we saw that with Lungquist last year. Um we didn’t hear anything and then boom, he’s out for the year. We saw that with Hakenpawa a couple years ago when he was out in February and we were told, okay, you know, he’s he’s close to coming back. He’s like he was dayto day and he and then we learned he got he was like done. So worries me that like we may not see him for a large chunk of time. Uh and and like we’re we’re waiting to hear the worst um type of thing. Um I hate to to kind of go down that route, but it gets me it gets me kind of thinking about that. Um, I don’t want to speculate anything more. Um, but he’s not on the trip. Um, and uh, of course, wish him well wishes and I hope he’s he’s back soon because look, man, Dutch is I think a big not I think he is a big big part um, of this lineup and um, Stars could use him back. So, I hope uh that is the case. Now, let’s um, transition over to tonight’s contest. Stars taking a little Canadian swing. They got Ottawa tonight in the uh the nation’s capital. Senators 8, five, and three to begin the season. They are number what are they? Number three. Number three in the Atlantic division. Was trying to find their their standings with 19 points coming off a 4-2 win uh against Utah. Sarge Ottawa pretty similar schedules here of late. Um they just played sort of three out of four. And the Senators won their backto-back. to beat Philly in overtime and then Utah is off to a great start. Uh both teams have the same record in the last 10, 61 and three. Uh Ottawa is having a rough time getting good goalending. Uh Lenus Olark does not have great numbers. He’s allowed a league high 43 goals. Does have a 643 record. Um 866 save percentage, 3.24 goals again. So, not shining. Their backup uh Levi Merlinan uh is is also not off to a phenomenal start, but their offense has carried them to some wins. Uh they average 3.44 goals per game. That is sixth in the NHL. And um their their offense can can pull them out of some hairy situations because they give up a lot too. They rank 30th. So, they are pretty bipolar. If Dallas keeps Ottawa to two goals, I think they win this game easily. That that’s that’s the key tonight. Keep Ottawa to two. Uh their PK’s awful. Uh it’s last in the league. 67% power play’s good. It’s eight, right? They they they’re just pretty much kind of opposite of of each other in a lot of ways. Um sort of their their defensive and offensive game. They’re great on the dots, however. Uh they’re first in the NHL, 58.9%. So, uh, they’re winning a lot of draws. Uh, leading the way there, uh, is Claude Giru, Stutzel. Stutzel, they have some good veterans. They are without Brady Kachchuck. Um, he underwent surgery. Uh, for those of you, uh, maybe did not know. Uh, he he’s in surgery. U sort of Philly vibes with this team, like young Tal or Anaheim, I should say. Young talented forwards. Bather, Stutsla, uh, Pento, Cousins, like they are deep down the middle. And, and Jaru still effective, still effective at his age. Sort of Duchy in that way. You know, Daru’s 38. Um, Dutchie’s three years younger, which is u almost a bit preposterous, but um, uh, this is a a young, talented team. They have young defenseman that love to jump up in the play. Uh, guys like Tyler Cleven, that’s a North Dakota guy. Uh they have another guy um on the back end, Sanderson, uh North Dakota guy has 11 points in 16 games. He’s their their power play quarterback. He’ll make you pay. Um he is very very slippery. Um so it’ll be uh I think it’ll be a really really fun contest. Um you know, Goldson mentioned he thought that that his team looked a bit sluggish, like they were maybe a bit fatigued um to in that Seattle game. Um, I I think that sort of showed in the second period with the long change and whatnot. So, it’s a lot of hockey here. Uh, but Stars are coming with a day off, which is good. And, uh, hopefully they have the legs tonight. Um, and and they’ll need it um against this this Ottawa side. But, uh, those are, um, some things to to look at here coming into tonight. Um, if the Stars hold to two, I think it’s I think it’s a win for Dallas. Um, easier said than done and I guess you could say that about a lot of teams but especially Ottawa who um has given up their uh fair share of goals. Um five on five though their expected goals percentage top 10 in the NHL. So they can create um that’s for sure. Um it’s it’s the other side of the puck that you have to make them pay on. And if I think they get starts like they had against Seattle and Nashville, maybe put it away um early potentially or at least get up um and get out on top and uh and look uh and look comfortable the rest of the way. Although that seems impossible for for the Stars to do. Uh they’ve been a bit backwards. Seems like when they’re playing well, they’re losing. When they’re playing bad, sometimes they’re winning. Um it’s the the beauty of the game. That’s that’s why we all love it. Uh but uh yeah, that’s uh something to look at for tonight. Stars and Sins uh victory plus and it is a 6:00 puck drop. So an hour earlier tonight um and then they uh finish up um in Montreal on Thursday, which should be a good one. All righty. We have to talk about Daryl the Razer Ray, however, being inducted in the Hall of Fame um tonight as I’m recording this on a Monday. Um and just just maybe share some of our our favorite stories uh about Razer. We’ll do that in just a moment. Today’s episode of Lockdown Stars is brought to you by Drip Drop. Um and the ceremony is tonight here on a Monday, but um he is being honored with the Foster Huitt Memorial Award. Um it is given to the broadcaster every year that highlights an exceptional career and Ray definitely qualifies for the award. Um there is a wonderful article on dowstars.com. I’m not going to read through everything, but it goes through sort of um his career. Um, and there’s some quotes from Ken Hitchcock and and Jim Lights in there uh about uh how it was the best hire he has uh ever made. And um it it is really really welld deserved. Um he has been I think the the voice of of stars hockey for so many. Um, we all grow up, at least my generation, and even before me, like like grew up with with Daryl the Razor Ray and whether it was Ralph Stranges, Straighter, Lewig, like you know it now, now Bogar Rod. Uh, they’ve all had, I think, an effect on us. uh they’ve all been in our corner um as as as Stars fans and have been on this this journey um every single year of of what the hockey season is. And it’s a roller coaster and they’re with us every step of the way. And uh I wouldn’t be surprised. I’ve I’ve probably heard more of Josh um and Razer than I have heard my own parents’ voice over the last couple of years just with the amount of games you uh you you watch and whatnot. I if that’s sad uh maybe it is, but I I think you you understand where I’m getting at. We almost spend as much time with them um as just as our as dieh hard stars fans, right? We listen to every single night um and we consume a lot of it. But man, he’s um he’s as good as they come. Uh and it’s it’s really really awesome that he’s being, you know, honored um in this way. It’s crazy to think that um he’s going in the into the Hall of Fame, but um certainly deserves it. Uh and we all know the vocab and the and the razorisms. Uh, I I’d like to think I as a play-by-play guy have sort of a mixed bag of of him um and others I’ve listened to, whether that’s Strangest and Bogar Rod now, right? As well, I feel like I’m a mix of both of them and I try to add that flavor of Razer um into my calls uh because he makes it fun. I will say that I don’t think anybody has as much fun as him probably um in the booth. Um when he does this when he chuckles or he you know he throws out something we’re like what? Um and I think that’s the most important thing like he loves it. Um and there’s great stuff in this article from Mike Hik about his preparation um and and what he brings to the table. Um and boy he he u he’s an entertainer, right? Like he’s he’s entertainment. Um I think we can can all learn from that um in a lot of ways and uh I just I think it’s um it’s incredible that he’s um he is being bestowed this honor and um he did say if you want to say anything about me say that I’m fortunate. He concluded when asked about his brain and his skills and his drive that make him a true unicorn. And he said because I truly believe that’s actually what I am. I don’t think um he could put it any better. uh pretty much uh sums up uh Razer, but um yeah, congratulations to him. Did want to to show him uh some some love and uh man, he he’s he’s just been a staple of Stars hockey um since 1996. And we are certainly spoiled here as Stars fans that we’ve had guys like Josh and Dave, Ralph, right, like year after year after year. Um like I I think we’re sport in general just uh the broadcasters we have in the DFW Metroplex. Um you just go around through all the sports like there’s just some some great great playbyplay broadcasters, color, you name it. Like they’re just all great. Um and they really do have a huge huge effect on I think what we feel, what we you know what we think. Um and it’s um it’s cool. Um that’s he’s he’s being recognized like that’s a big big freaking deal I feel like. So um and you know I think I he’s had a big impact on on me and you know sort of how like I’ve kind of you know gone about the the way I deliver a broadcast and and and whatnot on a on a nightly basis. I I think I’d be a fool to say he hasn’t had an influence on me. He 100% has. Um and um I think that’s a good I hope it is as I as I try to, you know, kind of mix in uh my own style um and whatnot. But uh yeah, congratulations Razer in the Hall of Fame, baby. Yes, Stars are going to do it on the ice and off. Uh so can’t we can’t wait to uh to to watch the ceremony tonight a bit. Um and um and then hear him on a Stars broadcast. Uh I think I think he’ll be back in the booth here tonight for Ottawa when this was out. So I I believe that was when he was planned um to return. Although Brett Sever, he he filled in admirably uh over the last couple of games. So, shout out to him. I I thought he did an excellent job. Um big big shoes to fill. I’m I’m sure he was told uh by by Razer himself over the last couple of games. That’s going to do it for today’s show. Thank you as always. 1. I hate that we fans can't get the truth. If Benn had a simple pneumotharax (air in pulmonary space), he would need a tube for a few days and should have been playing less than a week later. And Dutchy's injury has never been reported. I understand why they do it, but it is AWFUL and UNFAIR to the fans.
