The Angels had NO BUSINESS doing this.

Jeff Fletcher wrote a story in the Orange County Register about Lucas Gilito not working out for the Angels a couple seasons ago when they acquired him and they brought up his divorce as reasoning. The Angels believe part of what went wrong with Gilo then was that he had started divorce proceedings right before the trade unbeknownst to the Angels when they made the deal and he was distracted. Absolute shot fired. You can still pitch despite going through a divorce proceeding. It was public information before they acquired him. He probably had a messed up elbow since he underwent Tommy John surgery soon after that. People forget when we talk about players, they’re humans. Like everybody thinks like this mercenary just came in to pitch for their team and it didn’t go well for whoever said this. Screw you because what he’s going through in his personal life could affect what’s going on on the field. Whether it’s been out there, whether anybody knows it or not, all that stuff, you don’t need to bring that up. Not publicly. Maybe, hey, you know what? We’re going through this. We’re talking about this internally. Hey, this person’s going through it. Maybe that goes into your discussion internally. Don’t ever bring it up in the public. But the other thing is, didn’t they trade for him and then they shipped him to Cleveland right after? And he only had a few starts with the Angels. This goes back to our point we always talk about on here. Players aren’t robots. Things happen off the field. Now listen, I played with dudes that were going through it and they played better. And then I played dudes with the smallest, littlest, tiniest thing. To most people, they would like sit in a corner and crawl up in a ball because they couldn’t handle it. It’s different personalities. That’s why scouting is important, makeup for guys is important, and trying to figure that out. But to say, “Oh, he didn’t pitch good in his three or four starts because he was going through a divorce, which was public at that time.” This is just bad. It’s just bad.
