Mets’ Jeff McNeil had procedure for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome earlier this offseason

  1. This explains the shoulder problems we were hearing about, and partly explains his September slump (he apparently had pain swinging the bat) after he was hovering around an .800 OPS for most of the season. Hopefully he recovers well, the article says he’ll be ready for spring training.

  2. I wonder how much all those added golf swings led to this… I’m no physiologist but I imagine that going from swinging a golf club to a baseball bat is bad for the shoulder with the different mechanics involved. What’s the timeline on this like for a position player?

  3. Poor Jeff, he had that wild tear where be was OPSing close to .900 and hitting everything super hard. This explains his late slump and, unfortunately, makes trading him harder.

  4. I’m assuming this injury/procedure affects a position player different than a pitcher? We know this injury is career threatening for a pitcher.

  5. This is like the *worst* procedure a pitcher can have. Success rates after this seem pretty low.

I imagine it’ll have less of an impact on a position player. Hopefully he comes back 100%
