Ben Johnson: Plan is still for Bears CBs Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon to return this season

  1. Imagine our D at full strength right as our O is hitting a new stride. Man, we’ll be scary.

  2. Look, I’m not saying anything is promised. We could absolutely crash and burn to an ugly end of the season. It’s plausible.

But there’s also a very plausible path for this season to get *real* interesting.

“Huge takeoff in the second half of their second year” is a surprisingly common path for great QBs to take, and Williams the last few games is off to a good start on trying to match that.

Every week we get more team experience in the offensive scheme, and some talented rookies in Loveland and Burden are starting to see their playing time increase.

The time off seems to have temporarily humbled CJGJ and I think we can get a half-season of good use out of him. Booker coming back from injury has been a surprising little pick-me-up, he’s been better at DE than either Odeyingbo or Turner were.

And we might be getting our best player back in Johnson, plus Gordon too. This defense is *very* different with Jaylon Johnson out there neutralizing top WRs.

The schedule doesn’t look as scary as it did when it came out. JJ McCarthy has proven immune to KOC’s QB whispering so far. The Packers offense is beat to hell with injuries, so is the 49ers defense. The Steelers are ok but not terrifying, the standard is the standard.

The only “oh fuck, I have no idea how we win those” games left on the schedule are the Lions (who might have nothing to play for when we play them) and the Eagles.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if we end up being this years’ version of the 2024 Commanders. 11 or 12 wins and some noise in the playoffs.

  3. I never even questioned if gordon could be out for the season i just assumed he’d b back in like 2 weeks rip

  4. If I had to guess.

    – this week, no one else back vs Vikings
    – next week Edwards and Drob back vs Steelers
    – no change on a short week Friday vs eagles
    – during the long break we get Gordon back vs Packers
    – Jaylon comes back mid December for final 4 games vs browns, GB, SF and Detroit

  5. I’m being a fan and I don’t care. There is a world where more Burden + Loveland usage unlocks the next level for this offense and the defense becomes average if not above with our secondary coming back and Booker continuing to build strong performances. Is it likely, probably not but there is a world where this team can compete for and in the playoffs

  6. Plan is to kick ass this season. THIS season and every season, despite what some losers try to say (‘n0t Ab0Ut Th1S s3As0N dUrrrrr’)

  7. Without a pass rush this still won’t be a great defense. However, not having blown cover on every play will obviously be beneficial and make it at least easier for pass rush to get a little more time to get to the QB.

  8. Both are frustrating but seems like Jaylon got rushed back. Just don’t make the same mistake twice with either player.
