REPORT: Edwin Diaz NEWS | New York Mets | Mets Free Agent Rumors | Mets Hot Stove | MLB Hot Stove
What’s up Mets fans? Welcome back to the channel. As the baseball off season has kicked off and the GM meetings are happening in Las Vegas as we speak. We had a lot to hear from David Sterns at the GM meetings. He did speak a lot but spoke very little of what his plan is going forward throughout the offseason. He talked about the young kids. He talked about players already on the team being better. And he also talked about free agents, current future Mets, possibly current Mets remaining on the team. He did say that Edwin Diaz and Peter Allonzo, he would love to have them back. But we all know David Sterns and his penny pinching that he loves to do during the off season. And it you do wonder is the price range for these players and Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonzo going to be a problem when they’re trying to retain them? And when it comes to Edwin Diaz, there was a report that came out from Will Salmon and multiple other reporters that Diaz is seeking a similar deal that what he signed back a few years ago with the New York Mets around a fiveyear deal, 100 plus million dollars. And if you do the math, that can be anywhere between 20 to 2122 million dollars. And are the Mets willing to do that? Are is David Sterns willing to do that? That is something that is very much up in the air and very much a question mark because we really don’t need know what the plan is from David Sterns. And I’m not saying that he should be, you know, saying it publicly, but when fans, reporters, and everybody else don’t really know what Davis Stern is going to do, it becomes a real problem because we don’t know what direction he’s going to go. Is it going to change his philosophy a little bit and spend a little bit more on pitching? The Mets have been linked to multiple pitchers on the trade market. They’ve been linked to multiple guys in the free agent market, but as we all know, if you’re 30 and older, David Sers doesn’t like to give big contracts to those type of topline starters when they reach the age of 30 or above. And most of the guys in a free agent market at the top level in the starter pitching department are high level. But when it comes to Edwin Diaz, when he’s been one of, if not the best closer in baseball, he’s worked every penny. And you can’t talk about run prevention if you’re David Sterns because that is his best known words that he uses a lot especially after the season ended. Run prevention. Does it Edwin Diaz in the ninth inning prevent many runs? Gives us many saves. That is why he needs to be priority number one. Yes, it might take five years, maybe six, but five years seems like the max most likely. And we do know that the Dodgers are gonna not really focus on position players in the free agent trade market, but they’re very much going to be focused on the reliever market, the high-end reliever market. And when you hear that the Dodgers are involved basically only in the high leverage, high-end reliever market, you get concerned because the Dodgers has been a masterclass in getting everybody they want when it comes to deferrals in a contract, paying guys exactly what they want. Even if there is deferrals, they find they found the master plan to get in all these guys. Even when you think they can’t add more guys, more stars to their team, they find a way to do it and they find a way to limit the luxury tax, the the payroll, everything because of deferred money. Now, it obviously takes a player to accept those deferrals, but it seems like every time the Dodgers connect with a player, every one of those players defer money. And why would Evan Diaz be any different? And if the Mets are smart, and you just assume with Boy Genius in David Sterns and with Gary, with Steve Cohen, his smart money mind that he can use a deferral system that is obviously legal for guys like Edwin Diaz. If he, you know, I truly believe you got to match whatever the Dodgers are matching. I don’t think Edwin Diaz is just going to go to the Dodgers to go to the Dodgers. If the Mets have a similar, if not the same offer, he’ll come back. I really believe he’ll come back to the Mets because he knows what it is to be a New York Met. And yes, the Dodgers have won backto-back championships going for a three beat. But is Edwin Diaz going to go to another team that he’s not comfortable with? That he’s not does he doesn’t know about the Dodgers? Maybe. But if you’re David Sterns in the New York Mets, what is more important? We always talk about retaining guys, right? Everybody wants to retain Peter Lonzo for for emotional reasons, for winning reasons. Edwin Diaz is a part of that winning mantra, winning area, winning possibilities. He is that guy. I can truly say, and I truly believe this, that Edwin Diaz is probably more important for the Mets winning than a lot of the free agents, a lot of possible guys on this team already, probably more important than Pete Alonzo or Juan Stoodto or Francisco Lindor. I truly believe that because there’s too many times where the Mets needed to have leads going into the ninth inning and they could never do it. either is that their pitching wasn’t good enough to get to the ninth inning or the hitting just fell apart and it wasn’t good enough. They couldn’t score enough runs and they ultimately never were able to get to Diaz enough. But I all think I think that’s all going to change this off season. I think that David Sterns is going to change his philosophy enough knowing that you can’t have five or six reclamation projects in a rotation and a bullpen and think it’s all gonna work out because you need everything to work out and everything has to align perfectly for those reclamation projects to work out. You know, when you’re going into a quote unquote transition year, you can sign Mania and Severino as reclamation projects. Why? because you’re not expected to win. You can’t do that when you’re expected with high expectations of be of being champions of being one of the few teams to win a championship and have so many reclamation projects. There’s got to be less question marks going into the 2026 season than there is more question marks. That is what Sterns has to avoid going into this season. this off season, he needs to eliminate more question marks than having those question marks going into the 2026 season. Obviously, Diaz would remove one of those question marks at the back end of your rotation. Sterns has a lot of work to do, but Edwin Diaz will solve one of your question marks, and it’s one of the easiest question marks to deal with. All you got to do is give him what he wants. There’s no reason why you can’t give him five years $105 million. Why not? Unless his arm falls off tomorrow, you’re probably going to get one of the top closes of baseball for at least two to three more years. And when you get to the fourth to fifth year, you worry about it in 2029 or 30. That is what you worry about. But right now, you need him more than most other players you probably need right now. This is what Edwin Diaz is so important to this New York Mets team. A lot of people can say, “Well, we can get Robert Suarez for probably a little bit less.” But here’s two things we don’t know. Number one, does he want to come to New York? Number two, can he pitch in New York? What are the two things we know about Evan Diaz? He knows this team. He’s comfortable here. He’s pitched in New York and he’s pitched well in New York. Two things that you don’t know about outside sources, outside players that never pitched here. At least with Edwin Diaz, you’ve seen it firsthand what he can do on the big in the big market with the big fans with the New York spotlight on him. So, is Edwin Diaz priority number one? Absolutely. They need to get this done as quickly as possible. We all know and I think we all feel that the Mets and the Dodgers are going to be the favorites for Edwin Diaz. This needs to happen quickly. You got to get Diaz out of the way. This can’t linger on through the offseason. Now, you can’t force Edwin Diaz to sign a deal, but I think Edwin Diaz has a clear understanding of who is willing to pay that type of years and money on the free agent market, and that’s probably the Dodgers and Mets. Shouldn’t take too long to figure this out. I would be shocked if Edwin Diaz is not signed by the end of this month. I don’t think it’s going to take until the winter meetings. I think the Mets can’t afford to do that. You can’t wait too long. They got to be aggressive here. You can’t wait for the market to develop that David Sterns loves to do. That’s a dangerous game to play because there’s other teams that are going to be aggressive. David Sterns needs to be aggressive. That’s one of the philosophy shifts he needs to change. Can’t wait the market to develop and you can’t go, you know, buy low and have a high ceiling. It’s two things you just can’t do, especially when you got to put a team together that is going to have high expectations. Once again, let me know in the comments, guys, what you think of the possible contract Diaz might want and Will Salmon and multiple other reporters saying he wants about five years, 100 plus million dollars, which is similar to what he got with the New York Mets when they resigned them a couple of years ago. I think you have to bite the bullet here and do it. And I think that money is going to be well worth it. But what do you guys think? Do you think David Sterns is going to do it? And would you do it as Met fans? Five years 100 plus million dollars for Edwin Diaz. Let me know in the comments guys what you think. I want to thank you guys for watching and as always Met fans, let’s go Mets.

David Stearns cannot screw this up. Diaz isn't asking for the freakin Moon. He cannot end up in L.A. or with the Yankees. He needs to be a Met. Sign him.
I dont see a problem here. Diaz is worth it. Spreadsheet Stearns cant screw this up
Pay Edwin. The Mets need him to close the door for the next couple of years. Will it end up being an overpay through the length of the contract? I DON’T CARE. We are talking about change that Cohen digs out the couch cushions. I don’t care how much the multi-billionaire spends to build a winning team. I’m always shaking my head when fans start to fret over cost.
Diaz asking price is too much for dumpster diving Stearns
Absolutely. This is crucial! Lock him down now.
I’m OK with a new team. If someone goes, someone else will replace them. I believe we need a change regardless of the player or players. Give the guy a chance. He may surprise you in the long run. It hasn’t panned out yet, but give it some time.
