Rich Eisen Debates an Upset Steelers’ Fan about Mike Tomlin’s Future in Pittsburgh

I I have a serious question for you, Richie. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve spoken to you. Okay. Do you still think Tomlin should be our head coach? Why you looking at me like that, Chris? Why you looking at me? I’m just, you know, awaiting your response. Chris knows. What does he know, Michael? He knows. What does he know? Um, I know what you know. I I I let’s put it this way. I think he’s a Hall of Fame head coach. I think he is remarkable at plugging into the athlete. I think he is remarkable at um taking the passion for football and instilling it in a team. Um and I think that if this falls apart, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Steelers finally say, “Let’s figure something out.” and then Tomlin shows up somewhere else like the Giants. And let me ask you if I may, the Giants wouldn’t be a a bad spot. Uh I I think Tomlin is 100% going to be a coach in this league for as long as he wants to be, but I totally understand that Steeler fans are like, we we’re we’re done. We’re done with seeing something that has flashes of excellence in the regular season only to Wayne prior to the playoffs. This Wayne is now the middle of the season. But we are still, let’s be honest, eight days removed. One week ago, we were talking about how the Steelers looked terrific and the Colts uh maybe they turn him back into a pumpkin and the reverse happened. And I’m telling you, last night was a home game. Last night was 100% a home game for the Steelers and they just blew it. And but you got to you got to tip the to the Chargers though. But we’re the Steelers have become the retirement home. Wilson last year, Aaron Rodgers this year. I mean, if we can get them, you know, to stop burning the incense out there and maybe come alive a little bit, we we we might have something every throw. And again, I get it. It was just last night and he’s done some good things, but come on. I I mean, do we not have Will Howard on our team? Oh, well, he was hurt. No, you’re not turning to Will Howard, nor Mason Rudolph, which was brought up by Chris. uh I’m assuming tongue a little bit in cheek because it was an overreaction Monday subject matter on our podcast and sure thanks for the call Michael it’s just it’s it’s Rogers like that’s what the Jets did for two two years it’s it’s Rogers is you you put your eggs in that basket which is why I would have gone ahead and gotten another receiver in the trade deadline tech with the fourth fifth or sixth round draft choice let’s go I mean let’s go they they they’re clearly missing a gear on offense I don’t know why he can’t connect with DK Metaf in the same way that, you know, he did uh on occasion with with Garrett Wilson. I I don’t know why that is. I have I have no idea, but something just isn’t working. It’s not clicking. A little bit off is what Rogers called himself on Sunday night. And the next final eight games are a measuring stick, as they should be. It is the National Football League. The good news is you’re going to finish up your series with Cincinnati prior to Joe Burrow returning, which our friend Jay Glazer just tweeted out from Fox that he is expecting Joe Burrow’s 21-day window that just opened in the early parts of this hour. um for him to return from it, which means in the next 3 weeks you’re going to see Joe Burrow and that might be a week 13 Cincinnati date against San Francisco uh pardon me against Baltimore on that Thanksgiving night by the way. You think and and NBC’s uh rooting for that one on Thanksgiving night that Burrow returns on Thanksgiving night just in time to potentially save that season again if their season is savable. And then after that, you send Rogers to Chicago and hope that he finds that magic there again, which wouldn’t be surprised if he did. Home against Buffalo, which at this point in time could be hit or miss on which Bills team shows up. Is it the one that beat the Chiefs, the one that smoked the Carolina Panthers, or the ones that just got beat in Miami, similar to the way that they got beat in Atlanta? Which one is that going to show up? And then you do have a Monday night home date against Miami where I imagine Mike McDaniels will look as cold as they always do whenever they’re on the road at Detroit before two home dates. Let’s go. I mean, you’re not making a change. You’re not going to um Mason Rudolph or or Will Howard. It just isn’t it. You’ve got a you’ve got a guy neckup who’s one of the best ever. And if physically he can do the stuff like he did against Cincinnati in Cincinnati to win that game or against the Colts to win that help win that game on the defensive side finally catching up to what the offense was doing with Rogers then then you can win more games. This might be a little bit knee-jerk but it does look like the Ravens are coming to try and take him straight out. And if the Ravens go from one and five to beat a team that went from four- one to whatever they are, maybe it is time for the Steelers to sit down with Tomlin and say, “Where do you want to go?” Cuz uh we’ll let you set that up. Certainly, if the Giants are raising their hand saying, “We’ll take you Mike Tomlin, you can coach up that defense and let’s find the offensive coordinator for Dart.” Just as an example.   2. Tomlin has settled for mediocrity and it's become a joke. The team is going to be stuck at that Wildcard status unless there's a major shakeup. They are too good to get decent draft capital yet not good enough to have star players or make a run.

  6. May I ask why Tomlin is a hall of fame candidate, let alone an apparent lock? I’m not just talking about not winning a playoff game for nearly 8 seasons. He won one Super Bowl with the team Bill Cowher built. He has a postseason record of 8-11, and all but one win was from Cowher’s team. All his success as a head coach came in the first two seasons after Cowher. Some people want to point out his regular season record and the fact he has never coached a losing season. Yet both of these – though impressive – are more of function of longevity than coaching prowess. Rooney is well known to be traditional when it comes to coaches, and doesn’t fire coaches quickly. You can pile up a seemingly impressive amount of wins when the owner is reticent to fire coaches and accepts mediocrity.

    Tomlin hasn’t seen success with teams he built and coached. He hasn’t groomed star players, he isn’t knocking the draft out of the park. He’s not elevating the Steelers. If you’re going to argue that Tomlin is a HoF lock, what besides getting way too many seasons to collect 9-11 wins are you basing it on?

  7. Trade Magic Mike (and Arthur Smith plus Terrell Austin) to the Jets for their first rounder. It's enough!
    I'm so sick of Dumblin and his meaningless word salads. And the same movie we watch for 10 years now.

  8. at this point the steelers do not need a player's coach,, it's not working if this is the new steeler's standard then they've set the bar to just being better than the worse teams in the N.F.L. change the chef change the meal, it'll be better just to start the rebuild with a different coaching staff!, if we lose we lose,, maybe get better draft picks., teams dont play just to be mediocre they play to get to that superbowl now we're starting to miss f.g's ., wtf?18 years only one superbowl they cant or wont make in-game adjustments to save their lives

  14. If not for Rodgers the Steelers might not even have one win. It's Rodgers experience and talent thats moving the ball. Arthur Smiths offense sucks. If you would put in Trubisky-Pickett-Wilson-Fields-Howard-Rudolph in this same offense they'd be lucky to have 1 win.

  15. As a Life-Long Steelers Fan ,, If Bill Belichick can WIN 6 Super-Bowl's 🏆 with ( New England ) 🤔 and still be FIRED,, Why can't TOMLIN be Fired ,, ANDY REID was a good Coach for the EAGLE'S,, But didn't hit that NEXT-LEVEL until he gat to K.C. 🤔 I'd like to see ( JON GRUDEN ) in Pittsburgh

  19. Steelers absolutely need to get a young QB and actually let him play!!! They also need to stop overpaying these veterans. The OLINE is NOT getting better! This is why Rodgers looks scared in the pocket. He has NO time to make the 2nd/3rd read.

  21. If Mike Tomlin can't win with Russel Wilson and Aaron Rodgers, TJ Watt. Cam Heyward he isn't winning. Let home go ruin careers elsewhere

  24. Steelers fans are so spoiled. Tomlin is too good of a coach that’s the problem. He is amazing at getting results from sub-par rosters, the man hasn’t had a losing season. He just hasn’t had the ability to win in the playoffs with these squads. Any team would be lucky to have Tomlin as a coach. He’s top tier.

  25. Tomlin is a great guy, and could probably still have some success, I just think he needs a a change of scenery to find it. Steeler nation is ready to suffer through an actual rebuild, not simply suffering through status quo. Happy to have lived through Tomlins HOF career with the Stillers, but I'm ready to see a ground up rebuild for success down the road.

  27. It's ok you guys can say it. He's black hes's not going anywhere until he wants to go! The owners are to liberal they introduced the Rooney Rule. Not a chance they release or trade him.

Cowher won playoff games and AFCCGs with QBs the likes of Neil O'Donnell, Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox and most of his tenure was competitive and lost lots of championship games at home which was his knock until he drafted Big Ben. Tomlin meanwhile had his most success with the key players and assistant coaches that Cowher left behind and after they faded Tomlin has been at best mediocre. Also does the bamboozled national media not realize that he's not won a playoff game in damn near a decade which is the longest streak for the Steelers since before 1969. Thats before Chuck Noll and the Steel Curtain. Like really??? You're telling me that the once proud and mighty Pittsburgh Steelers are satisfied with this because they're sticking to this played out notion of stability of not firing a head coach. This is the same guy who allowed Matt Canada to poison the offense for too long. Ain't no way he survives like this at a Power 5 college football program if guys like Brian Kelly at LSU gets shown the door because they refuse to accept mediocrity like the Steelers have.

  34. He is a terrible coach. He had a winning team left to him by Bill Cowher. Tomlin rode that wave until all those players were gone. After that, no matter that he had great players on the team, he could not MANAGE to get to the playoffs, or win any playoff games, and no more titles. Stop defending this DEI hire by the Rooneys. He needs to go set a bad STANDARD for some other team.

  36. I've been a steelers fan my entire life. The 70s were fantastic. They held onto Chuck too long, Bill came to town and made a solid team and won SB. Got out too soon. Tomlin took over a stacked team. Being a players coach, has let both running backs and receivers become divas, then he gets rid of them. No one wants to play for him. He doesn't motivate anyone. Every year the oc gets the blame. Who picked them? The defense hasn't been able to stop passing teams in 10 years. Which is exactly how many years I wanted Tomlin fired. It's way past time. Racism can't be accused if you keep a guy who hasn't produced for over 10 years
